Shifty was an amazing shot, with unbelievable eyes, while they were hunkered down in the forest he spotted a new German artillery placement in the forest far away from them, when they got their own artillerymen to scope it out and measure the distance they had trouble seeing it even through binoculars. Shifty said he noticed it from a tree that "wasn't there the day before".
What actually happened was the Germans would use guys hiding inside fake trees as observation posts for artillery spotters. He had been staring at the tree line for so many days, he noticed there was a new tree that popped up overnight and called it out.
Toye and Guarnere used to laugh about going into town after the war and buying a pair of shoes after the war. One got the left and one got the right. Kinda a morbid sense of humor, but you have to admire them.

I've probably watched this a couple hundred times and seen at least a hundred reactions to it and never caught the random soldier during the last scene saying, "There they go, riding out again". Damn straight they deserve a ride. Thanks for catching that.

thanks for watching this series guys. My dad was a WWII vet and he and his generation were heros to me. some of your people and soldiers are and have gone thru a similar hell. from the USA, wishing you all the best and safe lives, and peace soonest. don't give up the fight.
Also Speirs' run in the show wasn't historically accurate, he ran a longer distance in real life. The showrunners toned it down because they thought nobody would believe it if they showed the full distance. The same goes for Shifty Powers taking out the sniper; in reality, the sniper was farther away, and the angle was worse.
The truly amazing thing is the run the Spiers made was actually much longer than shown in the episode. In the episode it looks like he runs a few blocks and back in reality it was over 3/4 of a mile in each direction under enemy fire pretty much the entire way. It was shortened in the show for time and because the producers thought no one would believe it was real if they showed how long it really was. Great reaction guys, keep up the good work. I have always felt that one of the biggest strengths of this show is how is shows war and its battles from different points of view. The commanding officer in one episode, the scared private in another episode, the repalcement soldier coming in seeing battle for the first time ,the veteran soldier lost behing enemy lines fighting to live, the medic, and in this episode the 1st Sargeant. THe man who like you said is the bridge between the officers and the men. its the same war and same battles but each seems it and experiences it very differently. THe show does a masterful job of showing all the different points of view.
They did Dike pretty dirty in the show, from what I've read, he was wounded in the shoulder during the attack which had him panic not being able to lead. He apparently was competent but he fell apart during the Battle of the Bulge. Before this he did get two Bronze stars. One for a defense of a road junction by organizing scattered airborne soldiers aswell as another for helping three wounded soldiers under fire from an exposed position.
Winters and Lipton would not have ever said it like that, if it wasn't true, he was from a prestigious privileged military family and he kept buggering off to hang out with his Westpoint buddies playing cards and drinking when he has no business neglecting his duty.

The shot on the German sniper at the end was an insane shot. The guys said that afterwards they went to inspect the sniper and found a bullet hole right between the eye brows and it was at about 75 yards, which is a fairly far distance to make that kind of shot without a scope

Yes, history shows us Speirs was every bit the hero in this action. History also tells us that they downplayed the distance he covered because they didn't think what he did would be believable. great reaction.
They also downplayed the distance of 'Shifty' Powers taking out the German sniper. It was about twice the distance depicted in the episode. Same reason.
As a veteran, I appreciate both of these reactions. I don't know if Ron has had military experience/training (mandatory military service in Israel, maybe?), but his comments are well thought out and accurate as to what was transpiring on the battlefield. Keep up the good work.
Dike was in fact, a well accomplished commander, just not in his time with Easy company, some say it's because of how extraordinarily tight the Easy guys were that he just couldn't make his way into being part of them, some say it's because during his time with Easy he was in a place mentally like Buck Compton was after Toye and Guarnere were wounded.
Shifty Powers sniper hit was from about 450 feet or 140 meters. . His aim was through the regular sight of the standard issue M 1 rifle. He was deadly. “No Fear Speirs” nickname was “Sparky Speirs” and during the research of Stephen Ambrose’s book, he denied Nothing concerning the rumors about him.

I believe the show did LT Dike dirty it’s understandable why due to easy company not like him or his command style. But earlier in the war dike was a competent and brave commander. On dday he lead his squad destroying machine guns and in Holland he was awarded the bronze star due to successfully carrying a wounded man to safety while under sniper fire while being wounded himself. While at the battle of foy there are conflicting reports as to what happened dike but whats the msot probably thing that happened was he hit and was bleeding and thus going into shock. Because after foy dike was rotated out and served in the army up till Korea as an honorable officer thought out his career. While winter never was about to go out and lead his men he knew he had bigger responsibilities he just turned around and in his own words “picked the first officer he saw” and thus he choose spiers because he saw him first.
One thing I like to point out for this episode that isn’t made super clear is that the forests in this area aren’t natural. The locals farmed the trees meaning they planted them in rows like corn. This meant the Germans could see down the row of trees as far as their eyes or binoculars could see. Thus they could see the American troops in the forest clearly whereas the Germans were obscured by the buildings in the town. TLDR the American troops may as well been in an open field with how clearly they could be observed by the enemy

141K American soldiers died in the European Theater of WW2. Twice as many as the Pacific. One of the great things that gave meaning to their sacrifice was the creation of the State of Israel. We should all remember that at this time.
Winters has said that Spiers was standing right behind him at the time, and that Winters thoroughly believed that Spiers made sure he was standing there because he expected that someone would have to unfuck the situation Dike was expected to get Easy into. Dike was absolutely weeks into shell shock (what we call PTSD) by that point - besides likely being wounded at that point. He was honestly a good officer, but in the moment was beyond able to lead the company. Yet the series is told from the perspective of the men who were there, who only knew the moment. It's both honest and tragic that those telling the story should speak from their own point of view. Dike was not capable in that moment. He was heroic many other times.
Literally seconds after Speirs left him to come back to Easy, the leader of Item Company was mowed down by machinegun fire. Thankfully, someone else had been nearby to hear the new orders and was able to relay them around.

In fairness to Dike he was wounded in the shoulder during the assault, and had lead platoons in firefights effectively before, but struggled to lead an entire company. The one weakness of this series was that it was taken from stories men told Stephen Ambrose forty years after they happened, and some like Sobel and Dike had already passed, so their decisions remain a mystery, though most of the contempt for Dike came from the enlisted men, though some did come from Winters , who viewed him as incompetent as a Company commander and Compton whose judgment was implied to be biased toward the welfare of the men to the detriment of combat effectiveness.
There is no official record that Dike was wounded at Foy. Internet rumor. Dike DID abandon his men during the heavy shelling, which understandably infuriated Winters and the enlisted men.
Notice when Winters ordered Speirs to go in and relieve Dike, Speirs didn't even pause to listen, he was pretty much already running before Winters even finished his sentence.
Speirs did kill the POWs. At the time they were under orders to not take prisoners. Because they did not have the man power to guard the POWs or a secure place to keep them. The invasion was still underway. Speirs shot a drunk Sargent who pointed he weapon at Speirs while he was drunk. My hat is off to you. Most people do not tie what Speirs told Albert Blithe to Speirs's own actions.

Well, it's not just a clever name. Winters going in against orders, then sending LT. Speirs to relieve Dike, he more than put his money where his mouth is what he said to Blithe. In reality, Spiers did shoot a sargent, in self defense, when the drunk sargeant came at him with his gun. Whether or not he killed those POW's, I don't believe its been proven. But Winters believes it did, so I believe him.
In an interview held something like ten years after the initial release of BoB, Neal McDonough (Buck Compton) said that this was the episode that he had not yet watched, because of how intense it was.

Yea, they got the hell shelled out of in those woods. Whats worse is that it was a tree farm pre war so the shooting lanes were all super clear and easy to see.

"Hoobler went to shake the snow off his canvas [shelter half] and the gun went off in his pocket. This pistol didn't have a safety and Hoobler didn't have a holster." Lipton told the same story, adding "Heffron was one of the first ones to him. Babe said said Hoob seemed to know he was done for, that you could see the life running out of him." Don Malarkey's memory was different: "He had been fiddling with a Browning .45 . . . pistol--not a Luger as some thought--in his right hand pocket and apparently accidentally shot himself in the leg." Hoobler's Find a Grave entry states that "Hoobler was killed by his own weapon, not because he had been playing with it, but because it had gotten snagged on a piece of barbed wire."
Foxholes are safe to be in during an artillery barrage as it provide you shelter. The chance of getting a direct hit is 1 in a million. Muck and Penkala was just unlucky
The Battle of the Bulge was the most bloody battle for the US in WWII. 1 out of every 10 casualties in all services, in every theater in the War, were from the Battle of the Bulge. 10% of all losses is a lot.
The crazy thing is, alot of the insane and hard to believe storys that come out of shows like band and brothers, and on of my other favourits, Rogue Heros, is that they had to leave out the more unbelievable stories because they were worried that people wouldnt believe they we true. So spiers running through an AO to link up with the other company and then running back, isnt the craziest thing that soldiers in the allied forces did during the war. =)
Dike was shot and wounded on the charge into FOY that is the reason He stalled. Record showed that he received two Bronze Star Medals, one of which was for rescuing three wounded members of his company while under intense fire in Holland
But Dike was the favorite of Maxwell Taylor, the division commander. Taylor later rode all the way to the top -- he was one of President Kennedy's closest advisors. He was one of President Johnson's "Wise Men" who first advised him in 1967 to "stay the course" in Vietnam, and then in March 1968 reversed course, after the Tet Offensive was a catastrophe for the Communists. A careerist mediocrity, in my opinion -- unworthy of commanding the 101st. You can be sure he bent over backwards to cover Dike's ass and get him credit he didn't deserve.

I want to say Spier's run was toned DOWN to try and make it believable. It was longer and he was yelling at the Germans for their poor aim. It was also the breaking point for the Germans. After this it was trying to surrender to The American/British west not the Russian east. One of Buck's issues was the call to hold and not fall back was his. It was right, but that is not much comfort.
The situation portrayed here is EXACTLY WHY politics has no place on the battle field, Lt. Dike should NEVER have been put in command of ANY COMPANY, based on his "CONNECTIONS" Sobel was removed because Easy Company did not like or respect him, and some even wanted to "ACCIDENTALLY" wound or kill him while in combat in order to get another company commander, Lt. Spiers, although had a reputation, that may or may not be seen as desirable, he was respected immensely, and was cool under fire, and an exceptionally COMPETANT soldier and leader, so seeing winters in the middle of the battle, calling the most capable person he had to salvage an assault that had went sideways, shows just how good of a field commander Winters was, and after they had taken Foy, and a lot of POW's, it was apparent, Lt. Spiers was the right choice to be the C.O. of Easy company.
I don't understand why it took speirs to tell them to take out the machine gun in the building with grenade launcherrs....seems the ncoms would have had thst done right away.

141K American soldiers died in the European Theater of WW2. Twice as many as the Pacific. One of the great things that gave meaning to their sacrifice was the creation of the State of Israel. We should all remember that at this time.

Winters called to Speirs simply because he's the first officer he spotted.
Winters has said that Spiers was standing right behind him at the time, and that Winters thoroughly believed that Spiers made sure he was standing there because he expected that someone would have to unfuck the situation Dike was expected to get Easy into. My words, Winters would never have been so crude as to say “unfuck.” 😂

I believe the show did LT Dike dirty it’s understandable why due to easy company not like him or his command style. But earlier in the war dike was a competent and brave commander. On dday he lead his squad destroy machine guns and in Holland he was awarded the bronze star due to successfully carrying a wounded man to safety while under sniper fire while being wounded himself.
While at the battle of foy there are conflicting reports as to what happened to dike but whats the most probably thing that happened was he hit and was bleeding and thus going into shock. So he couldn’t command and thus broke down, Because after foy dike was rotated out and served in the army up till Korea as an honorable officer thought out his career.
While winter never was about to go out and lead his men he knew he had bigger responsibilities he just turned around and in his own words “picked the first officer he saw” and thus he choose spiers because he saw him first.
Dike was absolutely weeks into shell shock (what we call PTSD) by that point - besides likely being wounded at that point. He was honestly a good officer, but in the moment was beyond able to lead the company. Yet the series is told from the perspective of the men who were there, who only knew the moment. It's both honest and tragic that those telling the story should speak from their own point of view. Dike was not capable in that moment. He was heroic many other times.

Literally seconds after Speirs left him to come back to Easy, the leader of Item Company was mowed down by machinegun fire. Thankfully, someone else had been nearby to hear the new orders and was able to relay them around.

In fairness to Dike he was wounded in the shoulder during the assault, and had lead platoons in firefights effectively before, but struggled to lead an entire company. The one weakness of this series was that it was taken from stories men told Stephen Ambrose forty years after they happened, and some like Sobel and Dike had already passed, so their decisions remain a mystery, though most of the contempt for Dike came from the enlisted men, though some did come from Winters , who viewed him as incompetent as a Company commander and Compton whose judgment was implied to be biased toward the welfare of the men to the detriment of combat effectiveness.
There is no official record that Dike was wounded at Foy. Internet rumor. Dike DID abandon his men during the heavy shelling, which understandably infuriated Winters and the enlisted men.
Notice when Winters ordered Speirs to go in and relieve Dike, Speirs didn't even pause to listen, he was pretty much already running before Winters even finished his sentence.
Speirs did kill the POWs. At the time they were under orders to not take prisoners. Because they did not have the man power to guard the POWs or a secure place to keep them. The invasion was still underway. Speirs shot a drunk Sargent who pointed he weapon at Speirs while he was drunk.
My hat is off to you. Most people do not tie what Speirs told Albert Blithe to Speirs's own actions.
He actually killed prisoners on multiple occasions - and he wasn't the only one.

the prisoners on D-Day was true because they had no provisions for taking prisoners during their behind the lines operations.

In BoB reaction channels it's just poor form to drop names of survivors while the reactors aren't done watching. People are still dying left and right.

Well, it's not just a clever name. Winters going in against orders, then sending LT. Speirs to relieve Dike, he more than put his money where his mouth is what he said to Blithe. "Easily" one of my favorite moments of the series. That scene is stunning, every, single, time. Then when Buck's helmet hits the ground, it's as Earth shattering as the German artillery. Currahee ♠

In reality, Spiers did shoot a sargent, in self defense, when the drunk sargeant came at him with his gun. Whether or not he killed those POW's, I don't believe its been proven. But Winters believes it did, so I believe him.

In an interview held something like ten years after the initial release of BoB, Neal McDonough (Buck Compton) said that this was the episode that he had not yet watched, because of how intense it was.
I beg you to react to "We Stand Alone Together: The Men of Easy Company" After Band of Brothers. Its the war told entirely by the real men which we see glimpses of in the intros to episodes of BoB.

Yea, they got the hell shelled out of in those woods. Whats worse is that it was a tree farm pre war so the shooting lanes were all super clear and easy to see.
There is some disagreement as to the pistol with which Hoobler accidentally shot himself. According to Babe Heffron, it was a Belgian .32 caliber pistol that Hoobler took from the German he had killed, not a Luger. "Hoobler went to shake the snow off his canvas [shelter half] and the gun went off in his pocket. This pistol didn't have a safety and Hoobler didn't have a holster." Lipton told the same story, adding "Heffron was one of the first ones to him. Babe said said Hoob seemed to know he was done for, that you could see the life running out of him."
Don Malarkey's memory was different: "He had been fiddling with a Browning .45 . . . pistol--not a Luger as some thought--in his right hand pocket and apparently accidentally shot himself in the leg."
Hoobler's Find a Grave entry states that "Hoobler was killed by his own weapon, not because he had been playing with it, but because it had gotten snagged on a piece of barbed wire."
Ambrose's reporting in half way inbetween those two. He mentions the belgian pistol, and lack of safety, and that he would fiddle with it.
Yeah, this is the best episode of the series.

Foxholes are safe to be in during an artillery barrage as it provide you shelter. The chance of getting a direct hit is 1 in a million.

The Battle of the Bulge was the most bloody battle for the US in WWII. 1 out of every 10 casualties in all services, in every theater in the War, were from the Battle of the Bulge. 10% of all losses is a lot.
The crazy thing is, alot of the insane and hard to believe storys that come out of shows like band and brothers, and on of my other favourits, Rogue Heros, is that they had to leave out the more unbelievable stories because they were worried that people wouldnt believe they we true.
So spiers running through an AO to link up with the other company and then running back, isnt the craziest thing that soldiers in the allied forces did during the war. =)

Dike was shot and wounded on the charge into FOY that is the reason He stalled. Record showed that he received two Bronze Star Medals, one of which was for rescuing three wounded members of his company while under intense fire in Holland
But Dike was the favorite of Maxwell Taylor, the division commander. Taylor later rode all the way to the top -- he was one of President Kennedy's closest advisors. He was one of President Johnson's "Wise Men" who first advised him in 1967 to "stay the course" in Vietnam, and then in March 1968 reversed course, after the Tet Offensive was a catastrophe for the Communists. A careerist mediocrity, in my opinion -- unworthy of commanding the 101st. You can be sure he bent over backwards to cover Dike's ass and get him credit he didn't deserve.

In preparation for the 13 January 1945 attack on Foy, Belgium, E Company was attached to the 3rd Battalion, 506th PIR. Division Headquarters ordered the attack to begin at 0900 hours. During the assault, Carwood Lipton, at that time the company's first sergeant, described Dike as having "fallen apart." Clancy Lyall stated that he saw that Dike had been wounded in his right shoulder and that it was the wound, not panic, that caused Dike to stop. Dike survived the assault, and eventually returned to the rear in the company of a medic. Afterwards, he was transferred to 506th Regimental Headquarters to become an assistant operations officer. Dike then moved on to become, as a captain, an aide to General Maxwell Taylor, Commanding General, 101st Airborne Division. He later served in the Korean War.

I want to say Spier's run was toned DOWN to try and make it believable. It was longer and he was yelling at the Germans for their poor aim. It was also the breaking point for the Germans. After this it was trying to surrender to The American/British west not the Russian east. One of Buck's issues was the call to hold and not fall back was his. It was right, but that is not much comfort.
The situation portrayed here is EXACTLY WHY politics has no place on the battle field, Lt. Dike should NEVER have been put in command of ANY COMPANY, based on his "CONNECTIONS" Sobel was removed because Easy Company did not like or respect him, and some even wanted to "ACCIDENTALLY" wound or kill him while in combat in order to get another company commander, Lt. Spiers, although had a reputation, that may or may not be seen as desirable, he was respected immensely, and was cool under fire, and an exceptionally COMPETANT soldier and leader, so seeing winters in the middle of the battle, calling the most capable person he had to salvage an assault that had went sideways, shows just how good of a field commander Winters was, and after they had taken Foy, and a lot of POW's, it was apparent, Lt. Spiers was the right choice to be the C.O. of Easy company.
I don't understand why it took speirs to tell them to take out the machine gun in the building with grenade launcherrs....seems the ncoms would have had thst done right away.
