Michael, after setting the tiles and giving it a good cleaning, treat the raw terra cotta with grout release. Otherwise the grout will stick into the surface and “stain” it. That may not be a problem to you. It may just make it look aged. Give it a test on the section under the Aga or cabinets. Getting grout off the surface can be hell. This is good advice. I’m a ceramic artist and I also do mosaics. The tiles that have a slight sheen to them may be more easily cleaned of the grout than the more raw ones. Another way of dealing with cutting the slots you need to fit the beams into is to drill lots of holes to the depth you need to achieve and then use the chisel to remove all the wood. Keep the drill as close to the edge of the notch as possible and create as many holes as possible to create the size of the slot that you need. This means that the drill does most of the wood removal and then the chisel is only needed to remove small amount of wood left.
Even if you don't manage to do it by Christmas, you can still create beautiful Christmas content at the Chateau and then work on getting the kitchen ready for Easter! It's hard when this happens and you might feel that you have not achieved your aims, but often you need to re-adjust your plans and work with what you have.
This is what happens with DIY projects, you always find other things that need fixing with extra costs. The bright side is, it will be a sound and safe structure to live in 😀 I for one cannot wait to see the end result.
What neat good work!!! Dad is good with the camera ... Breakfast looks very good, and the sweet dog was hungry too!!! Wow the beams look great. I hope you all are wearing ear protection when the chain saw is in use ... The tiles looks great. This is going to be a beautiful floor. Won't be clean for long. lol
I’m so glad the viewer pointed out the A Frame. You’re the type to make sure it’s all done up right so it will last another few hundred years. It’s okay if it’s not done for Christmas; the progress is already stunning and it will only continue, bit by bit, as you can afford! You and all your sponsors should be proud of the work so far. Hopefully by this time next year you’ll be planning holiday decorations and for the whole cottage and filming cooking videos. Baby steps! (And if you want to feel a little better, read about the planning fallacy; no matter what you plan, it never goes according to plan! You’re not alone; we all have to face the planning fallacy!) I can’t give to the cottage fund right now but I watch nearly all the ads and like every video in hopes it helps with the channel revenue! I loved seeing the floor tiles going down. I tiled my bathroom floor and shower, and I’d do it again! My least favorite part was having to mix more thinset or grout when we ran out, and cleaning the buckets. The actual laying I got pretty good at. I took a lot of ceramics at university and always wanted to make a run of tiles (my professor made his own tiles for his shower). These old floor tiles are so beautiful in their simplicity, that I hope I get to have a chance to make some next time I get back into ceramics. I would love to do a whole floor.
Hi Michael you have a great team there with your dad and Shawn the floor looks amazing good job someone pointed out about the roof better safe than sorry there is going to be a lot of love put into that cottage by the time it’s finished and lots of vlogs to look at from the start to finish don’t give up as they say onwards and upwards and we all love the journey that this cottage is going on
I can now see why the vlog release was delayed!! Fantastic progress being made and the tiled floor is going to look even more amazing once the whole of the downstairs is complete and there is some traditional furniture on it. Great job Michael and the dream team :-)
Don't worry Michael. I think every one of us this year has faced the unexpected and you're working so hard that the outcome will be beautiful for sure! Also: more problems= more videos! Cheers
Hello Michael, don't fret keep your chin up grasshopper!!! Where the is a will, there is a way and it will all come together before you know it! I will contribute this weekend to your gofundme as part of an early Christmas present to you. I am so excited and proud of you! Everything is looking so nice. The floor looks great! I love watching the entire process and magic of bringing your little cottage to life. After your cottage gets done, then we must work on your greenhouse, lol.....can u imagine how that is going to look? It's going to be lovely with plants & flowers. I wish I could be there to help you. I do plan to visit you in 2 and a half years, when my husband & I celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary in coming to France for the 1st time. I plan to visit Stephanie and another English couple with a Chateau, that I communicate with through TH-cam. In the meantime, I am practicing my French and making a list of other things to see & do, when I come. Remain hopeful, my dear Michael as everything will come together! I am so excited to see the Gardener's Cottage getting the new floor beams and tile work and am so grateful the structural engineer saw the roof is needing attention!! Safety first Michael. Do not despair, all of our help is on the way!! We have been donating to political campaigns here in the States, and now the contested races will take more funds. I look forward to buying you a "cuppa' and contributing for the completion of the Cottage. I am learning so much from your vlogs. Please show and explain every step, such as the cement, and the considtancy, the grout, why you have to chisel out the main beam etc. You may have seen Bob Vila's and the other guys on "This Old House" on USA TV = TH-cam vids. Definately worth checking him out. He is the real deal and has millions of loyal followers. The Aga will be beautiful once it is re-enamaled. We have a 1940's enamal gas Wedgewood stove and oven, that is still in great condition, and although we do not use it any longer, I would not give it up when we moved clear across Country from Pasadena CA to Atlanta GA. So I "get" what the Aga means to you!! It is a thing of beauty and a joy to have and use daily.Keep up the GREAT work! Love to all,Bren
Okay so why is Michael single? He is such a sweet, multi-talented guy. I'm invested in this series first because of his charm and second because of it being a beautiful place.
Such beautiful tile. And, I hope other viewers appreciate how much skill it takes to cut-out a square, clean slot for joists like you showed. Impressive.
Your dad is a god sent I hope you all chip in and help him get his house ready I wished you showed more on his progress and hope he gets a lot of help to give him a rest, good job on your progress, can't wait to see you decorate it.
Hi Michael and team, I am so sorry the kitchen might not be ready for Christmas. I was looking forward to the Christmas dinner. However, I think you and the team are amazing and we will be glad whenever you get it done. Love the floor...good job. Rita
Michael, the suggestion experienced tile people are giving seem sensible. Protect the tile with treatment that will allow you to wipe them off, and lay plywood over it until all the upstairs work is complete lest it be broken by a dropped tool. I'm so glad people are chiming in, though I'm sure your dad knows much of what has been suggested. No rush as this will be restoring the cottage to last for many more years.
I love this series. I just found it recently and binge watched it all. It’s amazing how much you’ve done since you started the restoration of the cottage. The tile floor looks absolutely amazing by the way! Also, Hello from North Carolina ☺️
This is such an amazing episode. I was talking away at the screen asking 'why not use the chainsaw' to cut the recesses in the beam.😁 I'm so pleased you saw the email about the A frame, I'd have hated to think that the cottage integrity would have been compromised and the whole thing could not be lived in after all that work. The tiles are beautiful. 30+ years ago we lifted quarry tiles from our kitchen floor and totally regret in now😳. Fingers crossed and with some good luck and delighted viewers things will be back on track soon.❤
Awe you seemed a little defeated there at the end. I feel certain you will be able to have it ready in time for Christmas. You have already made so much progress. I can't contribute other than watching the ads so I hope it does help(Bc I hate ads lol). Enjoyed, Thanks from Arkansas!
I am also sending support from Arkansas. Do not get discouraged Michael, you are doing so well on this cottage. Even if doesnt get finished by Christmas it isn't the end of the world. It will get done in it's own time, and it will have been worth every penny, and maybe the extra time it takes will just make the end result that much more beautiful. (Sorry this is so long winded, just don't want you to be so stressed out. You're doing so amazing.)
As another viewer from Arkansas, I also watch the commercials all the way through since I learned from Stephanie that it helps! It's looking great and I look forward to watching the process more than seeing a dinner by Christmas.
I think Michael was a little embarrassed to be asking for more money, but 5 euros, dollars, or pounds isn’t going to break the bank if everyone who can afford it can chip in. These videos are free, and if people don’t like watching the adverts, then play it again whilst you’re in the shower. 🤗
This is such a beautiful structure as a cottage. Once you’re done I believe it will last another 500 years. Let’s hope so. LOL Michael Patrick this is your Christmas gift. A solid floor, solid walls, a solid structure in which to live your life. Fantastic!
I love that you share the reality of construction projects. There are always snags and unexpected costs, especially with renovations and restorations. I also love that you are working so hard to maintain the original flavor of the cottage and period, using solid wood beams and reclaimed tiles. The craftsmanship is beautiful.
I wish I could help, Michael, but Corona has me scratching the bottom of the bucket myself. Sitting here crossing my fingers that you raise all the money you need xx
I wish I had the funds to help, but I am doing a mostly homemade Christmas for my family as it is. I do so admire what you are doing and am sincerely impressed with how you are handling your issues. I wish you the greatest Christmas, kitchen or not.
Have the new beam and joists been treated already? To prevent future wood worm for destroying them. Sorry I can't contribute more than I already do. I am a Patron and will continue to be as long as I can but I am currently unemployed and have two young children to feed and care for. Good luck to you Michael 🙂
You are so sweet.. i am sorry that you had to ask yet again for funding. I could see it wasn’t easy. But your heart is in this and it will get done! Much love from Provence Avignon!
Oh Michael, my dear... This is restauration! You don't have to be in the cottage by christmas, you can only aim for it. How many engineers are watching these?
So excited to see all the progress despite all the set backs. But here’s to hoping for Christmas dinner in the Gardner’s cottage.💙 Well done again on an amazing vlog!
Never fear Michael...you will get the help you need. No sense in having a lovely home that the sky falling in could ruin all that hard work. Glad to see your taking it in stride and doing it not only by yourselves but doing it "right!' No matter what, please have something at Christmas....I know that it would make my Christmas better whatever you do. Im so looking forward to seeing what you Pethericks have in store for Thanksgiving and Christmas decorating!
I love to tile. I'd like to try doing a mosaic someday. I have done some unglazed brick veneers in the past and doing the grout was a head ache with trying to get all the grout wiped down on their surface. Right after I had finished them, I read an article that said to seal them first before grouting. Thought I would share that and perhaps save you the frustration that I went through.
Its going to be wonderful family and friends are what matters at Christmas we have been working on our home for 40 years its a evolving place yours is too your kitchen will come in time and we are all here to support you as you are for us

Time Capsule, here I come xxxx Right behind you, Michael.
The cottage is looking awesome, those new joists are going to add so much warmth and character for the next 100 years.
Carving out the beams looks so satisfying 💕
Woww!! What a progress!! It's literally sweat, blood and tears!! It's going to be fantastic, there's no doubt!! Thank you Michael for sharing this wonderful experience with us! 🙌🏼🥰
Literally? I’ve seen no blood or tears.
@@rgrndu do you really believe there hasn't been blood and tears? Construction work = cuts and injuries plus expensive setbacks = tears! Right?
Look how famous the 'Gardeners cottage' is becoming. Your doing such a great job. It's going to be so fantastic. What's the saying....build it and they will come! Think about us all tap tap taping at your window wanting to see it in the flesh oneday :) Just like Beatrix Potter you may have to have open days !! with a fee for viewing :)..... have fun Michael enjoy the process and keep breathing you will get there and it will be amazing.
@@rgrndu blood, sweat, and tears...meaning hard work; enormous effort.
Famously associated to a speech by Winston Churchill when he became PM in 1940.
What would Michael do without the expert help from his dad & Shawn. He truly is blessed to have good people by his side. God bless Papa Petherick & Shawn.
Michael both you and your team are just perfectionists what a team the woodwork wow sorry about just another problem your roof internal but considering everything else that have happened for you it really is minor just imagine when your in and those lovely cooking smells and the comfort of your first lovely home I can't wait for this time to come to you thank God You have your dad and company God bless.xxx
Won't be clean for long. lol
Mick and Sean are the greatest! 🛠🔨🎁🧿❤️
You’re not alone; we all have to face the planning fallacy!)
I can’t give to the cottage fund right now but I watch nearly all the ads and like every video in hopes it helps with the channel revenue!
Hi Michael you have a great team there with your dad and Shawn the floor looks amazing good job someone pointed out about the roof better safe than sorry there is going to be a lot of love put into that cottage by the time it’s finished and lots of vlogs to look at from the start to finish don’t give up as they say onwards and upwards and we all love the journey that this cottage is going on
Wow, the beams and joists and the TILES. Gorgeous. Looking forward to seeing you in your kitchen cooking Christmas dinner. :D
Loved the video. So glad you are sharing with all of us. I have confidence that the kitchen will be well on its way by Christmas . Keep the faith!
Nothing like doing a little DIY (with a professional) to teach you loads of new skills. Best of luck with the cottage...can't wait to see it finished!
Do not worry, all will work out just fine. You deserve everything that is coming you way.
Team Sean and Dad do it again! It’s looking great😀
I can now see why the vlog release was delayed!!
Fantastic progress being made and the tiled floor is going to look even more amazing once the whole of the downstairs is complete and there is some traditional furniture on it.
Great job Michael and the dream team :-)
You guys are doing a marvelous job. I am learning so much watching your hands on videos. You're a great team.
The "cut if off" part was so funny 😆😆😆 Your dad is precious Michael.
Love seeing the cottage restored. Keep up the great work, can't wait to see your vision become a reality. Sending couple of teas your way!
Much love & cheer,♡

PG Tips The floor is amazing love it 😍 All working so hard to get it done . Pops and Shaun such skills !! We need this to all keep our spirits up carry on the good work !!! 👍🙏🏻😘
That floor looks beautiful! I can’t wait to see it all done :)
The roof is the priority ... roof and a good foundation and you are good... Kitchens can wait. But sure is looking nice as it's coming along... still can see outside in a couple of spots. But you'll get there... fun watching.
I’m just amazed at how perfectly the beams are fitting together. Great job!
Impressive.
Been waiting for this all week/weekend!!!
ummmm can i hire Shawn to do a multitude of construction things... he seems like a do it all superman! those beams look fantastic.
I was talking away at the screen asking 'why not use the chainsaw' to cut the recesses in the beam.😁
I'm so pleased you saw the email about the A frame, I'd have hated to think that the cottage integrity would have been compromised and the whole thing could not be lived in after all that work.
I'm supporting from Kansas. we're state neighbors
Fantastic!
The new kitchen floor and the upstairs floor look amazing, well done to all of you xx
Hi Michael, the beam & joists look fantastic and the tiled floor looks amazing well done to you guys xx
Michael has achieved his new gofundme goal. 😁😁😁
@@Jayrose59 awesome!!!
Thank you Mark, the Structural Engineer, you are looking after our Michael!
You are doing an amazing job, I know whenever it’s done, it’ll be perfect....we are all looking forward to following you on your journey!👍
Omg that lunch looked amazing!! Remind me of a ghibli scene!
The beams look great. And the tiles on the floor look fantastic
Absolutely adorable Jack Russell terrier-- such a faithful helper!❤️
Oh Michael, my dear... This is restauration! You don't have to be in the cottage by christmas, you can only aim for it.
How many engineers are watching these?
So exciting to see the progress!! That's renovations Michael especially of old buildings. Congratulations on your 200,000, you deserve it..! xo
I've been anxiously awaiting more cottage update. Multifaceted family skills.
I just LOVE the vibe of these vlogs. So calm. Just what we all need
So excited to see all the progress despite all the set backs. But here’s to hoping for Christmas dinner in the Gardner’s cottage.💙
Well done again on an amazing vlog!
Do they celebrate Thanksgiving??
I love to tile. I'd like to try doing a mosaic someday. I have done some unglazed brick veneers in the past and doing the grout was a head ache with trying to get all the grout wiped down on their surface. Right after I had finished them, I read an article that said to seal them first before grouting. Thought I would share that and perhaps save you the frustration that I went through.
Always thought your gofundme target was waaay too small Michael! Just chipped in a few cups of tea for you (smoky earl grey obvs) keep it up fella! 👍
Its going to be wonderful family and friends are what matters at Christmas we have been working on our home for 40 years its a evolving place yours is too your kitchen will come in time and we are all here to support you as you are for us
♥️♥️♥️ the tiles look fab. Great work team 🕊💕
