He's actually talking to himself. The older Nathan is at this time realizing that if he doesn't get things together he's going to have these issues all his life. At the end of the video you partially see the tattoo which is on his arm that says REAL that is on Nate arm right now the woman that walk up behind him is whom I suspect to be his wife and calls out to him NATHAN.
Sometimes people ask what would you say to a younger you? And I always thought that I would say how sorry I am. When I saw this music video I felt like NF understood.
This song came out when I had just moved out of my mother's house when I was starting my senior year in high school. I moved in with my older brother and stopped talking to her until I got home from army basic and AIT a couple years later. This song and a couple others were on repeat for me a lot of those 2 years
I always though the song and lyrics r directed towards his dad but the video is about him. It’s two different meanings in this song. The lyrics r directed towards his dad but the video is him talking to his younger self apologizing for not getting help sooner and saving himself from the pain and trauma he went through as a kid because he didn’t get help sooner
I agree with you guys and the comments. It’s ambiguous where he’s talking abt parents and talking abt his older self. One tidbit is that there’s a line in here that says “don’t even like going to your house” which hits different when you realize it could be about his past self.
NF being the old man, as revealed in the final seconds of the video is showing that this song is a lot about NF's old self (ie. younger NF). Elderly NF is allowing his old self to die. Dying to one's old self is a core tenet of growth in Christianity. Elderly NF is a father to his old younger self that still resides in his mind (or flesh), it follows him around, it trys to work itself back in. In a way we all are the parent over our past self, our past habits and thoughts all started with us, and can stay with us. Nathan HAS to take up his cross daily, to put to death his OLD self in order to continue to become his NEW self (as Christians we all do). NF is not proud of his past-he has to "let" his old self/flesh "down" into its grave. Colossians 3:5-11: "Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator."
Oh boy I hope The Search is next!! So far I'm really loving the tracks you've chosen for this journey. Would've been great if you'd started with Intro but I feel like it was probably the better choice going with Mansion to get the Pastor on board though. Intro II however man, definitely should've had that one on there BUT it'll be a great one for him to go back and listen to. I know Intro, II, III, and The Search are all just openers with no chorus but definitely some of my most favorite NF songs. Sure can't wait until Hope comes!! Keep up the great work and the Lord's work guys.
We have a few more reactions from this album that we’ve recorded and are in the process of editing. “The Search” is next on our list of reactions to record though😁
He's talking about his parents. Going back and forth from his side and his parents side. The older guy is him, of course. But, I think he's reflecting on his younger self and the struggle he had.
Aaww, you guys should check on ticket availability for the Pastor. NF's Hope tour tickets started selling out fast, but maybe you all can still track one down. I tried to get floor seats for the Dallas & Orlando shows, but they were all sold! On my 3rd try I found some, & purchased two floor seat tickets for his show near Atlanta @ the end of July... 🤔🙂
this song is always hard for me because a day that will haunt me for the rest of my life. May 5th 2012 at Bonham State Park I let my brother down, I tried to save him but couldn't he died because of me.
He is talking to himself not a parent. It is the idea that he let himself down over the years and it is hard to forgive himself. If you actually apply the lyrics to his own self it is much more profound. This is is most popular commercially but it doesn't even make the top 20 in my book.
The video and the lyrics don't really go hand in hand. The video is him, the old man and him in water, car, and grave. He's watching himself struggle and let himself down and can't help himself get out of it.
i agree with the jim gaffigan comment although loosely, but i get it. think its meant to say you are a real no nonsense person, but not in an overbearing way. just a real ass dude, with good observations but not judgey

Everytime I hear this song I get emotional tears comes to my eyes this is truly one of his best RELATABLE songs

If the song does not have a feature, the voice is Nate pitched up or down.

Jim gaffigan is one of the cleanest comics out there😂

It’s his voice
This was his only radio hit, so it makes sense that it got a ton more Spotify hits.
That’s him in the water and him as and older man letting himself down

Reflection
That is his voice at the beginning.

@codyspradling4821 my heart aches for you - sending hugs and support
the song is both, had a double meaning both talking about himself and his father
It's NF talking about how he let himself down
He is talking to himself not a parent. It is the idea that he let himself down over the years and it is hard to forgive himself. If you actually apply the lyrics to his own self it is much more profound. This is is most popular commercially but it doesn't even make the top 20 in my book.
the song is definitely about his mom.
The video and the lyrics don't really go hand in hand. The video is him, the old man and him in water, car, and grave. He's watching himself struggle and let himself down and can't help himself get out of it.
NF's name is 'Nathan'. It's the older version of NF looking back.
Have you heard of Tool? You should definately listen to the Lateralus album.
i agree with the jim gaffigan comment although loosely, but i get it. think its meant to say you are a real no nonsense person, but not in an overbearing way. just a real ass dude, with good observations but not judgey
This one seems easy... Its definitely his older self telling his younger self he was sorry. He raised himself.
He’s sorry that he let his younger self down.
