_______________ Most Used Neil Peart Drum Beat | Ride Cymbal Bell Drum Beat | Neil Peart Drum Lesson -- Get the sheet music here: stephensdrumsh...
It's not often that I say "if you want to dig in to the style of "fill in the blank" player, then you HAVE to know this drum beat". But, this is an exception. This Neil Peart drum beat is ALL OVER their recordings, usually at a high rate of speed. Which is what makes it challenging.
In this drum lesson, I break out how to play it, give you some songs that he plays it in, and then show you a variation of it just to emphasize how he utilizes the same drum beat in different songs.

The way he plays it in subdivisions has always been my favorite
Great vid. I like it in the keyboard solo in Subdivisions.
I remember learning this groove in high school and having a BLAST with it!
A lot of the tabs I read from the Rush Tabulature Project had Neil playing the bass drum on " e &" of 4 with the ride bell, so that's how I typically play it, but he varies that groove up so much, its nuances make it practically different everytime he plays it.
Marc Fernandez Yea, it’s different every song. But always the same core elements
I’ve learned the Taylor Hawkins version of this groove and I will say it’s one of my favorite ones to play.
YYZ for sure. You’re breakdown of this is brilliant. Keep it up brother!
I like the use of this pattern in "The Spirit of Radio". Great breakdown and I've found this pattern useful for the toms as well as the ride.
This is what I was waiting for! Still love this groove in Spirit of Radio...all time fav to play!
Spooks it’s so good
Thanks again, Stephen!
I’ve play that without going off the bell.
This way sounds more correct. Hard to tell when I don’t have a more pingy ride if it was me or the pattern. The bell doesn’t wash out the music as bad playing off the bell those couple times.
Thank you.
Yep, Neil uses this groove a lot! I think I like it best in La Villa because its so fast. I also enjoy it in Subdivisions.
Dude, you are a gifted teacher ! I always wanted to learn this groove. Thank you so much !
Also checkout the chorus groove of Rope by the Foo Fighters. It's the same pattern and inspired by Neil Peart.
I love every one of your videos! You are awesome!!
Another great groove . From one of the best to ever do it. Thx for bringing this to us teaching it. And breaking it down. Thx for the sheet music .
Gary C. You bet Gary
I wouldn’t even call it the bell ride groove because you can really get away with just calling it the Neil Peart ride pattern and everyone would know what you’re talking about lol really love playing it during between the wheels because the full leading into it. So much fun, thanks for the breakdown
Thanks so much for what you do..you are sincere and it shows how much you care about drum education...you've explained some things that i was hearing completely wrong... i usually go with feel more than trying to duplicate his exact sticking, i see the errors of my ways...thanks to you..and i mean that in a great way..know that what you do is appreciated by so many...all the best...joe - the professor is smiling down from above for what you do..r.i.p. "the professor"
Spirit of Radio is the most obvious example to me. I don't know if it's because the guitar and bass work so in tandem with it or if it's the mixing, but I always think of Spirit when I hear it, even in earlier songs.
I love, love, love playing this groove. Or at least, I've loved playing a much more simplified version of it (basically imagine snare only on 2 and 4, but same ride pattern). It's Neil's little leitmotif, and it always brings me joy when I hear it :)
Nice work, thanks for doing this one !
Great series, Stephen! Very helpful.
This groove has always reminded me of Latin cymbal grooves. An important reminder as to why all aspiring rock drummers need to study jazz drumming!
Taylor Hawkins used something similar in Rope
David 99 indeed he did
And he did it right
And it sounded awesome
Dude I love it. My cymbals are very dark so the bell is dark and it sounds odd playing this part. But I can't wait to dig this!
Awesome breakdown man! Thanks!
have to say I loved this series so much I bought a work in progress and anatomy of a drum solo
joe b then I did my job ;^)
Glad it sparked a fire in you
Limelight is the one im always asked to play!
Thank u for lesson always wanted to get those grooves thanks for the help. Love ur vids
Keith Cramer you bet Keith...and thank you!
More like this lesson thanks you awesome 👏
Could you do a video (not sure if you have I can’t find it) on how to read sheet music for drummers? Have a little difficulty and would love for my favorite TH-camr to walk me through it
HoverxD i have a whole series on that in the members area on my website
Hey man, awesome job! You know I love this series, awesome to see you covering these awesome parts. My favorite use of this pattern is the 6/4 variant in Subdivisions during the choruses, keyboard leads, and solo.
Idk if you're planning on filming anymore episodes on this series, but I think some amazing, teachable Neil parts are the fill at 3:53 in Natural Science, the hi-hat/ride bell groove right before that fill (3:42-3:52), and the intro groove to Animate. Ik there's a ton of teachable moments in Neil's playing, so I thought I'd maybe just point out a couple particularly great ones. Again, great video, man. Can't wait to watch what you continue to put out
Conor Reed great variant!
awesome video, as usual..thanks for what you do...freewill too, i believe, has that groove
Joseph Greenfield I believe it does. And you’re more than welcome
Freewill has a similar groove in parts, but its not like the ride beat in Subdivisions, Spirit, or Red Barchetta.
Great Lesson ! i have just noted that i do this beat wrong. thanks for the lesson !
Gustavo Vieira you be Gustavo
I know this is from 2018 and links break. If you ever get a chance coudl you re-link the sheet music? Thanks !
0:43 How do you keep coming up with such revolutionary groove names? You're on it \m/
HidefVince I’ve already put in for a copyright to that name. Next one is the “hihat fast open on the and groove thing”.
Here are all the Rush songs (as far as I can find) that use the broken ride pattern or a variation of it. Interestingly some of them only appear in the live versions of the songs. I don't count The Anarchist as all he's doing is adding an extra 16th note to beat 4 and there's no missing out of a ride note while the backbeat is being played which I think is an essential element of the broken ride groove (the same goes for the studio versions of Secret Touch and Far Cry). So here's the list of songs:
Hemispheres - guitar solo
La Villa Strangiato - main theme
The Spirit of Radio - instrumental sections
Red Barchetta - end of choruses
YYZ - B sections
Subdivisions - end of choruses
Between the Wheels - pre-choruses
The Big Money - last verse (Live only)
Middletown Dreams - 2nd and 3rd choruses
Time Stand Still - end of choruses
Lock and Key - guitar solo
Face Up - most of the song
Where’s My Thing? - B sections
Neurotica - choruses
You Bet Your Life - outro
Cold Fire - choruses
Secret Touch (Live only) - end of choruses and outro
Far Cry (Live only) - choruses
Carnies - bridge
Very funky
sTILL AMAZING . .
Hi Stephen, thanks for explaining Neil Peart's complicated ride bell fill. I would like to download the sheet music but I get the following error on your web page. "This page couldn’t be found. The page you’re looking for may have been moved." Would you mind double checking your URL? Thanks!
I hate to nitpick, but it's "The Spirit Of Radio," not "Spirit Of The Radio," in reference to the 0:10 mark.
Nobody and I mean NOBODY can make this groove feel quite the same way..... when Neil plays it , it is so interesting and moving , he must be adding something subtle
His dynamics and accenting are what sets it apart. Neil also plays very hard and uses a ride cymbal with a pingy/pangy bell that really stands out and when he's purposely not playing every stroke on the ride at the same strength, it gives a depth and groove that most people just don't care to develop or even realize. People think this grove is moderately difficult, but if you actually play it correctly exactly how Neil play it, it's definitely an advanced groove because of the dynamic intricacies he puts into it. I've only seen a couple drummers truly replicate this groove correctly.
Thanks! R.i.p
ace work. The YYZ fills next pleeeeaaase :D
My favorite is on between the wheels
Hey Stephen you should try to tackle something Dream Theatre related sometime if you're up to it!
Portnoy or Mangini?
@@HidefVince Gotta go Portnoy, i love mangini but portnoy was amazing
TheMMOptimist Love portnoy
do that with 16ths on the bass drum underneath. I use that CONSTANTLY!!!!
I cannot download the sheet 😩
Is this the same groove that he uses in Freewill?
Far cry is a tasty groove also👍
The Neil Peart ride hop
You know your back here again to learn this grove right?!
Hola! ¿como estas? ¿podrías ponerle subtitulos en español a estos videos? para poder entender mejor, Aún así lo poco que entendí está bueno!, buen video!, saludos!.
5:03 kinda sounds like Animate
Almost.
I already know what it is before I listen. It can be doubled on the kick.
David Marley indeed it can
As Neil says, self-plagiarism is style. This was his failed attempt at working on the Latin cascara pattern. I remember listening to YYZ in middle school and thinking this pattern was impossible. I’ve been able to play it for years now, and even use it in one of the songs I do with the church I play with.
I don't know how to read sheet music
Oh yeah, that bit.
He plays two ghost notes in this fill, not just one. Just watch him play it.
I always thought Carter Beauford used a similar beat in Drive In Drive Out but I think that's in 6/8 , Would love to see a Carter series!
I have two words for you, Stephen-BILL BRUFORD. Would love to hear you dig into his work.
Time stamp 0:29, 10:40
Hi Taylor 👋
Nima sherpa what up Nima!
Sounds like the beat from nightmare by avenged sevenfold
i abuse this beat, i play different variations but i admit i pull this one out of my tool box
YYZ. Those off time china cymbal hits to punctuate it UMMMM better than sex.
LTDLimiTeD1995 you and I have had different sexual experiences then. But it’s a good part for sure.
Yea..thats it..but some reason noone can Actually duplicate that sound...
Don't tell me... you're a Neil Peart fan? ;-)
noferblatz Lol, this was Just voted as my next artist series after Bonham
playing it that slow makes it so out of context - i play by ear. need to hear it at tempo
