  • Hogue Deka Magnacut edge retention testing. Is this going to be all that everyone expected it to be? I tested this one on the factory, first, third and fourth edge as well as an average hardness to go along with the cutting data. I'll talk about how it sharpened as well as how I think this fits in as a production steel.

    Hogue started running the Dekas at 63-64 for recent Magnacut batches. Would be cool to see a comparison; appears to be a marked improvement. Did you ever get your hands on the Magnacut RSK sprint run? Would love to see how that fares. I have one, but haven't put it through the ringer. Protech's MC is supposed to be impressive.

    I was just watching some of your older vids and wondering where you've been. Glad you're back, looking forward to seeing some new results. Magnacut is looking pretty good for production. Hopefully other companies will start transitioning from 20cv and move on to this. I've heard some companies are running it around 61, hoping it's just a few examples from a first run or ironing out the ht. It would be really nice to see it coming in at 63-64

      I'm going to cover what's been going on the past few months and where I've been. From the examples I've had so far Magnacut is a better choice than 20CV that's the current rage.

      Super steels are really too soft because of a weird belief that they are weaker. I know s35, s45, and Magnacut are almost always made a few HRC too soft and are actually made weaker.

      Larrin the inventor/investor says that staying with 61.5 is the least risky. To go harder means a much greater chance of having austenite and not martensite.

      @jmarsh667 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If I remember correctly Larrin said that's only an issue when shooting for 64 or 65 and if you do cryo it should not be an issue which most companies do cryo now

    I think you really nailed Magnacut on the head. A solid and SAFE choice for stainless steel that performs well. Love the consistent performance we've been seeing from the factory models. I wonder if that has more to do with the actual steel design or Larrin's up front work for recommending heat treats.

    Glad to see you back. I ordered the polymer deka Wharncliffe magnacut in silver blade. My grind came jacked up on the same side but way worse. The grind actually curved down and back up. I think the person grinding the blade sneezed or dozed off for a second . I was going to send it back but since I sharpen a lot I decided to fix it myself because I got so angry. It's a downer getting in a new knife just to see it messed up. It took me awhile to straighten everything out since I hand sharpen but I got it there. I don't know if you left a toothy edge or high polish edge. It seems mine does better with a toothy edge. It cuts paper better with a polished edge but needs bite to cut other things. How did you leave yours? The deka in polymer is light and it sounds great flipping it open. I don't really like the way the blade is done on the Wharncliffe. I'll buy the drop point next or I hope they do something different with the blade shape/grind since I like sheepsfoot and Wharncliffe blades. I can't say I like the polymer scales. I asked hogue if I could buy some g10 and they said they don't sell scales separately. Oh well. I'll wait for customs. They should have checkered the polymer scales or done something to give more grip. Thanks for the video.😊

    Great video Gerald I think it should definitely replace the soft 20cv, 204P, M390 that’s so prevalent on the market, I like to look at it as a S45vn incremental improvement. Being as the edge retention, toughness, and corrosion resistance are all better and for the everyday user even those who abuse their knives it will be a stainless that can take the beating where the S30v family would fail and still be able to keep up in terms of edge retention and it’s very difficult to rust. Overall Leads to a great balanced everyday carry steel, much like what they had in mind when creating the S30v family of steels.

  • @ahill209
    @ahill209 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    MagnaCut excels at corrosion resistance and has very good toughness, but edge retention is really just middle of the road. Dr. Larrin Thomas, the inventor of magnaCut, publishes a table where he rates toughness, edge retention, and corrosion resistance. MagnaCut was 7, 5, and 9.5 respectively. Compare that to 4, 6, and 7.5 for S30V and 3.5, 9, and 7.5 for S90V. Dr. Thomas also will cite that edge geometry has more to do with performance than any other factor. MagnaCut is a great steel for what it does, but those who select it should understand it's pros and cons.

    Very curious on how the higher end production companies are doing with there magnacut compared to what you have done already. I have 3 knives in magnacut, sebenza, Mac 2 3.5, and a knife from DCC. There is a difference in my use from DCC knife in magnacut compared to the other 2. The DCC knife sharpens slightly easier and to me in random use last 30 to 40% longer.

    • @kraftzion
      @kraftzion ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think I read from Larrin Thomas that magnacut sharpens easier at 63+. The dcc knife is probably harder.

  • @tacticalcenter8658
    @tacticalcenter8658 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Hogue fixed their magnacut with the current release's only recently. Apparently they found out they screwed up. Apparently you can warranty claim and get new batch in 63-64rc. Don't quote me on that. But someone in the comments told me something like that.
    At least if any brand do magnacut at 62rc it does better than how bad the majority of brands do on m390. And they won't ship magnacut to china anymore. So already a better buy than china m390 other than Reate.
    Did any Chinese brands improve m390? Have you tested any newer twosun m390 yet? I think two brand's worked with kknives of Switzerland to improve heat treat of m390 one of which was kunwu I forget the other. Maybe it was kubey?
    I remember that Case knives magnacut was like 59-60rc when people were testing them. Thats got to be crappy.

    I ll bet this works great touched up with a ceramic rod that adds some toothiness . I ce found the strop shines em up and gets a glassy edge but I m probably over stropping , lol . The ceramic rod , for me , makes a nice even grippy edge even if it’s a micro bevel on the edge the performance I get using them on job sites is noticeable with a sticky edge . The over stropped I think edges are slippery but slicey a f for food and cardboard . Is this why people say what knife to grab for certain things ? I totally understand now after using so many different styled blade designs . They’re slicing knives then there’s work knives
