      @@backpackingadventures4813 im so torn between your recommendation, and any of their TOR models. The ultra high and low look extremely beautiful, but there is a huge market in the sneaker head world and fashionista world that they are hard to get a hold of. i ultimately wanted some light comfortable trail shoes (no running, just walking/hiking) and ended up buying the HOKA X OC TOR ULTRA HI. they are amazing but they are all completely white (not great for any outdoor stuff). and i bought the new BONDI SR for walking everyday and they are great but not for hiking. sigh.

    Like you I’ve tried many different shoes including Altra. I always went back to a pair of Cabela’s work boots. I recently purchased a pair of Hoka Stinson ATR 5’s. I agree with you , they are fabulous! I am an older hiker and need the cushion. Thanks for the review.

    Hoka are the best hiking shoes for me. I have the Hoka next evolution shoe right now. A few of my buddies love the Hoka boots too. Those shoes are definitely the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever had. My first pair of Hoka was the Speedgoat. Cool video bro 👍

    Great review! I'm coming off of a pair of Altra Superior 4's, and before that Lone Peak 3.5's. The wide toe box was great, but not so much the cushioning that didn't last. I just found the exact pair and colour of the Stinsons in your video at a thrift shop today, in near new condition for 30 bucks Canadian! Have a pair of the One One Bondi 6's, but I still get some blisters between toes. Hoping the toe box is a bit wider in the Stinsons. Wish I could combine the Altra toe box with Hoka cushioning!

    • @backpackingadventures4813
      @backpackingadventures4813  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! The Stinsons do have a wider toe box. Not quite as wide as the altras but the widest I know of. They are very cushioned as well. When I have severe plantar fasciitis they really made the difference in healing and the cushion just saved my joints when hiking big miles with weight on my back. The only draw back I noticed after a couple years of use is that the soles wear a little faster than other shoes. Not drastic but I noticed it. But the cushion and wider toe box negated that in my opinion.

  • @tonyc379
    @tonyc379 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I too have plantar fasciitis, what helped me the most besides a night sock was Gua Sha or IASTM. I didn't have it done professionally, I just did it myself looking up videos on TH-cam. You're basically scraping the scar tissue on your foot with specific instruments, I even found a video of a guy who used a large steel wrench. Worked wonders on my plantar fasciitis

    • @backpackingadventures4813
      @backpackingadventures4813  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Tony C My podiatrist was going to recommend having that deep tissue massage done with metal tools if the shots and physical therapy didn’t work. What really worked for me was I got a hard massage ball with little nubs on it and I would pretty much put all my weight on it and moved it around. I could hear the crunching. It was gross but I feel it worked. If it didn’t go away I was going to have the message done. I’ll look this up in case it comes back. Thanks!

    • @tonyc379
      @tonyc379 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@backpackingadventures4813 I've done that massage ball. I can tell you right now that nothing was like the scraping, I hope it works for you. It worked for me so well that I honestly don't even remember what full-on plantar fasciitis pain is like. I remember that first step out of bed was excruciating, but I don't remember the pain itself. The scraping solved it, now I just scrape whenever I start to feel it coming back even a little and that's enough to prevent it from happening. Hope it helps you

    • @backpackingadventures4813
      @backpackingadventures4813  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Tony C For the most part the pain has subsided (for now). At this point I don’t do much in the way of therapy for it. I do stretch my calves a couple times a day and if I get a flare up I use the massage ball right await. I also lost a little bit of weight which I feel also helped a lot. When I had it bad it felt like walking on knives so I won’t forget it. Lol. But if it comes back hard I’m not waiting and going straight to the doctor and will probably go to the scraping right away.

    Awesome look at the shoe I haven't really looked at Hoka shoes. I currently have the lone peak 4.0 that I picked up last spring. I haven't had and issues with the zero drop or lack of cushion that I have noticed. I also got a new pair of solomon boots that I used for this winter. During our Dolly Sods trip I started noticing Plantar fasciitis I have been blaming the boots but maybe I need to take a look a the lone peaks as the possible cause. Great video

    • @backpackingadventures4813
      @backpackingadventures4813  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It may have been. You will need to try different things. Try to take care of your plantar fasciitis before it gets bad. It was like walking on knives for aver a year for me. Horrible. Ice it with a frozen water bottle, do calf stretches, use a massage ball and use a brace at night. The brace worked well. Also, since I’m a weight but, I found a brace that only weighs 3oz that I used to take backpacking when mine was bad.

    I’m a big guy, 230 lbs and found the Altra Olympus to be pretty decent however they weren’t very durable in the upper mesh area. I just bought the Stinson ATR 6 and did a 5 mile breakin hike. Very comfortable first time out.

    • @backpackingadventures4813
      @backpackingadventures4813  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Sean Connolly mine have held up pretty well so far. They have small holes and such but so far so good. BUT I will have to check out the 6’s. I’m assuming they are the latest version of the Stinsons so I bet there are improvements. Thanks for the heads up.

    • @backpackingadventures4813
      @backpackingadventures4813  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Brian J I have the Hoka Stinsons. So far I think they are really durable. With this model the soles are very thick (they call it plush) so as far as mileage of the sole it probably isn’t as long lasting as the Altras. However, Hoka has many different models for different situations from harder soles to really soft. I’ve been through many pairs over the last couple of years but it was never for the upper part ripping or failing on any way.

I went to a Pediatrist and had cortisone shots and was about to get surgery. But I started to loose weight. However, the best thing is resting it, stretching and rolling it with a frozen water bottle. I did that a couple times a day. But when I started loosing weight it just went away one day. It was most likely a combination of everything I did. I hope your foot feels better. It really sucks to have that pain and I feel your pain. Take care!

    I"m a hiker with the same problem, high arch but need width. I'm a PT and treating my pf for several months and it's slowly reducing, but don't want to reverse the healing. I've had success with everyday walking in Clifton 5's. and Hoka said the Challenger ATR was a equal to the Clifton. But, I've seen reviews that say it does not have as much cushion. Did you compare other Hoka's such as speedgoat or the torrent or challenger? I think the Stinson is possibly more cushion and as you mention better arch support.

    • @backpackingadventures4813
      @backpackingadventures4813  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I compared them on the website only. I did try them on at REI but I didn’t buy them and use them. For me the focus was on the cushion and fitting my high arches. The Stinsons were the only ones that were “plush” which is their most cushioned and is their widest. The challenger and speedgoats are less cushioned. I paired them with the dr sholes pf insole. Other insoles like super feet caused me more pain. The dr sholes are the only ones that work for me. They add even more cushion to the Stinsons. When I got them my feet felt like I was walking on knives so the combination of the shoes and the insoles worked well for me. Hoka just released the Stinson ATR 6 which is the latest version so I am going to try those after I wear out these.

    • @backpackingadventures4813
      @backpackingadventures4813  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Stan Makowski Hoka doesn’t list the width or have these sized in wide. They are just wide as is. Mainly in the foot box. I tried on several pairs of the other ones, even in wide but the Stinsons still had the widest toe box. These were my second shoes from hoka. The first ones were the Challengers but they just weren’t as wide. I don’t think these are necessarily wide as far as foot size outside the foot box. They don’t have the Stinson ATR 5 on their site any longer. They have a newer version, the 6. I’m soon going to need another pair so I will be getting the 6 and I hope they didn’t change them too much.

    Hello Dan how you doing. Thank you for this review. I just happen to run across this video and was wondering would you recommend these for somebody who has a very very extremely very wide foot. My foot is a sz15 6 EEEEEE wide with very fat wide toe that are equally straight across making my foot 6 1/2 inches wide from my big toe to my little toe. My foot outgrew tennis shoes , sock , & boots 33 years ago and I gave up looking for shoes & socks because I could not find anything. I wish my toes were at a 45 degree angle cuz maybe I can find something to fit my foot. Flip flops is the only thing that will barely and I mean barely fit my foot because my toes are wider than the flip flop straps. Both of my little toes even hang off the footbed of the flip flop.This is how wide my feet. I have to hike in flip-flops and my friends says I'm crazy but they understand my foot situation. Some of my friends i hike with we grew up together from being little kids and when am hiking & whenever I need help on the trails they always want to help me. My friends are also glad that I'm not letting my very very extremely wide feet stop me from hiking in flip flops. A buddy of mine is having a custom-made hiking sandals made for me right now so that all my toes are on the Footbed I just haven't received it yet. Do you know by any chance how wide these shoes come what do you know how wide your foot is? Do you have enough space in the toe box area?. I am trying to look for a shoe that will fit my foot for the trail. This was a good review DAN and I apologize for it being so long. I really would appreciate your help thank you.

      Hi Mack, sorry you are having problems finding shoes. I am not a podiatrist so I can’t say whether these shoes would work for you or not. These shoes do have a wide toe box. I believe they are the next widest toe box next to the Altras. The Altras are zero drop however and my feet don’t do well with zero drop. But they have an extremely wide toe box so they may be a better option. My feet are 4” wide at the ball under my big toe to my pinky toe. I don’t think the Hoka Stinsons would accommodate 6 1/2” width but their shoes do go to size 15. One thing I did to determine the shoe that would fit for me was I went to a store that sells running equipment. Shoes, clothes, etc. The store was named Fleet Feet and they actually scanned my feet with a 3D scanner (for free) and then determined the shoe brand, model, and size that was best for me. That’s how I learned of the Stinson ATR 5s. Here is a link to their fitting process. www.fleetfeet.com/catalogs/fit-process. They have locations all over the country. Here is a link to a list of their locations. www.fleetfeet.com/locations. Other running stores may do something similar so contact some around you to see. I’m sorry I could provide more definitive information. But I hope this information helps.

      @@backpackingadventures4813 thank you Dan I really appreciate this man. I have seen this shoe store before but I didn't know anything about them because at this point I just gave up on trying to find shoes to fit my foot. I will check them out and I think that's awesome that they had a 3D foot scanning machine. And if they do that for free that's even better. Man I wish my foot was your size and my foot being 4 inches wide. It really really sucks having a foot that is 6 1/2 inches wide. I don't know if it's because of my foot being very fat and wide or because of my toes being straight across but it just really sucks for trying to find Footwear for me. I don't have a problem of finding my size 15 I just have a problem with the width. If I find a size 15 I cannot get all of my toes inside the shoes. I was told it's because of my toes being too fat and too wide. But my foot doctor said it's not because of my toes being fat and wide it's because of my toes being straight across is the reason why I can't find a shoes to fit my foot. My foot doctor said if my toes were at a 45 degree angle like everybody else's toes my foot would fit in a shoe even with my toes being very fat and wide. I'm just so confused cuz it's been 33 years since the last time I worn a shoe or sock on my foot. Man I remember where my foot was 4 inches wide when I was 18 years old. My best friends " BILLY " at the time was calling me ( WIDE FOOT ) and Billy have a wide foot too. His foot is 4 inches wide with big toe but he can still find shoes and socks to fit his foot to this day. Now Billy calls me ( BIGFOOT ). I am built the same as you so I'm wondering if I lose a little bit of weight too would this help with my foot width. Please Dan don't take this the wrong way man I'm not calling you fat at all man cuz I'm big myself. I just know some people take that the wrong way sometimes. But I really do appreciate you providing this information to me & the video Dan. Thank you so much Dan I hope you have a good weekend and look forward to seeing your next video thank you.

He is only 12 years old with a size13 5 EEEEE wide With big toes that are straight across too.( father like son ) right. Just in the last 2 week his foot finally outgrew socks. We just measured his foot not too long ago and it is 5 inches wide from his big toe to his little toe. He do not have fat wide toes like I do but they are big. That is just one of my headaches. I'm sorry to hear about your foot issue 2 I know the pain that you was going through. I'm a truck driver and at the ending of February last year I was involved in a truck accident that broke both of my feet. Was in a cast & wheelchair for six months , just had a second foot surgery done last month & yesterday just started walking without crutches. So I know the pain that you are going through too. How is your foot situation coming alone? I hope it's going well for you. Yes my wife says I need to find a sandal for hiking and kayaking. I do a lot of kayaking as well & I've been kayaking barefooted 👣 because I cannot find nothing to wear for kayaking. The Flip flops that I have I do not want to take the risk of breaking the only Footwear that will barely fit my foot. Do you own any hiking sandals or flip-flops that you would recommend. Sorry to hear you were on an accident and I hope your recovery goes well. So far (knock on wood) my plantar fasciitis is gone. The Hoka shoes helped and I really took time to ice them, massage them, and stretch my calves several times a day for a long time. I also lost some weight from the time my feet were bad and that made a big difference. Every one and a while I can feel it tweet hear and there but I keep on the massages and stretches. I don’t have Sandals for hiking. I’ve seen them and some thru hikers have used them to hike the entire Appalachian Trail. This guy Even did it in 2018. Now he was a smaller guy but maybe you can find some ideas . Here is a link to his video talking about his Sandler. th-cam.com/video/bX6WdxiwxRY/w-d-xo.html .

      +JohnB On the Hoka, website the color is listed as “ANTHRACITE / DARK GULL GREY”. www.hokaoneone.com/men-view-all/stinson-atr-5/1099729.html?dwvar_1099729_color=ADGG. I would get through REI if you can because if, for some reason, you don’t like them you can return them no questions asked.

    FUN FACT: if you have feet problem dipping your feet in cold water for 10 minutes 4 days in a row or as much as possible fixes alot of pain problem. it worked for me.

      Thanks! When my planter fasciitis flares up I usually use the frozen water bottle and roll it under my arch. But on trail I usually soak my feet in a stream. But I will have to try soaking them at home in cold water like you suggest. Thanks for the tip!

    Altra Timp 1.5 here....they have more cushioning than the lone peaks and no rock guard.

      2laughandlaugh Nice! Are they zero drop? If they are cushioned enough it may be enough for me to give them a shot.

      @@backpackingadventures4813 yep...zero drop. If you need even more cushioning try the Altra Olympus( I think thats what they are called ). They have even more cushioning than the Timps but they are ugly.

      2laughandlaugh as long as they are functional. I’ll check them out. Thanks!

      I have the Altra Timp 1.5. I love the wide toe box, but the heel portion of the shoe does not hold my foot in place very well. They feel great on a short walk, but my feet aren't feeling great after a long hike with them. I wanted to love them, but in the end... I'll have to look for something else.

      Thanks! A good shoe is something I don’t like to skimp on. I tried many different types and so far these work the best for me for my feet issues and my weight. so far I feel this shoe is one of those things that is worth the hefty price.

    Buddy you’re opinion is only valid for obese people. Trail runners are intended for running not walking or hiking that’s why there is hiking boots .

      That may be what they were meant for but many long distance hikers use trail runners because they are lighter, dry faster and more comfortable than boots. That is why most long distance hikers wear trail runners instead of boots.
