    I’m old enough to be your Nona and you are teaching me so much!!!
    I just retired and got a pontoon boat and need to learn everything. I’ve never had a boat, never came from a family of boaters but it’s something that I’ve always wanted. Thanks so much for helping me. I want to be able to take the boat on my own without waiting for one of my kids. I appreciate so much this channel!!!!

    good luck getting your silver plaque! I love how confident you sound, I get that as younger persons and not being men, tons of real life boaters probably think you are on your daddy's boat and no clue. Thats sucks, but here on the internet we are looking for helpful content. My only helpful advice as someone who is constantly the "new guy" to the boating community is say things like "this is how we do it " because someone where else it might be done exactly the opposite. Thank you for the videos.

    • @Icutmetal
      @Icutmetal 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct; but then you’ve got up account for your keel or drive offset, which is very critical. In my opinion, that should be where the depth offset should be set to.

    Great video on the basics many overlook. Another observation is that anchors should never be thrown. I'd say 99.9% of boaters throw anchors. They should be lowered into the water, not thrown. For several reasons not limited to: avoiding injury with a heavy and awkward object onboard a slippery boat, avoiding tangling the anchor and rode which will never set, avoiding incorrect anchor orientation on the sea floor when deployed. IMO and what is taught in licensed captain's school (oupv, 6 pack, 50t+) is to lower while slowly backing down to set. Best wishes to Gale Force Twins from the Caribbean!

      I was always considered the wild child, the party kid, the kid parents don’t want their kids to be around unsupervised, but ever since I was 17 my parents trusted me out of my two goodie two shoes brothers to take the family boat out with my friends by myself due to my skills towing and operating the boat. And it made my older brothers and their friends so mad and jealous.

    In Germany we learn during the boat driving license to use a Drag Anchor to make sure, that the back side of the boat dont come up at bigger waves. Thats why we dont have so much wracks at the coast line.

    The prudent mariner needs to keep an eye on folks like "that guy" who just drives in and drops the hook. Have seen several who thought they were all set and everybody jumps off the boat and heads to the beach. Twenty minutes later that boat is either dragging its anchor or has slipped the anchor and is now creating a hazard to other properly anchored boats. Or even if the hook does grab, they miscalculated the amount of rode paid out and are now right on top of another boat. Anchoring in a crowd is always an experience.

    If you will allow a former navy radioman and current radio amateur give you some advice: Always keep your VHF antenna vertical (unless you have to lower it to go under a bridge or something like that). VHF stations use vertical polarization; if you are using horizontal polarization, you will have a hard time communicating with other stations. More importantly, the radiation pattern from that type of antenna is sort of like a doughnut with the antenna poking through the hole. With the antenna horizontal, all the power is going to port and starboard, with virtually none going fore and aft. In other words, you won't be able to communicate with stations ahead of or behind you.
    In any radio system, the single most important part if the antenna. A bad radio with a great antenna will work better than a great radio with a bad antenna. Radio amateurs can talk halfway around the world with just 5 or 10 watts if they have a good antenna, but if you put the legal limit of 1500 watts into a bad antenna, you might not be able to talk across town.

    The OCD in me is wanting to come and put a fresh coat of paint on your engines, argh! 100K is quickly approaching, where's the party? But seriously, congrats, it couldn't happen to a harder working set of twins. Your videos continue to get better and better, love the drone footage. Another fishing channel I watch (Life by the Bow), puts out some incredible drone footage - I'm sure you could do the same with some practice. BTW, many of the boats I see off of Tampa anchored on those keys use the stern anchor as well as the bow, is there an advantage in doing so?
