I saw Joe at Scummers on the Beach in Ft. Lauderdale for the Surfing tour in '87. He was freakin' amazing, seemed like every guitar player in the state was there and they spent the whole show with their jaws on the floor.
A love the rawness of this performance. To me an imperfect performance adds the element of achievability. A player as great as he is to make mistakes or a mistake “singular” helps me to believe I could attain this goal if I worked hard enough. This is not an easy piece. You know it’s difficult if Joe himself didn’t get it perfect.
he messes up his harmonic at 1:53 but i think that's the only time i've ever actually noticed it in one of his videos, way more consistent than i am with them lol
I remember when I was teaching him this song and I never thought he'd get it but I'm happy to see he's doing pretty well for himself. He still has a ways to go but I really think he's at least on an upward trajectory.
Duck Tales woo hoo 1..... You teaching him this song..Joe Satriani omg ...he is one of the best guitarr player i've ever heard ...and I have listen a lot...i was born in the 1979....and have listen to de purple , Rush , pink floyd, Nazareth and so on in my youth and im still just love guitarr solo...and also drum solo....all best to you..Eva from Gothenburg Sweden.
The best guitarists are the ones who add their own flair each time they play. No two performances are exactly alike, and they're showing the emotion that a guitar can show in the right hands. But because these personalized live versions aren't carbon copies of the studio version, people resort to saying the guitarist can't play their own song. Why?
Nig Nog You're right, because apparently all those live performances from Twilight Dementia and the new In The Line Of Fire DVDs are all faked. Take those for proof. Also, maybe you'd like some links to videos of their concerts? Or would you rather assume those don't exist, either?
Josh Sonon i find he probably has soo many tricks up his sleeve and song its a wonder he even remembers every little bit of music he originally recorded
Because nobody can take someone else's music, add to it, and make it better than it was. Only the original artist can throw in something new and still make sound good cuz they wrote it and they know what to do with it.
un grande o el mas grande de todos los tiempos´´el maestro de maestros en la guitarra.el es de esas personas que nacen unicas y nadie las puede igualar en lo que hace
would you rather be up yelling, or sit there, learning from what you see? it is a clinic, after all.. i play guitar and there's no way i'd miss an opportunity to learn something from one of the all time guitar greats
Americus Reed II It's a clinic at a college. But I feel you, Americus Reed II; that's a Pretty damn stiff crowd for the world's LIVING premier leading rock guitarist virtuoso. Satch will back me: Hendrix is the greatest.
He's said Jimi Hendrix is the greatest many times. He's his biggest inspiration. Find and watch enough Satriani clips on TH-cam -- you'll here him say it.
It puzzles me how some shallow minded people like to come on here and whine about how they don't like the music. If you don't like it, don't listen to it or watch it. It's not the music lovers fault that you people don't have the capacity to like different styles of music. If you can not enjoy and comprehend instrumental music from Concert "Classical" Music to Jazz, Blues, Fusion, etc. blame your own close mindedness and don't whine.
In response to maafa 1619. Yes, a very particular kind of noise that gets it's roots from early African American music aka THE BLUES. Keep spewing the hate M, you're only showing us your true stupid nature.
em 0:38 Satriani toca um harmonico com duas notas juntas!! Tenho uma Ibanez js 100 preta e tenho tentado tocar isso mas é bem difícil, precisa ter muita intimidade com o instrumento pra desenvolver essa tecnica.
Having "soul" doesn't mean playing "like a black person" or being "funky" or whatever it is you are trying to say. Having "soul" means connecting to the music on a deeper level. It means "feeling" every beat, every note, every lick, every riff. Different people experience that feeling differently. Just because one person doesn't move around EXACTLY like you think they should, doesn't mean they don't feel it. You can be a technical wizard on the guitar, and still make that deep connection.
That looks like an older Satriani guitar, much bigger body then the JS series. The Black Dog maybe? If it's the original one (even with different pups) + a different Marshall or Peavey amp from the recent ones, it means that he really wanted to sound as original as possible, and that's truly awesome, it's a huge tribute to the audience. You can see it sound way wildest than the current performances, and according to Joe, this song has this wild/uncontrolled tone a feel originally in the 80's.
Satraini I'm sure has studied Eddie Van Halen inside and out and when I first heard this back in 88' I could have swore it was a Van Halen instrumental, but It turned out to be this cat named Joe Satriani and the rest is history!!!
@bpguitarist7 Hey there. Sorry to hear you missed this one. We definitely send e-mails to everyone in the area to give the heads up about cool events, workshops, and seminars. If you're not getting our e-mails, give your Sales Engineer a call. Maybe we're sending them to an outdated e-mail address?
@AndreasSku93 You are not correct. The place for silence during a song is in your car or home. If you are at a concert it is your duty as a paying spectator to let the musician know you love his/her work.
@metachozoite I think it's due the mixing of it and also the tinny backing track. Had it been with live drums and bass etc.. joe would probably have the amp on 8-10 or so it gets more harmonics out and sounds a lot better.
He has "soul," simply because he has a great sense of rhythm, which translates into being able to write and play great melodies *with* dynamics, as well as the pyrotechnics. There is nothing wrong with composed parts. It's playing them so they *sound* fresh and improvised every time. I think he succeeds in that. I heard him in Boston last night. My only criticism was the "rumble" of the background musicians. I like him better here as a drum duo. I'd love to see a Satch/Vinnie duo
This guy has played this a million times, the 1 time he plays it and sounds a little diff people start whining, the fact you even ask why its not like usual questions your observation, he has NO band, he is going through a marshall thats set up a little heavy ended but this is really just the backing track contrasting the amp. if you need to cry just go watch a different version.
Of course there is. I hate this kind of stupid comments. Music affects our ear whether we want it or not. We hear a song and it stays in our mind. Music influences musicians. You know, there is a limited number of melodies and tunes you can compose on an instrument, so if you hear something and if it sounds similar to something else you've heard, it probably is. But even if the melodies are limited and tones are limited, if a musician makes a song that sounds great to me, then he's unique.
@FrodoBaggins44 They are stunned, and they show him the respect of being quiet during his wonderful artistic performance. People screaming at concerts are so annoying, it disturbs the music!
Adding to your comment (yeah I know it's 9 months old but what the hell)...of all the songs to point out "lack of soulful playing" he picked Satch Boogie. DUH....It's Joe soloing the whole time for the most part..He's not trying to be emotive...It's meant to be fun...If you want soulful check out Cryin, Cool #9, Rubina's Blue Sky Happiness, Ten Words and the list goes on...
@IbanezjemJSX To be fair though I have heard him say in interviews "I hope I get the pitch harmonic here" or something to that effect, as you can't actually see exactly where it happens on the guitar and then theres the thumb+flesh in the equation too. :P He played it pretty well otherwise though.
having soul and feeling is all about connecting to your audience and what you feel as an artist. If you think that black people are better guitarists...check your ears
LOL, look at the crowd at the 2:23 mark! They're nodding into sleep! While I respect Joe's dedication to the instrument, I don't think I'd be compelled to ever watch this again. On the other hand, there's Danny Gatton playing "Sleepwalk." Or Joscho Stephan's "Django's Tiger." I could watch those clips all day and still be moved by the performances.
its really sad watching everyone film and not watch a great show, a sad testament to the times
THis reminds me of a school talent show. If they say a word, you get expelled. So, you just quietly sit in awe of his awesome skills.
I saw Joe at Scummers on the Beach in Ft. Lauderdale for the Surfing tour in '87. He was freakin' amazing, seemed like every guitar player in the state was there and they spent the whole show with their jaws on the floor.

Joe is the ultimate guitarist... he's got the technical proficiency of Yngwie or Paul Gilbert mixed with the soulful melodic style of BB King!
He has 0% of the soul of bb King. Agree with your other points through
..the what of BB King?😳 Ionno🤔
His consistency is awesome. Perfect playing live
he messes up his harmonic at 1:53 but i think that's the only time i've ever actually noticed it in one of his videos, way more consistent than i am with them lol
You are right, but its very rare. Imagine if he was Kirk Hammett..
@@TheEpicLinkFreeman It was a pitch harmonic he just hit it on the wrong angel or didn't have enough thumb action 🤘🤘
That note he hits at 0:58 is awesome.
the harmonic scream at 0:38 is simply perfect!!!
Man he makes it look so easy, I just love watching him play. How can the audience just sit there????? Are they dead?
We owe this man SO much!
Man, this clinic seemed perfect. He played all of his good songs.
Joe's great live!
Master of the Masters of the guitars.
Unreal... He truly is a master
I used to freakin' love that album!!
I remember when I was teaching him this song and I never thought he'd get it but I'm happy to see he's doing pretty well for himself. He still has a ways to go but I really think he's at least on an upward trajectory.

I’m about five years too late but the original poster was being Hilariously sarcastic.
AWESOME!

Josh Sonon Watch a live Dragonforce performance and ask why again.
Nig Nog

Most sparkly hat ever!
No entiendo como el publico puede estar tan quito, mientras se presenta satriani!!!!
Just wonderful I really like some one who can play like that
Is that an audience? Or an Oil painting?
Great comment I agree
Americus Reed II It's a clinic at a college. But I feel you, Americus Reed II; that's a Pretty damn stiff crowd for the world's LIVING premier leading rock guitarist virtuoso.
Satch will back me: Hendrix is the greatest.
Derek Park I think Satch would probably say Ritchie Blackmore is the greatest, but I don't know.
He's said Jimi Hendrix is the greatest many times. He's his biggest inspiration. Find and watch enough Satriani clips on TH-cam -- you'll here him say it.
+Americus Reed II I'm 45...but I'd be standing up in my seat playing that good 'ol air geetar !!

That tone is awesome, not too much gain, just perfect really.
I love this Gt.

Nice! Black/Red/Purple colorway Fallen Troopers.

Great one ! Great !

Wow, excited crowd
I wish you all would make more announcements about this kind of stuff. I live right up the road and i had no idea about any of this.
I like how he messes up a little bit, it show even the Master can mess up a little here and there. Satriani ROCKS!!
Very cool, now I'm off fly fishing!: )
yeah. at last, some new talent shows up! I dig him!
@huyiy Because they sent out emails I guess? It wasn't promoted heavily, which I can understand because the sweetwater theater has maybe 300 seats...
LOVE IT
Awesome!!!
soul wot soul?
this man is guitar magik !!
Wow..that crowd is really swinging and into it...!! Either Joe did his setup in the wrong theater hall or these people bought the wrong ticket.
thats pretty awesome
Nicely put mate.
The best ever
2:25 ... WHAT A FUCKIN ROCKIN ASS CROWD.... THEY GO OFF !!!
Great point
yeaaaaaaaaahhh
How freaking cool would this be? Personal concert. Better than catching him in Guitar Center.
Satraini I'm sure has studied Eddie Van Halen inside and out and when I first heard this back in 88' I could have swore it was a Van Halen instrumental, but It turned out to be this cat named Joe Satriani and the rest is history!!!

0:40 when every guitar player in the audience decided to sell their guitars....
lol....including me... 😂😂
I sold mine on the opening pick slide !! 😭
yeah how did he do that screech
@randytauren
That may have been an accident.
He hit 2 strings there & that created the "repelling" harmonics.
@AndreasSku93 You are not correct. The place for silence during a song is in your car or home. If you are at a concert it is your duty as a paying spectator to let the musician know you love his/her work.
satrini es el maestro
So true!
It'd be great to have those backing tracks to practice his tunes with.
Always The JOE \m/
wanna have that guitar !
John-5 & Satriani are my only two favorite guitar players.
@metachozoite I think it's due the mixing of it and also the tinny backing track. Had it been with live drums and bass etc.. joe would probably have the amp on 8-10 or so it gets more harmonics out and sounds a lot better.

Agreed !
@CalebH50 its all freshhhh(; hes still a legend
@shoofercat Interesting... facts.... I'd like to find out more about this.. They must have been very young??
Killer!
holy crap! what was that... wow...
@FrodoBaggins44 They are stunned, and they show him the respect of being quiet during his wonderful artistic performance. People screaming at concerts are so annoying, it disturbs the music!

@SMBwings I think that's from Satriani teaching Vai :)
having soul and feeling is all about connecting to your audience and what you feel as an artist. If you think that black people are better guitarists...check your ears
No way ... the better sound of Joe is with the Marshall 6100 LM !!! ;-)
Showing why he is the best guitar player ever. Guitarists will be copying him for a thousand years.
trop fort ^^
@FrodoBaggins44 Haha :P
They're all sitting in awe ;)
This guy is not bad... he should make a record...
Im the dude head banging in the middle of the vid. It was awesome
Boogie Baby!!!!! :) :)
@HeroHunter15 One doesn't simply say satriani is my idol
I really like his tone here. anybody know what kind of amp/effects he's using?
I read that Vai was around 13 or 14 years of age..when Joe started teaching Vai. By 18 Vai was well on his way.
LOL, look at the crowd at the 2:23 mark! They're nodding into sleep! While I respect Joe's dedication to the instrument, I don't think I'd be compelled to ever watch this again. fallen footwear is great^^ you're able to do anything you want with 'em!
ooo nearly missed that harmonic!
@SMBwings He's not entirely dissimilar sounding to a slightly evolved Van Halen in this clip IMHO. Kind of bridging the gap between Vai and Van Halen.
The casual "I just walked off the beach" look.
