Reconstruction aid and better management certainly helped West Germany with restoring its industry after the war, compared to East Germany. But West Germany also was already greatly advantaged by having had a world leading industry before the war. East Germany never had much industry to begin with, and what there was was highly concentrated in the very south in Saxony. Even if Germany had been unified in 1949, the eastern states would always have remained economically weaker than the southern and western states. Though of course to a significantly lesser degree.
That’s true. I visited Berlin in 2014 or so and the traffic lights around the “Pariser Platz” (Place of Paris) are different at the west- and the east side.
I worked in Germany and it is not true that Western Germans are rich and Eastern Germans are poor. In the West, wages are low in 2020 they paid people 1200 euros, while in the East wages started at 1900 euros at the same time. My colleagues who are now working in the East now have 2500 euros plus benefits and sometimes even free accommodation. Where in the West they earn 1400 euros.
I think you should also mention that former eastern bloc countries are also somewhat separated from Western Europe For example in 1991, 39.1% of Czechs were Catholic. In 2021, it is now 9.3%…
As someone who lives and was raised in the former east germany, I can say there is still a cultural and economic dived between the West and the so called neuen Bundesländer (New federal states). For example less wages and pensions Diclining towns Less Population More economic groth due to the lag of buissneses after the reunification Less trust in the politc system And a far intense culture of protesting if something seems going wrong, likely because of the experience that our parents and grandparents made in a real dictatorship.
Sorry, your data is out of date and gives a false picture: For several years now, more people have been moving from west to east than vice versa. Yes, wages are slightly lower in east Germany than in the west, but rents and property prices are also lower here. Since Americans tend to associate the UK with Europe, here's how it really is: Germans in general earn an average of €8,500 more per year than their British colleagues/counterparts, and so east Germans in particular have a much higher standard of living than the English, especially those in the north. Germany is one of the countries that can feed its population without any imports (in contrast to the UK), not least because East Germany has huge agricultural areas and, logically, fewer people live there. This should explain why there are fewer companies there than in the West.- Nevertheless, an incredible amount of investment is being made in future industries in the East German metropolitan region outside of Berlin. The most recent FOREIGN investments in EAST-Germany: Everyone knows that Tesla built its European factory in the state of Brandenburg/Germany (and not in the UK) and is already producing there for the European market. - The US company Intel wants to produce computer chips with a size of 1.5 nanometers in the planned (construction has started) factory in Magdeburg in the state of Saxony-Anhalt/Germany. Current chips are usually significantly larger. 3,000 high-tech jobs will be created and tens of thousands of additional jobs by suppliers and partners. The city of Magdeburg is building a new district to create living space. Investments in Magdeburg for the factory alone are said to amount to more than 30 billion euros. In the construction phase alone, around 7,000 workers are needed for the Intel factory alone. The same applies to the - Chip company TSMC from Taiwan, which is building a semiconductor factory with 2,000 new jobs in Dresden in the state of Saxony/Germany. [To complete it: the most recent FOREIGN investments in WEST-Germany: - The Swedish battery manufacturer Northvolt has decided to build a CO2 neutral factory near Heide in the state of Schleswig-Holstein/Germany. 3,000 jobs will be created here, as well as thousands more at suppliers and service providers. - Microsoft is building 2 large data centers for AI in North Rhine-Westphalia/Germany, plus an AI qualification offensive with local partners from business, municipalities, schools and educational institutions in North Rhine-Westphalia and throughout Germany. - The US pharmaceutical giant Lilly is investing billions in a new factory in Rhineland-Palatinate/Germany.- Of course, German companies are also investing heavily throughout Germany.] - Germany's economy seems to be barely growing at the moment, but this is due to restructuring (see investments above) and almost doubling its defense spending. By the way, here is a classification of how the political parties in Germany compare with those in the USA: You can compare the AfD with the Republicans in the USA, the Democrats with the German CDU (Opposition party currently) and the current German government with the political ideas of a "Bernie Sanders". If you think that's bad, you're wrong: under our current government, Germany has climbed to third place behind the USA and China among the largest economies in the world, ahead of Japan, and despite restructuring, increasing tensions in the world and the associated protectionism instead of globalization! - (Incidentally, the UK has fallen to sixth place of the largest economies, behind India, under a conservative government.)- Excuse my bad English, but greetings from Germany anyway.
@@Vian_B11 Unfortunately, the perception within Germany is also distorted; people are constantly complaining here too, although we Germans are doing incredibly well - even (or especially) in comparison to the UK.
