Ever since tolls went cashless, EZ Pass has been a nightmare. If you fail to pay your tolls to the MTA, Port Authority of NY & NJ, or to the NYS Thruway Authority within 30 days, for any reason, a $100.00 violation penalty is added to your bill. This is insanity!
In addition, if you are in arrearage for too long of a time, EZ Pass notifies the DMV, and the DMV suspends your vehicle's registration. They also send you to collections, which impacts your credit score. If the arrearage continues to persist, the tolling authority sues the motorist in NYC Civil or Supreme Court.
The debt is crushing and the process totally unfair. However, there is a way to handle and manage this. What must be done is to go directly to the individual tolling authority to (1) determine how much you owe; (2) negotiate a reduction; and (3) get you on a payment plan.
Our law firm has successfully managed this problem for dozens of clients. VT no tolls anywhere in the state
EZ-PASS is a horrendous scam with every licensed driver in the Tri-State as their victims. I want to take EZ Pass to court and put their call in phone service on cross examination. The entire cross examination will consist of staying on hold for anywhere between 2-8 hours before someone answers the call. The judge will have to recess court 2-3 times before the witness examination is thoroughly completed.
Is there is a way to start a class action lawsuit against the state? I moved out an an apartment and I had a mail forwarding to the new address. I had an e-zpass in my car, but it was old enough that wasn't being captured. Now, 30 dollars fine turned into 400 dollar.
There is a federal class action lawsuit in federal court, it was dismissed on summary judgment in favor of EZ Pass, and the dismissal is being challenged on appeal.

I'm a software engineer and there is no way they didn't have a malicious intention when they designed their website. Do you know the law firms that are appealing?

@Ahmed Hassan that was my problem too with the website! You couldn't look back and pay bills that were from the month before or something like that. One thing led to another and now I owe them 28,000 I think.

Tell ez pass to send you a bill. Trust me on this. Because what constitutes a bill is when value is exchanged. You can only legally and lawfully pay a bill, not notices. Ez pass sends you a notice not a bills. They always say “payment due”. But they need to send a bill. Take it to court and pay money to fight it, even if it costs a lot to file. The problem is the 100 late fee in 30 days on a 3 dollar toll I heard there was a class action lawsuit challenging the late fee as excessive. Have you heard of this?
From what I understand, the class action lawsuit was dismissed on the defendant's summary judgment motion.

I cosigned for my neice vehicle which I have never driven. Tickets from Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey and New York are constantly coming to my house in my name. In January 2022 almost everyday. First off, let this be a lesson to anyone who sees this - NEVER co-sign a loan. This includes student loans and Parent Plus loans for your kid's college. When someone needs a co-signer, the bank is literally telling you that they know the person is not going to re-pay them. So the co-signer gets 100% of the risk with 0% of the benefit. That said, the only way tolls are accruing under your name is if you are not only the co-signer, but also either the registered owner, or the co-registered owner. Clearly your niece is highly irresponsible and has no respect for you. Here you are, helping her out with a vehicle, and she is causing you serious legal problems. The FIRST THING you need to figure out is whom the vehicle is titled to. It can be registered to you but not titled to you, or you can be the titled owner, or the co-titled owner. If you are the sole titled owner guess what, it's your car not hers. This can cause you untold problems, and even if you are just on the registration it can cause you problems, because for example, suppose she stops paying the auto insurance - guess what - the DMV suspends YOUR license as a registered owner of a car without insurance. If she gets into an accident YOU are liable as the registrant of the vehicle. If I were you I would have a family meeting, make her produce the registration and title, and then do what you have to do to get your name off of the title and registration, and also make her pay the damn tolls. You'll still be a co-signer of the loan, but that's a separate issue. If the car is titled solely to you, it's your car so she has little leverage you can just take it from her. If it's co-titled no so much leverage. Whatever you do, you need to put a boot up her ass and fix this thing ASAP.

They can't "transfer" it because you are dealing with separate tolling authorities. When they said "you are set" they meant only for that tolling authority that you were settling at that time.

Also wanting to add that Massachusetts has partnered with NY DMV to get your vehicle information suspended for non payment in Massachusetts.. at minimum MA doesn't charge predatory fees like NY state does.

You know Staten Island was "allegedly" impounding cars from people who weren't paying tolls. I don't know if it was a scare tactic or if it actually happened but if it did, is it legal to do that??? Can they actually impound your vehicle for not paying tolls legally? All they can do is send it to a college agency last time I checked.
The NYC Marshall's will impound any car that is parked on a street and the vehicle registration is expired or suspended. It's legal.

The Port Authority DOES have a payment plan, but you must escalate your matter directly to the Port Authority through an application process. this whloe ezpass situation is horrible i owe like 6200 in violation fees my registration was suspended did not know, ended up getting my car taken away and until i pay that amount i cant get my car back or register another car. i still was paying my car note but now my car is at auction. this whole thing is a nightmare and robbery.

What the f** are you "paying"? The "Charge" is a CREDIT. Accept it and Return for Discharge. You cannot "pay" one debt with another "debt note". Its 2024 and people still have no clue. Hey! My husband has his registration suspended through mta he owed like 30,000.
We made some payments it went to court the judge threw out his registration fine but we're stuck...
They're now garnishing his wages. He can't drive the car we're paying on and still paying the insurance. We have no other vehicle.

Huge amount? I have clients that owe $80,000 and even more. My suggestion is to pay the tolls and violations and more importantly figure out why you are not timely paying your tolls and fixing the problem so that it does not happen again.

So I owe 9k and was put on a payment plan in June. Car was suspended but I was able to lift it a week after. Because I haven't been making much, my payment plan has been differed and allegedly I'm not allowed to make another plan unless I speak to a supervisor. My experience has been that once you default on a payment plan they don't allow you go on another one. If you cannot afford it and your vehicle is again suspended you can discharge the debt in bankruptcy and they DMV will have to lift the suspension once you declare bankruptcy. I've literally been battling bladder and kidney cancer and I literally had my kidney removed and the cancer has come back every single 3 months, the only hospital that is able to help me is in Philadelphia and my only option to getting to that hospital for my treatments and for my surgeries is to take the turnpike, I tried making conscience efforts to pay down my balance but they wouldn't accept the money that I was offering and I couldn't afford to pay any more, and it was either choose to not get my surgeries and my chemo treatments and die or keep taking the turnpike and racking up the fees I've tried calling them so many times to make an effort and they won't accept it and now Pennsylvania suspended my registration and I've been forced to cancel my appointments and now the cancer has come back for the 6th time and I don't have any way of getting my treatments anymore and they said that if I wait any longer it's going to spread deeper into my muscular tissue, this is so sad that I don't know what to do I feel so helpless
Drive a different vehicle to your appointments. Have someone drive you. Rent a car if you have to.

Hello I received a letter head notice from a law firm Peter Merani to pay my ez pass debt . He has informed my that his client ( the port authority of NY & NJ ) has agreed to settle a 6000.00 dollar debt for 2,000 dollars . Is this a reputable agency ? The original debt owed is 850.00 dollar and 4,200.00 dollars of fees . Since I am disabled I dont have a bank account and would need to use a money order using money that would be lent to me by a family member ,is that a safe way to pay if this firm is legit ? Any advice would be helpful .I am worried I will get scammed and still owe the money . I spoke to someone named Tony Forde and he confirmed the letter sent . Is it safe to have my mom pay it with her checking account ? Is it better to use a money order ?

Do you really think that Peter Merani, who makes money hand over fist doing it right, would "hee-hee / haa-haa" risk everything by stealing a mere $2,000.00? The problem is not Merani the problem is people who are unrepresented don't realize that the law firm representing a client is adversarial to you and your interests. The problem is not them it's you. You signed a stipulation of settlement that you did not understand, and still owe money. The settlement you signed was for a single tolling authority for an inventory of tolls from one date to another date. What you owe money for is tolls OUTSIDE OF the dates you settled for. It could be for that same tolling authority but different dates, or for a totally different tolling authority. Go back to the document you signed, go find a quite corner of your home, get a cup of coffee, and read the agreement you signed line-by-line and digest the agreement and understand what you settled. Then, find out what you still owe for. I guarantee they are not for one in the same of which you settled. And next time, hire a lawyer to represent you.
@@michaelpalumbo4880 I did finally get receipt of payment today but yesterday received payment reminder as it was due by today and that made me get nervous . I read the agreement I signed and all is good but only for period from when it started and when it ended because I was a dope by ignoring it . Your right I still owe 3 more violations outside of the agreement that still need attention .The problem I had was that I was getting a payment reminder one day before the agreement expired and that sounded to me like I was getting duped as my bank informed me that the check was cashed days earlier , thank you for your time and response... The only way I was able to settle this was by going to the toll booths and ask how to pay it . I finally found how to pay it and got it paid . I had a few violations from 2014-2019, for around $750. I got letters from Peter Maranis office harassing me and saying with his fees I owe over $6600 . So for about 2 years I paid them over $2,000, until one day I called port authority and they said to just pay the balance on the website . I now am at zero of all violations on the ezpass website . But Marini and his goons are still harassing me saying they’re gonna subpoena me and contact my job to dock my wages over not paying maranis made up fees . What do I do ?
First off, I know Peter Merani and their lawyers and staff well. I have known them for over 20 years when I defended collection actions against insurance companies and they were representing the plaintiffs. They are not goons they are a professional law firm representing a client and actually very easy to deal with. They are transparent and helpful, however they are not there to represent your interests but that of their client. This is why you should have your own attorney representing you. Any lawsuit or collection action is likely NOT over what you settled from outstanding tolls from between 2014-2019. They are likely notifying you of debt you owe subsequent to what you previously settled, or debt you owe to a different tolling agency than what you previously settled. Dealing with a tolling issue is a minutiae, attention to detail activity. You can't make gross statements that you already paid without knowing exactly the tolling authority and the dates, times, locations, and amounts of what the tolling authority, through their counsel or collection agent, is saying that you owe. Once you know EXACTLY what they are alleging you owe, you can produce proof of prior payment to resolve the issue. Should you decide to hire me to represent you, I will get spreadsheets showing the dates, times, locations, and amounts you owe. Whatever is still outstanding, I can get you either a reduction or a payment plan, or sometimes both a reduction and payment plan, depending on nuances too detailed to go into here. Sound like it's from the Port Authority. Just because you don't have an EZ Pass does not mean you don't have to pay tolls. The toll plaza photographs your plate and mails you a bill. If you are saying you never drove in the Northeast then that's a problem that needs to be remediated. If you did accrue the toll just pay it. If you did not if you want to hire my office I can review the bill, confirm its origin, and consult you on who to contact and what you need to do to dispute it and report the error. In fact, please cite your authority for the proposition that in order for something to be constitutional there must be a statue covering it.
Port authority doesnt do payment plans mta does. PA ONLY DOES ONE TIME PAYMENTS
You are wrong. What you did was call the phone number on the suspension notice, which is 718-313-9425, and they told you that the Port Authority does not offer payment plans. That is not true. That number DOES NOT go to the Port Authority or the DMV. That number is for the Customer Service Center, which is a 3rd party collection agency called Conduent. Conduent is a collection agency that all three NYS tolling authorities (MTA, NYS Thruway, and Port Authority) use to resolve the tolling arrearages when the toll payer is pending registration suspension. Each of those tolling authorities gives Conduent different authority to settle the matter. The Port Authority DOES NOT allow Conduent to execute on a payment plan. What I do for my clients is kick the issue directly up to the Port Authority and negotiate a payment plan settlement agreement directly with the Port Authority. Thus far this year, through June 5, 2023 I have represented about 20 clients and obtained for them a payment plan. I was going to delete this comment but I'd rather call you out for the disingenuous disgrace you are for leaving such a false comment. You called me yesterday (November 5th) a bundle of confused anxiety. You had already gotten for yourself the maximum discount available, I explained that to you, and told you that there was nothing more I could do, and told you the steps to take to execute on payment and have the matter resolved. I also explained to you how the registration suspension gets lifted once you commence payment. You then called me back with another question which I also answered. You then texted me with a redundant question which I again answered. You then texted a second, redundant question which told me that you were clearly in over your head to resolve this matter on your own. It was in response to that text that I explained to you that in order for me to continue to assist you that you would have to hire my office for a fee of only $750.00 so that I could answer any questions you may have, walk and assist you through the process, and ensure that you get the job done correctly. I am happy to provide free advice to persons in your situation who for one reason or another it does not make sense for them to hire me. However, my gratuitous advice has limits. Where do you get the gall to believe that i should be at your beck and call for any question that you have free of charge? You have no respect for the fact that the advice I gave you is the inventory I sell, and that I have actual, paying clients whose cases I am obligated to work on. I spent likely 10 minutes with you for free, and more importantly gave you the roadmap of how to resolve your problem yourself. The MTA and Port Authority routinely arrest people for toll evasion, the charge being theft of services. They also trespass people from roadways and sue for arrearages in tolls. This is why it's so important for people to get ahead of the problem and pay their arrearages.
