  • Kristin Flanary, Communications Director, Wife & Mother, and SCA Rescuer (-aka- Lady Glaucomflecken), spoke to Avive about the night her young husband, Will Flanary, suffered a Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) in his sleep. Kristin was unexpectedly called upon to provide 10 minutes of CPR, ultimately saving his life.
Kristin describes how the 911 dispatcher recognized that Will was in SCA, and provided her with CPR instructions over the phone. She describes that night, how her family has coped, and some of the survivorship issues that young survivors face.

Amazing wife Mrs. Flanary! Using humor helps a lot of traumatic situations, thank you both!

My father was a young survivor of a massive stroke, and I love Kristin’s message about having a sense of humor to help deal with trauma. My mom and dad both had an amazing sense of humor and it helped us through therapy, and through some of the hardest parts of recovery. Dad was able to work another 25 years until retirement at 72, and he always stayed optimistic. He was brilliant with word play and puns.

That was exactly my question when I learned about Dr.s cardiac arrest. What caused it? Why?

The most I've ever done was 3 rounds of CPR (so 6 minutes) and I could barely move my arms for about a week!

Keep planting the seeds of encouragement and spreading the medicine of laughter. Your life stories show the need for community support and health education. Preventive medicine, healthy lifestyles, and early detection and treatment save lives especially in the areas of cardiac health and oncology, both areas of your personal experience. We (I) learn best from stories. We need to balance our physical, mental, and spiritual health. Keep leading the way. GJBrownDO 1/17/2023 13:35 Eastern

Yaay the "Glaucomfleckens" 😄. Lovely to see them thive!
A side note for either the team who made or edited this, but there's too much blue light/filter and it looks a tad strange that the white of their eyes is kinda blue-ish, amongst other stuff. You may wanna tune down on that for future productions if you hadn't yet!

Did you do the compressions with him laying on the bed or did you have to move him onto the floor too so the compressions were more effective?

And how did they manage during the transfer from upstairs to downstairs in terms of compressions/resuscitation?

You should use the bed sheets to put them on the floor for more effective compressions but in her situation, she says on the Sawbones podcast, she was recovering from neck surgery and was worried she would cause more injuries transferring him to the floor so she did chest compressions on the bed.

Dr. Flanary and his wife do incredible work on social media and in the community to raise awareness about Sudden Cardiac Arrest. We are grateful for the positivity and hope they bring to this issue.

To be fair, I think this is in response to the other video from Will’s perspective where he shares that his wife deleted all of his social media apps from his phone in the hospital. Her reasoning was that if he could download Twitter, remember his password, and generate a tweet, he must really be okay and was still himself.
