Hello and welcome to the channel. Before making the series I had never heard of Carlos or seen any of his work either. But as soon as I saw what he created he immediately became one of my favourite illustrators of all time. He was tremendously forward looking, decorative and funny. I'm glad you now know about him and his work too.
This is the fourth video that I have watched in this series and I am in awe of its quality. Each one has been a 15 minute delight. Pete Beard is one of the best types of expert. His videos are not aimed at showing off, or making the viewer feel ignorant, rather they are sharing his enthusiasm (albeit a restrained British enthusiasm) through wonderful selections from some of the world’s greatest illustrators. The flowing informative commentary enhances the images and both are underpinned by a soundtrack that is so in tune with the subjects that it can almost be overlooked. Bravo, Pete Beard, your gift to the internet has set the bar of infotainment very high indeed. I am certain that your many followers are very grateful for the effort that you put in to enrich our lives. Thank you!

The most wonderful history of illustration ever! How ironic that Leyendecker lost his work at The Saturday Evening Post which later turned to Norman Rockwell. It is so wonderful to learn about these illustrators whose work I have admired my whole 72 years!

I discovered J.C Leyendecker when I was living in New York in the 70's. One of the most powerful and expressive artist of his time. Seeing his work discussed here is a real joy and the only sad thing is that he appears among the "Unsung". Thank you for giving him this space; he truly deserves it.

To be honest I thought I'd replied to your earlier comments but youtube insist I didn't so I'll roll my replies into this one. I was all set for a pilgrimage to the WHR museum when covid and lockdown struck, so that trip is now top of my bucket list when this madness is finally over. Time is of the essence. And regarding Leyendecker and his brother I realise I squandered them somewhat by putting them - and others such as Parrish - into the unsung series. At that stage I didn't know I would also be making videos devoted to single illustrators. Anyway, they are now in the pipeline for precisely that purpose, although when they will reappear is anyone's guess as the to-do list just keeps on getting longer...
Wonderful to see the great Brazilian illustrator, Jose Carlos... his work has its own verve and energy. I knew of these different publications, incl. 'Tico Tico' , but never imagined they could all be by the same artist.

Hi there and thanks for watching. I'm nor sure what you mean by 'teaches illustration as an art'. If you mean books about how to illustrate you would be better off searching the web - there are many many free tutorials. If you mean my books on the subject of illustration there are too many to list. But my advice is to start with a type of illustration or an illustrator you like and see what has been published using google. This will lead to a lot more. My books are all just on types of illustration such as comics/fantasy/ art deco and so on or specific illustrators such as Heath Robinson or Gil Elvgren or Frank Frazetta. I hope this helps
Thanks so much for this series, it's absolutely wonderful. I have to keep pausing the video to see the illustrations properly because they fly past so quickly, but I'm going to try playing them at a slower speed. I hope that when you make more vids in the future you will consider being a little more leisurely in your presentation and also making the music a bit lower in volume so that it isn't competing/intruding with what you're saying. These are just my prefernces/requests that would make these videos even more enjoyable for me. As they stand, I love the content and the presentation and I'm so grateful for your time and effort in putting these together and uploading them. Fantastic. Very warm wishes, :)
Hello to you and thanks a lot for your positive response to the channel. This has been a fairly steep learning curve for me and I hope that if you continue to watch you'll find the pace a little slower and the music less intrusive. I don't always get it right but I've certainly got better at it. Also in later videos the picture quality is higher definition and there are subtitles so you can always turn the track off if necessary.
Outstanding work! Thank you for creating this historic series! As you mentioned, J.C. Leyendecker was Rockwell's idol. Many elements of his style can be seen in Rockwell's work. Rockwell seems to have emulated his style while dropping the bold tonal variation and deliberate stylism in favor of a more layered and realistic approach. It's also ironic that while Rockwell embraced (even depended on) using photography in painting, Leyendeker despised and even viewed it as a weakness. It's a shame that Rockwell receives the lions share of recognition while the man he idolized and emulated seems largely forgotten. Thanks for mentioning his brother as well. Frank always seems to get the short end of the stick.
Hello and thanks for your insight. I hope you persevere with others in the series because there's a long list of American realist painters who get overlooked because of the obsession with Rockwell. Not his fault of course, but this is how history gets distorted and talent forgotten.
J.C. Leyendecker's signature that can be hinted at as assuredly unique makes me wish that they were all featured as part of each profile. Hello, and thanks for the suggestion. When I set out to make the series it did occur to me that it would be a graphically interesting thing to do, but sadly many are completely illegible (which sort of defeats the object of the exercise) and more than you would think didn't even sign their work. So I gave up the idea, but thanks anyway. What i can say is that both Leyendecker's are about to feature at greater length in a video exclusively about them and their careers.
I love this series of videos so I've started watching them from the very beginning. If you haven't already, please consider doing a video on Italian cover artist Walter Molino. I find his intense, action-oriented paintings to be exceptional, but I know very little about him. Thanks for all your hard work!

There's no reason you would know this but I confine myself to those born between 1850 and 1910. If it's any consolation I am going to include his predecessor at La Dominica Del Corriere - Achille Beltrame. And I'm part way through a history of Italian illustration in which Molino will certainly appear. It's sad how many amazing illustrations are created that one may never be exposed to unless you have luck on your side or find a resource like the one you are creating. By the way, and I don't know if this is of any interest to you, I found out about your channel through a course created by Marshall Vandruff (though I don't recall if it was he or a fellow student that made the original recommendation). One of J.C. Leyendecker's favorite Jazz Age models was an actor named Neil Hamilton, a young Adonis type. Hamilton's remembered today for his role as Commissioner Gordon in the '60s BATMAN series.
Hello again and funnily enough I'm in the middle of making a video devoted entirely to the Leyendeckers - the brief one you've seen is too superficial. But I came across a photo of Hamilton, even though I can find nothing of Charles Beach. I remember him from Batman when I was growing up. Frank Gorshin's Riddler was the best bit for me.

But if you wait for a while I'm well into a video dedicated excusively to J.C. and his brother in nore detail than in the unsung series. As with all of them, Leyendecker, became a pariah because The publisher of the magazine Post, and the public found out his preference for boys! However, he was a very great and innovative artist!

Hello and thanks for the appreciation. I don't think anything official has been recorded. But it is known that he hired models, and set up elaborate scenes in his studio, from which he created drawings and colour studies to inform the eventual finished painting. And given the remarkable finish of the work I would estimate that he must have spent somewhere around 5 to 6 days on a typical Evening Post image. Of course that would depend on complexity and how many characters so maybe occasionally a bit less. All of which is just an educated guess, though.
Thanks for the introduction to J.C. Leyendecker. Glancing over J.C.Leyendecker and Norman Rockwell's wikipedia stories is reminiscent of the novel "The Great Gatsby", mentioned in another comment. Old and new money on Long Island Sound. J.C.Leyendecker arrived in America in the late nineteen century. His father was related to the President of McAvoy Brewing Co., Chicago and his mother to the Vice President. The company had ties to the Chief of Police and a senator. Chicago has a reputation for corruption. Norman Rockwell's family history goes back to the settlers of New England arriving on the Hopewell ship centuries before. Leyendecker moved to New Rochelle, across from Long Island, in 1915, Rockwell 1916. Both artistically have roots through their teachers to the Academie Julian of Gustave Boulanger and Joseph Lefebure. Rockwell also to the Pyle Group. The tie that binds the two is the Saturday Evening Post. Leyendecker started working with the paper in 1896, Rockwell twenty years later 1916. Btw, John LaGatta who illustrated for the Post lived in Sands Point, Long Island, "East Egger" in the "Great Gatsby". Think Vanderbilts. New Rochelle appears to a company town for illustrators. George Horace Lorimer, Editor of the Saturday Evening Post, is a pivotal point for the careers of both illustrators. Probably, its not so much a matter technically who used photography in their work as what Lorimer wanted the Post to represent. The Gilded Age was coming to a close at the turn of the century and a different veneer was needed for the readership. Wouldn't doubt Rockwell was 'cloned' after Leyendecker to provide a smooth transition from single guy to family values guy. Also, at this time the trial of the Stanford White murder was going on. The accused Harry K. Thaw's wife Evelyn Nesbit, the "It" Girl was interviewed by Nell Brinkley creator of the "Brinkley" Girl who was to replace the "Gibson" Girl signaling the passing of the baton. If you do a presentation on the Dirks brothers as well as the Leyendecker brothers will that be a new series of Unsung Lesser Known who Died thru Overdosing Heros?
@@petebeard J.C. Leyendecker's work reminds me of *Luca della Robbia* and his nephew Andrea's *glazed terracotta* pieces. He uses Robbia's elements in his work. Plus, J.C.L. 'sculpts' his figures as he were craving them in bas-relief, then glazing them to give them secular highlights. May be of interest "J.C. Leyendecker - a close-up of his paintings #22" on TH-cam by 'Schaefer Art'. He took photos of J.C.L. work at the Haggin Museum, Stockton, California. Many close-up and available for download at a link mentioned in the comment section. See the commenter 'pareptican images' and a link given by Schaefer. (I can't paste the link and post comment.) On some you can see the pencil registration marks for the printer. P.s. You would know this. J.C. Leyendecker wrote a very nice letter to an art student describing his painting method. I was impressed that he did that. Sad about the falling out with his brother and sister. Read the movie "The Servant", 1963, with Harold Pintar's screenplay was loosely on based on J.C.L..

I'm a working class (but fairly educated) fellow from Manchester in the grey industrial northwest of England. Some viewers have said the voice is similar to that of the actor Sean Bean, and that's nearer the mark as he was born some 40 miles away. sorry but that is not exactly true.. you probably have been influenced by the exposition of his work on Moreira Salles, haven't you?... but the fact is he was not different from every single artists of that time... yes, it was a pretty racist society, and his work surely shows that... but he was not more racist than everybody around him (or at least you can't really tell that by his work).

Amazing! I just discovered your channel today and i became instantly an addict to it! Can you please share with us some of the great books that teaches illustration as an art that you have in your library?
Hi there and thanks for watching. I'm nor sure what you mean by 'teaches illustration as an art'. If you mean books about how to illustrate you would be better off searching the web - there are many many free tutorials. If you mean my books on the subject of illustration there are too many to list. But my advice is to start with a type of illustration or an illustrator you like and see what has been published using google. This will lead to a lot more. My books are all just on types of illustration such as comics/fantasy/ art deco and so on or specific illustrators such as Heath Robinson or Gil Elvgren or Frank Frazetta. I hope this helps

Thanks so much for this series, it's absolutely wonderful. I have to keep pausing the video to see the illustrations properly because they fly past so quickly, but I'm going to try playing them at a slower speed. I hope that when you make more vids in the future you will consider being a little more leisurely in your presentation and also making the music a bit lower in volume so that it isn't competing/intruding with what you're saying. These are just my prefernces/requests that would make these videos even more enjoyable for me. As they stand, I love the content and the presentation and I'm so grateful for your time and effort in putting these together and uploading them. Fantastic. Very warm wishes, :)
Hello to you and thanks a lot for your positive response to the channel. This has been a fairly steep learning curve for me and I hope that if you continue to watch you'll find the pace a little slower and the music less intrusive. I don't always get it right but I've certainly got better at it. Also in later videos the picture quality is higher definition and there are subtitles so you can always turn the track off if necessary.

Outstanding work! Thank you for creating this historic series! As you mentioned, J.C. Leyendecker was Rockwell's idol. Many elements of his style can be seen in Rockwell's work. Rockwell seems to have emulated his style while dropping the bold tonal variation and deliberate stylism in favor of a more layered and realistic approach. It's also ironic that while Rockwell embraced (even depended on) using photography in painting, Leyendeker despised and even viewed it as a weakness. It's a shame that Rockwell receives the lions share of recognition while the man he idolized and emulated seems largely forgotten. Thanks for mentioning his brother as well. Frank always seems to get the short end of the stick.
Hello and thanks for your insight. I hope you persevere with others in the series because there's a long list of American realist painters who get overlooked because of the obsession with Rockwell. Not his fault of course, but this is how history gets distorted and talent forgotten.

Hello, and thanks for the suggestion. When I set out to make the series it did occur to me that it would be a graphically interesting thing to do, but sadly many are completely illegible (which sort of defeats the object of the exercise) and more than you would think didn't even sign their work. So I gave up the idea, but thanks anyway. What i can say is that both Leyendecker's are about to feature at greater length in a video exclusively about them and their careers.

I love this series of videos so I've started watching them from the very beginning. If you haven't already, please consider doing a video on Italian cover artist Walter Molino. I find his intense, action-oriented paintings to be exceptional, but I know very little about him. Thanks for all your hard work!
Hello and many thanks for your appreciation. And thanks for the suggestion, but infortunately Molino was born just a little too late to feature in the series. There's no reason you would know this but I confine myself to those born between 1850 and 1910. If it's any consolation I am going to include his predecessor at La Dominica Del Corriere - Achille Beltrame. And I'm part way through a history of Italian illustration in which Molino will certainly appear. It's sad how many amazing illustrations are created that one may never be exposed to unless you have luck on your side or find a resource like the one you are creating. One of J.C. Leyendecker's favorite Jazz Age models was an actor named Neil Hamilton, a young Adonis type. Hamilton's remembered today for his role as Commissioner Gordon in the '60s BATMAN series.
Hello again and funnily enough I'm in the middle of making a video devoted entirely to the Leyendeckers - the brief one you've seen is too superficial. But I came across a photo of Hamilton, even though I can find nothing of Charles Beach. I remember him from Batman when I was growing up. Frank Gorshin's Riddler was the best bit for me.

Hello and thanks for the appreciation. I don't think anything official has been recorded. But it is known that he hired models, and set up elaborate scenes in his studio, from which he created drawings and colour studies to inform the eventual finished painting. And given the remarkable finish of the work I would estimate that he must have spent somewhere around 5 to 6 days on a typical Evening Post image. Of course that would depend on complexity and how many characters so maybe occasionally a bit less. All of which is just an educated guess, though.

Glancing over J.C.Leyendecker and Norman Rockwell's wikipedia stories is reminiscent of the novel "The Great Gatsby", mentioned in another comment. Old and new money on Long Island Sound.
J.C.Leyendecker arrived in America in the late nineteen century. His father was related to the President of McAvoy Brewing Co., Chicago and his mother to the Vice President. The company had ties to the Chief of Police and a senator. Chicago has a reputation for corruption.
Norman Rockwell's family history goes back to the settlers of New England arriving on the Hopewell ship centuries before.
Leyendecker moved to New Rochelle, across from Long Island, in 1915, Rockwell 1916.
Both artistically have roots through their teachers to the Academie Julian of Gustave Boulanger and Joseph Lefebure. Rockwell also to the Pyle Group.
The tie that binds the two is the Saturday Evening Post. Leyendecker started working with the paper in 1896, Rockwell twenty years later 1916.
Btw, John LaGatta who illustrated for the Post lived in Sands Point, Long Island, "East Egger" in the "Great Gatsby". Think Vanderbilts. New Rochelle appears to a company town for illustrators.
George Horace Lorimer, Editor of the Saturday Evening Post, is a pivotal point for the careers of both illustrators.
Probably, its not so much a matter technically who used photography in their work as what Lorimer wanted the Post to represent. The Gilded Age was coming to a close at the turn of the century and a different veneer was needed for the readership. Wouldn't doubt Rockwell was 'cloned' after Leyendecker to provide a smooth transition from single guy to family values guy.
Also, at this time the trial of the Stanford White murder was going on. The accused Harry K. Thaw's wife Evelyn Nesbit, the "It" Girl was interviewed by Nell Brinkley creator of the "Brinkley" Girl who was to replace the "Gibson" Girl signaling the passing of the baton.
If you do a presentation on the Dirks brothers as well as the Leyendecker brothers will that be a new series of Unsung Lesser Known who Died thru Overdosing Heros?

J.C. Leyendecker's work reminds me of
*Luca della Robbia* and his nephew Andrea's *glazed terracotta* pieces. He uses Robbia's elements in his work. Plus, J.C.L. 'sculpts' his figures as he were craving them in bas-relief, then glazing them to give them secular highlights.

sorry but that is not exactly true.. you probably have been influenced by the exposition of his work on Moreira Salles, haven't you?... but the fact is he was not different from every single artists of that time... yes, it was a pretty racist society, and his work surely shows that... but he was not more racist than everybody around him (or at least you can't really tell that by his work).
