What I like so much about this reacting person is his musicianship. He talks about the music itself, as well as the skill of the players. It allows the pieces to express themselves, and he is supportive of the works as they are presented, no matter the group.

You are very correct on the timing while playing the main guitar line, but also, originally he played this by plucking the strings with the fretting hand and did not really use the pick hand (just hammer on and pluck pull off much like Van Halen did with his 2 handed fret playing). It is not a hard riff, but hard to keep on timing as you said.
