  • With millions of Texans still without power in the wake of a winter storm and frigid temperatures, everyone is looking for someone to blame - like the governor, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) and even the “Green New Deal.” In his latest episode of The Point, CNN’s Chris Cillizza analyzes the politics of Texas’s power tragedy.

They already had the answer at ERCOT. It was recommended years ago that they winterize their lines. They did nothing and now the gas lines are frozen. What do other states, that have colder temperatures do? They have already winterized their lines. Texas chose the cheaper option. They screwed up big time.

It very rarely gets that cold in Texas I honestly don’t blame them for not winterizing their gas and power grid it doesn’t make economic sense. Nor is it really ANYONEs fault it’s sort of an out if the blue odd event that spurred all if this. I don’t think anyone is to blame or anyone is stupid because it’s logical both ways to want to winterize or not want to winterize. The problem is power producers did NOT implement much at all, and all ERCOT did was make a recommendation. Primarily, equipment was never "winterized".
And YES - frozen wind turbines are having a major affect in some areas, and it is NOT the supply of natural gas ... it is primarily the land based power generation equipment could not operate in such frigid temps, but it could have if changes had been emplemented.

Well, to fair, El Paso did not get nearly as cold this time as did other parts of Texas (though certainly much colder than normal). Back in the 2011 cold snap, El Paso Electric had similar failures, with rolling blackouts. In response to that snow storm and extreme cold weather event back in 2011 they spent $4.5 million to repair and winterize their power plants and add more generation capability. West Texas never became part of the independent Texas grid mainly because of geography, it was too far away from the rest of the state and the infrastructure needed to join the Texas grid would have been too expensive. El Paso Electric gets about half of it's power from the Palo Verde Nuclear Power Plant in Arizona, of which it's a part owner.

Wind accounts for only 13% of the total Texas grid output, yet 33% of offline power on Tuesday was wind. The narrative that wind isn't part of the problem is incredibly misleading and having people continue to believe that renewables without energy storage is a viable strategy is going to lead to energy poverty. Its not fossil fuel companies who disagree with your opinion on the role wind turbines had to play in this event, its people concerned for others well being and their access to affordable energy.

But I've seen interviews on TV of people blaming renewable energy for the entirety of the problem. And that's not honest: gas, coal and nuclear, even solar power production has been shortened. And that's because the entire system in Texas has been mismanaged. It's not renewable sources that cause these sort of problems on their own, it's how you manage and administer your systems. Renewable sources, without a doubt, offer a great opportunity and distancing from fossil is the way to go. And of course we'll have plenty to do, technology to adapt and improve, but in the decades to follow it's gonna be inevitable. And there's no proof they are unreliable compared to fossil fuels (which are not that efficient of their own, to be fair).

They also in the documnent stated what improvements in the power grid had to take place for the 2011 disaster not to happen again. The government in Texas at the time left it up to the power companies "to follow best practices" ?! Well as we can tell the energy and power companies did not spend the last 10 years getting their own companies up to handling fridged weather. El Paso did actually spend the money to make sure their energy suppliers could handle it down to -10. So please don't listen to the TX gov saying a hearing needs to take place....they didn't follow the guidelines they were given 10 years ago! Why waste money on a hearing to point fingers if you don't follow thru and make sure the energy supplies are making sure the people in Texas aren't spending days in their own home freezing. Just wait until the pipes start to burst and then you have mold problems as well as destroyed floors and ceilings. This is all so sad and could have been avoided if in the last 10 years winter changes had been made by the energy suppliers.

Deregulation sounds great if you think that means red tape, but most reasonable people understand safety regulations are the first to go. OSHA exists for a reason, and that's because employers need to be told what the bare minimum is or there is no minimum (just like min wage). The same thing goes for utilities, if they aren't forced to invest long term why would they let that bother short term profits?

Enabled by Texas Republicans refusing to join to the national power grid.
We can't send them power, and if we were to emergency connect them, they probably haven't invested in the equipment necessary to properly receive or send excess power.
