I checked the MOT a few weeks ago when I spotted it in the background on another video. It's been flagging rust for the last 5 years including the front chassis rails. It's not what you can see on one of these, it's what you can't.
My neighbour has one a few years younger. Bodywork & roof look very good but he told me the chassis is rusting. An M.O.T. revealed this to him. He's not sure whether to stick or twist.

Yep. Had a mk1 and 2. The former is the best car I’ve owned. In fact the mechanic at the main dealer bought it at the mazda main dealer bought it he was that impressed with it. Wish i’d kept it as the mk2 wasn’t as good for me.

Would recommend anyone thinking of buying one to speak to your local owners club. They are everywhere and there will be plenty of knowledgeable owners to get advice from (and a few bores!). As well as the easily visible rust areas, these mk2s can rust on the front chassis rails, which will be expensive to fix. I’ve had a mk1, which I actually made a profit on, 2 mk2s and a mk3. Never known anyone who had a problem with engine or gearbox, rust is the only thing that will kill them. Not a super fast car, but great fun to drive. Owners clubs have regular meet ups and club drive outs as well as some motorsports, if that’s your thing.
Likely most Mk I and II's have been wrecked, rusted out or ended up as racing cars. This is still one of the best small sports cars ever made, with stone cold reliability, good handling, fun to drive. I would love to drive one of these on a curvy A, B or no-classification road in the country. So you lost some money on the deal, but it made for a good video and kept on the road for a few more years.
Right Matt, i've looked at your monthly sales figures, you've sold no gap, tyre and alloy insurance, no paint protection and made a loss on your cars sold, so unfortunately im gunna have to let you go son. 😂 but keep the videos coming.
Why would anyone drive an mx5 with four different tyres. They are completely missing the point of why and how an mx5 drives on winding country roads... john
Well, things just happen.. maybe one blown up, then another puncture there.. combined with a low budget and you have a V6 with 3 brands of spark plugs like I found in my car 😂
Matt, respect for keeping another modern classic on the road. I've personally owned 3 MX5'S all 1.6 manuals too. My last MX5 funnily enough was exactly the same as your in the video, 1.6 Mk2.5 in silver and mine also was a 2003, mine was 87k and immaculate underneath, i regret selling that last year for £1900... Admittedly the 110bhp is slow but they are a proper drivers car. My first car was an MX5 and they'll always be special to me. Theirs just something about them... The sheer cheapness, and extreme reliability of these makes them a joy to own. Great content Matt as per ❤
Hats off to you, sir. You just can't resist doing the right thing even if it hurts your pocket. You are in danger of giving second-hand car dealers a good name!
Perfect. Second hand roof catch off the bay, also jdm rims, induction kit, sports exhaust, lower it, drift gear knob. Drive it like you stole it and have very low cost fun.
Thirty-five quid loss, but another good little car saved, and another happy driver buzzing around enjoying affordable motoring. Matt, you'll get your reward in heaven, but may you have to wait many years to see it. Merry Christmas.
Great little cars. My wife had a black one and we loved it. We used to bomb down to the Dordogne in it. Roof down. Never ever let us down. Replaced it with a mk 3 which had nowhere near the same character.
I loved my Mk2 back in the day... owned it for 6 weeks, went pretty much everywhere sideways, sold it when I was sure I could hear a diff whine (import model so had the LSD). Great little cars
Need to make sure the drain holes are unblocked at the back of the seat belt mounts , normally stick a straightened wire coat hanger down them to the road. Blocks up from road grime, then you have water trapped inside. Can be a rot box tgese cars. Also, change gearbox oil and oil under the manual gear selector
Loved the video. My son and I travelled from Scotland to Kent in the summer past to pick up a Mk1 in red and drove it back home the next day and it has not missed a beat since and passed it's MOT with only a couple of advisory's. Any mechanics or tyre fitters that have seen it have all said it is the cleanest they have ever come across. My son loves it as his second car but has kept his Fiesta for winter driving and garaged the MX5 with his grandparents for the winter until he graduates this spring. I shared this with him as I am sure he will be interested.
Oh dear, Matt you've bought a rot box full of filler! That offside sill has been poorly repaired and the nearside rear arch looks full of filler also. Whatever you do don't stick a screwdriver in anywhere!
You didn't look underneath did you? Both rear wings clearly had repairs at the bottom near the doors. I bet the front chassis legs were repaired at a guess.... before I watch to the end
I have almost the same, NB 2.5 Sport with LSD and 6 speed etc! I have welded the car extensively, replacement inner panels, external, front chassis rails new wings, lots of floor welding, just check it out as these rust really badly!
Good morning Matt, thank you for uploading another video. Just moved to Stockport, went to a nice Italian near your garage last night, lovely food. Ged.
Covered some good points well done To add to some of what you said; yes these come with a 6 speed too, and that roof wasn't closed properly and even when it's closed you can adjust how tight it holds on
I keep going back and forth between an Audi TT and an MX5. Which Mx5 do you find the best all round. I’m not a mechanic so I need something bullet proof
@@sladey31 The MK3 is a very nice "Touring Car and not as noisy at the Mk1 and Mk2's. £35 loss, along with your time and effort! However, the buyer is likely delighted with a sorted NB MX5, and you've probably reinforced your good name with the buying public, and that sir, is priceless. I'd happily buy a car from you.🙂
Oh Matt, instead of massively overspending.... you've massively under-sold. 😁Honestly, I'm glad you saved it too. Those are great little sporty cars that harken back to the glory days of British roadsters.... Before foreign-made hatchbacks took over. Just so surprised you sold it for a loss.
Yes, Mk2 Sport had the 6 speed box. I still think it had the nicest dash of Mk2, Mk3 and Mk4 and was so sweet to scoot around a bendy road on a Summer evening. Great choice, hope the rust hasn’t done for it.
I owned one for eight years. I bought it off my parents, who'd owned it from new. Unfortunately, after six years for me, it failed the MOT due to too much of the inevitable tin worm. Another two years later, I sold it to my friend, who welded all the rotten bits properly & enjoyed it for another year. It was finally sold to someone local to me and ended up looking like an accordion after a bus rammed it outside their house! At least the roof, engine and wheels were salvaged though by the scrap dealer.
Had an Mx-5 now got a Z3. Yes the MX-5 is the better car to drive but I just love the looks of the BMW. Find myself taking a second look when I walk away from it, never did that with the MX-5. Both great cars for pennies.
MX-5 specialist & breakers & parts specialist in Pontefract area. Had an NC 2.0 which was a brilliant car. Experience I have with the NC i would definitely pay the extra over an NB.
As a MGB fan, even when the US safety cops made British Leyland stick on a ugly front end which BL did a pretty nice job with it. I like the Mazda 5, but it’s a sultry tart you can take out for a great time and forget her till the urge hits you and take her out again .The MGB demanded a relation ship, great every once and a while, but every waking hour she needed to keep the commitment going evenings of feet rubs back rubs with her falling to sleep, not a bit of concern for you and your needs, but she looked so good.
Our 25 year old mk.2 is sitting on the drive awaiting attention to the large fresh air vents in the chassis legs and lower rear arches. Little car owes us nothing so a few quid spent should give us another few years of fun driving. On the other hand I might just weigh it in and sell the hardtop!😂
Ive owned my Mk2.5 vvt Sport from new which I bought in 2002, it has just passed 40,000 miles. Before that I owned a Mk2 1.8iS. I only use it in summer months and its always garaged. In an unheated, poorly ventilated garage, if the weather changes quickly from cold to mild, condensation will form on all metal surfaces, inside and out. MX5's rot from the inside irrespective of whether the drain holes are clear or not. The only way I've managed to save it from the rust bug is to early on spray inside all box sections with Dinitrol and to annually spray inside body cavities with spare engine oil. All versions of MX5 rust, it's in the genes. Also the roof closure brackets are adjustable, so don't necessarily need to be replaced. Finally, owners should put a drop of oil on the end of the alternator pivot bolt to stop it seizing. It's a devil of a job to access the bolt if you need to adjust belt tension and if the bolt is seized you're stuffed. Don't ever intend to sell the car, it's great fun.
@@oilyrag525 Spot on advice mate...I've had Mk1s to Mk4s but just bought a 2004 1.6 Euphonic with 24,000 on the clock in Velocity red....it's in having back ends of the cills repaired (yes, roof drains blocked) before they get worse then I'll keep it and look after it forever!
I've had plenty of Mk1's & Mk2's, currently l've a mint 1992 Mk1 but the Mk2 is a better car IMO, it's way more refined to drive daily or a long distance. The rust/rot issues are way overplayed, my car is 32 years old, original and has zero body rust and no underneath rot, it's all about maintenance....
@@saltaireorangebicyclechopp8555 i found the opposite. The MK1 put a smile on my face as it did with random people too. They loved the pop up headlights and its simplicity. Both were 1.8s but the older one felt more involved when driven hard and was more of an occasion. Gutted i traded it in.
I paid £3500 for my 2001 mk2.5. Was supposed to be "clean" but the front chassis legs were rotten and the catalytic converter was blown. I ended slapping in a sports cat and spending at least £1500 on the rust repairs. Since then I've put many miles on it and had no issues, but to anyone out there be careful as there are alot of people trying to fork off their dodgy cars as "clean".
It's probably a good time to buy a convertible, because you'd probably get it for the right price. Tin worm can be a particular issue with these, so it needs a good check over....
I had one.... great cars, they drive so well. I changed my roof for a mohair roof from a mx5 breaker. They are sensitive to tyres and pressures too. Such a shame they rust.
Had a new one in 2002 52 plate 13k new. In British racing green. Was nice but at 9k miles had a knock from thr back end Mazda didn't know what was wrong with it. Came with Yoko tyres new. Sold for one of the first 182 in the country happy times.
Now this is a good video. Nice car, nice save, money from ad revenue and you got to save something someone else wouldnt have been able to. Love it. When you going back to auction , when the Laguna is sold? 😅
I had a couple of Mazdas from the 2000s and they just rusted away. The new ones seem better, but Mazda definitely had a problem with their metal from that period. Of course, Quebec’s winter roadsalt didn’t help…
Fabulous cars MX5, I had a mk3.5 15reg (3 yrs old) 8000 miles , what I paid for it from Mazda the 15reg’s fetch the same now with 50-60k on the clock… but absolutely fabulous car…😊
Sill looks like its going, surprised you didnt clock that. These mk2.5's are a nightmare for rust and why people tend to avoid them. Potential customer will be sticking screwdriver in everywhere
Seeing the long list of advisories at 2:26 including the typical rust issues I knew you have massively overspent just by paying 1.600 pounds for this example 😅.
To avoid a 'soggy bottom' (and the occasional dodgy spillage!) why don't you keep a stash of plastic seat covers in your car for when you test drive your latest acquisitions?
Local car to me that. Was sold at Ben Hodgson Cars in the next village along, and I used to see it bombing about Carlisle often. It'll make a canny motor, and be worth doing eventually! 😂
Beware, these cars are a gateway car.. I had a mk2, then a mk1, then a mk3 but never really fell in love with any of them, so I bought a Porsche Boxster 2.7, then a3.2S and again they left me a bit cold. I now have a 911 which really hits the sports car spot!
I love the MX5`s but they`re such rot boxes, yes a mint mk1 or 2 will exist, at a price! but personally i would not have touched that one, you could see where it had "been rusty" and given a quick once over to brighten it up, i would think the engine will go on forever but welding will be a constant nightmare for the new owner...
Just started watching and I am feeling the sense of another MX5 rot box ? The mot history is a bit shocking, is it going to be another I massively over spent episode ❤
I sold a really nice trilogy edition the other week, took 1600 quid, due to time of year. Unfortunately it didn't end up they're, kid I sold it to actually blew it up, as you know nb Mx5 engines are bullet proof. I sent him 700 quid, so I actually got 900 quid for the car, obviously lost about a grand on the deal. Nb, s are getting very rusty now, a rear wishbone actually snapped due to rust on one last year.
I always admire your "glass half full" approach and " kept it on the road" mind set . However this was/is a rusty nail . Just looking at the "bubbles" on the wings and the plastered up and rattle can sprayed sills tells all . Add then the "welding" for MOT and this should have gone in one direction ......the crusher. You did well to keep the loss to 35 quid. I just hope the new owner can MIG weld .
A huge number of people haven't got a clue or don't care when it comes to tyres. So they replace them one by one as they fail an Mot and end up with a technically legal car with 4 different el cheapos of differing tread depth.
They get a phone call from the MOT place saying "You need a new tyre" and they reply saying "Just fit a cheap one." They buy cheap tyres because they don't care.
This is my number one channel to discover new tyre brands I've never ever heard of before 😊.

Front chassis legs are the concern.
My last mx5 I broke had massive dangerous holes in the legs, but on the outside it looked mint!!!
Yep, always the first thing to check with the mk2
It first failed an MOT 5 years ago for rust. It is now on cheap tyres and pretty unloved, I wouldn't have walked away, I would have run!
Recovery truck! Hopefully we will get to see a video off it in the near future😎
Still worth it ... Well done Matt
Like the MR2 Roadster. Immense fun and bullet proof.
Great to see a little plug for hardwike circus! Great up and coming little band
Now this is a good video. Nice car, nice save, money from ad revenue and you got to save something someone else wouldnt have been able to. Love it. When you going back to auction , when the Laguna is sold? 😅
You're looking well my friend, merry Christmas.
I had a couple of Mazdas from the 2000s and they just rusted away. The new ones seem better, but Mazda definitely had a problem with their metal from that period. Of course, Quebec’s winter roadsalt didn’t help…
Had one they are the best car ever very low maintenence.
Sold it a few years ago with a heavy heart.
💔
Great cars - I had a mk 1 a few years back - just pure driving
Fabulous cars MX5, I had a mk3.5 15reg (3 yrs old) 8000 miles , what I paid for it from Mazda the 15reg’s fetch the same now with 50-60k on the clock… but absolutely fabulous car…😊
That rear sill looks iffy that’s going to be a lot of work for someone
Hardwick Circus are a Carlisle group. Worth listening to if you've still got the CD.
Sill looks like its going, surprised you didnt clock that. These mk2.5's are a nightmare for rust and why people tend to avoid them. Potential customer will be sticking screwdriver in everywhere
Excellent videos these, exactly the right length.
Something very Ali Carter, Scott Parker about our host.
Could be brothers.
Cheers 👍👍
FYI Hardwicke Circus is a roundabout in Carlisle. Is the interior still damp because your windows were steaming up ? Great video.
Looking at the condensation inside it will take a few months to dry out.
I had a 2003 mk2.5 in the blue/purple colour. It was a 1.8 and was indeed a 6 speed.
Rust killed it.
Matt, every time I see what the weather does to your cars I think to myself hey maybe South Africa isn’t so bad actually 😂
Haha I could do with some sunshine tbh
The driver side rear sill looks a bit dodgy. 🤔
Awww mate gutted with that loss, but you kept it on the road 12 more months!
Seeing the long list of advisories at 2:26 including the typical rust issues I knew you have massively overspent just by paying 1.600 pounds for this example 😅.
I understand the sentiment of "a 35 pound loss is neither here nor there" since a 35 pound profit would not have kept you out the water either.
To avoid a 'soggy bottom' (and the occasional dodgy spillage!) why don't you keep a stash of plastic seat covers in your car for when you test drive your latest acquisitions?
Best little roadsters on the road would have been nice with a bit of profit but hey ho another one saved matt well done 👏
Well done Matt. Another classic saved by you. £35 loss for no pie 🥧 chips for you at the etihad 😅. Packed lunch’s.🤷♂️👌🏴
It’s an MX5….. just a brilliant car.
It's had a hard top at some stage, as the studs for it have been fitted.
Just started watching and I am feeling the sense of another MX5 rot box ? The mot history is a bit shocking, is it going to be another I massively over spent episode ❤
A car that has not remotely been looked after in its past.
Another classic saved - hooraaah
That rust will only get worse😁, but great video as always.👍
So glad you got a vehicle for pick up great idea
You cant polish a turd but you can roll it in glitter ( new roof) :-)
An utter dogs turd of a car. I bet the ebayer couldn't believe his luck he got 16hundred for it.
Chassis rails and inner rear sills on the way out. Write off.
Can’t argue with Mazda solid reliable cars nice video
Beats me why people try to save a few quid by fitting rubbish tyres on their cars.
Some people don’t have lots of money that’s why!
@@Tuffluk Nah. 4 ling longs last about 10,000 miles whereas 4 yokohamas or hankooks will last 30 to 40,000 miles.
@@michaelthompson6885 My 1.5 Mk4 ND went through a set of OE Yokahamas in under 20,000!
