First log of Honey Locust I've ever put on the sawmill. I'm surprised by what's inside this log

  • First ever Honey Locust log I have put on the Woodland Mills HM130 Max sawmill. This is a heavy dense wood and I'm hoping the grain is beautiful as well.

Epoxy is your friend. Use the crotch pieces for slabs and fill the damaged areas with black epoxy. The contrast against the lighter colored wood will look really good.

I've seen some projects like that. Maybe someone who does that will want to purchase some of these slabs in the future.

Yup, nice looking wood for sure. I'm curious, do you already have an intended purpose for the dimensional stuff that you milled up in this video? The whole thought of people milling hardwood dimensional lumber is all new to me, and I'm not quite sure what people are using it for. I sure hope they're not using it for framing, because that would be an awful waste of hardwood (in my opinion), but you're obviously not using "one by" material for framing either. Good video Tim!

I don't have an actual purpose yet when I mill up a log. I try to get the most I can from each log that "makes sense" at the time. This one inch stuff could be used for all kinds of furniture projects. Could be glued together to make a table top for example. I have used some hardwood for 4x4 and other larger dimensions for building project as well. I used hard wood in my bucking table and splitter staging table for example. It's heavy and strong enough for those types of applications.

locust tree for having inclusions in its crotches like that all the time.

Most trees have that in the crotches. I was just bummed with the ant damage in this one. Could have been some nice pieces.
