    Beach Fishing For Flatfish - Sole, Rigs, Tips & Tactics
    Sole are a small Flatfish which can be caught throughout the summer months, generally feeding under the cover of darkness they venture close inshore to feed on worms, shrimps and other crustaceans.
    They can offer some great summer sport on the right beaches and tides throughout the months of June-Septmber.
    For this latest episode we took the camera's down to Sizewell Beach in Suffolk, famous for it's power station and more importantly it's summer Sole Fishing!
    If you want to see how we fared and to see if we landed one of the target species, or if you simply want some more information on how to catch and target them, then hopefully this video may help.
    Apologies if this isn't the most fish filled video we've produced, but we hope some of the information may be useful.
    As always any comments, feedback or thumbs up is very much appreciated!
    Tight Lines

    A good tip is, if you are fishing a beach barren of worm baits is to seed the beach with any live worms left over when you finish your session. Just dig a few holes about four inches down and close to the waters edge and pop a worm in each. I did this on Portreath beach in Cornwall when I lived there and although you would occasionally pick up a dog fish or mackerel, there was very little of anything around because the beach had no good natural source of food. Ten years on, the worm had bred and spread along the beach and Bass were turning up to feed on them.

    Hi Chris,
    Yet another great video never tried for sole before so was of real interest as usual.
    The tips you giving out are a great help makes a lot of sense .. the thinking angler is a true angler.
    Nice fish !
    So many days we all experience next to perfect conditions and only get an odd fish or two or blank..but that's fishing ! it's great to see honest fishing as I call it rather than edited footage of big fish being caught and it's such a pleasure just to be out in the fresh air enjoying the surroundings.
    Nice to get a fish or two but never to be disheartened if not ..there's always another day.

Hopefully there'll be another day for more and bigger Sole! Not long till the Cod fishing season now tho!!! :-)

      Thanks phastasphuck666 glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for dropping us a comment too! Yeah me too… I guess catching Flatties was were my love for sea fishing started, when my Dad used to take me as a young'un! I still like catching them now :-) I'd love to fish over in Ireland one day, seems you have an array of different species and lots of angling opportunities! Do you ever catch Turbot, Brill or Plaice from your beaches? A few flattie species that here in Norfolk we never see! Good luck with your fishing and of course, tight lines!

      Nice one Robert - it's a lovely part of the country! Ummmm probably, with the way the fishing has been recently I'd be using small hooks and baits and trying to catch anything - I reckon there's a great chance of some bits (whiting and flatties) with the chance of a bass or two, too. Might even be worth chucking out another rod with a bigger fish bait on, with the outside chance of a Thornback Ray or something. I can't join this weekend, but perhaps another time! :-) Let us know how you get on. Be lucky, cheers Chris.

    Hi anther great episode , if you ever go fishing for flatfish again I would advice you don't youse leads on your snoods because when the bait hits the bottom the lead on your snood keeps your bait on the bottom and the sand covers your bait and also you want your bait to be able to move around in the water to attract the fish . Anther pice of advice would be to try other leads other than grip leads you could try clock leads ect.
    Great video look forward to the next one

    • @FromTheWatersEdgeTV
      @FromTheWatersEdgeTV  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks David Farrelly glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for taking the time to comment, it's much appreciated. :-) We used small leads on the line to do exactly that; keep the bait pinned to the bottom. Sole are bottom feeders and want a static bait, that doesn't move and that is pinned to the sea bed. I'd only use these leads on the snoods when fishing for Sole, as having you bait pinned to the sea bed is less of a necessity when fishing for other species. Each and everyone to there own tho :-) Looking forward to the Cod fishing season now, so hopefully a new video will be up soon. Good luck with your fishing and of course, tight lines! :-)

    Thanks for the video. I've been trying around Caister and off Gorleston pier but nothing doing. Saw a few caught out of the river. Never seen so many seals, I see one or two every session. I've been hoping for Bass and have seen them jumping right where I put my bait but the huge amounts of weed just smothered my line. The weed is making it almost impossible at the top of the tide. Any advice or ideas always welcome. Cheers.

    • @FromTheWatersEdgeTV
      @FromTheWatersEdgeTV  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi David Harvey sorry to hear your struggling at the moment, what baits have you been using? Things should start to pick up now, as the winter species head inshore. In another month or so take a trip to Hopton, Kessingland or Pakefield, fish the biggest evening tides of the month and use some big Lugworm baits, I'm sure you'll pick some fish up then! :-) When the weed is around it can be really tough… tips I'd say would be… 1.) Keep your rod up as high as you can, to keep as much line out the surf as possible 2.) Keep you rigs as simple as possible, as for every swivel, bait clip, or clip link you have, the more weed it will attract. Other than those two little tips I'm not really sure what else you can do! SOmetimes if it's too weedy it's not worth fishing, better to save your bait for another day! Hope this helps. Cheers Chris

    • @davidharvey5672
      @davidharvey5672 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have copied your cod quest baits and have used squid, sandeel, mackerel and of course lug. My biggest challenge at present is night casting, I am struggling to get a good cast. I picked up beach fishing after what must be more than 40 years and casting in the day came back to me like riding a bike but not so with night casting. I don't recall it was ever a problem apart from with multiplier reels.
      Thanks for your tips, I'll certainly try them out.

      Hi ummarqureshi these were on ready made rigs, so I'm not 100% sure! But I do know a very popular model for flatfish and other small species is the Kamasan B940M Aberdeen Match Hook, these are available in smaller sizes and are nice and fine in the wire. Hope this helps, tight lines, cheers Chris.

      Hi fadil begic we catch a fish called a Smoothound, which is a member of the Shark family. They are superb fighters and offer great sport! I prefer to return them though, I can't bring myself to take them home! Anyway, hope your fishing is going well! Tight lines, cheers Chris.

    Great video Chris! Exactly where in the UK are you? I'm definitely going to start targeting some flounder and sole here on the Oregon beaches. I catch them by mistake when targeting perch but think I'll build a few rigs that sit on the bottom and catch a few. Great job, be well and fish on! Love the accent! Mark in Oregon, USA

Plaice is a good shout, altho that might have to wait until next spring now, would like to get a similar video done for all Flatfish, so would probably be Dabs, Flounder then Plaice I reckon. Glad you enjoyed this video and thanks for taking the time to comment. Tight Lines, Cheers Chris.

    Thanks for all your videos, I've picked up loads of tips & tricks and being new to sea fishing they're invaluable.
    I have just one question though; Why do you set your rods/tripod at an angle to the sea?
    Thanks in advance and I'm looking forward to your next vid already........

    • @FromTheWatersEdgeTV
      @FromTheWatersEdgeTV  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Paul Burgess thanks for the kind comments and for taking the time to post them, glad you enjoy the video's too! :-) In regard to the rods/tripod, it's not something I alway do, but the reason for it, is because I can see the tips better and register a bite easier, rather than looking at them straight down the blanks. Hope that make sense :-) Good luck with your fishing and of course, tight lines! :-)

    There's no need to put an extra sinker on that rig to keep your bait on the bottom.. A flat fish isn't gonna swallow that bait and then proceed to run with it with the sinker until the run is transmitted to the rod tip. If you want to keep it pinned to the bottom just use a very very very small sinker right behind the hook, like a size 00. 'This may not pin it down completely, but you have a next to zero chance of feeling a bit from a lil flatfish with the extra sinker there. A lil' movement is good... plus you would be very surprised at how even in current, your bait can keep on the bottom. Fluorocarbon will also hold bottom better than mono. If you really felt the need, I suppose a size 0 crimped just behind the hook would definitely do the job and not be too heavy.

      From The Waters Edge TV No problem at all. As fishermen, there's always room for improvement, you're never ever gonna get to a point where there is nothing left to learn. Cheers!

    • @mrdeadsea7772
      @mrdeadsea7772 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** I was not criticizing' him as a person, or even criticizing his videos, didn't mean to give that impression at all. Seems like a nice guy, someone Id fish with. I was criticizing the rig as I myself know from my personal experience, that the added sinker, especially the size he was using would not allow him to detect the bite from a flounder and other small/gentle fish. 'I did not imply that I'm a better fisherman... or that I know more... or that I'm more experienced, like I said, there's always more to learn. 'Maybe what he's learned from his personal fishing experience, could be helpful to me in other ways. 'The fact of the 'matter is, the added sinker in the location it was placed, in that particular rig/set-up, would be a waste of a sinker, a waste of bait and a waste of time, kind of like how me taking the time to reply to an obvious troll is a waste of my time.

  • @deecee3573

    over complicated rig that wil tangle very easy wen casted ,an itt is better to fish with tight lines as the bottom slopes the line keeps near the bottom any way

    • @FromTheWatersEdgeTV
      @FromTheWatersEdgeTV  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi +Dee Cee the rig didn't tangle for me, in actual fact I think the small leads actually helped keep the snoods straight and away from the rig body. Also the beach doesn't slope that much there, it's not very deep, so if you do fish a tight line you can end up with a very aggressive angle to the sea bed.
