I'm seeing user failure as much as I'm seeing tackle failure. Most reels (whether new or used; spincast, spinning, or baitcaster) require some setup & correct casting/reeling technique in order to function properly. You can't just mindlessly press a button and expect your lure to cast 40-50 yards. In this case, its readily apparent that the fishing line has been on this reel for a while and has developed a lot of memory (the curls in the line), which is why it isn't casting very far. Aside from new line, it probably needs cleaning & lubrication as well.
You need to add some split shot or something to the line above your bait. The weight of just a plastic grub or whatever the hell you’re using for bait isn’t enough weight to make it cast properly.
I own like 8 different types of Zebco 202 to 888 even the big Boss Hawg. The line bad is not the reel or rod... Is you not putting the right line or keep Old line in it.. is not the combo put new line in it like 8 lbs not bigger you will just have problem 404 Max line size is 10 lbs monofilament line.
the problem is the line on the reel because what it comes with is junk put Berkley Trilene big mono in it and it will do just fine it comes with 15 pound Zebco line that’s why you’re reel is acting like that but it’s not the rod. It’s the line in the reel it comes standard with 15 but I put 10 pound tri-lean in and it’ll cast a country mile
Dread, the problem is YOU !! Firstly you are winding the line on the reel with zero resistance. And secondly, you are using the incorrect weighted lure for that size line, so it cannot pull line out adequately. Refer to my book, “Fishing 101”
watching this reminds me of an 80 year old trying to use a computer, just pushing buttons, not knowing why nothing is working, maybe if I spin this dial! what if I push this button? why isn't it doing what I want? this was painful to watch. I feel kind of bad for you.

I think it's a user malfunction
@@seawilcar i have a 404 and it req 75 ounces just for luwer weight he is using 23 ounce with not swiver nor bobber he is obv dumb

Have one now, tested its casting in my backyard and it works great! Slow it down a bit, it ain’t a bait caster.
My 404 caught a 15 lbs catfish

My 404 works fine. Maybe you have a factory reject.

Take that line out of the reel and re-spool it with 10lb mono

Line was tangled , threw the rod away and got a bait caster
Probably need to be grease and re-Spode with new line.
