God Bless Harry Shearer (Derek Smalls), Christopher Guest (Nigel Tufnell) and Michael McKean (David St.Hubbins)....Very funny guys and pretty good musicians.
He wears a mean wig too.....Those were just yer archetypal grandiose comedy rock riffs and solos he plays.....I couldn't do them...but that's not the point....I'm also unable to do a good Adolf Hitler.....but if you go for such things, that's your prerogative....
I know Spinal Tap is supposed to just be a comedy act which is why they come up with crazy song titles and lyrics, but I think that had these guys made a serious go at it, they could have been a pretty big band. Maybe not the next Zeppelin but the rhythm's and the phrasings and the actual musicianship is just as good as any other rock band. You have to also consider that when they hit that stage, those actors are portraying characters, so not only are they playing their instruments and singing their songs, they are also "staying in character". That movie they did, "This is Spinal Tap" is proof that they could have been a legitimate band because there were actual rock stars that thought they were indeed a real band but just playing a comedy movie. Paul Stanley of KISS was one who thought they were a real band and his girlfriend at the time was an actress, she is now married to Dan Akroy, she actually broke up with Paul to be with Dan and is still married to him and her and Dan are good friends with Paul and his wife. But yeah Paul said that the two of them saw the movie and thought it was great and when he got back around the other guys in KISS he was talking about Spinal Tap and asked if any of the other guys knew anything about them. Ace Frehley says he just started laughing at this and he told Paul what was really going with that movie and the band, Paul seemed devastated lol.
This is even funnier when you remember Gene Simmons stole the line "the bigger the cushion the sweeter the pushin'," and testified in court he had never heard of Spinal Tap.
That's the thing. They were theortically taking the piss out of the genre, but if you listen to the albums they've out, certainly the movie soundtrack and Break Like The Wind, they're actually really good records, just as conventional hard rock music. That was the thing that impressed me, instead of doing "comedy music" (like Frank Zappa and others often did), they played it with a straight face, and I think it worked. And you're right, if they had wanted it, they could have a career as a hard rock band.
We are drawn to Spinal Tap by the excellence of their music and the brilliance of their comedy. Most of the contemporary music on my car radio sounds like rubbish compared to Tap, and I suspect that I'd listen to them in preference to others based solely on musical excellence, even in the absence the comedy aspect.
The elves are dressed in leather And the angels are in chains (Christmas with the Devil) The sugar plums are rancid And the stockings are in flames (Christmas with the Devil) There's a demon in my belly And a gremlin in my brain There's someone up the chimney hole And Satan is his name The rats ate all the presents And the reindeer ran away (Christmas with the Devil) There'll be no Father Christmas 'Cause it's Evil's holiday (Christmas with the Devil) No bells in Hell No snow below Silent night, violent night So come all ye unfaithful Don't be left out in the cold You don't need no invitation, no Your ticket is your soul
yeah, but aren't they really play, i watched them on Freddie Mercury tribute, it was a real play and david sing. how come they got so many concerts but they don't really play?! :P
"Lambs+Blood" are the band that turned me Christian. "Not in Thy Name" is my favourite album of all time. Apart from the title track..; "God of Love", "Ready for the Rapture" and "Evolution Delusion" are my personal favourites. Smalls is outstanding - no other bass player could do "Evolution Delusion", due to its free jazz bass solo about 7 minutes in. It's like Coltrane's "A Love Supreme" - but done on the bass. His vocals on "Ready for the Rapture" are awesome. "Are you READY??! [READY!!] READY??!! [READY!!] READY???! [READY!!!] ... .... For the Rapture?!!" Enough said - I can't get the title track out of my head now: "Not in thy name! [KRRRAAAANNG!] I'll send you to hell. Not in thy name! [KRAAAAANNG!] Your children as well. Not in thy name! [KWAAAAAALLL!] You're burning in Sin! Forever and ever, Amen, [SQUEEALLL!] You chose not to win! And not in THY NAME! Not in thy name." Smalls effortlessly conveys the Christian message - he's found his calling.
Thank you for uploading this - especially with the original magnificent stereo soundtrack. Viewers can appreciate that how huge this show would have been to witness in person. The full length "The Return Of Spinal Tap" film is excellent - but the only commercial release which has the original stereo audio is the LaserDisc. It's a pity this film was never given a fully authorised remastered stereo transfer to DVD or Blu-ray.
When I saw Status Quo , I realized , visually , you take Quo , add Jeff Beck , YOU GOT THE TAP ! But , I still prefer Bad News , and "Cashing in On Christmas".
Look at the tail on one of the band members. This is one group formed as humor and to make a few movies, and concerts. Another one of their many songs is Big Bottom.
Has anyone seen and know where i can find Spinal Tap performing Christmas with the devil on saturday night live in June or July of 85'? They pulled off a killer stage for a mid-summer x-mas.
Spinal Tap is the joke with the mostly visible punchline...what blends kayfabe and shoot is that they have riffs that other bands would kill for and lyrics that crack you up
The Albert Hall seemed destined to one day have the legendary Spinal Tap grace it. That organ is one of its most famous features - finally put to good use for once.
@shelbyloveforever They're 12 year-olds who probably have no idea there's a movie called Spinal Tap and that it owns them and their mothers so hard. Ignorance is not bliss. Anywho, MERRY CHRISTMAS!
When I think about Spinal Tap I imagine what would happen if Jeff Beck got together with Micheal Schencker of UFO and Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath and formed a band with a keyboard player and a drummer.

That guitar solo by "Nigel" - was actually awesome! Just as good as anything I've heard from "real" rock musicians!
Agreed. These guys have legitimate ability. I saw their "Break Like The Wind" tour- quite a solid show, even without goofy stuff going on.
They play their own instruments
yeah, they say rock is dead, but it simply morphed into comedy.
Spinal Tap deserves the ROCK N ROLL HALL of FAME
If they played songs like this in the stores, I might not get tired of the holidays by Thanksgiving!
The only thing that would have made this better is if the drummer had burst into flames at the end.
Bizarre Christmas accident
We drummers are already hot enough!
Yes! And then the Camera Zooms in on a small Green Globule on the drum throne
Being the drummer of Spinal Tap was akin to being a Red-Shirt on Star Trek or the defense against the dark arts professor at Hogwarts
God Bless Harry Shearer (Derek Smalls), Christopher Guest (Nigel Tufnell) and Michael McKean (David St.Hubbins)....Very funny guys and pretty good musicians.
Nigel Tufnell - it might be his job to be confused, but he's still a heck of a guitarist!
He wears a mean wig too.....Those were just yer archetypal grandiose comedy rock riffs and solos he plays.....I couldn't do them...but that's not the point....I'm also unable to do a good Adolf Hitler.....but if you go for such things, that's your prerogative....

The Greatest Rock and Roll band in the World!!!
And the loudest!
They started out as a parody band but to me they became just as legit as any other band their REAL music is Great!!
Brilliant rock band!

That video and music makes me think that the people who we defined as metal gods until today were actually frauds.
better than anything on classic rock radio...hear that KSHE??
just like tenacious d.. actually now it's occurred to me that these guys are like the OG tenacious d.
Derek Smalls; a True legend; a Moose preserved in luke warm water
His solo album "Smalls Change" of easy-listening classics is exactly that
These visionaries predicted Xmas in 2020.
Amazing, and moving.
Excellent.
one of Nigel's shreddingest solos!!!
The elves are dressed in leather

Thanks bud
I saw Tap at the Beacon during their Break With the Wind Tour...just an insane concert. It put Pink Floyd at the Meadowlands to shame.
Hey it's Lenny from Laverne and Shirley, The Six-Fingered Man, and half the characters from The Simpsons.
"Your ticket is your soul."
If Kiss sang this, like this...
The Motherfuckin' place would literally catch fire and fall to the center of the Earth.
This is a classic! 15 people don't understand irony, satire or comedy in general.
a friend of mine refused to watch Spinal Tap once because he thought it was a real documentary about heavy metal.
yeah, but aren't they really play, i watched them on Freddie Mercury tribute, it was a real play and david sing. how come they got so many concerts but they don't really play?! :P
Because they are funny to rock stars, for making fun of rock stars. Rock stars love them.
They're actors/comedians sure, but they're also musicians, so yes, they really are playing/singing, but it's still a parody.
The keyboard player & drummer were insanely good on this especially the drummer, his sound was monstrous 🏆
The late Ric Parnell on drums and CJ Vanston on Keys where full times musicians.Ric was the same drummer from the movie.
Relax, Derek Smalls also played at the Monsters of Jesus festival with his Christian band Lambsblood. :D
"Lambs+Blood" are the band that turned me Christian.

OK, but why istheir Christmas song their absolute heaviest jam?
✨🤘👺⚡️✨
The elves are dressed in leather, the angels are in chains! Silent night, violent night!
This song really does have a great riff
Totally nicked from Whitesnake's version of "Ain't No Love", but it's Satan's holiday so all bets are off
@@ChrisCatton which it turn was nicked off the Beatles 'Spunk together' (right now, over me)

Funny that the blond guy is Chuck from Better Call Saul.
Upon the shows completion, the drummer disappeared forever. RIP.
I hope he didn't choke on his own vomit

The ONLY Christmas song for me. Thanks Tap!!!
epic rap verse!

My Christmas is now complete!! What a song!!
Awesome vid!!! Thanx for posting!! They need to play this in the mall. Might make the holiday season suck a lot less!
Keep the Faith, my Brothers of the Tap!!
Baron Christopher Nigel Tufnel Curtis Haden-Guest. Knowing that makes this so much better.
Satan is NEVER in the darkness he hides in the light....
Is that midget the guy that played Mickey on Seinfeld? It's go time!
I thought the same thing. Looks like him.
Yes, it's Mickey Abbot
Got this on continuous repeat today.
I was the drummer who spontaneously combusted on stage.
Has anyone seen and know where i can find Spinal Tap performing Christmas with the devil on saturday night live in June or July of 85'? They pulled off a killer stage for a mid-summer x-mas.
It used to be on TH-cam - I remember it well with the sleigh and snow. They also did Big Bottom on the show.
When I think of the best guitar solos ever this one comes to mind.
I saw ST at the Greek Theatre.
< <
Same same
lol at the number of picks on Nigel's mic stand!
=D

I feel and see them growing, as time goes by, long live Spinal Tap....
My favorite xmas tune.
God. Their props kill me every time!
That's a fuckin' jammin' song!
Merry Christmas 2021!
I saw them live when they were The New Originals....but my ticket stub says The Originals....My Sister threw up in the drummers mouth.
The Best Band!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanx for warning us, members of Spinal Tarp....@~
Harry, Christopher and Michael are great musicians
Apparently, there’s only a dislike button for this video! 🤣 this is the best Christmas song ever! 🤘
The ultimate Christmas song! :>)
Thank God it's not Christmas is my annual refrain...
Holy shit! I was like number 666 on Christmas With The Devil!! Epic! (It's the little things that make me happy folks!)
And I just realized my comment was number 69...I need to play the lottery! Lol!!
nice
Hail Santa🤘
Mr. Burns playing the bass
onetworockandroll or is it Mr Smithers!!!
Both. Plus Principal Skinner and Otto.
Well, not since about 2015 or so.
Devil pants!!! hahaha
Is that a new drummer 😂😂😂
An EPIC!...Christmas song!!!
Ilove Spinal Tap!!!!
Stonehenge another awesome song
I still miss the drumming of Joe Mamma Besser.
Ned Flanders on bass 😂
I always think of him more as Otto the bus driver.
When I first heard this I thought he was singing "No-el's in HELL!" which me made me burst out laughing walking down the street
12 people don't recognize great satire when they see it.
When I first caught a clip of This Is Spinal Tap on TV, years ago, I thought it was a real band. And you're right, it's more parody.
Never mind parody, this is just great metal.
No bells in hell
No snow below
No bells in Hell. No snow below...
Best band ever. Beotch school, beeg bottoms.... Perfection.
The sugarplums are rancid and the stockings are in flames!!! The rats ate all the presents and the reindeer ran away!!
Sounds like Xmas in 2020 alright
I love this song though. Hahahahaha!
Long live the TAP!
