Beautiful. Illustration is most certainly art. I live in England but along with my husband have visited America several times and we both love the art we have had the pleasure to see in America. Above all we think the work of Norman Rockwell is amongst the best. Thank you .
The photo of the man on the window seat that is reported to be Arrow Collar Man Charles Beach is actually J.C. Leyendecker's brother Francis Xavier Leyendecker. The photo is from a Home Magazine circa 1920's that shows the interior of the Leyendecker estate in New Rochelle, NY, and was a several page article.
AsI watch this video again I'm so thankful for the NMAI. They are preserving and presenting American art at its finest and giving these great artists the respect they earned while entertaining and often educating us with their visual stories. This makes me want to get to the museum as soon as I can. Anyone who appreciates art has to put this on their "must see" list.
I love this. I've planned to visit this museum for years now, but haven't got around to it yet. It's on my bucket list, however. Love that Whoopi loves illustration art as much as I do. I'm also thrilled that the art world is beginning to finally come to it's senses as to what art is. I'll never forget an art professor of mine telling me that my art was too pretty and more like illustrations that fine art. It discouraged me for a while, but no more.
This is the most amazing museum I have ever seen. I would go here every day! I think everyone should visit this extraordinary museum and it's paintings.
finally, a place to go see all of my favorite illustration art firsthand. took a tour last summer and loved it, the staff was so welcoming and helpful and the mansion itself is exquisitely decorated. can't wait to visit again.
i'm still waiting for a really great analysis of the public fall of leyendecker and the rise of rockwell in american illustration. leyendecker was the most fascinating subversive in every american home - imho.
Thank you for this fantastic overview of American Illustration and it's principle founders. Brief but informative, and classy too. Are there any sources you recommend I can pick up to learn about this topic? My grandpa Wally was an illustrator for a studio in NYC called the CEC (Charles E. Cooper Studios), so I am really drawn to this form of art. I hope you come out with more videos!
Illustration is Art! I love illustrations even more than paintings. A childhood friend of mine is an excellent illustrator who has been invited to illustrate books, but sadly she didn't take up the offer. :(
Io e mia moglie collezioniamo libri illustrati e arte popolare.
When I was a kid the idea that illustration would "arbitrarily" be excluded from artistic consideration would have been completely absurd. I must admit, as I grow older, and see the direction America seems to be heading in, I'm more and more sympathetic towards the idea of rejecting the artistic legitimacy of corporate and commercial art. It's hard to say I can ever be completely converted in the face of such beautiful work, but I must admit there's merit to doubt, regardless.
Hah! Laurence Cutler begins by defining illustration as pictures to be reproduced in books and magazines. A few minutes later Whoopi Goldberg says Michelangelo, who never made pictures to be reproduced in books and magazines, was one of the greatest illustrators. Time to get your act together.
Wow. What a great video and what a stunning museum-mansion I would like to visit next time I'm back east.

I watched this a few years ago but enjoyed it just as much this 2nd time.

He fell?
@@Garl_Vinland he fell from the public's graces rapidly.
@@ho2cultcha That's pretty sad.. I suppose Rockewell was then "Appointed" as the new All American illustrator.
This museum is definitely now on my Someday Maybe wish list. Some very inspiring artists. Until then, this video is the next best thing.
this video is wonderful!
Nevermind. I just saw your website. Thanks!
wow this is sooo great

It's amazing! I want to visit it!

Excellent video, but no one in it told us where this wonderful museum was located.

I hope to visit next fall & see the colors of leaves, etc. as well. I hope you get to go someday, too.

So,...where the heck is this museum ?

who would've known that Whoopi was into this kind of stuff
Why wouldn't she be?
She really understands it too it’s cool
Parrish. The one word is sufficient.
Must see
I truly do not understand the difference between art and illustration. They teach beardsley, Mucha, Thomas Hart Benton in Modern Art classes.
Thank you whoopi........🤭
I watched this until whoopie and then gave it a "THUMBS DOWN"!
This video has only taught me that Whoopie Goldberg has good taste.
Michelangelo was not an illustrator I'm afraid to tell people
Illustration not being considered art is like a green apple not being considered an apple cause the skin isn’t red.

i was called a sell out when i what into illustration.
It's like art on steroids.... or mushrooms or something.
