American Fender Telecaster Nut Failed

- I recently received this american Fender Telecaster for a setup. It had issues with nut adjusting before, and now it turned out that it was also stripped. Therefore, I recommended to replace it.
In general, this is a simple process, but it requires some experience and time. To begin with, you need to unscrew the nut completely, and continue to unscrew it so that it begins to press on the walnut plug insert. In this case I was relatively lucky as I had a fresh wrench (slightly larger than the original 1/8 inch) with which I was able to start moving the nut. As a temporary solution, of course, I can adjust it like this and leave it as it is, until the next time. But it's not very cool and I don't like to leave surprises for the next person who will do the setup, besides the sound with which it was unscrewed did not promise anything good. After this step, you just need to heat the insert (very convenient with a soldering iron) and unscrew the nut little by little. The heat will soften the glue and the pressure from the nut will push out the wooden insert. I had a relatively bad case, because usually it is pushed out completely and dismantling is quite easy. But mine just split and only the upper half began to push out. Anyway, it's okay, thanks to the heated glue, I was able to adequately separate the remains of the wood. A bit cleaning inside of the hole, after which you can already put a new nut. Here you can see my genuine surprise because it's the first time I see such fault :) But I heard about that, so I almost always have a supply of such spare parts, so I just take out a new one, lubricate and put it in place. After the nut comes a washer and then goes a walnut insert that I glue with Titebond.
The next day you can already cut off the remains of the wood, I like to begin with chisels. For finishing steps I use sandpaper (400 grit) and a small fine scraper. I use superglue to restore the varnish, sand it flat and polish it with my "portable" buffer.

Взагалі - небагато 🙃
Але вологість (точніше її відсутність) та непросушене дерево часто роблять погано навіть повністю лакованим грифам, і іноді навіть так що нічого з тим вже неможна зробити (не рахуючи пряме втручання всередину грифа).
Я не думаю що ціль біфлексів була у тому щоб передбачити що комусь колись буде потрібен такий діапазон. Всередині самого грифа, десь в районі сьомої точки, є втулочка у котрій сидить сам анкер, але вона там потрібна просто для більшої стабільності і для того щоб тиск не видавлював горіхову вставку позаду грифа. Можливо хтось крутив туди-сюди той анкер і помітив що він умовно двосторонній. От він таким і став 😁
@@TadykaGuitars я не зустрічав таких гітар. Але біфлекс гєморний, я втулку дремелем вирізаю, а коли вона вже геть тоненька, тоді виколюю

@@TadykaGuitars кожен по своєму робить - головне якісний результат. Доводилось робити навіть без заміни гайки, перебивати її під більший шестигранник не виймаючи, бо дорого для клієнта заміна)

А на рахунок ціни - це дуже цікава тема. Як на мене - все ж, якщо це адекватний і нормальний інструмент, економія може іноді боком вилізти. Вже було таке, приносили після таких ремонтів і не завжди був сенс реанімувати далі 🙃

I noticed, the flat washer came out, from on top of the nut
(between nut and plug), instead of from under it. Was there,
also, a washer Under the nut and why would there be a washer
on Top, of the nut???? 😁✌🖖
To create space ' keep from gluing the plug against the nut.
Anyone know where to get the really long screwdriver with the changeable hex bits?

Hi. Did you use any polishing compound on your buff?
Of course!
In my case - Dialux white (cheap but small blocks). But you can use any fine compound for buffing.
But I strongly recommend use compounds without coloring 🙃

Судя по ореховой втулке это анкерная система "Bi - flex". На моём страте стандард анкерный стержень заклинило в якоре (металлической муфте под седьмым дотиком) Лучше бы на все фендеры продолжали ставить проверенные временем компрессионные анкера одностороннего действия.

I screw in a large coach bolt and then just hammer out the walnut plug...sometimes it comes out easy and others are a little harder..
If it works - it works 😊
But I recommend heating it up a bit to loosen the glue
Heating and steaming the plug is really the right way to do it.
That way, you can use the nut, as he did, to push the plug out.
The nut is not damaged and can be reused. If you damage the
nut, you then need to make or buy (I think you can buy them)
a new one. But either way, a pain and extra time. 😁✌🖖

Акуратна робота! Єдине, що на Вашому місція я би не використовував в такому місці літол/салідол. З часом він майже полімерізується. Можливо є сенс придбати тюбик молібденової змазки, або щось подібне.

Great work! That first replacement nut missing a hole was funny. Hopefully you had the other one on hand. It would be frustrating waiting for a nut that actually works to arrive before you could finish the job.

Sometimes there are parts of a hex key inside the nut. In most cases, the ball just breaks at the end and sits firmly there. And dealing with it is incredibly painful 🙃

This nut is part of the adjustment mechanizm inside the neck. This mechanism is needed for you to be able compensate string tension (and also for compenstating seasonal changes when humidity level changes) - basicaly to make neck straight :)

Суперклей замість лака, чи він щось робить (відновлює?) із оригінальним лаком? Можна більш розгорнуто?
Дивлячись що розуміти під відновленням:)
Точково можна нанести на деякі лаки цианокрилат поверх. Новий шар суперклею і буде виконувати роль «лаку». Для маленьких сколів або протертостей поліуретану, або поліефіру взагалі ідеально підходить. Не рекомендую так ремонтувати покриття з нітролаку 🙃

The washer goes before the nut, to reinforce the wood. Is my opinion, I've made this job many times, otherwise excellent work.

There are usually two washers, one I that lays between wood and nut and one more from another side of nut, I just assemble in original order 🙃

Sometimes I cover, if I have some issues when pulling out the nut or the walnut plug
