Billy Doaks, was one of the very few teachers outside of Aikido that I got to train with. I grew up in Hereford and by the time I I met Billy had studied Aikido for about 5-6 years. He did a demonstration at a Budo event host by Gwynn Jones Shihan, (can’t remember where), I found his techniques remarkably precise and consistent, it was jaw dropping seeing his demonstration, not least his Uke being able to take it. Off the mat, an incredibly generous man with his time if you had questions. I’m very sad to hear he has passed away. Condolences to his friends, students and family.

I know this is just training! The techniques are very refined. This teacher is excellent! As far as street effectiveness all of these techniques can be applied by implementing Atemi such as a punch to the throat, neck or other vital area, before executing a throw. Train hard with some sparing a few times a week and the combat effectiveness will become evident.
Gary Williamson Doak Sensei is clearly applying atemi in his defense. It doesn’t present itself in the live action sequences all the time but it is clear in the slow motion replay. Atemi does not have to be a deliberate strike to be effective...it can be as simple as feinting a strike to the nose, ribs or groin to take away Uke’s mind to what Nage is about to do.
What a flow and relaxation! This is exactly the essence of JuJutsu... You find the Ju(Softness) in his movements. The great combinations of Atemi, Nage and Kansetsu waza techniques. Samurai were using these techniques for war purposes. So one can find such great combinations. Ossu!
Loved my time traing under Billy's tuition back in nearly 1987 for almost 3 years or so in the old church in Llanelli, Wales. Some of the techniques showed by Billy within this video are exceptionally fulfilled. With that being said, anyone who personally knew, and trained under his tutelage will agree, "That was Billy. What else would you expect?" LOL. A GREAT man. A humble man. A man also built like the broad side of a barn in his weightlifting/bodybuiling days too. Another sport Billy turned me onto in my youth. Billy, you had a great effect on this mans life, that I still rely on to this day, Sensai Doak.

I'd just turned 19, turning 20 that year I had just turned 23 before I had no choice but to move on into everyday life that took me onto another course to provide for my wife and family. Side Story: Billy presented me with a plaque he had for 1st Dan recipiants, and I asked him if he'd permit me to create something from it. I was heavily into glass engraving at the time, and I created a picture framed glass engraving of the permit for the next recipient of their 1st Dan. Billy was blown away, he thanked me, and said there was a gentleman who was about to be graded for their 1st Dan, and he said he'd present it to them as an extra memoir for their achievement. As it was a 1 of a kind creation, this presentation would be extra special too. Unfortunately, getting married, and needing to move on into life, I never found out who actually received the plaque that took me almost 2 weeks to complete.

Because Sensei Doak was indeed in the midst of opening a second club in Camarthen when he was already teaching within his first Dojo in Llanelli, in the old church, on the corner of Inkerman Street and Murry Street. (I can't remember the name of the church, but I believe that church has since been burned out during an act of arson by some local teenagers a few years ago?!?) The entrance to the Llanelli Dojo was through the Inkerman Street side gate, That was just before the old sign, '50 Yards To Stop', through the big double doors, where you turned left into the Dojo. prior to turning left into the Dojo, in front of you is where the church used to store spare chairs and tables. 35-45 other students who used to attend can also confirm this to be fact. (I was born in 1967, so my remembrance of the time frame, plus my maths, does in deed make it around 1986-1987). Hope this helps.

The first club in Llanelli was I a small Chapel not far from where inkerman Street was, though it wasn't long before the club moved there! I was at inkerman Street on the first jight that opened! It was first of all upstairs before it moved into the basement!
I think that people who looks to these kind of videos,must understand that they are done to make possible to understand and see how the thecnics must be done. Only in a continuously pratice someone could be able to use it in real combat. They are very dificult to get ready to aply them in the velocity that any real situation demands...But, that is a question of the dedication a student are ready do aply in he's pratice. Doing those kind of movements in a "real velocity", will not allow the students to understand how do use the thecnics. Be safe and don't forget that this is a way without stoppages.
to those who criticise this no resistence,you have resistence its called judo /.ju jitsu competion ,you will see many of these tecniks used ,throws and locks,in mma jiju gatame is a favorite ground lock ,rousey was famous for this move
53 now with messed up arthritic knees wish I would found a teacher like this 30 odd years ago. Found 2, 7th Dan bujutsu Daito ryu masters in Japan (meaning weapons as well) unfortunately both weren’t interested in teaching. One was always drunk the other was only interested in marrying off his mid-30’s daughter. So if you find a good teacher treat them as you would pure gold.
Good advice. And many young students probably idealize the old Japanese instructors. And rightly so, many are very good. But others are perhaps a little more "human" and do things like drink too much etc... I know many high-level BJJ & Karate teachers that do drugs, have police records and skip out on rent. People are people, if you get a good one... Learn as much as you can while you can because schools don't last forever and teachers don't teach forever!
Love this stuff, hidden gem! I can tell this is so different from Aikido! Because Aikido never does throws full force like this! Billy's techniques are ten times better than anyone aikido!
Wonderful stuff....no tapping out on these techniques kids...each part of the technique destroyed the relevant limb and joint and ends with a kill....great Ukemi as well!

The point is that in these demonstrations we see what is implicit and not explicit....yes, resisting/live training is also necessary in ones training, but these modes of training are also of value and beautiful....it’s a demo! And a bloody good one at that!

We dont actually have video of him ground fighting with any none resisting opponents unfortunately, though there are still a few of us in the GJJA who did do some ground fighting with him, though I can promise you it was extremely one sided! Hanshi was amongst other things a 4th dan judoka and extremely talented! Looking back now, probably unfortunate that we haven't got that video, but back then people didn't record everything to the same extent they do now! Many thanks for your interest though!
Why is there even a damn debate on BJJ and JJJ? All this came from the Japanese. In which the Gracies take a lot of credit for. Everyone should loook up Kosen Judo. Befire the Gracies called it Brazilian Jiujitsu. JJJ is still one of the most effective classic martial arts out there. Even Gracie Jiujitsu is basically JJJ with their version of using leverage
This is actually quite good, I really like his use of atemi waza to execute the techniques. However we all know that one must be specially trained in Ukemi to actually be thrown like this. Most untrained people in a real situation would be taken down with just the atemi by itself and the throw would devastate them.
The big disadvantage of JJJ it's not a sport and no kumite. Drilling only can be used to solidify e.g. contact Karate, wrestling, and grappling disciplines where everything is isolated but possible to compete
Most attackers come with so much brute force & energy, that this text book tech would never work. In urban jujitsu we take what it teaching here & (modify) it to work for us with less movement & more deadly counters. I'm 6 Dan in Kenpo & 5 Dan in jujitsu. Combined the two systems & made them into one system known as a urban Jujitsu. My system, founder & chief instructor here in the states.

You say that people don't attack like that, and to an extent you are right! But the reason the attack is done like this is for the safety of the uke! Could someone use these techniques to defend themselves? Well if you are very skilled you could! But mostly you take out of it what works for you!
Sensei herein the USA, Urban Jujitsu. Good techs, but the only issues I have is the lack of reality in the response of the attacker. The urban streets don't attack like that, nor is the attacker movement controlled. In Kenpo we bring what if scenerio. This is very scriptive. We need random attacks with the teacher/instructor/sensei doing whatever tech to defend & survive.
these moves only work well because the attacker is playing along, like one step sparring,,, NO its wrong all you teachers need to show the students the truth and weaknesses with some techniques, the throws only work because the student is flowing with the moves, you guys all martial artists, do sessions where you tell oponant not to play the game, you will then see the truth.
These techniques are high effective, even in real situations. They come from the japanse ju jutsu, an ancient art of hand to hand combat of samurais and they did not joke about war. A point in favour of your comment is these techniques need to be trained many times to generate muscular memory and that is very hard.

For your information he was an 8th dan Ju-Jitsu and 4th dan Judo! When you say the techniques only work due to a compliant uki, you are right in as far as the uki goes! But this is because the uki needs this to stay safe! This is a "demonstration video, and as such shows very advanced techniques that take many years to master! It is not a video on basics! Basics are very effective at getting the job done, but don't always make entertaining videos! You need to look at things in context! This is what you could achieve, and most practitioners in the martial arts would realize that!

dude, this is an instructional video for educational purposes. Sensei often taught us to drill a good counter to different attacks (and from different sized opponents). Trust me this guy was a machine. But also a patient teacher. My ankle was fussed and my spine had been operated on before I started training so he took time out to adjust things for what I could and couldn't do. Sometimes it wasn't possible, but then he'd just teach me a different move that would work. And I can say it did work on the street when I moved out of Wales to a barracks town.

This was awesome. I'm a judo guy and love this. His technique is crisp and explosive. You can see him destroying kuzushi effortlessly.

This isn't jujutsu, this is some unknown style of Gendai Budo. This just looks like Aikido.

When you say the techniques only work due to a compliant uki, you are right in as far as the uki goes! But this is because the uki needs this to stay safe!
This is a "demonstration video, and as such shows very advanced techniques that take many years to master! It is not a video on basics! Basics are very effective at getting the job done, but don't always make entertaining videos!
You need to look at things in context! This is what you could achieve, and most practitioners in the martial arts would realize that!
Goshin Ju-jitsu UK-Wales thank you, for your reply ,, i can see the skill and i agree it is very advanced, i studied skills in Shotokan shukakia budokan, kata was advanced,, sports demonstration looked great,, but it was a different game fighting advanced fighters, i worked on the doors for many years and the skill worked great,,, im just saying mixing up the styles will help us all to get a feel for what works and what might not!!!
youtube shop what you say is true! However as ju-jitsu is where a lot of martial arts originated from, it could possibly be said that it is a mix up of styles! As a side note, knowing Sensei Doak for many years on a personnel level, he was very effective on the doors!

I’m calling BS on a lot of this. Looks more like aikido than Jiu Jitsu. No body is going to allow so much time with these robotic looking strikes.

dude, this is an instructional video for educational purposes. Sensei often taught us to drill a good counter to different attacks (and from different sized opponents). Trust me this guy was a machine. But also a patient teacher. My ankle was fussed and my spine had been operated on before I started training so he took time out to adjust things for what I could and couldn't do. Sometimes it wasn't possible, but then he'd just teach me a different move that would work. And I can say it did work on the street when I moved out of Wales to a barracks town.
