Main Street Railroad Crossing, Portland, TN

- Signal on the left: 3 pairs of WRRS 8 inch lights, a GRS gate mechanism, and RECO LED gate lights.
Signal on the right: 4 pairs of WRRS 8 inch lights, a WRRS/GRS gate mechanism, and RECO LED gate lights.
The bell is mounted on the relay case under a small shield and I believe it's a Simplex mechanical school bell, but there weren't any labels on it that I could read.
This was the second train that I caught today: a southbound mixed freight with mostly autoracks with a YN2 AC60CW leading a YN3 ES44AH!
This crossing has to be the weirdest crossing I've ever recorded. Not only does it have a re-used school bell hidden under a cover on the relay case, but it just has a weird activation sequence. When the crossing activates, only the lights come on. A few seconds after, the gates begin to lower and the bell starts ringing. The lights continue to flash until a few seconds before the gates rise. The gates then begin to rise and the bell shuts off.
I have no idea why the L&N used a mechanical school bell here, but based on Google Street View of a lot of crossings on an L&N line in Louisville, KY, I'm willing to bet that this may have been something the L&N did for a short amount of time, probably to save money.
Also, the GRS gate mechanism on the far signal takes a really long time to rise. I smell a replacement in the near future. Also, some of you eagle-eyed viewers may notice that the wind-guard on that signal is broken.
0:28 a GSI type 1 bell can be overheard the simplex bell
It sounds like a fire drill what the hell
Why didn’t they just put a normal bell in
marisa I. loveyou joe pospiech omg Joe, this is not a fire alarm. The railroad crossing was warning everybody of the train.
Yes they do not put on a normal bell on this Signal.
Now that signal sounds like a school bell.
Awesome catch and YN2 AC6000CW leading! Interesting that this crossing uses a mechanical school bell.
Thank you!
OUCH! Simplex bells on railroad crossings activated overnight will wake everyone up while you’re sleeping.
Never ever play this at 3 AM.
Fuckin fire alarm as a railroad crossing bell wtf
IKR?
Ok class. Today's lecture will be about this railroad crossing! 😁
No seriously, it's a school bell
Great Catch! That bell was unexpected I should of read the description first lol. That's a real attention grabber.
Thanks!
Nice video.
Thanks!
IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A GRS WRRS GATE MECHANISM NOT WRRS GRS GATE MECHANISM AND WHAT KIND OF BELL IS THAT?
I state what bell it is in the description. Is there really any different between WRRS/GRS and GRS/WRRS? Because I don't think so.
LOL was that weird bell at 0:27 the RR bell? Nice catch btw.
Thanks! Yes, yes it was, as stated in the description.
Freight car. It is huge compared to Japan! I am longing. ☺
Yea, we here in America have big trains, probably due to the fact that the country stretches from one side of a continent to the other.
weirdest train too
How so?
@@freebrickproductions never seen freight cars squashed in Autorack trains mostly Autoracks would be in the rear
I THINK THAT PRESIDENT BUSINESS FROM THE LEGO MOVIE TOLD THE CSX TRANSPORTATION ABOUT THE CSX TRIED TO HEAD NORTH.
Fire Fire Evacuate 🤪😂
Hey there is a high hood shunting in Decatur Yard
Must be a GP38.
***** Nope! Sd40-2
John McCormick So it's in the 1600 series?
***** no. 3700's
John McCormick NS doesn't have any engines in the 3700 series:
www.nsdash9.com/roster.html
that should be upgraded
Eh, not really.
That's definitely the most unique crossing bell I've ever seen! I once saw a GS bell that sounded very fast but I've never seen something this unique!
I know its the weirdest crossing I've ever seen. I think I know which video you're talking about as well.
Great catch! That bell rings faster then the 24th Street Railroad Crossing in Ybor City, Florida.
Thanks!
Nice catch. I love the old gate mechs and the 8 inch lights. That is the slowest gate I've ever seen. It would be funny if that crossing was right near a school!
Thanks!
OK... that was the weirdest crossing... I thought a fire alarm was going off at the beginning. Nice catch. :)
Thanks!
Very strange. Most US crossings don't have a loud continuous old school mechanic bell. Nice catch :P
Yep. The way the lights work is also a bit weird. Thanks!
I love it, at least it isn't one of those damn e bells!
The sound of a series of bells! High volume! This is a great railway crossing. It is a slow movement of the left side of the boom barrier, Smile :)
The GS type 1 at the next door crossing has been replaced with an NEG electronic bell
RIP
i live in portland. i have always loved this crossing for its non stop bell lol. will you film portlands other crossing?? i would love to see vids!!
I will if I ever get back up there.
David, I checked out at this crossing, and I found out that everything at this crossing is still there! I am going to try to get it in action.
Wow simplex makes fire alarm related devices. I didn't know they used them for Crossings
That crap is annoying. Why did they put that bell on their? GeeeeeeZ.
Great video! Probably one of the most ridiculous bells for a crossing, but I love it! 😂
Thanks!
Nothing is fixed here except the far signal is tilted
The crossing has been upgraded and it doesn’t have the school bell anymore
I'm aware.
I was here railfanning on Saturday. Such a cool crossing - I hope I catch one here someday. Do you mainly catch trains in TN or different states?
I mainly railfan in northern Alabama, but I do travel to other states a bit (mostly Tennessee when I do, though).
freebrickproductions, nice! I am trying to get a video at Kirby Dr in Portland. If you are ever out in TN, let me know. I’m out usually a few days a week railfanning. 👍👍
R.I.P headphone users.
I think I know the reason why the lights start/stop flashing before the gates lower/rise. The gate mechs could actually be aftermarket conversions of gateless signals, hence why the lights come on and turn off before the gates lower/rise.
I love mechanical bells but that is a little bit much. Imagine living next to that.
I know right
I've Never Seen a Railroad Crossing With A Vibrating Bell On It!!
Nor had I until today!
+freebrickproductions Also, Do You Have The Google Maps Link To This Crossing? I Kinda Want To Look At It
Damonlive783 www.google.com/maps/@36.5807197,-86.5147773,3a,82.7y,85.94h,86.16t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1skmrADEhf_37tcJV-9I__7w!2e0!7i13312!8i6656?hl=en
Seems to be pretty effective. Probably would've scared the crap out of me had I been there in person.
It does seem to be rather effective. Certainly startled me!
i saw the broken wind clip in the rxrsignals website
You mean the wind guard?
Fire Drill!
Time to go home out of school kids! Have fun!
Unfortunately this is gone now
I know.
Is this crossing still hanging around
The signals here were replaced just earlier this year, sadly.
What happened to the gate at 2:58??????!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's just slow.
They need to putt a new railroad crossings!
THATS THE CROSSING THAT MY VIDEO WAS ABOUT
BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO SAY GRS WRRS GATE MECHANISM. IS IT A FIRE BELL SCHOOL BELL OR A WRRS MINI BELL MOUNTED ON THE RELAY CASE?
Read the description. And no, you don't have to say it that way. I do not see any laws anywhere telling me that I have to say it that way. Besides, WRRS/GRS gate mechanism rolls off of the tongue better. BTW, can you please reply to this comment next time to keep all of the discussion in one place?
gate the end very slowly
Yea, the gate mechanism for that signal is rather old and tired. It'll probably be getting replaced in the near future.
Btw why is the bell sounds so werid I never of the bell like that?.. Werid bell
It's in the description, if you care to read it.
Awesome!
Thanks!
It sounds like it needs to be overhauled or replaced, along with the lights.
The whole crossing has already been upgraded as of 2023
Any plans to replace the crossing
Not that I'm aware of.
@@freebrickproductions Yeah I would say that this aged like milk, didn't it?
@@frenchtoast2027 "Not that I'm aware of" implies I wasn't aware of any, at least at the time.
@@freebrickproductions I get it I was joking
!!school bell!!
When was the crossing built
Sometime before 1969.
They it get a new crossing yet?.
Not that I know of.
What is wrong with the bell its the wrost one i ever heard
It's just a vibrating bell like what you find at schools and banks and old-school fire alarms. It was just used on a crossing for some reason.
