i enjoyed that..thanx..i just received tying lessons as a gift and though a bit overwhelmed at the moment, i cant wait to get more into it. p.s. great response to the daransidoo guy,...haha. peace
Flies for fly fishing are generally much lighter than those cast on a spinning or casting rig. Where a spinning rig you would cast a 1/4 oz. lure, a fly will often weigh less than 1/132 oz making it very difficult to cast on anything other than a fly rod. When fly fishing, it is the line that is the 'weight' and it carries the fly with it. That was the long answer. The short answer is that you generally need a fly rod with fly line to cast these types of flies. There are exceptions however.
The original comment about the magnifiers was removed by the original author and my response was warning him about his future. I wear 1.5 mags these days and will probably be moving up in the not to distant future. It doesn't matter what size I'm tying anymore, I need the mags.
I would love to know where you obtained those magnification lenses that you add to your bridge on your glasses? The fly is great looking, and I am one of those spinning rod bass fishermen (until this year) when I learned how to tie and fish flies. Great hobby in the dead of winter in Maine tying flies while the rest of Maine is Ice fishing (brrrr) Then in the spring I have all the flies I could possibly need for all the types of fish I like to fish. Thanks Sean
@FishinFool513 - I bought my son an outfit (rod, reel, line) from BassPro a few years ago on sale for under a $100. You might check at Gander Mtn. if you have one - I've seen some good prices on basic outfits there. You might check with your local fly club if you have one - they can turn you on to some less expensive rigs and provide you the training on how to use it. Nothing like hands on teaching - and it's free as well.
@FlyFishVideo yeah i was thinking the same as him, i got a cheapo rod at gander mtn, for like $60 rod, reel, and line, its a 4 peice rod and seems a lil stiff, but other wise its great...
@FishinFool513 Hi i would check your local wallmart. I started out on a shakespear that i bought at wallmart for twenty dollars and it worked just fine for me. Its good to know wrether your gonna stick with it before you go out and buy your more expensive rods. Hope that helps.
great bug for michigan smallmouths. i tie it in black with purple cactice chenille. pigs can't get enough of it! PS. don't be scared of using a twister tail instead of rabbit strip in the hind end if it your purity will agree
D- you will find one day when you reach a certain age, that you too will be wearing some funny looking glasses just to see where your thread is going on the hook. And you're not that far away either. Enjoy your laugh for some day in the not to distant future, the laugh will be on you. Buddy Price - FFV
This video is great. You have the gift of teaching and I admire that.

@MrSnackization A great technique for the ultralight spin fishermen using weighted flies.
@FlyFishVideo Ok thanks, for the feed back just starting to do the whole fly fishing stuff/tieing.
I will have to check with Terry, but I think it's a Mustad 3366 or equivalent - ffv
I know that this is from 7 months ago, but Bass Pro has a $20 5wt. rod.

I caught a big bass on a similar fly but a marabou tail and a marabou wing
I found another website, and they were using TMC 8089
@FishinFool513 I don't own a fly fishing rod. But on one of ny spinning reels I have 4 pound test and use the float and fly technique.
I'm 22 and I'm considering a pair...lol!
also are you using a Renzetti Traveler's vice?
when would you fish this fly?
