HI Linus I work in a environmental lab with about 15 climatic chambers. just wanted to tell u guys that u will still need temperature isolating plastelin around the cables at the passthrouh. When u run humidity tests the water will condens at the passthrou and run down the cables. And in the worst case right into whatever testing equipment u will use outside. so always make sure that the lowest point of the cable outside is not the connection into your testing equipment. Hope u will have awesome results with your climatic chamber.

Yes, But i really want to know something about one device, Samsung Galaxy Note 9 , I got a 512GB variant as a Christmas present in December 2021, and only started using it in the summer because i already had the 128GB variant, but after just 1-2 months the camera glass was fogging up from the inside, did not pay too much attention to that, but the friday night before Christmas 2022, it broke, in the morning the note pen did not work, and the phone short circuited that night, and when i took it out of the OEM samsung protective case with the kickstand, i discovered heavy condensation marks on the back glass, IDK what it was, but i never dropped it in water, and i only used it for 6-7 months until it broke, and the Samsung Warranty does not cover it saying they di not cover any liquid damage, even if the suspected cause is a faulty seal on the phone... I need answers, to know if it was a common issue or just a 1/10000 case.
I can confirm, the temps here in Europe during the winter were about -28 indoors while being -4 outdoors.

Yeah I was confused. I mean, obviously we poor Europeans all have freezing cold living rooms, despite having central heating since the dawn of time, more than enough natural resources and, not to mention, a crapload of money to throw at the issue.
As someone who lives near the McKinley Climatic Laboratory, this is so cute, it's like a baby climate lab. But really it makes me appreciate how hard it must be for there to be a lab in Florida that can do what this does, but also fit a C-5 Galaxy inside.
The advancement of modern science keeps surprising me every day. Fitting a whole Galaxy into a tiny lab here on earth is an impressive feat! 🙃

I'm so happy that you're testing with different environments in mind. I had 3 phones fail over the span of 4 years because of the humidity and temperature in Malaysia. In all of them the charging port corroded and gave up.
I'm not sure corrosion testing specifically is possible with this setup. Corrosion doesn't happen overnight (well, in some cases it can, but probably not in your usecase), and I doubt they're going to (read: can afford to) leave this running for 3 years to test corrosion on a specific phone model :/
@@pixelmaster98 I believe there are accelerated corrosion test with salt water and or chemicals you can run to simulate years of weather exposure in days

That's a tricky test because it is the combination of wear (plugging/unplugging) with the humidity that causes it
In that case, i buy silicon plug for aux and usb, and use wireless charging
I love how much enthusiasm there is from the equipment makers that they even went to the extra trouble to make it filming friendly! Like they didn't _have_ to do that, but they knew it was the right thing to do for the sake of consumers and the world ❤

Many of this manufacturer's devices have windows on the doors, it's part of their offering.
I highly doubt this was a special one off for Linus. Very likely this is a standard offering you just have to pay more for.

Yeah kinda cool seeing this in a mainstream video, although you can see they took an extra step further here. When I toured Plexus and Mercer before… their machines didn't have quite the cable management as this machine haha.

@@HavocHybridVids I'd be willing to bet money someone on the team is an LTT fan and knew Linus would crack it open, so they made sure it was neatly cable managed.
I'm an engineer and we have burn in chambers that go from -55C to 125C, and it's really cool to see the overlap between work and hobbies!
We also use them, but the range is from -85C to 185C. I once cooled it down to -70 and open side port. Can't describe how cold that is.
@@First2ner we use them too. Tried to accelerate the unfreezing by opening the door once. This is how I learned the product really doesn't like water.
@@billigerfusel Accelerated temp changes doesn't sound great anyways.
Make sure to get some reference grade temperature/humidity probes to record the temperatures during the tests. The built in readings are always sub-par for really accurate measurements as the measurement location is not near the test subject. With good probes, you can also measure temperatures well inside and outside a computer case for example.
I love hearing them talk about what I work on, environmental testing is so niche but good to see someone keeping manufacturers straight especially since I work for one
Niche isn't quite correct- environmental testing has huge industrial and military standards that go into many products (i.e. waterproofing values)
I didn't fully understand why Linus was building the lab until now, no other reviewers are doing it only manufacturers do it and they don't share the results, this is going to be super valuable for when I'm searching for a new product. Neat!
gamers nexus is trying to do comparable testing like this with their big fancy new fan tester, but they unfortunately lack the budget that linus has.
It's going to be awesome to look at objective headphone tests rather than subjective opinions of audiophiles that are personalising electronic devices. They're saying "This headphone colors music in this way" to shitty sounding headphones.
I'm just waiting for the inevitable LTT approved certification to hit products, that will hopefully have companies lining up to get their products certified, nice little cash generator

@@ugur3527 Rtings is pretty good for headphones/speakers, displays and cameras already. They have expanded into a couple other categories too, like vacuums, printers and keyboards, but I haven't taken a look at those. LTT Labs will definitely help with corroborating their reviews though, as well as providing reviews for products they don't cover which is fantastic.

Yes, they're hand built from raw metal sheets to finished product.
No, it's not COMMON for our units to have glass, but this unit usually does because of how large it is. Smaller units usually do not have glass, we also make one entirely out of glass, which is wild.
The cable management is actually kind of us cheating, we're sent wire harnesses, so a lot of those larger cable runs that are nice and neat and zip tied are actually from the factory that makes the cables, we just cut zip ties as needed to fit the runs.
Edit: the plugs are silicone rubber, only info I could find :(

Props to ya'll for such a well built machine! We have several environmental chambers where I work but they're dinosaurs compared to this one. The wireless logging feature seems really handy.

The use of this device for testing is based objectively but I honestly need one of these as the most overkill beer fridge of all time.

LTT making content out of equipment is a smart move, they can profit from from making a video of a equipment to help mitigate the cost, at the same time they inform audience of their tools to show the integrity of their lab..
As an industrial controls engineer it's cool to see stuff like this. @12:31 there's a Click PLC (the white box at the center)! I used one in my senior design project at school many years ago.

It's really cool how the manufacturer went to those lengths to make this something that can be filmed or otherwise work well with LTT's specific needs. That's definitely a benefit to higher end scientific equipment that is hand built in low volume. I don't even want to think about the price though.

@@HeyLook287 Might want to make sure you are allowed to share that, unless you want to be fired - I know a lot of manufacturers of expensive custom gear can be very cagey about their prices. Even more so if they give someone a better than usual deal because they don't want someone else to demand the same discount.
It's nice that Linus can milk the lab and still manage to present it in an enjoyable way. Not just a boring hey this is my new gadget.

At this point it's still good content, it's a product I don't think I ever would have seen a video about, but it's still interesting. I'd much rather watch this new novel video, than a video about yet another new flagship android phone (or something like that).
Well, it is fascinating bits of information. Even if someone would claim he is flexing his wealth. Yet, really, he isn't. He is investing in a project that may not pay for itself for a while. So the filming part of the company has to pull extra duty. So yeah. He has to film about it and talk about the future. All to make money to put into the project and pay the film staff. On top of selling more water bottles. Also, hopefully, it will be a future LTT stress ball.
@@Qardo Yeah, they are a company that makes videos so it makes sense for them to make videos about as much as they can to try and recover the costs. It is also very interesting information about how testing works in the industry. Most viewers are technical enough to be interested by this.
@@Qardo It also helps explain *why* the Lab matters and why their results will be even better in the future. All these videos going through the equipment can then also be referenced in the future if someone wonders what equipment they used.
It all adds up.
LTT's ability to make money/pay for at least SOME of the cost of their equipment/Linus's new home through doing a video ON it... it's an inspiring level of entrepreneurship. I'm always amazed, and I always wonder what percent of the upgrades/work gets paid back from these segments (or maybe even profit!). Keep doing the game, you do it well!

When testing PSU efficiency, as long as you keep the resistance in your custom cables the same as stock you should get the same results as the stock cables. I would suggest making custom extension cables using heavy gauge wire that is nickel or silver tinned. Your engineers will need to do the math to find the best size wire that keeps resistance down while not introducing too much capacitance.
On top of this, you can estimate the loss in the extensions by testing with and without them using the same power supply at the same temp and humidity. Maybe even vary the power supply to isolate the loss in the extensions. Regardless, you can then back correct the power loss in the extensions for future tests to evaluate manufacturer claims. The raw data will still give you valid comparison pointers across different PSUs as well
Capacitance only matters for instantaneous power draw changes for the DC output, unlike A/C
@@hkscfreak Yes that is true, but I mentioned it because someone somewhere would complain about methodology if it isn't taken into account. At the lengths needed it wouldn't be a factor at all especially on a constant DC load as you said. But it is something for them to consider if they're trying to get the most accurate results that people won't argue with. then again people argue about everything anyway.
I feel like for edge cases it could be as simple as adding longer cables, testing card in PSU out, testing card and PSU in, testing card and PSU in with stock cables and doing some maths that even internet trolls couldn’t fight with
@@D4rk51d332 Hmm, if anything inductance would be more of an issue for instantaneous changes in current or power draw. Extra capacitance is generally beneficial for constant voltage DC supplies rather than a problem. Though capacitive loads can theoretically send some power supplies into oscillations if they are badly designed, which is actually probably a good thing to detect.

I recently got to work on a Phenix+ instrument at PerkinElmer and I've gotta say that the assembly processes behind these kind of expensive scientific devices are fascinating.
Content like this makes everyone in the industry smarter. Just knowing that equipment exists and a quick over view of its capabilities is a huge step forward. It’s similar to what Banks Performance has been doing recently with its data mythbusting series on cars. Going over dyno equipment, chart correction factors, and all the things that one manufacturer might not be controlling in their testing.

I don't know if you guys have it planned already or not but how certain devices react to changes in pressure would be nice. Galaxy phones have an issue with their speakers after being exposed to Pressure changes usually flights but large temperature swings can do it too. It's related to the water proofing and a common fix is to open the sim tray to relieve the pressure. Personally I would have liked to know this before purchasing my phone so I think there's value in the test.
The Labs content is some of my favourite LTT content at the moment. I’m looking forward to more!

I used to work on those Watlow PLCs on env chambers. Yes, the large scientific equipment market is all low enough volume that everything is handmade, and the plus side of that is that it enables customization.

Awesome update. I've got an environmental chamber, chroma psu, and scopes for testing products (pumps) at work but it's nice to see how excited they get about using the same stuff.
It's a lot of work automating all that to automate it all and maintain, but it will be cool to see the results.
It is so, so awesome seeing all this stuff come together. And it's really great to hear that the people who make equipment like this are on board. I imagine most of this kind of stuff is used to figure out what the minimum viable construction for a throwaway consumer product can be. It must be pretty thrilling to have something you built with such rigor and care actually be used for scientific and informative purposes.
I wonder if there are grants you could apply for to help pay for it. Also, there are probably a lot of small businesses who would _love_ to test their prototypes using setups this baller and might rent it out during its downtime. Schools and apprenticeship programs, too. You might even be able to act as an independent third-party evaluator in right-to-repair cases.
And, I assume, there are many ways you can use scientific equipment for random fun, informative videos. What happens to a water-cooled system as the temperature drops below freezing? How do you protect a device from humidity and wild swings in temperature? Does the temperature of a device affect how much damage it takes when -Linus- a hypothetical individual of no particular name drops it? If we could capture the waste heat from computers, how much energy could we get back from it? How do environmental conditions affect image quality with different display technologies? Or the characteristics of sound from speakers? Would it actually be feasible to build data centers in the ocean or in orbit for cooling? If you built a completely wooden PC case and it expanded or shrank as the humidity changed, what would happen? I HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS.

Not only that, but it gives us information about what type of information we can expect in the future, and how that information is collected.
Transparency is very important in product testing.
I worked with a chamber like this long ago, mostly working on the data collection and control part. To give an idea when this was, the data connectivity was with an IEEE-488 cable to a VAX-11/750 and I used RS/1 to write the software for data analysis.
IEEE-488… haven't heard/read that name in a *loong* time (my only exposure to this was Commodore machines though).
@ Yeah, the IEEE-488 has developed by HP, it was originally called HPIB for HP Instrument Bus. Apparently Commodore used a bus based on the IEEE-488, but kind stripped down to the basic protocol. That's a pretty shrewd move on their part instead of re-inventing the wheel. Interestingly Atari had a serial bus that was actually similar to what ended up being USB, some of the same people worked on the development of both (!). Funny that a Raspberry Pi and a USB cable could more than handle what I had to do with a HPIB and a VAX!

I used to work for a company that did this sort of testing for the automotive industry.
They had an environmental chamber like this big enough for semi trailer truck.
It's temp range was something like -40c to +80c.

our desiccant driers usually have two desiccant chambers. when one is used up, the other kicks in and also dries the first chamber of desiccant. We never have to replace it.
I can confirm that, as an European, we live everywhere with -28 degrees in winter every day and we eat ice creams because our pizzas will get cold very soon.
You can do whats called a 4-wire test at the PSU connector, so you can measure efficiency by measuring the voltage at the PSU's connector.

I worked for a while in environmental test, and let me tell ya, it was a blast. This video made me kinda miss that job. Now I'm in failure analysis, which is also very very fun.
I love the emphasis on the power, cause in Ireland that machine is equivalent to two hot water kettles. Which is basically what my kettle and espresso machine draw in the morning when they both run. North America really needs to get with the higher voltages. Saves on energy waste and copper too.

What makes you think we do not have higher voltages? We have 220v coming into the houses - we just split that into 2 110 volt legs to most of our appliances. Our electric Stoves / Dryers and anything else that needs it can get 220v. It is our building codes that do not allow 220v at a standard wall outlet.
@@tisjester Well, and we have 400V coming into our houses via 3 phases - each of those phases has 230V to neutral and supports (depending on the specific region and building) at the very least 21A and up to 50A (depends on the heating system, the local electricity supplier and other factors). That's ~14.5kW - 34.5kW per family home. As far as I can see the US compensates for the lower voltage by designing everything for higher currents - which tends to be less efficient and potentially more dangerous in case of a shock.
P.S.: stoves are usually designed to make use of up to 3 phases so up to 400V

I remember when living in Broome, where Wet Season could reach high 90s of humidity, my Samsung S8 USB-C port would always say there's water in the port when I tried to plug in the port. I had to get a wireless charger as it wouldn't charge and bluetooth files. The same thing happened with my sisters lightning port, but no one had this problem with Micro-USB
I used to test alarm systems to BS standard. One test was an environmental chamber. the one thing I really noticed was how PSUs behave in them, the sign wave behaviour was eye opening

In the middle of summer I definitely want to see a short of Linus using his environmental chamber as a way to escape the heat.
In terms of maintenance of medium to high end scientific equipment, you gotta contact the supplier/manufacturer because often (not always) they’ll offer a usually annual service to do things like refill the nitrogen or replace the dessicant.
If not, it’s not all too difficult to store nitrogen tanks or even CO2 tanks. You just have to learn how to hook up the regulators and hoses. And in the case of liquid CO2 the condensing chamber to get your solid ice (because it’ll immediately evaporate and come out as gas otherwise)

I’m an engineer in pharmaceutical industry and I’ve bene validating and testing climatic chambers for years. This is an absolute beauty! I really like the design of the electrical panel and the overall modularity! The only thing that gives me some doubts is the asimmetry of the actual chamber!
IM genuinely excited about this testing lab. Im hoping it's going to be like consumer report but with far more information and less bias.

Too many people ask me why their PC conks out, and 99% it overheated. Looking forward to whatever results you guys come out with this machine!

I remember swapping a customer's ruggedised Ericsson phone for early faults about 6 times. Finally I went on-site to observe. The phones were being taken in and out of a cold room causing moisture to quickly form when returning to the kitchen.

After passing the psu cabing out of the chamber, your extender cables could be water cooled to ensure a constant resistance so the extra power losses in the extensions can be accounted for in the efficiency calculations. They use water cooled cabling pretty often in welding equipment… maybe a source of parts to build these for yourself.
I think they can simply measure the impedance of extension cables and factor that in the calculations.
@@Canilash impedance changes with temperature and the temperature of these cables would vary based on the load and and ambient temperature.
We have 12 environmental/thermal shock chambers. One large enough to fit two motorcycles. Be sure keep up with maintenance and cal those thermocouples. Cant wait to see the finished lab!! cheers

Hmm, maybe that room temperature graph is more accurate than I thought. That last bit about being comfortable at 25° in there really showed we like it cooler in our rooms over in the UK.
Hey Linus and LTT - Really hoping that you might also consider testing headphones in this - A big issue that is rarely covered in reviews of headphones is how hot they get - could be very interesting to see levels for it - which also adds option for testing with potential accessories, such as those that comes with a cooling pad. Gotta keep the human computer cooled as well ;)
I am overall really looking forward to see the lap in operation (perhaps also testing some AMD 3D stuff)
I do wonder if earbuds and headphones being exposed to near-freezing or below-freezing temperature kills them significantly faster. It would explain how many pairs I go through

You can still do efficiency measurement even with cable extension for input and output. The Chroma programmable load has remote voltage measurement feature. And the programmable source/power analyzer also have remote voltage measurement

the first thing i thought of is that they desiccate, without actually using desiccant, is to use a vacuum pump with water traps.
I used to work with equipment like that and they always use a vacuum pump to get the air out and go through a water trap, which either needs to be drained regularly or is connected to a pipe which you can then use it as a more permanent way of draining the water when it builds up. The "waterless" air is then pumped back into the system.
This is so f*cking cool! Also think of the amount of people this will help!
