When you said grey sludge but not coolant in the oil I immediately thought there was some kind of coolant migration, (coolant leaking out somewhere but not directly in contact with an oil passage), but THERE(?), (the plugs in the heads?!), 🤷. I would have been chasing my tail more than Diesel following you around the shop. 🤪 Nice catch and thanks for the info!
That's always been my first thought, check for condensation first before checking for coolant leaks. Tis also one reason, I'm not a huge fan of diesel pickups, unless you have a long commute, they shouldn't be a daily driver. This is why many of us follow you, great information and you bring it forward. Cheers :)
Wow! Thanks for the heads up! I didn't know that would cause that type of issue! Sounds like they put them plugs in finger tight! I will start checking ever head I have done from now on! It's good that You caught it when You did! 👍
When I heard grey sludge & rocker covers I thought of coolant intrusion or condensation. Kudos to you for digging deeper to find it before more damage was done.
On the Cummins 855 we had to wear gloves when handling the heads the body oil on your hands would cause the seals even o-rings in head gasket to leak coolant. Great catch thanks. 😍🌹
Always, always, always double and triple check behind anyone else who works on your engine parts if you wish to save yourself headaches and grief as well as your engines.. Always apply a thin layer of sealant(water, gas, fuel safe type) to all plugs in blocks, heads, manifolds, etc before final assembly..
Wow,,what a pain,we had the same thing 🙄 in Chevy small blocks using Teflon sealer on the head bolts went back to formagasket #1 it hardens in the threads so the water stays in the block,,truly a natural beauty 👌 you don't need war paint
Thanks sweetie you are a big help I have that same problem with mine I appreciate you ❤much love sorry that happened to you beautiful engine I seen your whole rebuild I love your videos ❤❤❤❤

When the machine shop pressed the plugs in the head they did not use sealant on them. Two differant metals heat and cool at different rates. Thus causing weepage. The Old Wrench 🔧
Unreal. I would have immediately went to coolant as well but never thought it would have been leaking there. Do you at this point send it back to the machine shop ? Or order new frost plugs and seal it yourself ?
Hmm, never actually had this issue myself, but I have heard about it, and I’m fairly certain that the person who had it had recently had their injectors replaced.
@@thedieselqueenmelissa715 Curious now... Thread sealing tape,(Teflon tape), or the 3M thread sealant adhesive, (the white gummy stuff that never seems to dry and gets on everything)? 🤷

Yes just cause it comes back from a machine shop doesn't mean it's ready. Clean it pressure wash it dry it.. or a good chance of failure. But you know that.
Wow, didn't expect that one, sounds logical tho, if there's too much pressure, but it can't go anywhere, it starts going places where it can go. But, what do you mean with "grey sludge"? All I'm imagining at that is those fun little spraklies telling you you've got sh*t to do. When I see oil and coolant mixing, it usually gets a sort of colostrum color
I would have guessed some type of coolant leak, but on top of the head like that is weird. I would assume it was an EGR cooler leak or something similar.
None of that was in the oil. If you listen to me in the video. I specifically say the gray Sludge was ONLY found at the top of the valve cover and the Breather. I dropped the oil out of the pan, there was no contamination
A zillion thanks for sharing this - when I finally get to my 12V projects I'm watching ALL of your vids!
Good job beautiful, hoping to get a half mill out of my stock 01 24v before i have to worry about the head coming off! 426k miles now!

I was thinking blowby from a new engine. Good catch! You should replace that ac condenser, those bent fins will reduce performance/ cooling capacity.

Always use Loctite 515,516 on your Welsh/ freeze plugs. You don't want to be using chemy weld or iron tite for plugs.

The Old Wrench 🔧
These are aftermarket. They are threaded
@@thedieselqueenmelissa715 Theaded plugs require sealant also... Threaded plugs even more so!
@wesleysmith5580 yes, it was quite obvious sealant was used originally

Cool 😎
Thats why I just tap them and put pipe plugs in. Saves alot of headaches.
