"Do you really know what you like?" That is a funny question and a very relevant one. For example, I used to think I loved burgundy... and I do. But I actually only like the color itself and the mood it creates in images. I hate it in decor and I don't like it in most clothing. It is a wonderful color in the way it feels; seeing it in nature and paintings gives me a rich and cozy feeling or, in darker subjects, a feeling of depth and enclosure. It is all about perspective and, as you said, really thinking about it.

I felt so seen when you referenced the Dune art book in the portion about books that aren’t necessarily good. I preordered it and was so excited to learn about the decisions that went into designing the world and I couldn’t have been more disappointed. The concept artists who worked on the film were online sharing these incredible pieces and insights that weren’t featured in the book at all! While I’m glad I took the chance on buying it your advice to see if an art book can be outclassed by finding the same images online really applies here.

Right now, the only art books I’m aiming to collect are books that will help strengthen my fundamentals, even when I’m not in an art related class. In other words, I’m building my own art curriculum. I recently bought a book on ink rendering to help me get back my momentum (and confidence) to expand my abilities with the pen. I also recently bought (as of now that I’m typing this) a book to help strengthen my lighting and coloring overall. Long story short, I was mostly self-taught with not a lot of guidance until I got to college, so for a while I was left to my own devices and kinda wandering aimlessly, which in turn gave me information overload, and mind you I have other endeavors beyond being an artist (also aspiring mangaka). So until I get more consistent training and coaching in this part of my life, like how I’m used to receiving as an athlete, I’m only going for books that not only inspire me, but teach me

5:44 I like how the wall occupies a lot of the image, and frames the specific part of the view the artist wanted to paint. it creates a surprizing decentering of the area of interest. I believe it was important to the artist that the branches in the foreground came out of the edges, and I like this effect. the slight strip of red right above the horizon emphasize the center line. in fact two gradients frame the top and bottom of the landscape.

This advice is amazing; after having an intense art block I wanted to return to character designing and was struggling at first; admittedly I was refusing to look up references because A) it's an easy distraction (personally) and B) I couldn't find what I was looking for.
But then I started to analyze people's faces (and art!) by comparing what I saw in real life to artists that I look up to, I could identify what I enjoyed about the facial features of a being and later found it way easier to illustrate and conceptualize these characters from imagination. Thanks for the thorough advice!

    BAHAH the ending 😂
This reminds me, I’ve become friends with some older artists (who have been painting for 50+ years) and one of my favorite things I’ve heard from them is that art is really just a way for you to learn to see. When people don’t indulge in some form of creativity, they won’t know what inspires them and aren’t able to enjoy things to the fullest. You don’t have to create art, just learn to appreciate why it stands out to you.
(Really like how you said ‘learning to like something is a skill’-I guess I like that because it’s so simple and applicable haha)
I’m going to try this with art books! I actually do this with my fav graphic novels, definitely want to dive deeper into the WHY 🕺

My favourite artbook is the Splatoon artbook bc it is richly filled with concepts and notes on what the artist was going for. I just received the Persona 5 artbook too which has useful value studies and 2D references for 3D artists and animators which is helpful reference for design a complex character made up of different parts or mechanisms. Notes from the artist for every character and their design are immensely helpful to me

Tbh I wouldn’t call it stealing as that has a negative connotation to it, even though it might be the correct term.
It’s more like “collecting.” Your meant to collect all your favorite tiny elements from other various artists and then meld them together into your own style.
Thus your art style becomes a unique collection of other styles, and since you’re the only one with that specific collection it’s your style!
While stealing is more akin to tracing to some and may give off the impression your meant to swap whole styles and copy them which is not unique.

9:25 I always thought this was 'plagarism', and by 'stealing' what I wanted I would end up in the centre of an internet drama opprobrium that would ruin a new art career. Everytime I would find art/anything I'll like I'd be afraid to copy incase when I did 'original' work it looked like a 'copy'. I would be super frustrating to see artists and illustrators talking about artists that inspired them, but I'm like 'How?!' How did you use their influence *without* sitting down to copy?
It's really nice to see a successful and financially independent artist be really transparent with their process. Thank you for this.

Yeh am a super guilty about buying too many artbooks over the years- now I limit how and why I buy: buy as a “fan” (limited to only a handful of artists- if I add a new artist I have to take one off), buy as “reference”- use imagery to help/guide whatever art am going to do (like artbook on world war 1 tanks or megaman artbook cuz have a commission on doing a piece of that), and then buy as “how to”- has to have some direct steps or tangible visual/written processes on how the art is made… it isnt a perfect system but has really reduced what and how much I buy🤷‍♂️

It's really weird. I guess artbooks just don't work like we would like them to. You don't go through them and "finish" them. They fall into your hand once every 5 years and you'll look at one and two pages specifically... the rest of the time, they make your place better through their sheer unread mystery (umberto Eco: The Best book is the one you haven't read). Also, omg the binding! The paper!

I only bought 1 artbook before (still keep it) it was 100% Japanese and I don’t understand the painting process at all lmao, that part looks like a digital art tutorial for me, I think I’m more into concept art book from animation and anime studios but I decided not to spend more on buying any books lol

I have been trying to stop buying artbooks mindlessly. My last 4 trips to japan i have brought a ton of books that are just sitting there in my bookshelf... There have been times when i buy the same book twice... I really need to use them and consume them the rught way

Pros of being broke is that it forces you to make crucial decisions on what to get (slight cope)

It can be so easy to get carried away with art books! I know I have my fair share of unread ones.

@@ChromaMoma thanks to this video I might need to bring some books from the shelf to the desk and force myself to truly read and analyze them. Thanks for the wake up call video

Art books… the heavy hardcore IRL brain candies. Some even become so obscure that they require a real curator’s taste. The limited productions by indie publishers, books signed by the creators and numbered.
Oh, oops this became a different vid all together 😂

If you have a public library near you, please use it. It’s a great way to browse to find what you do/don’t like without having to spend a lot of money. 😊

What you said at the end might have been very useful. But honestly in 11 minutes I don’t need that much promotion and that many ads. It’s disrespectful of my time. I honour your creativity and you need/desire to make money but I also have more respect for myself and my friends time and attention to put up with so many attempts to part me from mine. Just thought you might want to know why at least one of your interested viewers actually clicked off after the the second mid-roll ad break which was after the paid promotion and decided not to share the video and also, not to subscribe. 😢
