Thanks a lot guys. Was a bit puzzled in the beginning ("rebel" part, what are you, Club des Cordeliers meets Sid Vicious or some shit?). But as I had almost the same story with art school, that resonated a bit, and when I got to the fancy artstation part I was completely sold on your keep-it-real agenda. This is pure gold, wish more people could hear it, if they'd care )
Although, as an environment concept designer I might also suggest, that to my observations, good design is being a bit overrated - of course, I was grown on Feng's videos myself, and I value good design the most. But reality is - often "stable result of just not bad design" is good enough as a standard. And I am surprised to what extent the fancy renders help to sell concepts even to your peers. There certainly is a niche for great designers in industry, and I really hope to make it to these places one day. But for an average employer "good enough" is enough, and pursuit for excellence is rarely paid extra, nor plays as a major factor in hiring yet another concept artist guy. And the general playing audiences don't care that much about how nice and original the props and structures are, as long as gameplay is immersive enough. For instance, Helldivers is good enough, although generic as fuck, comparing to, lets say, Death Stranding. I'm totally on your side hoping and sometimes coping, though. Cheers.

great comment ! i agree with this part with "good design is good enough" i heared from one ILM artist that they look for people who understands their pipeline- can you do photobash, do you know 3d to build stuff or kitbash, how to compose images , and understand basics etc - but he said you are not expected to be designer - we have AD for that - so yeah of course some level of design is good
