He's not hearing the drums in his ears. They were playing a drumless track for him and he just free-styled that whole thing without hearing it. His level of musical anticipation is INSANE, but you can tell he can't hear the actual drums because there's a few times you can see he realizes the feel changed but adjusts in like a split second. It's absolutely nuts. The level of musicianship is mind-blowing.

    • @stone5against1

And you can see his head stop bobbing and his eyes looking upwards as he's paying closer attention to what's being played before getting back in the groove.. especially when he's hearing the track with the drums and playing alongside it after his first/only pass at the song

I was almostb hopeless in music but had some talent on painting and graphics end even that artistic enviroment, it's hard to mimic some great artist and their style... In some of cases I though get close enough to fool even some professional artist with my works... On eguy who was a professional artist wanted to look my paintings up close and was abit baffeled when he realized I used the same technic and even the same style of marking my strokes and lines. But training to copy someone elses pieces, youeill began to realize their technic and then its gets to something quite natural to you... You do still have master in some degree what you are doing in order to pull that off. The best way usually is to give some time to reharse. but as soon as you get a grip on it, it changes to so much more easier... even the way of using brushes os pastell chalks or what ever. But the true geniuos are right on spot from the beginning.

I am not a drummer and know absolutely zero about drumming but always was drawn to the drums. Nothing more mesmerizing than watching someone just create magic on a kit, but you mentioned Larnell Lewis’s Enter Sandman rendition and let me just say that what impressed me the most was the “Active Listening” portion of the Drumeo set. Watching the “cogs” in his brain turning, then his hands and feet moving and bouncing as if he were writing the music on a sheet of paper. It was all just too beautiful to me. And this is coming from a layman. Someone who knows nothing about drumming so I can’t even imagine how powerful and moving watching all of this is to the drumming community. I am so grateful that I stumbled upon Drumeo and all these great drumming podcasts for all these incredible videos and content. And of course a f***** huge THANK YOU to the LEGENDARY Chad Smith for nailing The Kill and making that video Viral and introducing all the non drummers to Drumeo. 🙏🏻 And final thought….you shouldn’t have gave up drumming. Reason is he let's Flea fill in those beats with the bass that's why they have always compliment each other so well. And if you can tell he plays alot of his beats and his accent notes are aligned with what the singer is doing. Which is a simple but powerful way to really drive the lyrics and singing home.

I don't think they downplay how good musicians they are. It's just that they don't care about showing off. They play only what's needed for the song, and sometimes that's very little. I often see people playing songs like Californication in a more complex way and it sounds worse than the original which is intentionally stripped down to it's basic components to sound precisely the way it does.

I think I actually saw in an interview he did that his bass drum ghost note habit gets him in hot water with studio techs and what not all the time, good catch!

And as far as his foot pedal style, I do it too and have had drum teachers tell me the same. I tell them it works for me so...

He’s playing along to a drumless version that most drummers listen to once or twice while making notes and then play along to it for the video… CS just went ahead and started playing

The Larnell comparison is off since he listened to the full instrumental including the drums before going at it with a drumless track, while Chad listened to a drumless track and played along simultaneously to his first listen.

You missed the point. He is not hearing the drums. He made that up as he went, other guys on these drumeo-challenges listens to the full track, maybe multiple times, and then tries and replicate it.....chad just goes with it and HE F*CKIN NAILED! Absolute legend! Best guy who ever did that challenge, period!

It literally tells you in the very beginning of the video he can't hear the drums but you don't figure it out until after you have "ended" your video. Amazing. This is the quality of content stealing I love.

Some people like to do reactions blind and watch the video for the first time while reacting and some people react to a video they prewatch so they don't have to focus on the video in the background. I see you did a mix of both. And you know exactly what I'm referring to.

I have to agree with others. If you read the bottom of the start and paid attention, he wasn't hearing any drums. I'm a choreographer and you get thrown into things. All he heard was guitar and vocal. Not so hard to figure out but he went completely insane with this. It's one thing to count in threes, but also to guess where to come back in. Just amazing. The bridge is when he really slayed, I never saw that coming HAHAHA.:

What you can't do, Teach. Probably a lot of teachers SUCK at playing the drums because they probably aren't even drummers themselves at least not famous drummers.

How many drummers here also actually ‘Learn’ new music on your steering wheel ? (and gear shifter if your ride has manual transmission)
*I used to keep the bottle cap from every Yoo-Hoo I drank in the glovebox of my ‘86 Jeep CJ7 cuz after beating the metal shift pattern emblem outta my shifter knob, I popped in a Yoo-Hoo bottle cap! 😄 They fit perfectly, but only lasted a week or two, so I kept plenty of spares on hand!!! 😉😎👍🏼🥁

Larnell is great BUT he got to listen to the track WITH the drumline, whereas Chad didn't. Of course still incredible to nail it after such a sort listen, but I imagine if Chad had listened to the track with the drumline he would have 99% nailed it.
