What a surprise. If one’s only exposure to Syd Mead was Blade Runner, one would assume that he had a very negative view of humanity’s future. However, the bulk of these images, these visions, actually appear to be quite positive, or at least neutral. As for the sad fact that nothing much has happened to manifest these visions, well that takes money. When rapacious governments hungry for power and war, debase and inflate our money, and then suck up the bulk of the money that is left to fund their own ballooning salaries and bureaucracies, they also suck up the future. That we have let them do this makes ourselves as much responsible for our stagnation as any other reason.
Heh... anyone remember the old Atari game "Battlezone" with its cutting edge (for the time) green line vector graphics? That's what the Cybertruck looks like, a throwback in time, technology and design. It will probably be the DeLorean of the present day, I'd rather buy a Rivian or a Kia EV, at least they look like someone put some effort into making them look like real cars and trucks instead of like what a grade school kid would draw. As for other futurist designers, thinking back to a particular designer featured in Omni magazine back in the day, I also like the designs of Luigi Colani.
The viewpoint of Syd Mead's LA (the google earth one) is not from the correct direction. With the Walt Disney concert, Hal and some of the new buildings in downtown it actually does look much closer to that design than you might expect. I actually have the original newspaper supplement that has that image on the cover.
Ugh. How is the space station more lush and inviting than either the real or imagined LA? Mead's is niftier than the real one, but both are barren, unattractive, and (to me) unlivable.
Mead’s artwork is amazing and I like his aesthetic but I must also say it looks very dated. The aesthetic gives me a simcity 1 computer concept artwork.

They're interesting but IDGAF
