🌍 Hello World! My name is Ihor.
This is my channel where I share my experiences, ideas, reviews and tutorials related to Electronic Music Production. I focus mostly on Techno and House music. In my Studio on my Music Production Desk you will find a variety of different gear like: digital and analog synth, eurorack modular, drum machine, sampler, effect, mixer, guitar pedal, MIDI controller. Also software: DAW, Ableton, VST, plugins.
I am myself an engineer and I am quite obsessed with the Music Technology and Sound Design. I like making music without a computer. I like playing Electronic Music Live with my Minimal Dawless Setup. I love Eurorack Modular Techno and always keen to talk about the modular workflow.

@@IhorMedia I have a similar sized case (104hp and 6u) and it has a similar amount of voices. It’s much more expensive and bigger and heavier than a Novation Circuit. But it’s so much fun to jam and it’s a custom made instrument. So can totally understand why you wanted to have a bigger case to make this Groovebox.

So timely! I just ordered my first semimodulars (Minibrute 2 and Moog Mavis) with the Rackbrute 6U. I've been spending my last couple days researching other modules and then this pops up. I guess I'll just stay poor then. 😂😂

Hello Ihor my friend, very interesting choice of Module in this case, not what I thought you might pick, no MD must be first time u not used and no Steppy, quite shocked but not disappointed, think Dfam bit large for its part in patch but u probably use more in other patches

It sounds indeed great. There is not that many modulation opportunities though. Check the user manual to align on your expectations 😉

Nice, my main case is a Rackbrute 6u, and it's more about three voices for ambient (Generate3, CloudTerrarium, and Rings; with Twin Waves for FM). I'm putting together a similar system to yours as a modern acid house expander. Basimilus for drum synth, SSF Entity UK for BD, Fracture for Clap. Piques for 808+snare, ADDAC T-network for toms. Similar to yours, Versio for effects, and Legio for Virt, but to use as Tymps too. Erica for Bassline synth too, but a DB-01. Also Manis, for tearing leads. Then Generate3 can do monosynth bass/analog FM, Twin Waves supersaw into Ripples or digi-FM; and Terrarium on evolving timbres/FX. I haven't decided on a module for hats yet ... leaning toward Patching Panda Hatz, Tip Top or maybe even Befaco Noise Plethora ... 606 or 808 are my favourite flavours of hat.

@@IhorMedia If I use a sampler, my hats will sound sample. Not fat, warm and round, like hats should sound ;) But yes, for now, MPC One on drum duty (Acidlab Drumatix sampleset). And ABL3 VST for the wiggly worm basslines. I'm getting the Basimilus this week, and will use it to fill the MPC One with samples, but and then just drive one live sound from the module, using the MPC CV/Gate outputs.

Hey, great stuff here, i'm a newbie in modular synth, if one didnt want to use the DFAM, what modules could be cool for this setup? i was thinking of maybe Plaits, but what do you recommend to use in that space, maybe some FX processor? would gladly appreciate your help
What did I learn: Ride your Metropolix hard and you need an Maestro for rhythm-based Eurorack stuff
I think it's interesting how you purposely divided your setup into sections, I did something similar but on a larger scale. Every section has its own smaller case so I can only bring with me what I need for any given show. There's a main section in 84hp that contains everything I need for a full voice (2 oscillators, VCAs, lots of modulation, a filter, a sequencer, and a clock divider). Then I've got several smaller purpose built cases that do their own unique thing. I've got a drum case with a sampler, a 909 kick, and hi-hats. Then I've got a drone case with a heavy reverb and a Mutable Warps. Then there's a "glitch case" with a few modules that screw up and scramble the sound like Morphagene and 2hp freez. And then finally there's a case for ambient generative music that contains the ZOIA and the 4ms SWN. It's not the most efficient setup but it works for my needs perfectly.

Watching it again... The Legio's are both end of chain in series and after that the Versio? There is no 'external in' of the Legio involved where it processes the kick and ducks the stereo in? It 'listens' for the kick in the sound itself?
You are correct. There are 2 Legios and 2 Versios here. It is pretty much like this: Versio -> Legio -> Legio -> Versio. When it comes to a kick drum and ducking - it is all Tymp Legio. It is a drum module with an ability to duck the incoming stereo audio and mix the kick drum on top of that. Another Legio in the chain is Librae that saturates and compresses the audio.

Why not using Maestro built in attenuation ? You can attenuate each channel by pressing HIGH + MUTE and selecting the channel and the attenuation level with 1/2, 1/4, etc.
Thanks! Yeah, there is an internal attenuation menu in Maestro. However I wanted to have a bit more precise control at that time.

Ihor, I think perhaps TH-cam censored my comment for containing a link. But you might look into the Expert Sleepers Disting function called "counter". There's a video by Os in which he demonstrates how it can solve a sync issue with the DFAM.

What features determined the choice of Manis?
Manis is a full voice. It needs nothing really, apart from triggers going into it. It has a nasty sound, built in VCA, LP filter, envelope, distortion, etc. No brainer for me to have it in the rack.
sounds like you could use a reset for DFAM ;) cool video as always! I also just got the 7u performance rack!

I sold my DFAM on Sunday. I really wanted to like it but it just had too many little annoying traits that annoyed me. Annoying lack of reset and annoying lack of CV control of certain elements.
DFAM is weird. I kind of like it, but it is very limited at times.

@@IhorMedia What I like to do in a setup like this, is sending an LFO to the VCA decay of the DFAM, so that the single „Hihat“ hits would vary slightly in length. That makes the sound a bit more organic, at least to my ears…
@@kaykramer9045 yeah! That is a good trick! Especially with an attenuator in between. Modulating noise level slightly will add some dynamics I think. Many many opportunities!

Dot is good! Congrats on the Syntakt! My bigger modular case has changed many times since then 😊 but DFAM is still there and I am still cheating! Though I’d say that DFAM is cheating by itself! But if you combine it with some modulation sources… instant grooves!
