The overhead shot at 2:53 was INCREDIBLY important in the development of Tap. When they were on the floor, oil from the smoke machine kept dripping on them; so as that problem was worked out by the crew, the actors started improvising in character. It was at this moment that the idea for the movie came to be.

This is the rock n roll creation. The terrible big bang. An absolute sensation. Yin was searching for his yang. And I looked and I saw that it was good. Tap fucking rules. Period.

Actually, that IS Eric "Stumpy Joe" Childs, played by Russ Kunkel (as in the movie). Just wearing a ridiculous wig. (The mystery keyboardist, by the way, is comedic musician Loudon Wainwright III.)

This was the first appearance of Spinal Tap, on a Rob Reiner late-night sketch show called The TV Show, aired in 1978. I can't remember why, but I *really* wanted to see this show, but it was on too late, so my dad taped it for me. And when I say "taped" I mean AUDIO taped. On a portable cassette recorder. It was 1978, after all. I listened to this tape a million times, and memorized all of the skits. I keep telling people about this show, but nobody except me seems to remember it, and it's still not available in any form, as far as I know.

Even though this aired in the late 70's, the song itself sounds more late 60's/early 70's to me. I guess it's possible that, in-story, this performance was years earlier, or they were simply performing one of their older songs.

    • @cultfilmfreakreviews

they didn't yet get into the whole Heavy Metal parody because what they ended up parodying in the movie hadn't really started or hadn't been normal yet, like Maiden, Van Halen (who started the year before), and that kind of stuff, so here they were more doing a parody on that early 1970's album rock stuff

the Rock N Roll Creation album (per se) was all songs religious, and this one isn't, so to me it sounds more like Shark Sandwich, which I always thought looked like one of those latter 1970's albums because it HAD TO be after JAWS made sharks famous, so I think the Shark Sandwich album was like 1976, one of those albums that would have the "Bargain Price" stickers on the top left and would indeed be in bins

@@Kartissa Shark Sandwich came out April 1st 1980. Its first single was Sex Farm.

I remember watching this with my dad. I thought Spinal Tap was awesome, the Wild People Kingdom skit was hilarious, and the Beef Hoof Sticks commercial was gold. I think there was also a skit about two septic tank pumpers who wanted to get a credit card so that they could call a phone sex line, but I might be mistaken.

      lol "fake band".
Listen to a profound song like "Break Like the Wind" and tell me that's fake.
Like their classic "Stonehenge", this band is the rock of ages - two visionaries creating timeless classics.
They would never even be mentioned alongside Tennyson or Wordsworth or Shakespeare. They are a class apart from those guys.
Think of the nicest word ever - and it could still never apply to this band.
