    This is not a Fall garden plan! This is the Wild Floridian garden kick off for the '23-'24 year! So many good ideas to start the juices flowing, get the overwhelming projects chunked, prioritized, and underway or scheduled, all in the comfort of A/C. I haven't done anything for fall yet, but seeing the roadmap gives me clarity.
    Love the coneflowers in the background and the butterflies circling, like they knew they were the stars of the channel. You and Ben are a perfect garden duo; love how you talk and plan things through, execute, and review (it doesn't hurt that you two are adorable together even doing messy summer garden work).

    I just started some Fall seeds on Sunday. Mostly herbs, tomatoes, and flowers. I ordered a Leaf style Greenstalk (all Terracotta planters are 35% off) for planting my salad greens and herbs inside my screen enclosure. (The stuff that won't need pollinators.) I have my seed starting area in the garage. I have some grow lights on a surge protector that has a timer on half and always on the other side. We used soil blocks in 1020 trays. I can't wait to get started! We are in South/Central Lake County FL and have a large in-ground garden, a food forest, and greenstalks. So many spaces and still figuring out what does best where and what we like to eat.

    I got a pack of tiny jewelry zip bags and put my seeds in it before putting it back in the seed packet. I accidentally left one outside during a downpour and the packet outside was ruined but the seeds inside were safe. Highly recommend if you're a klutz like me

    Hi, I am having a problem with my 2 native firebushes. The leaves on both plants are curling upwords on the sides. It's not the aphids, I do periodically have problems with them but they make the leaves curl in the opposite direction in a different way and I'm always checking and taking care of them immediately.
    Both of these plants are very young and still in their 3 gallon pots. I haven't planted them yet because I've been moving them around to try to find the best spot for them. Originally I thought they would be okay in all day sun (literally all day). But they seemed not to be doing that great and then someone told me that it's too much sun. I now have them each in different spots. They both get about six hours of Sun each, but one of them gets Morning Sun and the other one gets afternoon sun. However they both seem to be doing the same thing with the curling leaves.
    Both of these plants were very "homely" looking when I got them from the nursery, but they were the only ones they had and I really wanted native firebushes. They are definitely doing better than they were before but I'm not sure what the curling leaves is about?

    • @WildFloridian
      @WildFloridian  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmmmmm 🤔 My gut is saying put them in the ground. Most in my neighborhood get a little shade but there are some that get full sun. They have deep roots to survive stressful times of the year. My bet is get them in the ground and they will take off.

    I just downloaded your planner! Looking forward to having it help me and my daughter who both have executive function and planning challenges. I think it’s going to help a lot. I’ve done great with native plants for native bees (I am the founder of the Florida native bees fb group) but I’ve struggled with food gardening and your videos have been sooooo helpful. We have a poinciana we planted 7 years ago before we switched to native gardening and debated taking it down but it’s our only tree in the back yard for now so we just keep the side branches heavily trimmed. And last year we planted a false tamarind under the side of it and will more heavily cut the poinciana back at that time. Maybe that gives you some ideas. Keep up the great work!
    Oh and I planted my Seminole pumpkin way too late :( and it’s still running across the yard about 20’ out now but it’s only just got its first bloom but nothing otherwise. Should I just let it keep going amd hope for the best for this year and start earlier next year?

    • @WildFloridian
      @WildFloridian  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m in that group!!! I’m trying to learn more about our native bees! Thanks for your thoughts on the Poinciana. I think we’re taking it out. And yes, just leave the Seminole Pumpkin. They will run and once they get to a spot they like or the weather turns just a little… you’ll see it start flowering. Mine isn’t flowering now (just for comparison).

    I've been growing seedlings in my Aerogarden (similar to the LetPot) for several years now - tomatoes, jalapeños, habaneros, and other hot pepper varieties have worked really well. I cut the plastic holder so I can easily slip the peat cone with the plant and the rootball without damaging things too much. I clean the holders really well and reuse them. Maybe this August I'll try cold weather crops in my Aerogarden, I have 6 slots so plenty of opportunity. It's not overwhelming and I get good germination.

  • @johnliberty3647
    @johnliberty3647 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    How I handle seedlings outside. I put them under the understory plants. I also have tropicals in pots that I have to bring inside a greenhouse in winter. I start peppers and tomatoes right in the giant pots with my tropicals. The plants I grow seedlings under will slow down the rain and filter the sun.

    Great information. One question though. When exactly is it best to start the seedlings for cool weather crops? This is still not clear to me. I don’t want to start them and have our Florida heat destroy them.

    • @WildFloridian
      @WildFloridian  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For central and north Florida you can start in September but October will be more ideal. BUT this year is hotter so we’ll have to watch and see. The thing to really watch is bug populations. If you have a lot of butterflies, do you see the amount starting to drop? Right now focus on getting all the supplies. I’ll be keeping up to speed in the monthly what to plant videos and once the kids are on school I’ll be adding some community posts and other stuff to help keep us on track

    What does it mean when plants get leggy? I've heard it several times but haven't heard the explanation of what it is and why it makes your plant unproductive

    • @WildFloridian
      @WildFloridian  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Good question! Leggy means they start to stretch towards light which gives them a long thin stem that isn’t great for supporting whatever fruit/veggie you are going to grow. If the (let’s say tomato) plant can’t support the tomato you may have cracked stems that will cause the tomato to fail or the plant will collapse and all your tomatoes will be on the ground which makes them more likely to be eaten by bugs and rot.

      Technically a flexterian… We eat vegetarian 97%+ of the time. But we eat a nice steak from time to time and have turkey during the holidays and eggs here and there. We eat burritos and curry and soup and falafel pitas and lots of stuff. More dishes inspired by tropical diets.
