    Ok, I just realized how great you guys are at editing these. One of my favorite things about you guys who are my favorite bird people to watch is that you give the written screens with very clear communication - which you always stress over and over. I just love it, it's so good. Am really missing Nemo and hope she comes home soon. Much love to Jamie Leigh, Capri, and Dave, and thank you bird owner and you cute sun conures.

    This is super helpful! I am birdsitting right now for a friend's velcro bird who is even stickier than my bird. He's such a smart bird who has responded pretty quickly to the training we have done in other areas so far. I'm definitely going to try this with him. Otherwise, even though I love his company, it is hard for me to leave the room without having to lock his cage since he is a great flyer to boot and I prefer for him to have a larger play area while I'm not in the room rather than just be limited to his cage.

    Thanks for all the amazing information. I use a lot of your training technique's on my 2 lil parrotlets and newly adopted green cheek conure. Even tho you guys usually deal with bigger parrots these technique's still work for my little ones. Learning their body language and being more aware of it has really helped a TON too. I really appreciate all the hard work you put into educating us all. You guys are doing a great job. Thanks!! I'm sending you all of my best wishes!!

    It is nice to see smaller birds, I've problems getting my plet to step up do recall etc. I had no problems training my last p'let to hang out, fetch, recall from anywhere in the house, spin, tumble this one generally doesn't like hands and keeps distance when out, he was a bit velcro though if I was doing ANYTHING.
    This one Will touch a stick or finger tip if it's close enough, but I can't seem to increase the distance.

It was a routine for me to go in there and vacuum and whistle at same time, he would always fluff up and get excited than fly at my face or bite my shoulder. i think he thought it was a game or something ? He loves the vacuum and always gets excited when i use it, i think he thinks it's his aswell lol. Now i no longer even look at him when i am in there with him. One thing I'd love to see someone try with a bird is stationing by training the release first. It sounds odd but Susan Garret does it with dogs where she reenforces lightly the station area but actually only builds the cue for leaving the station. If the dog leaves before the cue they get nothing but are lured back on the station. It builds the waiting and anticipation be cued from a station.

    I know it’s probably bad manners.... but I love my Velcro bird cockateil 🤣 (he/she will fly off to poop/eat/stretch wings, but otherwise it will just want to hang out with me. It’s favorite thing to do is follow me around the house while I travel from room to room. It’ll start flying as soon as I pass a door and kind of “hover” to give me a head start then will “station” on my shoulder when I get to the middle of the room)

    What was it about the covers etc that they were doing that was wrong? I cover Missy in her cage at bedtime and she has a tent like bed/thingo hanging on her tree, she's been in it and out and isn't phased by it. I just figured that if she felt like it was too noisy or whatever, she would find going in the tent a bit comforting to go in?

    • @bestflockingfriends
      @bestflockingfriends 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @juliebycott The huts and cage covers mimick a nest and the accompanying behaviors such as territorial biting, regurgitating, poor general behavior and aggression toward people and other birds. (I’m not a professional but these are my birds - and me - in this video and these are all things that have reduced or stopped completely.)

      @@bestflockingfriends I thought cage covers helped the birds sleep at night? I cover my birds cages so they can get 12-14 hours of sleep. They go right to sleep when their covers go on. This helps them NOT be hormonal. I totally understand the happy hut thing, but the cage cover thing makes zero sense

    • @sjusovare
      @sjusovare 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@doctoroclock7732 it does make sense, with a cover the cage becomes shielded from the environment like if it was the inside of a hollow tree, which encourages nesting behavior (not only with birds but also with arboricole mammals). In that respect, darkening the whole room helps them sleep as much, and does not have the same nesting effect as they can still see the whole environment outside of their cage.

    I've found that I have to go for give and take with my bird. Sometimes I am really busy at my job (home office), so I can't actually pay attention to her. She'll do anything to get my attention. Sometimes bad stuff, and never relenting. Eventually I found that if I just stopped and gave her four or five minutes of the attention she wanted (kisses, petting, clicking, tasting), then she would happily go off after that and amuse herself for about 20-30 minutes before she needed to check in again.

      @shenzielover 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Quoting a previous comment from Jamie:
      "cage cover issues stem from birds being covered yet action still happening around them so they’re still not receiving adequate sleep. They also make some birds nesty and territorial because they often chew on the cover (safety hazard as well as allowing them to make nesting material)
      Sleeper cages or separate rooms for sleeping usually do better for most birds.
      "

    • @Nicky1026
      @Nicky1026 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hannah thanks i was wondering the same thing because it wasn’t clarified in the video. I guess I’ll stop covering the bird cage. I took away the sleeper huts forever ago, try to make sure he gets 12 hrs of sleep, etc. even changed up the diet only thing left is the cage cover I suppose although a veterinarian suggested melatonin to decrease hormonal behavior Ill see how taking away the cage cover helps/not.

    Hi Bird Tricks! Loved the video, as usual, very useful stuff in there! I was just a little confused at the end, I've never heard that overnight cage covers can trigger hormonal episodes! I thought they were used in order to make it dark for birds so they get enough sleep and so that they DON'T get hormonal. It kind of makes sense since it makes the cage a big 'hide hut' essentially. But what are we supposed to do for the birds in order to get them enough rest? I put mine in a separate bedroom with a cover over their cage because it doesn't get 100% dark in that room with the lights off.

    so i was listening along and towards the end I heard "take the cage covers off". this wasn't specifically directed towards the birds when they sleep right? Also I was wondering with target training is it better to have disposable chopsticks or are reusable OK? Also I was wondering what would the best treat for him be when training when his old diet has a lot of sunflower seeds and seems to be reluctant to do anything? Also he only steps up when he wants or bites

    How can I train Tickford the blue and gold macaw? He is still weaning and therefore I can’t give him treats yet as he can’t eat any trays.

    I got a sun about three weeks ago... she will come out of her cage, but won’t leave her door. She sits on her door. She will eat out of our hand, but if we don’t have food, she’s tries to bite. Any advice? I need a Velcro bird, I want to be this lady, lol.

    Hi I'm new here I was just wondering is it possible to train a green cheek conure. I believe it's a girl and she's not yet a year old. I got her last year on 21st may and the guy in the pet shop said she's around 12 weeks old and was hand reared. She is such a sweet bird and my children all love her. I think it would be really nice to train her.

    What did you guys use as a treat? I have a Conure but he’s not into sunflower seeds, and I want to switch it up, I’m constantly using Millet

    Loved this video and will be starting this training today with my male eclectus that will not stay off of me. I don't mind, but there's certain cases where I want him to be out of his cage without needing to be on me. I work from home and my green cheek stays out all day (unfortunately her wings are clipped, we got her that way) and I'd love for him to be able to be out as well while I work. My question though is about cage covers. What is the issue with using a cage cover? I might have missed it somewhere. I currently cover my birds at night because my office is in my living room and that's where I spend all of my time so my birds are there too.

      Shauna Wesloskie cage cover issues stem from birds being covered yet action still happening around them so they’re still not receiving adequate sleep. They also make some birds nesty and territorial because they often chew on the cover (safety hazard as well as allowing them to make nesting material)
      Sleeper cages or separate rooms for sleeping usually do better for most birds.

      @@BirdTricks Thank you! I will definitely see about moving ours to another room and eliminate cage covers.

      Shauna Wesloskie we did (move cages into their own bedroom for night quiet) and it’s been a life changing experience! They are so much more pleasant during the day and we enjoy their affection more now than ever.

    Interesting, are you guys advocates for zero cage covers? Because Australian (Queensland) houses are quite breezy so often used them to keep them warmer in the winter as the house would get down to 7-12 inside.

      NV PhD cage covers can increase hormone behaviors. I'm pretty sure that they mentioned this in a video or blog post, but they advocate that birds should have a cage that they can sleep in that is in a quiet, dark room for their 12 hours of sleep. It's better to have the room dark rather than just make the cage dark by throwing a cover on it.

    While she’s complaining I WISH my bird loved me this much. My last bird was really calm but my current bird isn’t as friendly. She bites my fingers quite hard but doesn’t mind my hands in her cage or stepping up. She bites my hands AFTER stepping up. I was wondering if you guys had any advice for this?

    Thank fucking god for this video.
    My conure is new, and it’s definitely his most irritating habit. I love him so much, but he’s constantly wanting to be on my shoulder or my sisters shoulder, and he’s always chewing our jewellery or earrings or whatever her can get his little mouth on. Which is all fair and fine, but he throws little tantrums when he doesn’t get to chew on what he wants, or if something in the room startled him. And that turns into a heightened energy, and he won’t listen or step up after that point. And then just climbs all over you throwing a fit. And I need him to learn to get off of me when he’s feeling like that, and that he can’t CONSTANTLY be a part of eeeeverything I’m doing.

    I have a Ghala cockatoo and I live in Cyprus and we are such a small island we have not even one doctor for birds only vets for cats and dogs and I don’t know where to ger advice from.... In the morning I found in her food and also in the box of the food that I have for her some black insects walking so I emptied all and threw them away and washed all of her cage.... in the past a vet who is the only one who knows little about birds in the island gave me a Tubernil spray and told me that I need to spray here once per month for health purposes and I was doing that. After I cleaned the cage I sprayed her on her back like doctor told me but some hours later I saw the expiry date of the spray was 1 year ago.... 😞😞😞 She never accepted water or bathing but I took water and sprayed her so the medicine maybe will be removed because it was expired.... will anything happen to her from the expired spray????? She now scratching her feathers all the time.... is it from water bathing? Is it from the expired spray?

      I know that after a water bath birds groom their feathers. I wasn't sure if you mean your bird is now plucking its feathers?

      Try putting Bragg's apple cider vinegar with the mother. (a drop or two) into the water bowl your bird drinks from. This helps to kill bacterial infections. April from Parrot Playhouse on u tube puts this in her all her parrots water bowls every day to keep from bacterial things starting up. The vinegar has to have The Mother in it. Bragg's vinegar should be able to be found in most grocery stores. Prayers for your bird!❤🐦🙏
