  • Sylvia Massy shows some of the most compelling, interesting, and extremely rare mics in her collection while sharing stories about the first 100 years of microphone development. And, she's going to let us hear some of her classic mics in action.
In addition to owning the largest microphone collection in the world, Sylvia maintains the world's largest library of original microphone documentation and supporting materials. She keeps over 1000 unique vintage microphone models in her studio and that's only a portion of her entire collection, which contains several historically significant and unusual microphones that simply don't exist anywhere else.
This special recording of an online presentation via Zoom to the AES PNW Section was recorded on August 25, 2020.
This presentation is a unique opportunity to see and learn about some extremely fascinating and rare microphones, from one-of-a-kind prototypes to industry changing - Marconi-Reisz carbons to original Telefunkens, Neumann Gefells, to Amelia Earhart's Western Electric, from the Rauland Duo 1247 to the MGM church, and pretty much everything in between. You might use microphones every day in your job, but you've never seen anything like this!
    About our Presenter
She's the unpredictable producer and engineer renowned for her work with Tool, System of a Down, Johnny Cash and Prince. She's received over 25 gold and platinum records including awards for her work with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sevendust and Tom Petty. She's also an accomplished fine artist, a published columnist, in-demand educator, and relentless entrepreneur. But to her many friends, she's just Sylvia, the Radiant Being.
Sylvia's recent book, Recording Unhinged, dares you to abandon safe record-making, to get out from behind the windshield, stick your head out the sunroof, and put the pedal to the metal! Sylvia Massy and her cohort of celebrity music industry producers, engineers, and recording stars discard fixed notions about how music should be recorded. They explore techniques that fall outside the norm and yield emotionally powerful, incredibly personal, gut-wrenching, and even scary recordings.
    About this meeting:
It set the record for attendance for any PNW AES meeting, at 664 tickets reserved, and 400 actual attendees. Ticket requests came from 29 U.S. States, Territories, and the District of Columbia, and 32 other countries from around the world. It's difficult to tell completely who was at the meeting, but we know there were people from
    Arizona
    California
    Colorado
    Connecticut
    Florida
    Georgia
    Hawaii

This is an amazing microphone collection. Sylvia is lucky to have been able to buy Bob Paquette’s microphone museum collection. He worked at RCA and bought many of his mics from them. Sylvia is standing on the shoulders of a giant here, Bob Paquette certainly deserves a ton of recognition for collecting all these amazing microphones. I hope Sylvia paid Bob’s estate very well for all of them. RIP Bob!!!

The shoulders of a giant. I met Bob and had a tour of his museum over decade ago. I'm really sad to hear that his collection has moved so far away.
He was an amazing person full of amazing info that he was eager and happy to share. He also wrote his own book on microphones.
I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to meet and talk to Bob and have him show me his collection and listen to his amazing stories.

A marvelous presentation. However I wish I could warm up to the SM57, but that mic has never appealed to me.

stunning collection, though some models make absolutely no sense easthetical wise. I wonder how differenct or rather how they would sound in a modern mix, i lwould love to hear a full song only using the old microphes.

Also Sylvia I reached out earlier this year but want to reiterate Dave Rat is really interested in doing a 1 on 1 with you, which i think could be amazing if you both did a collaboration on a live /studio,application that would make from studio to stage a more seemless transition for engineers abd bands to use maybe&if not at the very least a conversation we would all enjoy witnessing

@ 1:12:23 the she's holding/showing is a RCA 77D NOT DX. 77D's have the round control plate. The DX's have a diamond shaped one.

At about 1:02 a Shure model 55 is incorrectly identified as the "Elvis Mic". The "Elvis Mic" is the later smaller Shure 55-S not the much larger model 55.

    Hi everyone,
Can y'all recommend me some microphones that:
-can be used to record with a smartphone
-can also be used with and benefit from an
    audiointerface
-versatile enough to be used on most
    instruments and singing.
    -studio quality.nstruments and singing.
    -studio/high quality
