What I love most is that you don't assume that every person has your ability to bring a large panel home, afford this or that. You bring it down to a level for almost everyone and that's great. Gardening should be for all of us. Thanks for the great video. Your garden is lovely!
Thank you so much for the video on vertical gardening . I have a limited space and I am a novice gardener so your video was an absolute godsend for me . I am still learning but I find your videos to be so helpful thank you for taking the time to do them
You will never know the amount of stress you've saved me. I'm trying to grow all sorts of edibles in a 3'x8' space with no money, experience, or guidance. They said it wasn't possible, but I did it! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
Same! 4x10 here, and I sucessfully grew tomatoes, cucumber, green beans, bell peppers, carrots, beets, coriander and butternut squash! Ok the squash kinda went crazy and is clearly out of the garden, but still! Try some bamboo sticks and regular cotton thread. You can create good support for cucumbers that way 😊 How did your garden go this year? What did you plant?
This makes me happy! I learned to grow vertically on a 5x8 apartment balcony. It's looking like growing your own food is going to be a necessity in the coming months. Wishing you the best!
It didn't go very well last summer because it was so hot, but the summer before I grew strawberries, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and acorn squash though they didn't get very big.
I started watching this thinking “It’s pretty long, I’ll just watch it for a minute or so...” Then I got so captivated by your beautiful plants and thorough, thoughtful information that I watched the whole thing! This was lovely and helpful, thanks!
Hey Jesse, I know that this is an old video but you can also do a trellis in the "inground area " with a short section of a cattle panel attached to 2 fence post with the other side on the ground. ( like half of an A-frame). Face it so the high side faces the morning sun . Grow a vining crop like cucumbers or melons up the cattle panel and grow lettuce and spinach underneath. This technique allows me to grow both lettuce and spinach in the heat of the summer. I have also had success with cilantro using this type of trellis. Happy Gardening!
How could a 20 minute video be interesting? This is how. You did an amazing job. This is my first video of yours that i have seen and you can bet i will watch all of your videos. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Want to hear something crazy? When I was younger my Dad bent those cattle panels into cylinders for tomato cages which I thought was wild considering the difficulty, but they quite literally will last forever. 10/10 tip on using those.
in the past, I know a person who gardened on a very small veranda. 1 tomato plant, one cucumber, two beans, and some lettuce, onion, parsley, and basil on the bottom of the pots. fertilized them with scrabs from the kitchen and had a great supply of these vegetables till winter. yes, vertical gardening is the most productive way to garden where possible.
Thank you for all you guys do. I found your channel about 6 months ago when I had four raised beds I hadn’t used in two years because I’d been so unsuccessful and had 2 beautiful babies. Now my kids are 2 and 4 and they have their own boxes, I have 7 boxes, and just recently added 2 cattle panel arched trellises on Saturday. Everything is thriving and I always get complements on my garden now. I’m writing all this to say THANK YOU!!! You and Jeremiah have been the biggest influence in me restarting my garden. Thank you for using the gifts God gave you to not just spread your garden knowledge but also to spread God’s love. I pray you and your family are blessed beyond measure. Thank you for all the hard work you do and the love you give.

This was the first video I watched of yours. It is so glorious to remember your Arkansas garden in the middle of winter and while you’re building a brand new one in the Carolinas. I haven’t missed a single video in 2 years! This video was the beginning of it. Thank you for your continued growth and for bringing us along!
So much nicer Than the silly repetitive " hi guys". I just cannot stand that hi guys anymore and 99 percent of people seem to start their video's like that 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
I literally said the exact same thing when I encouraged her to watch Jess! You know that she is just incredible, the way she can grab your attention, show so much heart and teach you in such an endearing way. I just love watching her. 😍
Another reason for growing up: it can do double duty as shade in the hot months! We've built our main trellising to shade out the eastern side of the house, where most of the bedrooms are, to give us some relief from the excessive Aussie heat here during summer- a great space to let summer chokos, snake beans, passionfruit, and tomatoes go as far up as they want, and we benefit hugely in many ways. I love getting multiple benefits from small investments!
Ha have plants growing upside out of hanging baskets for the same reason ! J planted sun lovers to block the hot summer sun from toasting out apartment
Who else has been lurking and wanting a garden for years but just never made the effort until 2020 👋 I've always wanted a fruit and vegetables garden but I legit kill all of my indoor house plants. I can take care of my mom's plants just fine but all of mine die.
Jess did the work to make a huge garden and then people started contributing to it. "Build it and they will come" took on a whole new meaning for me today. Amazing
I took a single bed mattress from the curb during council clean up; I cut away all the material and padding to repurpose elsewhere and used the metal spring skeleton to hook to my fence as a trellis 😍 free and worths brilliantly!
I did that too! Then my husband had a flash of genius and suggested we cut the spring frame into strips lenghtwise (two springs wide) to make poles for climbing plants in stead of entire panels. So we did and put the strips on 3meter (9ft?) wooden posts painted in pastelly blues and they look so funny, like stacks of owls up a pole! 😂😂😂😂😂 But plants LOVE climbing up mattress springs, regardless of if they're used as panels or poles! The tomatoes pretty much supported themselves when the leaves grew into the springs. 👌👌👌
We also use our fences as trellises. Anyway I can go up to maximize growing, we do it. I recycle T-shirts to make string. We use old things for trellises. I think it makes the garden interesting and artistic to try to repurpose whatever is available. We live on a cleared acre of 7 acres of forest. We use lighter pine (hard) as T-posts sometimes and we use sticks for ladders tying off with T-shirt string or cut plastic grocery bags into string. We had no money to start so we composted our leaves, sticks, and clippings plus kitchen waste and used that to grow in while utilizing the above to make the trellises. For raised beds, we used felled logs to border and pilled leaves inside to grow. There are all kinds of ways to get started on very little or no money at all.
How?!!! HOW do you know so much? Did you study or is it because you taught yourself, spoke to people and read books? It’s so incredible your wealth of information
Every time I share pictures of my garden where I'm growing vegetables vertically, everyone is shocked. I've had such great results! Thank you for sharing, I loveeeeeee watching all your videos! Lots of
I love the concept of cattle panels..What I have been able to use successfully is five foot fencing leftover from perimeter fence job. Good for plants in pots . Make circle out of fencing and pots in in circle inside. Protects from chickens and plants climb up fencing. Tin snippers and hand tool to connect ends. Not hard for an 78 year old to do.
Your videos help me so much. I was raised on a farm and I loved helping my parents and neighbors with their gardens. Fast forward 30 years and I am trying to garden again because I now have a country home with a lot of land. I have some spine problems so the kind of gardens I can plant are limited now. I found your channel, by chance, and like I said, your videos have helped my tremendously! I am learning a lot. And I agree with the person that said you should have your own T.V. Show. You are very down to earth and have a wealth of knowledge about plants.
The background sounds like you're in North Carolina. :) Thank you for the amazing examples of how to "grow up". I love the idea of planting squash, but my available space has really never allowed it. I'm totally doing it this year!!
When I was a kid, I remember being shown how to use the library to find things. I felt like I had just been given the backbone of my education. That’s how it feels listening to your videos. You give so much useable information, but you also remind us how to think! We are so lucky! And so are your kids! Thank you!
I found you a year ago and you have changed my life! I used cattle panels last year and did well. I am adding alot more this year. In fact I am building a greenhouse from them. It is not just the panels that make a difference. You are one of the most soothing people I have ever heard. Thank you for sharing your peace as well.
You are so smart and you throw off comments (e.g., pole beans are indeterminate and produce more,) that are so informative and I learn a lot from you! Thanks.
Hello! I want to tell you that this video is a wonderful resource for the beginning gardener. You have a very engaging manner of presenting the information - and there is a LOT of good information in this video. I'm a Farm-to-Fork caterer with a 30-year history of sourcing local and regional products for my menus. This year, I plan to do a sizeable amount of the production myself. You make it look do-able. Thanks so much and best of continued good fortune!
I love the way you explain everything in detail! For a person my age w/knee, back etc. problems this is fantastic, so simple to harvest! I have a condo w/limited space in my patio, now I realize I can have a variety of things to grow. Thank you for giving us such a fine video, please keep it up ♥
Bamboo is a popular landscape plant and is great for making trellises and staking up plants. One of my favorite things as a kid was my Aunt's teepees that were covered with beans, peas, cukes, or melons. Lay in the cool shade with a book and munch fresh veggies! What a life.
Please do not encourage people to plant bamboo without mentioning that it's extremely invasive and hard to get rid of. It can quickly expand far beyond what someone may anticipate. If you want to grow it and have the space, that's fine, but read up first, and never plant it near a lot line where it will invade your neighbor's property.
mooster47 Not a problem is you choose a non invasive bamboo - “Clumping bamboo "will not spread" it only springs new canes from within and around the base of the clump. Shorter and new shoots appear closer to the mother culms. This bamboo is fantastic for hedging, garden features and it also looks great in a decorative pot.”
Just thought I would share two alternative “trellis” ideas 1. Large shoe rack secured wit rebar posts and 2. wire cd case also secured with rebar.” Foun at Good Will for about $4.00 each Also found 2 spring mattresses set at side of road fo free “
I searched a few videos before seeing yours, and as I did I thought: "I'd love a video that covers all sorts of trellises and concisely, showing them all in one video, how to, what I can grow..." YOU DID IT! And now I've subscribed. I wanna punch anyone that gave this a thumbs down...those should be erased. And you ARE indeed adorable and fun to watch and listen to. :) Thank you! Beautiful garden...and I definitely think yours is "fancy" in its own home-grown, random-trellis way. My style too, to find random free things and keep things as cheap as possible and make THAT beautiful. Anyway...cheers. Can't wait to watch more of your videos...
I heard a lady at a garage sale asking for bikini tops or bras to support cantaloupes ... wouldn't you love to see that garden! (I'm sure it would kill my neighbors, or I might do the same thing!)
Hah that’s amazing. I love how creative people get. That’s the cool thing about gardening... it teaches us to be a little less perfect and go with the flow :)
@@vikkistorey1911 Yep and if you need more, the Salvation Army here has one day when things are sixty nine cents and on Family Day, half price. I think bloomers could also be used but I have not had anything grown vertical yet. I will this year. So creative using an arch. I have very little sun to grow veggies so I will do this. The trick is getting the cow panels delivered. LOL My garden spot Is off the road and up twenty stairs. But wow, a lot can grow on a arched trellis, at least enough stuff for my use. I don't eat as much squash but will have to now.
I went to the local mattress recycle plant and got 25 wooden frames which match and look like the far expensive option sold in stores...and they were free!
Hi, mattress recycle plant for 25 wooden frames? Sorry, do you mean the bed with frames that you put outside for the garden? Correct? Can you show me the photos what look alike and how you set up? I wonder how. Thanks
@Joanna Fritz you can NOT attach a photo on TH-cam. They would have to give you like their Instagram or something since most creators don't allow weblinks in their comment section on videos
Thank you so much for your presentation. My wife, and I had given up on gardening this year because of last years disaster. Last year I had free roaming chickens, and wild rabbits. however the coyotes took care of my chickens. Our budget is low, so you gave me some ideas that should work for us, and I'll bet the weeding was much easier too. So thanks again please give us more tips. Respectfully Marion Page
Weeding can become a painful issue. We suggest cardboard around your plants, along rows. It breaks down eventually, but with so many delivery boxes these days, ask your neighbors.
Same here. I had a field rat that climb to my 5 fl balcony and chomped down on my greens and tomatoes. They even ate the peppers when all the other vegetables were gone. I gave up last year but have come back strong this year. I'm not sure if the field rats are still around but I intend to put out traps this time just in case. If they attack my sprouts, its all over for this season. Two years ago my goal was to grow tomatoes and peppers. I accomplished both and even moved on to grow several giant cabbages when the weather got cooler. My goal for this season is to grow a single honeydew, a cantaloupe, and a watermelon (vertical) on my small balcony -- I also may replant a couple of hot peppers. If can grow the melons, no one can ever offer any excuse for not having a garden. Just don't give up, and good luck.
~~~... My friend I can tell by the comments people love the way you put together your videos. Your homestead looks just lovely and your voice comes across very nice. I enjoy hearing your children in the background it is the sound of life as we all view your garden growing. ... GOD'S LOVE and JOY I just love your show and family...
I envy your panels! Another video I saw arched one minus 2 feet on one end to get a spiked end? Anyway, he arched in. middle and put in his tomato raised bed. I love this girls attitude and raised beds!!
I've been growing cucumbers on a couple of trellises for the past two years, and the yield is tremendous. I live in a Co-Op Seniors building, so it's great that people an easily pick a cucumber, without having to bend down. I'm going to try the same for the tomatoes, this year. Thanks for the great vid!
I posted this about the livestock panels under a comment but perhaps it deserves its own "space." There are four different types of livestock panels, different heights and different size holes - cattle, hog, pig, horse. I buy cattle panels because they are taller (wider for the trellis) and have less wire than horse panels which have smaller holes meaning more wire per panel (and more expensive because of the extra wire). The best place to buy them is, of course, farm supply stores and watch for them to come on sale. Locally, Wilco puts them on sale twice a year. If you are going to get several, talk to the manager to see if you can get a discount. When I bought ten, they gave me a discount. I also had them deliver them to me; the discount paid the delivery fee. I had hauled two before in the pickup and felt it was well worth the money to have the ten delivered.
These panels are going to drive me to drink. I need like 12 of them, so hauling in a pickup isn't really feasible. None of the places I have found around me deliver. I am thinking renting a uhaul may be my only option.
Alicia Payne you can do 3-4 at a time in a truck. Lay the cattle panel down flat right behind the truck, put the tailgate down and slide one end of the cattle panel into the bed to the back of the bed. Now pick up the other end of the panel and push the panel into a big U shape, you’re basically folding it like a trellis in the back of your truck. I’ve done 4 at the same time. Make 3 trips.
Andrew Kenseth I appreciate the advice. I finally found someone with a 18’ trailer I could borrow and I just went ahead and bout 25 so I shouldn’t need to haul any more.
Just came across this video and this was the most informative video I have seen. I really appreciate how you gave so many examples of what things could grow vertically on and how much trellises could cost and alternatives. Thank you
Cattle panels are my favorite but when I didn't want to spend that much on trellis material I bought concrete reinforcement panels for for a few dollars each. These come in different gauge wire. They are rusty but that just adds to their charm under a green crop. I now use cattle panels for the sides and bend the cheap light reinforcement panels over the top for archways.
Our son worked at the place where the cattle panels are made. He got them on a discount price for 10.00 each. SCORE!!!! We love these for so many things. Your garden is so beautiful. I loved this video.
Great video! I love the encouragement to find inexpensive resources. I put up a fence around our garden to keep the dogs from laying in and playing in my in-ground beds. The fencing was used and free, and we reused t-posts and wood salvaged. I put beds all along the inside and used them all for climbing/trellis friendly veg like tomatoes, cucumber, beans and Malabar spinach. And since the dogs are close the deer don't come nibble. Also, I saw a pretty cool video where a lady had some old wire rack shelves in the garden. She planted spaghetti squash at the base and it climbed. When the squash got heavy she just pushed in onto the wire rack! Too easy!
🙋🏼♀️ you are such a treasure passing along all of your experience to those around you. I am unable to do all of these wonderful things because of my health now . So I can watch you vicariously with happiness. With the garden that love built 🕊🐥🐣🐰
I love to garden and have been doing it for a minute. But I moved to another state and wanted some new ideas. Stumbled across this video and I am soooo happy I did! Thank you for taking us to the store with you. I get intimidated sometimes at these types of stores and I feel more confident now :) Thank you, friend!
Thought for you: What if you build one of you trellis arches and install a planter box at the top, so the plants that don't want to climb, could instead wave down the trellis.
Thank you for this! My garden is small, in fact, right now it is just a few pots, but I aspire for garden greatness. 😆 I think vertical would be the way to go for my limited space.
divineflygirl when I had a balcony and limited light I stapled chicken wire up (temporary) and put pots at the bottom. In the fall winter and spring I put twinkle lights and ornaments up.
I loved this. I am going to add trellis to my raised beds!! I am so excited! Thank you!! I recommend looking at your local scrap/recycling center! I get all of our t-post for $2 a piece. The office lady has my name for when they come in! They sometimes have cattle pannels as well!
There is a diff between cattle and goat panels. Cattle panels are $20 for 16' x 4'. Goat panels are same length and height but the squares are all same size and smaller and they are $40 each. Cattle panels have two rows at bottom closer together. Goat panels are all 4 x 4 squares.
After growing a truck patch garden all my life, I'm older now, vertical garden works for me, and I live the beautiful, and I still get enough produce to put up, I plant now for beauty too, but not fancy, I make, and buy things at fleamarkets, your garden is so pretty. God Bless.
Love your video's. We moved into town after selling our mini farm. Small town lot is a challenge, we now use the vertical space to grow. I'm amazed how much we can grow. Thank you, Blessings
I just found you..your channel..OMG it's like Magick!..I'm just starting into my second "true" gardening year. I love MI for his style, James Pergioni for my BTE style, now you my friend..soo grateful. I really like these three different styles in different areas of my small, less than an acre gardening venture. I thank you for all you do..
Just wanted to let you know that I follow your instructions, and made a huge garden with arches. It worked out GREAT. I planted a mixture of spaghetti squash, yellow and green zucchini, buttercup squash, pole beans...and climbing nasturtiums. It was absolutely beautiful and grew a ton of food. I found I did not have to use any extra support for the (sometimes huge) spaghetti squash, I simply trained the end of the vines through the wire a bit each day. I really appreciate your help with this arch garden! Relatively cheap to build, and looks like it will last forever!
I found your channel yesterday and I've been binge watching all your videos. You give off such a great and genuine vibe/energy. We are in the process of buying a home on 5 acres. You're living a dream I've had since I was a little girl.. I'm gleaning so much information and inspiration from you and your garden. I cant wait to get into our new home and finally turn my dream to reality. Thank you so much.
It is Divine intervention that I found your channel. After having acres to garden from 1999-2012 I am getting started again on a 22-30 backyard of my small town, townhouse. I have a 6 foot chain link surrounding the back yard and was literally just trying to decide how to grow blackberries and grapes up the fence and somehow arboring them to a cage coming off my raised, permaculture salad bed. I used the stumps of an old tree to raise the bed and used the larger limbs as the bottom layer of the bed after a tree company who was supposed to bring me free mulch instead dumped the entire, 80 foot white oak tree they took down and cut up into sections. So I took lemons and made lemonade. LOL I am going to learn so much about vertical gardening from you channel that this year will not be as much of a learning curve as I once thought. THANK YOU!!!
I have no question. I just appreciate the time and effort and thinking that you have put in your video. Realizing that not everyone has access to a truck or a farm store. giving lots of options and idea !
I can't wait for next springs garden! Thanks to you I have so many cool ideas. I grew a winter squash variety called North Georgia Candy Roaster and it's has literally crawled all over everything else and is even growing into my sunflowers and using them as a trellis. The fruit gets up to 10 lbs so it would need some support as it gets big but that's totally doable. And I'm positive ill keep growing them every year. And the cucumbers....I could have saved so much space! Oh btw, try putting small tomatoes cut in half(cut side up with a sprinkle of salt) in your new dehydrator...so good! I'm just loving your channel and the whole vibe of family, garden, animals!
Charity Smith You can grow large squash on a sturdy trellis by using old T-shirts, nets, or other material to make a hammock hung from the trellis to cradle the fruit. Pantyhose aren’t strong enough for large melons.
It’s been a minute since I’ve commented since we’ve been busy adjusting into a minor fixer upper home. You encouraged me years ago to start growing something even if we were in an apartment and tried growing tomatoes. We just started a little garden and am using your tactic of using totes to cover things in the winter. I’m going through older videos and this is exactly what I needed to watch. Thank you so much for all your knowledge and being a blessing to us. May the Lord continue to bless y’all in all areas of your lives!
You might want to look at concrete reinforcement wire. It is 4 inch grid and comes in rolls or panels. You can find at home Depot or Lowe's, I believe.
We use remesh, which is the mesh version of rebar. It has six inch squares. It does oxidize, but we can get it in a 100’ roll for just over $100. We install it by zip-tying vertical panels to T-posts set at the ends of our tomato beds. Our beds are 4’ x 12’. We set four posts, each about six inches in from the long sides and just inside the short sides so that there is a post near each of the four corners of the bed. We set two more posts 6” in from the center of each long side for added support. We hang the vertical panels about eight inches above the ground. Then we cut another panel of the same length and put it up on top of the two panels, centered as a roof, and zip tie it to the vertical wall panels. We bend the overhang upward slightly so that it forms somewhat of an arch with the trellis in the next bed. This gives us an arch over the bed itself and an arch over the path. We shovel compost and used animal bedding into the tunnel down the middle of the beds to encourage the tomato plant roots to develop throughout the bed, even though the are planted just on the outside of the trellises. We tie a long piece of garden twine at the base of the trellis next to each plant. As the plant grows, we zigzag the twine back and forth across it to keep it supported by the trellis until it grows up through the roof panel and is then supported that way. The remesh is sturdy, but more bendable than livestock panels, so it needs more support and won’t hold an arch shape as well as a livestock panel. We cut it with bolt cutters. We found that the 2x4” welded wire was too small to allow for easy harvest because we couldn’t get our hands or the larger tomatoes through it. I walk through the tunnels to reach any fruit that I can’t get from the outside of the beds. I have grown beans and squash this way, too, with good success.
Thank you for your straightforward, well spoken and extremely informative video! You have definitely reaffirmed many growing techniques that I remember my grandfather doing for his gardening. I love your garden and grateful to you for sharing your wisdom and experience.
Girl-u are a fabulous talker! Cheering u for thinking out loud so others can become fearless food producers-it’s intensely instructive. Especially when u share what is too much effort for too little return. Love this video! Just thought about trellising a Korean zucchini. Now, I’m just gonna find a way to keep it out of the soil & plan clever trellises for winter squash! Lol! Thank u for sharing your experience!!!
So in depth! You give us such great examples in such an entertaining way! Taking us to H.D. to boot. Thank you for these no brainer reasons to grow upward! (none of which I’ve seen before in one video and some I’d no idea). I love it. Totally motivating, and I’m on my way! THANK YOU!!
You are living my dream! I bought a house and land in Eastern Canada and I am moving there next spring. I want to have the same life as you. Your videos are great and you have such a good energy.. thank you for all this info you give. God bless you and your family !
What a blessing you are! I'm so glad that I came across your channel! I'm not feeling as intimated as I once was about starting a garden...thank you so much!
I use carrle panels and t posts...The panels are 12 ft by 4 ft. Using 5 panels I made a great arbor 20feet long. I started attaching them about a foot from the ground which gave me extra height. My friends called it a greenbean garage. I canned over 130 qts of green beans
Some videos are worth rewatching...especially when you have a blank canvas and need inspiration! And look at you now with your giant, beautiful new place 😃
Your Garden is absolutely beautiful, the plants, the layout just everything... I am so happy I stumbled upon your channel... If your not already, you would be a great garden Farmassist, for others who wish to grow Food not Lawns! Your information is clear concise and your a natural... The best of luck to you and I am definitely sharing your channel... Just amazing! Thank you ♡♡♡
Fantastic , thanks 👍. We love your channel and hope to see content from your channel for many years to come . We hope you don't burn out like most channels with very frequent uploads . Good wishes from Mumbai , India.
What an amazing video! You were very thorough on every aspect. I always wanted to do a vertical garden but had no idea how to get started. Now I know! Subscribing and watching more. Thanks!!
this is the best video ever. I live in town and my garden space is already fenced with cyclone fencing. 26x14. You have changed my garden! Thank you for a fantastic garden video!! Your garden by the way is very beautiful. I love it!!
Everybody else has already said what needs to be said. Thank you so much for your humbleness, intelligence and willingness to share tremendously great information!
Watching this (again!) 5 years after your first posted it and I am so struck by the degree to which you have found your voice! Love the way you have grown into your role teaching, sharing, inspiring, and dropping seeds (pun intended) that we mull over on subjects we might not have thought about otherwise. Good on you!
Love what you've done with your garden! One way you could cut cost even more would be do away with the zippy ties. I use Romex (electric line). You can get a small roll, 20 ft or so, and remove the outer casing to expose the 3 wires inside. Works great for attaching cattle panels, etc. to the T-posts.
Do you have a video where you are taking all the plants out of the garden? I was wondering about your removal method when they are all wrapped around your cattle panels. Great video.
THANK YOU! Yes, when you search for vertical gardens you get some beautiful ideas but nothing practical for the edible garden. Your info is exactly what I was looking for.
What I love most is that you don't assume that every person has your ability to bring a large panel home, afford this or that. You bring it down to a level for almost everyone and that's great. Gardening should be for all of us. Thanks for the great video. Your garden is lovely!
Yes I absolutely love her considerations no one breaks it down like this. Gardening should be for everyone!
Thank you so much for the video on vertical gardening . I have a limited space and I am a novice gardener so your video was an absolute godsend for me . I am still learning but I find your videos to be so helpful thank you for taking the time to do them
p
You will never know the amount of stress you've saved me. I'm trying to grow all sorts of edibles in a 3'x8' space with no money, experience, or guidance. They said it wasn't possible, but I did it! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
What did you grow?! 😊
Lovely!
Same! 4x10 here, and I sucessfully grew tomatoes, cucumber, green beans, bell peppers, carrots, beets, coriander and butternut squash!
Ok the squash kinda went crazy and is clearly out of the garden, but still!
Try some bamboo sticks and regular cotton thread. You can create good support for cucumbers that way 😊
How did your garden go this year? What did you plant?
This makes me happy! I learned to grow vertically on a 5x8 apartment balcony. It's looking like growing your own food is going to be a necessity in the coming months. Wishing you the best!
It didn't go very well last summer because it was so hot, but the summer before I grew strawberries, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and acorn squash though they didn't get very big.
I started watching this thinking “It’s pretty long, I’ll just watch it for a minute or so...” Then I got so captivated by your beautiful plants and thorough, thoughtful information that I watched the whole thing! This was lovely and helpful, thanks!
That was the best 23 minutes of gardening education I've ever gotten. Thank you!
Hey Jesse, I know that this is an old video but you can also do a trellis in the "inground area " with a short section of a cattle panel attached to 2 fence post with the other side on the ground. ( like half of an A-frame). Face it so the high side faces the morning sun . Grow a vining crop like cucumbers or melons up the cattle panel and grow lettuce and spinach underneath. This technique allows me to grow both lettuce and spinach in the heat of the summer. I have also had success with cilantro using this type of trellis. Happy Gardening!
the best part about this video is that you take us to home depot and show us what to buy thanks, great vid
Michella Hatherill exactly! I've just made chocolate cupcakes so of course, I'm eating cupcakes and watching! Lol
Yes I love that you are so practical with your advice.
You give us many options along with their pros and cons.
Thanks you and well done 👍
Watch her videos on tomatoes! Mine are doing so much better since I started following her method. She’s a natural presenter in all ways 😀
Let me take that back. You don't need a T.V. show. You're doing great just as you are.
Want to hear something crazy? When I was younger my Dad bent those cattle panels into cylinders for tomato cages which I thought was wild considering the difficulty, but they quite literally will last forever. 10/10 tip on using those.
in the past, I know a person who gardened on a very small veranda. 1 tomato plant, one cucumber, two beans, and some lettuce, onion, parsley, and basil on the bottom of the pots. fertilized them with scrabs from the kitchen and had a great supply of these vegetables till winter. yes, vertical gardening is the most productive way to garden where possible.
Thank you for all you guys do. I found your channel about 6 months ago when I had four raised beds I hadn’t used in two years because I’d been so unsuccessful and had 2 beautiful babies. Now my kids are 2 and 4 and they have their own boxes, I have 7 boxes, and just recently added 2 cattle panel arched trellises on Saturday. Everything is thriving and I always get complements on my garden now. I’m writing all this to say THANK YOU!!! You and Jeremiah have been the biggest influence in me restarting my garden. Thank you for using the gifts God gave you to not just spread your garden knowledge but also to spread God’s love. I pray you and your family are blessed beyond measure. Thank you for all the hard work you do and the love you give.
The end is coming. All these plans of all these people mean
sadly mistaken when the God of the universe, the God of all
This was the first video I watched of yours. It is so glorious to remember your Arkansas garden in the middle of winter and while you’re building a brand new one in the Carolinas. I haven’t missed a single video in 2 years! This video was the beginning of it. Thank you for your continued growth and for bringing us along!
So good. Enjoyed reading your comment Megan
I'm a gardening beginner and this is hands down the most helpful and informative channel I've found. Thank you so much for these awesome videos!
I literally said the exact same thing when I encouraged her to watch Jess! You know that she is just incredible, the way she can grab your attention, show so much heart and teach you in such an endearing way. I just love watching her. 😍
Another reason for growing up: it can do double duty as shade in the hot months! We've built our main trellising to shade out the eastern side of the house, where most of the bedrooms are, to give us some relief from the excessive Aussie heat here during summer- a great space to let summer chokos, snake beans, passionfruit, and tomatoes go as far up as they want, and we benefit hugely in many ways. I love getting multiple benefits from small investments!
Great idea!!!
Ha have plants growing upside out of hanging baskets for the same reason ! J planted sun lovers to block the hot summer sun from toasting out apartment
@@kristarogers6997 same here!! I wish you good luck and a bountiful harvest 😊
Jess did the work to make a huge garden and then people started contributing to it. "Build it and they will come" took on a whole new meaning for me today. Amazing
I took a single bed mattress from the curb during council clean up; I cut away all the material and padding to repurpose elsewhere and used the metal spring skeleton to hook to my fence as a trellis 😍 free and worths brilliantly!
I did that too! Then my husband had a flash of genius and suggested we cut the spring frame into strips lenghtwise (two springs wide) to make poles for climbing plants in stead of entire panels. So we did and put the strips on 3meter (9ft?) wooden posts painted in pastelly blues and they look so funny, like stacks of owls up a pole! 😂😂😂😂😂 But plants LOVE climbing up mattress springs, regardless of if they're used as panels or poles! The tomatoes pretty much supported themselves when the leaves grew into the springs. 👌👌👌
@@lemonielala3080 Can you post photos? I would love to see them.
@@lemonielala3080 do you have a pic? I'd love to see it. I want little owls in my garden!😁🌷🌱
That is a fab idea! Was it hard to do?
We also use our fences as trellises. Anyway I can go up to maximize growing, we do it. I recycle T-shirts to make string. We use old things for trellises. I think it makes the garden interesting and artistic to try to repurpose whatever is available. We live on a cleared acre of 7 acres of forest. We use lighter pine (hard) as T-posts sometimes and we use sticks for ladders tying off with T-shirt string or cut plastic grocery bags into string. We had no money to start so we composted our leaves, sticks, and clippings plus kitchen waste and used that to grow in while utilizing the above to make the trellises. For raised beds, we used felled logs to border and pilled leaves inside to grow. There are all kinds of ways to get started on very little or no money at all.
Leaves make excellent compost!!! :-)
That is so inspiring!
The tip about determinant vs. indeterminate beans was useful! thank you! # hidden gem !
Came to watch this again after a few years! Thank you!
Me too :)
How?!!! HOW do you know so much? Did you study or is it because you taught yourself, spoke to people and read books? It’s so incredible your wealth of information
Every time I share pictures of my garden where I'm growing vegetables vertically, everyone is shocked. I've had such great results! Thank you for sharing, I loveeeeeee watching all your videos! Lots of
Thanks for sharing your ideas. Happy gardening.
I love the concept of cattle panels..What I have been able to use successfully is five foot fencing leftover from perimeter fence job. Good for plants in pots . Make circle out of fencing and pots in in circle inside. Protects from chickens and plants climb up fencing. Tin snippers and hand tool to connect ends. Not hard for an 78 year old to do.
Your videos help me so much. I was raised on a farm and I loved helping my parents and neighbors with their gardens. Fast forward 30 years and I am trying to garden again because I now have a country home with a lot of land. I have some spine problems so the kind of gardens I can plant are limited now.
I found your channel, by chance, and like I said, your videos have helped my tremendously! I am learning a lot. And I agree with the person that said you should have your own T.V. Show. You are very down to earth and have a wealth of knowledge about plants.
you started going over prices, about the time i realized this video was 4 yrs old lol i LOVE the vidoe but boy howdie have prices gone up! lol
The background sounds like you're in North Carolina. :) Thank you for the amazing examples of how to "grow up". I love the idea of planting squash, but my available space has really never allowed it. I'm totally doing it this year!!
When I was a kid, I remember being shown how to use the library to find things. I felt like I had just been given the backbone of my education. That’s how it feels listening to your videos. You give so much useable information, but you also remind us how to think! We are so lucky! And so are your kids! Thank you!
I found you a year ago and you have changed my life! I used cattle panels last year and did well. I am adding alot more this year. In fact I am building a greenhouse from them. It is not just the panels that make a difference. You are one of the most soothing people I have ever heard. Thank you for sharing your peace as well.
You are so smart and you throw off comments (e.g., pole beans are indeterminate and produce more,) that are so informative and I learn a lot from you! Thanks.
Great Video!!!
I love the way you explain everything in detail! For a person my age w/knee, back etc. problems this is fantastic, so simple to harvest! I have a condo w/limited space in my patio, now I realize I can have a variety of things to grow. Thank you for giving us such a fine video, please keep it up ♥
I hope you grow a healthy and abundant garden!
Never thought of that, especially as we get older
Bamboo is a popular landscape plant and is great for making trellises and staking up plants. One of my favorite things as a kid was my Aunt's teepees that were covered with beans, peas, cukes, or melons. Lay in the cool shade with a book and munch fresh veggies! What a life.
I read about earwigs nesting in bamboo and the damage they cause when their food supply is gone.
heavymechanic2 earwigs are the organic gardener's friend, eat pests in the garden 👍👍💚
I’d love to hear more about the teepee garden 😃
Please do not encourage people to plant bamboo without mentioning that it's extremely invasive and hard to get rid of. It can quickly expand far beyond what someone may anticipate. If you want to grow it and have the space, that's fine, but read up first, and never plant it near a lot line where it will invade your neighbor's property.
mooster47 Not a problem is you choose a non invasive bamboo - “Clumping bamboo "will not spread" it only springs new canes from within and around the base of the clump. Shorter and new shoots appear closer to the mother culms. This bamboo is fantastic for hedging, garden features and it also looks great in a decorative pot.”
This is the first Roots and Refuge I watched and I am so thankful I came across it! Your videos have helped grow my passion for gardening!
I searched a few videos before seeing yours, and as I did I thought: "I'd love a video that covers all sorts of trellises and concisely, showing them all in one video, how to, what I can grow..." YOU DID IT! And now I've subscribed. I wanna punch anyone that gave this a thumbs down...those should be erased. And you ARE indeed adorable and fun to watch and listen to. :) Thank you! The thumbs down were probably from people looking for the vertical gardens that use small buckets 😉
@@vikkistorey1911 Yep and if you need more, the Salvation Army here has one day when things are sixty nine cents and on Family Day, half price. I think bloomers could also be used but I have not had anything grown vertical yet. I will this year. So creative using an arch. I have very little sun to grow veggies so I will do this. Thank you so much for your presentation. My wife, and I had given up on gardening this year because of last years disaster. Last year I had free roaming chickens, and wild rabbits. however the coyotes took care of my chickens. Our budget is low, so you gave me some ideas that should work for us, and I'll bet the weeding was much easier too. So thanks again please give us more tips. Respectfully Marion Page
Marion Page I’ll give you some free chickens if you need them email dedra26@gmail.com
Weeding can become a painful issue. We suggest cardboard around your plants, along rows. It breaks down eventually, but with so many delivery boxes these days, ask your neighbors.
Same here. I had a field rat that climb to my 5 fl balcony and chomped down on my greens and tomatoes. They even ate the peppers when all the other vegetables were gone. I gave up last year but have come back strong this year. I'm not sure if the field rats are still around but I intend to put out traps this time just in case. If they attack my sprouts, its all over for this season.
Two years ago my goal was to grow tomatoes and peppers. I accomplished both and even moved on to grow several giant cabbages when the weather got cooler.
My goal for this season is to grow a single honeydew, a cantaloupe, and a watermelon (vertical) on my small balcony -- I also may replant a couple of hot peppers. If can grow the melons, no one can ever offer any excuse for not having a garden. Just don't give up, and good luck.
I enjoy hearing your children in the background it is the sound of life as we all view your garden growing. ... GOD'S LOVE and JOY I just love your show and family...
.....Your videos are a joy from Heaven please keep making them for us all.
We have a ton of old cattle pannel that we can’t use on hutches any more. I’m sure I could repurpose them in the garden. I love this!!!
I envy your panels! Another video I saw arched one minus 2 feet on one end to get a spiked end? Anyway, he arched in. middle and put in his tomato raised bed. I love this girls attitude and raised beds!!
You take all the anxiety 😳 out of gardening and replace it with confidence 😊💕
Thank you!
I've been growing cucumbers on a couple of trellises for the past two years, and the yield is tremendous. I live in a Co-Op Seniors building, so it's great that people an easily pick a cucumber, without having to bend down. I'm going to try the same for the tomatoes, this year. Thanks for the great vid!
I posted this about the livestock panels under a comment but perhaps it deserves its own "space."
There are four different types of livestock panels, different heights and different size holes - cattle, hog, pig, horse. I buy cattle panels because they are taller (wider for the trellis) and have less wire than horse panels which have smaller holes meaning more wire per panel (and more expensive because of the extra wire). The best place to buy them is, of course, farm supply stores and watch for them to come on sale. Locally, Wilco puts them on sale twice a year. If you are going to get several, talk to the manager to see if you can get a discount. When I bought ten, they gave me a discount. I also had them deliver them to me; the discount paid the delivery fee. I had hauled two before in the pickup and felt it was well worth the money to have the ten delivered.
Glenna Rose I was going to suggest this option. Thanks for doing it!
These panels are going to drive me to drink. I need like 12 of them, so hauling in a pickup isn't really feasible. None of the places I have found around me deliver. I am thinking renting a uhaul may be my only option.
Alicia Payne you can do 3-4 at a time in a truck. Lay the cattle panel down flat right behind the truck, put the tailgate down and slide one end of the cattle panel into the bed to the back of the bed. Now pick up the other end of the panel and push the panel into a big U shape, you’re basically folding it like a trellis in the back of your truck. I’ve done 4 at the same time. Make 3 trips.
Alicia Payne just make sure to close the tailgate to keep it folded and I throw some tie downs on it just in case
Andrew Kenseth I appreciate the advice. I finally found someone with a 18’ trailer I could borrow and I just went ahead and bout 25 so I shouldn’t need to haul any more.
Just came across this video and this was the most informative video I have seen. I really appreciate how you gave so many examples of what things could grow vertically on and how much trellises could cost and alternatives. Thank you
Cattle panels are my favorite but when I didn't want to spend that much on trellis material I bought concrete reinforcement panels for for a few dollars each. These come in different gauge wire. They are rusty but that just adds to their charm under a green crop. I now use cattle panels for the sides and bend the cheap light reinforcement panels over the top for archways.
Awesome! Thanks for the money-saving idea! 💕
Our son worked at the place where the cattle panels are made. He got them on a discount price for 10.00 each. SCORE!!!! We love these for so many things. Your garden is so beautiful. I loved this video.
Our garden is tiny and you’ve just inspired me to go up! Thank you so much. This is going to make such a difference for us.
Great video! I love the encouragement to find inexpensive resources. I put up a fence around our garden to keep the dogs from laying in and playing in my in-ground beds. The fencing was used and free, and we reused t-posts and wood salvaged. I put beds all along the inside and used them all for climbing/trellis friendly veg like tomatoes, cucumber, beans and Malabar spinach. And since the dogs are close the deer don't come nibble. Also, I saw a pretty cool video where a lady had some old wire rack shelves in the garden. She planted spaghetti squash at the base and it climbed. When the squash got heavy she just pushed in onto the wire rack! Too easy!
That sounds amazing!!! :-)
🙋🏼♀️ you are such a treasure passing along all of your experience to those around you. I am unable to do all of these wonderful things because of my health now . So I can watch you vicariously with happiness. With the garden that love built 🕊🐥🐣🐰
I love to garden and have been doing it for a minute. But I moved to another state and wanted some new ideas. Stumbled across this video and I am soooo happy I did! Thank you for taking us to the store with you. I get intimidated sometimes at these types of stores and I feel more confident now :) Thank you, friend!
Thought for you: What if you build one of you trellis arches and install a planter box at the top, so the plants that don't want to climb, could instead wave down the trellis.
Thank you for this! My garden is small, in fact, right now it is just a few pots, but I aspire for garden greatness. 😆 I think vertical would be the way to go for my limited space.
divineflygirl when I had a balcony and limited light I stapled chicken wire up (temporary) and put pots at the bottom. In the fall winter and spring I put twinkle lights and ornaments up.
I loved this. I am going to add trellis to my raised beds!! I am so excited! Thank you!! I recommend looking at your local scrap/recycling center! I get all of our t-post for $2 a piece. The office lady has my name for when they come in! They sometimes have cattle pannels as well!
There is a diff between cattle and goat panels. Cattle panels are $20 for 16' x 4'. Goat panels are same length and height but the squares are all same size and smaller and they are $40 each. Cattle panels have two rows at bottom closer together. Goat panels are all 4 x 4 squares.
My mother always told me to grow up. Now I finally can!
After growing a truck patch garden all my life, I'm older now, vertical garden works for me, and I live the beautiful, and I still get enough produce to put up, I plant now for beauty too, but not fancy, I make, and buy things at fleamarkets, your garden is so pretty. God Bless.
Love your video's. We moved into town after selling our mini farm. Small town lot is a challenge, we now use the vertical space to grow. I'm amazed how much we can grow. Thank you, Blessings
I just found you..your channel..OMG it's like Magick!..I'm just starting into my second "true" gardening year. I love MI for his style, James Pergioni for my BTE style, now you my friend..soo grateful. I really like these three different styles in different areas of my small, less than an acre gardening venture.
I thank you for all you do..
Just wanted to let you know that I follow your instructions, and made a huge garden with arches. It worked out GREAT. I planted a mixture of spaghetti squash, yellow and green zucchini, buttercup squash, pole beans...and climbing nasturtiums.
It was absolutely beautiful and grew a ton of food.
I found I did not have to use any extra support for the (sometimes huge) spaghetti squash, I simply trained the end of the vines through the wire a bit each day.
I really appreciate your help with this arch garden! Relatively cheap to build, and looks like it will last forever!
I love how thorough your videos are. Thank You.
I found your channel yesterday and I've been binge watching all your videos. You give off such a great and genuine vibe/energy. We are in the process of buying a home on 5 acres. You're living a dream I've had since I was a little girl.. I'm gleaning so much information and inspiration from you and your garden. I cant wait to get into our new home and finally turn my dream to reality. Thank you so much.
I remember watching great videos about historical Victorian walled gardens--where I first saw them using vertical gardening for melons, etc.
It is Divine intervention that I found your channel. After having acres to garden from 1999-2012 I am getting started again on a 22-30 backyard of my small town, townhouse. I have a 6 foot chain link surrounding the back yard and was literally just trying to decide how to grow blackberries and grapes up the fence and somehow arboring them to a cage coming off my raised, permaculture salad bed. I used the stumps of an old tree to raise the bed and used the larger limbs as the bottom layer of the bed after a tree company who was supposed to bring me free mulch instead dumped the entire, 80 foot white oak tree they took down and cut up into sections. So I took lemons and made lemonade. LOL I am going to learn so much about vertical gardening from you channel that this year will not be as much of a learning curve as I once thought.
THANK YOU!!!
HugelKultur. Look it up. Maybe that White Oak could be used as a foundation for raised beds. Good luck!
I watched your video after going through at least 10 other videos. I found yours the most helpful and informative. Thank you.
I have no question. I just appreciate the time and effort and thinking that you have put in your video. Realizing that not everyone has access to a truck or a farm store. giving lots of options and idea !
I just stumbled on your channel. ( or maybe I was divinely guided) I have learned so much from you. It has been an absolute life changer. Thank you!
Okay this video just changed my whole plan on how I'm doing my garden this year!!!
I can't wait for next springs garden! Thanks to you I have so many cool ideas. I grew a winter squash variety called North Georgia Candy Roaster and it's has literally crawled all over everything else and is even growing into my sunflowers and using them as a trellis. The fruit gets up to 10 lbs so it would need some support as it gets big but that's totally doable. And I'm positive ill keep growing them every year. And the cucumbers....I could have saved so much space! Oh btw, try putting small tomatoes cut in half(cut side up with a sprinkle of salt) in your new dehydrator...so good! I'm just loving your channel and the whole vibe of family, garden, animals!
Charity Smith You can grow large squash on a sturdy trellis by using old T-shirts, nets, or other material to make a hammock hung from the trellis to cradle the fruit. Pantyhose aren’t strong enough for large melons.
Save your mesh produce bags, potatoes, onions, etc and use those tied to the trellis to support the fruit like mentioned in the video.
Yup we do vertical too!
It’s been a minute since I’ve commented since we’ve been busy adjusting into a minor fixer upper home. You encouraged me years ago to start growing something even if we were in an apartment and tried growing tomatoes. We just started a little garden and am using your tactic of using totes to cover things in the winter. I’m going through older videos and this is exactly what I needed to watch. Thank you so much for all your knowledge and being a blessing to us. May the Lord continue to bless y’all in all areas of your lives!
You might want to look at concrete reinforcement wire. It is 4 inch grid and comes in rolls or panels. You can find at home Depot or Lowe's, I believe.
The cattle panels are galvanized. I guess the oxidation on concrete reinforcement wire won’t hurt the plants.
We use remesh, which is the mesh version of rebar. It has six inch squares. It does oxidize, but we can get it in a 100’ roll for just over $100. We install it by zip-tying vertical panels to T-posts set at the ends of our tomato beds. Our beds are 4’ x 12’. We set four posts, each about six inches in from the long sides and just inside the short sides so that there is a post near each of the four corners of the bed. We set two more posts 6” in from the center of each long side for added support. We hang the vertical panels about eight inches above the ground. Then we cut another panel of the same length and put it up on top of the two panels, centered as a roof, and zip tie it to the vertical wall panels. We bend the overhang upward slightly so that it forms somewhat of an arch with the trellis in the next bed. This gives us an arch over the bed itself and an arch over the path. We shovel compost and used animal bedding into the tunnel down the middle of the beds to encourage the tomato plant roots to develop throughout the bed, even though the are planted just on the outside of the trellises. We tie a long piece of garden twine at the base of the trellis next to each plant. As the plant grows, we zigzag the twine back and forth across it to keep it supported by the trellis until it grows up through the roof panel and is then supported that way. The remesh is sturdy, but more bendable than livestock panels, so it needs more support and won’t hold an arch shape as well as a livestock panel. We cut it with bolt cutters. We found that the 2x4” welded wire was too small to allow for easy harvest because we couldn’t get our hands or the larger tomatoes through it. I walk through the tunnels to reach any fruit that I can’t get from the outside of the beds. I have grown beans and squash this way, too, with good success.
Thank you for your straightforward, well spoken and extremely informative video! You have definitely reaffirmed many growing techniques that I remember my grandfather doing for his gardening. I love your garden and grateful to you for sharing your wisdom and experience.
You are gifted .... one of the most beautiful gardens I have ever seen 😃. Thank you so much
Girl-u are a fabulous talker! Cheering u for thinking out loud so others can become fearless food producers-it’s intensely instructive. Especially when u share what is too much effort for too little return. Love this video! Just thought about trellising a Korean zucchini. Now, I’m just gonna find a way to keep it out of the soil & plan clever trellises for winter squash! Lol! Thank u for sharing your experience!!!
So in depth! You give us such great examples in such an entertaining way! Taking us to H.D. to boot. Thank you for these no brainer reasons to grow upward! (none of which I’ve seen before in one video and some I’d no idea). I love it. Totally motivating, and I’m on my way! THANK YOU!!
You are living my dream! I bought a house and land in Eastern Canada and I am moving there next spring. I want to have the same life as you. Your videos are great and you have such a good energy.. thank you for all this info you give. God bless you and your family !
What a blessing you are! I'm so glad that I came across your channel! I'm not feeling as intimated as I once was about starting a garden...thank you so much!
I use carrle panels and t posts...The panels are 12 ft by 4 ft. Using 5 panels I made a great arbor 20feet long. I started attaching them about a foot from the ground which gave me extra height. My friends called it a greenbean garage. I canned over 130 qts of green beans
Cattle😂
What a neat idea, I love it....I went smaller scale last year but intend to go huge this year!
Some videos are worth rewatching...especially when you have a blank canvas and need inspiration! And look at you now with your giant, beautiful new place 😃
I'm a newbie to your site & have gardened for 46 years. Yet, I am learning a lot! You have a wealth of info. I am going to be a loyal subscriber
Mumbai Balcony Gardener | Avid Life Observer awsome stuff
I completely second and agree with Mumbal Balcony Gardener!!!
You are awesome!!!!!
Yes, burn out can really happen my friend, lots of works in making these vids as you know.
What an amazing video! You were very thorough on every aspect. I always wanted to do a vertical garden but had no idea how to get started. Now I know! Subscribing and watching more. Thanks!!
this is the best video ever. I live in town and my garden space is already fenced with cyclone fencing. 26x14. You have changed my garden! Thank you for a fantastic garden video!! Your garden by the way is very beautiful. I love it!!
Everybody else has already said what needs to be said. Thank you so much for your humbleness, intelligence and willingness to share tremendously great information!
Watching this (again!) 5 years after your first posted it and I am so struck by the degree to which you have found your voice! Love the way you have grown into your role teaching, sharing, inspiring, and dropping seeds (pun intended) that we mull over on subjects we might not have thought about otherwise. Good on you!
Love what you've done with your garden! One way you could cut cost even more would be do away with the zippy ties. I use Romex (electric line). You can get a small roll, 20 ft or so, and remove the outer casing to expose the 3 wires inside. Works great for attaching cattle panels, etc. to the T-posts.
I grow Crockett bush beans, and they put on multiple flushes of blossoms. They produced all summer long. Just thought I would share.
I was going to leave the same comment. I've planted various bush beans in the past and they all produce all summer if taken care of (in Southern Ohio)
Do you have a video where you are taking all the plants out of the garden? I was wondering about your removal method when they are all wrapped around your cattle panels. Great video.
That's actually a good question. Hard.to get dead Vines out of trellia
Running out this very minute to buy cattle panels for a trellis !! You inspired an 80 year old gardener, thank you . y
THANK YOU! Yes, when you search for vertical gardens you get some beautiful ideas but nothing practical for the edible garden. Your info is exactly what I was looking for.
