    The Charismatic Voice did a video on Slaughter to Prevail's Demolisher, it had a lot of good descriptions of what Alex dies with his voice, like when he says the songs title, it sounds like three voices put in post production, but uh... its not... hes managed to isolate and use his vocal chords in a way that he can almost stack tones, making it sound like hes singing in three different voices, which is an incredibly rare occurrence to record. Hes got videos on youtube showing how he screams, as well. I think hes probably the only human being alive that can effectively scare the shit out of a grizzly bear.

      Elizabeth is awesome and she has unusually good insight for someone that hasn't performed these techniques, but I don't think she knows how much layering goes on for metal screams. When he shouts "demolisher," there are at least two layers. Maybe, just maybe, it's one take with higher placed false cord + lower placed modal and really present aryepiglottic and arytenoid compression, but the apparent pitch and nasal placements don't make sense IMO. It's very hard to tell because the album mix has very high compression and EQ boost on especially the lower part of that scream, to the point that it's clipping. Listen to the live versions, there it's clearly just his mid scream. Many parts of the song have multiple layers, but they're mixed well. I could well be wrong- I didn't mix the song, and I haven't put a camera down Alex's throat.
      Throughout the song, it sounds like he's mostly doing false cord with varying levels of modal behind it. He's actually doing this during the famous Russian part in the breakdown (which I think is one track, without too much editing actually), it's just that he can achieve a particularly low apparent pitch as well as maintain distortion on top of a fairly low note. He's also modifying his nasal resonance (disabling it) and his tongue position ("tunnel throat") but people aren't as quick to pick this up because these changes sound different on such a low scream.
      It's common enough for artists to be doing the same techniques as him, but they will not sound like Alex, and Anthony especially will not, because Alex is both very gifted in terms of his anatomy, and he has also focused on making this kind of scream for years and years. Anthony can do very high pitched screams that Alex would have to use fry to emulate, while Alex can keep an open mouth position for pitched lows that Anthony would have to make an "o" face and use apparent pitch to emulate.

    Finally, Dir En Grey. But I hate to tell you, that was actually one of Kyo's lower effort passages. The man has jumped from A1 to E6 in his head voice during Magayasou. And he's hit as low as A1 and as high as (debated which it was) C#7-C8. A better challenge would be the last verse of Dozing Green and then the insane 4 belted C5 (also has hit C#5 and C6 live) shrieks he does at the end followed by the last few words being around G2. Or the chorus of Rinkaku, which hits a staggering G5 in the studio and has gone as high as G7 live.

    • @xerodelacroix5552
      @xerodelacroix5552 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The studio version was belted, so was the Wacken version where he actually hit them higher than the studio, but yeah they're whistles in every other performance. That's right around when Kyo started caring about maintaining his voice (...unless he gets mad, so the belted C6's on the outro at Wacken and the entirety of the symphonic live version of Decayed Crow)

    • @goner.9989
      @goner.9989 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Kyo’s whistles are not the most easy to access. First, he would have to become able to do a whistle fry. Then, he would learn to compress it so that it sounds more gritty, since they often don’t come out that gritty.

    • @xerodelacroix5552
      @xerodelacroix5552 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@goner.9989 I think one of the secrets to Kyo's vocal range that people often miss is that a lot of his whistles (or what sound like whistles) are actually inhales. That iconic whistle shriek he likes to do live is definitely usually an inhale.
      The studio version of Dozing Green is belted from the diaphragm, you can hear the power behind it and there's a video of the studio version being recorded (it's the shot in one take version), they actually recorded it live and added in overdubs later for the backing vocals and some of the weirder instrumentation going on.
      I have a feeling, especially considering there's an alternate early version of it, that Dozing Green was a lightning in a bottle moment during that Shot In One Take session, but more importantly, you can see that Kyo takes a power stance before belting those four screams out. Every other live version of it other than Wacken, those final screams are inhales and he cups the mic, which I cannot blame him for, his voice has to be a ticking timebomb. At Wacken, he was sick and the audio techs screwed their monitoring up, iirc he could only hear the guitars and Die and Kaoru couldn't hear the drums, and Kyo got so pissed he belted the end of Dozing Green and hit a full octave higher than the studio version, but he definitely damaged something doing it, as what was left of that set he was really raspy and his voice kept cracking.
      I think he knows how to properly maintain his voice and execute those whistles, but sometimes things happen, most of the time inhales would be a bigger risk, but I think he is doing it 100% correctly. I'm not sure if i'd call what he does a whistle, exactly, it's more like using an inhale and fry to get to a whistle. Not every single one is an inhale, but a lot of them are. The other thing is that i've been seeing people confuse his falsetto and head voice for years. A lot of his highest notes are actually head and chest voice, his falsetto is very light and airy and sometimes cracks. He's got the natural range so that the whistle notes probably come easy to him.

There's one insanely high scream in it (much higher than Steel Heart) at 7:16 and there's another anthem-like "na na na" part at 8:32. It's absolutely crazy.
