    #1 Problem: Broken Antennas
    A broken antenna can be intermittent. When you shake, rattle or bang the remote a cracked antenna wire may gain or lose contact. Simply pressing buttons hard enough can wiggle the remote enough so that sometimes a signal gets through. This can APPEAR like button issues.
    Button problems will almost always effect only the heavily used buttons. If all of your buttons stop working well (even buttons you rarely or never use) then it's not button failure. The only rare exception is in remotes with silver ink snap domes instead of rubber conductive buttons such as RC18T and RC38T. In those remotes it is possible for the silver to rub off with heavy use and stick to a button causing a short circuit. In THAT case a failed button can prevent all other buttons from working.
    Battery Corrosion can make a mess. If you know there is battery corrosion it needs to be cleaned and not ignored. You will have to open the remote and clean it with q-tips and isopropyl alcohol or IT WILL eventually break your remote. It might take weeks, months or even years but it will never stop unless you clean it.
    Use an AM radio
    You can use an AM radio to "hear" button presses on your remote. If the remote has power, buttons work and the antenna is not broken then the signal the remote puts up can be heard over AM. It can be tricky to tune it right. The position and angle of the remote is critical. The range is very short (an inch or two). This will help you determine if the remote is working. If you can't hear it on the AM radio then there is something wrong with the remote. If you can hear it then there is something wrong on the main radio side.

    I followed Ben's video guide and purchased one of his Bose RC-9 button repair kits. The repair was easy to do and worked perfectly. I highly recommend you do the same if your having button problems with a Bose remote.

    Thank you!! I got my remote working after MONTHS of trying. NO SOLDERING! I'm not sure what exactly worked. it could have been the cleaning. It may have been wiping off corrosion (which it didn't really look like there was any). Wiped the board down really well after you spoke about the silver dust causing a short and keeping the button on. LASTLY, I realized on my last reassembly, that when putting the controller back together, ONE OF THE BATTERY SPRINGS DID NOT GO INTO THE GROOVE OF THE REMOTE. WHEN I PUT THE REMOTE TOGETHER, ONE SPRING SLID DOWN ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE PLASTIC, WHICH WAS KEEPING THE BATTERY FROM MAKING CONTACT. Once I put it back together with all battery springs showing and making battery connection, it WORKS!!! Thank you!

    Thanks for the great video. I bought a Bose set on Marketplace for cheap because the remote was dodgy. Your video helped me to narrow the problem down to the aerial which the solder had come loose - easy fix. When testing it out I also noticed a setting on my Apple TV by which I couls control the volume from the Apple TV remote so double win.

    Great video. Do you have instruction for fixing Bose RC48S2 remote? That's the remote with the LCD screen. My remote will not power on. I don't see any corrosion on the leads.

    Love this! For my remote the Sound button is suddenly flipped. E.g. up button reduces volume and down increases it... do you have an idea what could be wrong 😂

      That doesn't even seem possible. I would check for corrosion on button contacts and IC chips. maybe corrosion is confusing the processor

    Good video letting people see inside their remote controls which are the same, I noticed the trouble you were having soldering the thick solid earth copper onto the board, the problem with this is it's a heavy piece soldered onto a small PCB pad, it might break that pad off in time, you were having lots of difficulty soldering the antenna because you didn't pre tin the whole piece of copper you were going to solder, it broke off because you didn't apply enough heat into that piece of copper, maybe a small "helping hands" clip would help you, it can hold the wire for you, while you apply lots of heat and tin the wire, soldering the antenna to the copper then would've then been easy.

    HI Great video! I had a question regarding the Crystal in a remote like the one you have all the way to the left in your video. The crystal broke free and the pins are completely gone for the most part(broke flush at the base of the crystal) so I was looking online to find/order a replacement but they seem to be pretty hard to come by at the 27.145 mhz frequency, unless going to a rip off artist trying to charge $50 for the part plus $20 shipping for what I believe is a $1 part. Would you know a good place to get them (I'm in the US) or would you know if the crystals that are much easier to find but only at 27mhz flat frequency would work? Any help would greatly be appreciated.

      I found them on eBay from China a few years back. You would need the 27.145

    Another possible fix was: THE up and down pins on the back of the remote which sync your remote to your system; they all "LOOKED LIKE" they were down, but one of them was barely up from the fully down position. Maybe this was keeping remote from transmitting.

    My remote only works close to the receiver, any ideas why that is? Antenna is intact, batteries are good, and all the buttons work close up. Once I get more than 5 feet away it doesn’t communicate with the Bose lifestyle receiver

    • @p1repair
      @p1repair  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you absolutely positive the antenna is not broken? The wire can break inside the white glue holding some of these in. Almost certainly a bad antenna unless you have removed the glue and verified it's good.

    • @akmojo9547
      @akmojo9547 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did verify that the wires are intact, I repaired it many years ago when the wire on one side of the antenna was broken. I might of shortened one loop of the antenna wire to resolder it down (didn’t know not to do that) but it doesn’t look like it.

    After I pushed any button the music starts again, is the remote broken?

    • @p1repair
      @p1repair  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like something is wrong. Some Bose remotes have silver paint snap domes. That can wear off and stick to the circuit board causing short circuits. It could be battery corrosion or water damage also.
