I wouldn't necessarily say that! I just think it's a slightly older series that not many people are really aware of these days because of just how much anime there is around! ~ Pokeprof
I'm pretty open to talk about any series that I've at least got a little experience in! I actually promised a friend of mine that I'd talk about Tenchi at least once and I wanted to go on about just how big it is! I'll probably come back to it again in the future. - Pokeprof
Trust me, I know of the Fate Franchise... and I'm actually considering talking about it on the channel. It's not made it on here just yet BECAUSE I know how crazy it can get and if I do this, I'd want to do JUSTICE to it. But let's be honest, just because Fate's big and crazy doesn't mean Tenchi isn't up there as well :P ~ Pokeprof
Tenchi Muyo Ryo-Ohki happens to be the name of the OVA series. You have gotten Tenchi Muyo War on Geminar. Its MC is Tenchi's half brother Kenshi. I was hoping for a sequel of Ryo-Ohki which focuses on the adventures of one of Tenchi's sons.
I don't think they're going to be any sequel's to Ryo-Ohki anytime soon, if only because the series itself isn't over and is still going on to this day! ~ Pokeprof
well Tenchi ends up having Daughters not sons in the Ryo-Ohki series, but still would be interesting if that happens. they could do a sequel with Seina Yamada, of the GXP series.
There are times where I wish it was handled a bit better at point, GXP being the prime example of a Tenchi series gone wrong imo, but other than that I'd agree! ~ Pokeprof
I’m pretty sure Ryo Ohki, GXP, Geminar are the main continuity stories and are actually canon, while Tenchi Universe and the rest are non-canon. The author made some novels that continued on after OVA 5 of Ryo Ohki, that went specific on Seina and Tenchis wives and children and their further adventures. I’m specifically waiting for the moment when Tenchi finally has to move to Jurai due to his immortality. I stay away from the Universe continuity so I don’t get confused since they go a different route where Tenchi is mostly human and not Gods Avatar and Washu is just a genius scientist and not a goddess.
I'm pretty sure I've mentioned this before, but when I wrote this script, I wasn't super familiar with understand what was part of the 'canon' and what wasn't. I just knew that Tenchi had become a sprawling series and wanted to talk about it a bit! As it is, though I can understand wanting to stay away from watching a certain continuity so you can keep things straight, though I still think it's a overall good series. ~ Pokeprof
*starts laughing* I understand the Kingdom Hearts Universe fine. Tenchi how ever is a whole new beast. To be honest I wasn’t aware of the multiple timelines. I remember that toonami tried mixing Muyo and universe episodes together then I vaguely remember they tried turning Tenchi in Tokyo into a “Series finale”. Hell, seeing 3 different Recap episodes of how they all met had me confused as a kid. XD
Yeah, Tenchi's a bit of a big beast! I still think Kingdom Hearts or the Fate series might take the cake when it comes to just how wild and crazy the story elements you've got to keep track of might be overall. That said, the main series is nothing compared to how much GXP infuriated me. ~ Pokeprof
Tenchi was one of my first anime series back in the day with outlaw star ,hellsing cowboy bebop. Loved ryo-ohki 1&2 loved universe liked Gxp ,ryo-ohki 3 was ok 4-5 went down hill for me hard will watch again try to give it a chance haven't watched war on geminar despised Tenchi in tokyo best part of the series was the intro.
I haven't looked at Tenchi In Tokyo in ages, since I don't remember too much about it outside of having that other girl being a thing in it. I'd suggest maybe giving everything a chance again? Might be better then you last saw it! ~ Pokeprof
There's also War On Geminar, where it stars Tenchi's half brother as he works as a handyman around a floating school for royalty that also pilots giant mechs
Eyup! I missed that in this original video! I rectified that mistake in the next Tenchi Video and I even have pledged to review it eventually. I worry, though, considering my experience with Tenchi GXP! ~ Pokeprof
First off Ryo-Ohki is a spaceship / cat animal so it does appear in the first episode then it dies in the second episode and then it is reborn in the third episode that is how cool and awesome Ryo-Ohki is
To be fair, power levels honestly are never taken into account in popularity or when something is being made. There are some anime where you'll find characters stronger than even the group in the Tenchi Series! ~ Pokeprof
The Tenchi Muyo Universe truly is vast and complicated with layers and layers of detail. At the surface most viewers would just assume it’s about a harem of alien girls and a young Earthling but the Tenchi Universe goes DEEP, just like Star Wars and Game of Thrones. The cool thing is we don’t even have the FULL Tenchi story. There are still books, novels, and other canon material that just haven’t been translated into English for us yet.
While I wouldn't compare Tenchi to Star Wars/Game of Thrones (I feel Tenchi even at it's craziest is better than Star Wars and GoT is just for an entirely different group), it's actually amazing just how expansive the series is. I do feel like because of how expansive it is, though, it can hurt anyone trying to get into the series for the future, though. ~ Pokeprof
the OVA and universe is an interesting story of co-creators with varying views on where to take the series. the two creators did the first OVA, then split up. one did OVA 2, the other did tenchi muyo tv (universe). it actually reminds me alot of the story behind red dwarf, and the mild feud between the two creators, it finally came to a head in the book series that initially retells the story of the show, but after co-writing the first two books, they split up, both of them writing book 3 on their own. so it became a 3 part book series with two completely different final chapters. lol while it doesn't surprise me that the OVA is still going, it does surprise me how long it is taking. prior to the release of OVA 3 the OVA creator said 3 would be the end of the first chapter of the tenchi story. saying he planned for, i can't remember if it was three, or 9 chapters. i do know it meant alot more OVAs. and yeah, Tokyo gets alot of flack, but I did end up enjoying it. and in all honesty, as its presented, Sakuya was actually best match in that show. tho part of that was the rest of the characters being rather one dimensional. I am saddened at the franchise's fall from grace, going from the titular anime that helped spark the US anime industry and created innumerable anime fans, to OVA 4 and 5 not even getting a US release, let alone an english dub.
Huh, I didn't know about the similarities to Red Dwarf. That's kinda cool. I only remember a tiny bit of that series, though, having seen maybe one episode of it that involved them waking up and finding out the world they had been living in was fake the entire time. I think Tokyo gets a lot of flack mostly because it ignores a lot of the original Tenchi girls for the sake of the new one they put in. It's very much got that fanfiction problem of 'Hey, here's my original character I put into the series! Let's make her be the one that Tenchi gets with in the very end!'. It's possible to do, but handled wrongly and it ends up looking pretty bad. I don't remember Tokyo enough to say if it was handled badly, but I do remember the discourse back in the day. Also didn't know about the series fall from grace where it didn't get dubbed. Though I do think that's more because how long the series has gone on for more than anything else and it's kinda hard to stay invested in an ongoing story that's been around for about the same amount of time as it's viewers have been alive. ~ Pokeprof
True, and I know that Seina from GXP even makes an appearance here and there. It's just too bad that GXP didn't work for me. I honestly thought it was poorly done. ~ Pokeprof
R-really? I mean, I just did my researched and talked about it normally. Same thing I've done with everything else on my channel. Didn't think it was that special >.> - Pokeprof
@@CritiquingMinds nah bro your the goat for this one!!! Seriously, especially if your a fiction nerd like myself lmao this is golden! Like im pretty sure you have the only legit kami tenchi video on this platform and im not even trying to "kiss ass" here but its true bro!
@@crayveonmiller3909 Haha, thanks for the complement! I hope I've entertained you guys, then. I've actually been thinking about talking/watching the original Tenchi OVA's as is, since at this point it's one of few major Tenchi series that I've not actually talked about in full on the channel yet.
Great explanation, but you missed war on gemnar. Also my favorite series are Riohoki and gxp. My favorite episode from universe is mechanical Washu because of its humor.
Eyup. It was a mistake I made because at the time I hadn't rerally watched anything outside of Universe for the channel and most of this was research. I've made sure to do better research in the future and I try my best to WATCH most of my series before going and talking about it on the channel. Mecha Washu is also fun because of just how silly it is. ~ Pokeprof
Well, it depends. If you're wanting to watch the original OVA series, then you'll want to stick to things that are labeled as the OVA, with Tenchi GXP being about partway into that. Not a huge fan of GXP though. Otherwise, most of the other series require you to know very little. Tenchi Universe is it's own reality, and while Tenchi In Tokyo expects you to know the basics of Tenchi (Like who Ryoko, Washu, and Ayeka are), it's all on it's own too. Depends on what your mood is! ~ Pokeprof
Oh, I don't disagree! I just never saw GXP and not only that, it's also the fact that Seina's design as a character is so close to Tenchi that it was hard to tell them apart just by looking at them for a moment! ~ Pokeprof
I normally don't do this, but because it's something that I constantly get mentioned in the comments, I'm putting this here to try and pull back a bit on that! Yes, I forgot to mention War on Geminar when I did this original video. It was honestly a simple mistake at the time and I've mentioned it in the future Tenchi Videos! I will even be going and reviewing sometime in the future! So maybe this will slow down the people pointing this out time and again XD ~ Pokeprof
Eyup, and it's mostly involving adding the cast of a book only series into the anime as far as I've understood! I don't know, I only watched the OVAs up to where were they stopped dubbing them. I even made a video about it! ~ Pokeprof
I've only seen the first three movies and Tenchi in Tokyo. I was looking to pick up the OVA series (13 eps), Universe (26 eps) and Tenchi in Tokyo (26 eps) thinking that'll cover the original Tenchi I know, but from what I understand, theres more to that universe? I thought GXP and Ai were reboots, but they're not? I just want a beginning and end aha
When it comes to those particular series, they're all different set ups. The OVAs are actually several different collections that have been made over the years, usually in sets of Six. Universe and Tokyo are completely separate series, the former made as a TV version of the OVAs while the later was just it's own thing. GXP is connected to the OVA universe, though not strong enough to be worth sitting through it. Ai Tenchi Muyo was it's own thing all by itself and was mostly done to as advertisement to promote tourism for the city of Takahashi, Okayama. Basically, if you're wanting to Original vision of the series, OVA is where'd you go, and there are other things that connect to it. Universe/Tokyo/AI are their own things, though Tokyo/AI assume you know SOME of Tenchi going in. ~ Pokeprof
Haha, no worries! It can be a little overwhelming to try and figure out considering how much of Tenchi there is out there to consume! Here's hoping you enjoy what you eventually sit down with! ~ Pokeprof
to be fair the Tenchi Muyo OVA's, Dual: a parallel saga, Photon: the idiot adventures, Spaceship Agga Ruter, Paradise Wars, and Tenchi Muyo: War on Geminar are considered to be directly cannon per the author. the Tenchi Muyo GXP anime is considered partial cannon as the the Author didn't directly write GXP, however he did like the story told and rewrote it to more of his liking. the Tenchi Muyo movies, Tenchi Universe, Tenchi in Tokyo, Ai Tenchi Muyo, and Pretty Sammy are all considered non cannon.
True, they are considered to all be part of the same universe. But when the connections to them are kinda minuscule or non-existent, it's hard for me personally to justify the connection in the first place. It would be like saying that Code Lyoko and Digimon existed in the same universe because they're both about going into a computer based world. Sure, there is a connection, but it's not something that actually supports the two being in the same universe. ~Pokeprof
@@CritiquingMinds dual :a parallel trouble adventure is directly connected via Zinv the mech. it becomes the idol in GXP. GXP and war on Geminar are direct connections due to the interactions between Tenchi, Seina, and Kenshi all being noted. i don't know the link between photon and tenchi aside from that the world where photon takes place being claimed is where Seina found Zinv. i haven't found enough of spaceship agga ruter to find a connection. all i know is that Masaki Kajishima stated that outside of the movies, tenchi universe, tenchi in tokyo, and pretty sammy series all of his stories are directly connected, and that the GXP anime is only partially cannon.
@@CritiquingMinds upon studying more spaceship agga ruter takes place around the time yosho came to earth. the main male character is a less complex version of the antagonist Zero whom Tenchi fights. and the pirates in the series are the shank pirates. which happens to have a descendant that is Seina's one antagonist
I might be able to swing that, though I'm going to want to sit down and WATCH a lot of the other Tenchi Muyo so I can give a better opinion on it. That said, I DID do another Tench Muyo episode talking about the Tenchi Universe series! ~ Pokeprof
I had missed that when I did my original research for this video! I've since been made aware of it and will actually be reviewing it in the future, though the next Tenchi Muyo review will be GXP. ~ Pokeprof
I forgot it at the time, but I made up for that by having an entire video about it itself! Links here: th-cam.com/video/DRHn_mGrH44/w-d-xo.html ~ Pokeprof
Not sure if I understand? I don't mention Kenichi at all through this, do I? That said... might talk about that series in the future, now that I think about it! ~ Pokeprof
Yeah, which is amazing considering how it started and how it's just kinda... continued throughout the years! There's nothing else quite like it. - Pokeprof
That's a lot of shows, both in and out of Anime, where somethings look cool and interesting at the time... and when you look back at it and realize just how WEIRD it actually is! ~ Pokeprof
The OVA's are something I still gotta get back to. It's not something I've sat down and watched in ages. I did that for Tenchi Universe before anything else Tenchiwise. ~ Pokeprof
That 20th anniversary series was sponsored by a city and prefecture to increase tourism by basing the story loosely on a legend of the region. I sadly don't recall the city's name but it is in the show credits for what that is worth.
I remember reading something to that extent! On the one hand, it's a good thought to have to increase tourism. On the other hand? Kinda doesn't matter where it takes place unless it actually maters for the story. ~ Pokeprof
Very good you definitely did your homework also I didn't know that they made another series that came out last year I was a surprise but not completely.
Haha, you wouldn't think so, considering the comments I've gotten before! But I try my best! Going to be going into it more with the next Tenchi video! ~ Pokeprof
Kinda hard to change an older video, dude. And in the comments, it's been mentioned time and again, with me even saying that I will be making a video on it in the future. I even mention it in the sequel video where I talk about Tenchi Universe. What more should I do, if I may ask? ~ Pokeprof
Well, for the most part, there's no real focus on either series that you need to worry about. Treat these like you might treat the Transformers or the Ninja Turtle series. Each one has it's own continuity and very few actually connect to each other in any way. I'd personally suggest the Tenchi Universe series to start out with since that gives you a taste of what Tenchi is like without having a HUGE amount of things to follow (Like the OVA/Ryo-oki does). ~ Pokeprof
You have to get the manga series to follow all the characters that show up in the later OVAs. Especially having to follow Saina Yamada and how you get those characters. As well as pirate paradise which follows shou. I swear there's so much in this universe. Photon the idiot adventures, dual parallel, and others. It's insane how much is in the Tenchi universe.
Yeah, after the views for this video started coming in is when I realized just how big and crazy Tenchi really was. Even now, I'm still getting new comments and learning new things every day! ~ Pokeprof
It's a spin-off of the Tenchi series, in particular the Ryo-Ohki ovas. It stars Tenchi's younger brother being sent off to another world called Geminar where he pretty much gets a harem just like his older brother does. I don't know much more beyond that, but I've been told it's pretty decent. ~ Pokeprof
You said its weird... No I think not. But at least your taking the time to give this great anime scifi series some exposure. I actually bought all of it and still have it on vhs. The ova's one which was about his mother and the other was about the girl he falls in love with to me at least I think are some great piece of storytelling.
I mostly said it's weird because it's not something people would normally expect from an anime. Unless it's a really big one, there isn't a bunch of alternate versions of the series to go by, like how TMNT or Transformers do. It's much more of an American thing and Gundam is the only real franchise I knew to do it. It's part of the reason why I talked about that here, because I didn't realize how big Tecnhi had became. ~ Pokeprof
Oh, I've enjoyed going back and re-watching Tenchi Universe (Which I did for a video!) but yeah, if you're into Harem anime, Tenchi's one of the better ones.... and it's DNA can be found in a lot of future harem animes. ~ Pokeprof
I'll grant you that Seina _looks_ like a slightly off-brand Tenchi, but personality-wise, he is very different. Magical Girl Pretty Sammi is a continuation of a one-off, non-canon side story from the OVA which included the Mihoshi Special. Universe just incorporated it into their run as well. Also, Photon the Idiot Menace was also connected to the OVA, and more specifically, War on Geminar, which you failed to touch on.
To be fair, when I did this vid, I was mostly research things and didn't actually watch the stuff at the time, thus my lack of accurate information on some bits. I also failed to understand just how big the Tenchi Fandom still is! ~ Pokeprof
@@CritiquingMinds Those of us who were fans back in the early 90s are still fans today, and we love to spread the love. XD If there's anything you want to know about the OVA, there are few sites as good as Astronerdboy's.
Haha, I'll keep that in mind considering I'm going to be talking about GXP next time I talk Tenchi on this channel, especially since that's more or less a Prequel of War on Geminar from what I've gathered! ~ Pokeprof
@@CritiquingMinds Well, it's more of a sequel to Ryo-Ohki that's also concurrent and prequel with later seasons fo the OVA. The one that could be seen as a prequel to Geminar would be Photon. Seriously, the lore goes on for _generations._ ¯\(°_o)/¯
4:25 "...while it [Universe] has still has its harem anime trappings of our main character ending up on the receiving end of the affections of seven different gals..." This statement is flat out wrong. First off, Universe is NOT a harem. In this series, only Ryoko and Ayeka have any attraction toward Tenchi, while the other girls are just along for the ride. It's firmly a love triangle. Second, seven girls? There's six girls: Ryoko, Ayeka, Sasami, Washu, Mihoshi, and Kiyone. Where are you getting seven? And Tenchi Muyo! "GPX"? Come on, it's "GXP". How can you mess something like that up? Masaki Kajishima is not "the" creator of Tenchi Muyo!, he's the "co-creator" alongside Hiroki Hayashi, who directed the original six-episode OVA. This is embarrassing. Did you do literally no research at all?
Even if you consider the fact that Ryoko and Ayeka are the only ones who actually show any romantic interest in Tenchi in Universe, the anime itself is still a show where a single guy is surrounded with several single women. That's a harem anime, no matter what you say. Though I will give you the call out on me saying seven girls, as I was thinking of Tenchi in Tokyo. I said GPX because it rolled off the tongue easier, thanks to there being animes and shows which have had that subtitle before. Add in that I've not actually SEEN that series and it comes down to this was an honest flub. Hiroki Hayashi may be the co-creator of Tenchi, but he hasn't continued on at ALL with the series baring, from what I remember looking up, Magical Girl Pretty Sami. He may have helped start things off, but it's Kajishima that's worked on the vast majority of the series. Honestly, when it comes shows like what I've done so far, I've seen far worse videos when it comes to research. Most of my mistakes here, IMO, come from me flubbing my words than anything else. That's not something to rake someone over the coals for. ~ Pokeprof
@@CritiquingMinds "the anime itself is still a show where a single guy is surrounded with several single women. That's a harem anime, no matter what you say" Sorry, but that's just not how it is. Where are we supposed to draw the line between harem and non-harem if the only criteria is "one guy with a bunch of girls"? Is Neon Genesis Evangelion a harem because we have Shinji living and working with Misato, Rei, and Asuka? No. Is Oh My Goddess! a harem because Keiichi lives with Belldandy, Urd, and Skuld? Also no. Irrespective of them being near the male protagonist, if there aren't more than two girls romantically interested in a guy in an anime, then it is NOT an harem. "Co-creator" is a past-tense adjective. Hiroki Hayashi created Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki alongside Masaki Kajishima back in 1992. That makes him a co-creator regardless if he left the project after the completion of the first OVA. To suggest that Hayashi should not be credited as a creator, or that he isn't an "equal" creator because he left is frankly ignorant. "Most of my mistakes here, IMO, come from me flubbing my words than anything else. That's not something to rake someone over the coals for." Saying that there are seven girls in Universe instead of six is not just a flub. That is such a basic, fundamental mistake that couldn't possibly be made by anyone who knows anything about Tenchi Muyo!. So you were "thinking of Tenchi in Tokyo"? Okay, sure, I'll accept that, and I'll also accept that I can't take this video seriously as a "video essay".
It's more than just that, sure, but it's also the theming of the series as a whole. Is the FOCUS of the series just the characters and their misadventures? Then, yes, it does become a Harem Anime. Evangelion's focus is the Giant Robots, so it doesn't count, but Oh My Goddess IS a harem anime. Like, any basic google search will tell you that. Tenchi also goes further because of the sheer number. Once you get past 3 girls living with you or showing up every episode and the focus of things around you isn't on anything else? I'm sorry, you're in a harem. Sure, Hayashi did indeed co-create the series, but I do consider him lesser in importance to the grand scheme because he's not the reason why Tenchi has continued on as long as it has. He was there for the first six episodes and I believe helped with Pretty Sami, and that was it. Verses Kajishima whose been involved with much more of the overall franchise. It would be like saying that Stan Lee is the Co-Creator for Silver Surfer, despite that being the brainchild of Jack Kirby. Also, good to know that you're the kind of person who is incapable of forgiving someone for a single mistake they made. I'll keep that in mind for all future comments you make that if you make a simple spelling mistake or the like that it's you who should be shamed about it and have it not be accepted as a the 'English language'. ~ Pokeprof
Actually doesn't sound like that bad a comparison, though i couldn't say how accurate it is! I've never actually seen any of Rick and Morty. ~ Pokeprof
Ryoko is the platonic ideal of a woman. I wish they'd have taken it more seriously, the jurai/galaxy police dichotomy. Light hawk wings never mastered nor ryoko getting 3 gems is a discrace is it remains true.
A lot of Tenchi, even the best of Tenchi, boils down to 'Great ideas, rushed or poor execution'. Very much instances of the creator wanting to do things, but not really building it up in a good way. ~ Pokeprof
Complicated? YES. But not as confusingly dumb as Kingdom Hearts or even the Fate series, or also frustratingly idiotic that is agonizing such as Highschool DxD. (Trust me, you won't enjoy Highschool DxD) And btw, Flanderized Mihoshi can die in a ditch because my god, i don't remember her THIS bad.
The problem I think more comes from where it's confusing. Kingdom Heart's is confusing because almost all of it's actual story that progresses anything forwards is left at the end of the game and 100% completion. You legit have to go through hours and hours of nothing to move the story forward in a lot of cases. How many of those games have secret endings by now? Tenchi's confusion almost entirely from the fact that they focus on telling a story, and then stop everything dead to go 'Oh hey, this is really important knowledge' and then nine times out of then that isn't important for the viewer. Like, who cares if this person is a royal or not and how they work into the Jirayan bloodline? Does it really matter that you stop everything to explain who married who? It's a lot of Telling the audience for important material than showing us. ~ Pokeprof
I watched Tenchi Muyo! War On Geminar, or what I knew it as isekai no seikishi monogatari, who’s is vastly different in name and different to the rest of the whole franchise. None of the main line characters are there, there’s new characters and a harem and I’m still confused on how this series connects to any other. Other than being teleported or sucked into some wormhole type thing as it was told in the story. I liked the anime, but when I tried to get into the other series’, I really could since it was not like the others. I tried to find an explanation on this but your video was and still is the closes thing there is in 2023. I watched that anime in 2020 and it still confuses me about every thing. I know it’s an ova and yet there’s little to no attention to this specific series.
It's hilarious you mention this since I'm in the middle of working on the War on Geminar video right now, with the plans on it coming out probably sometime early on Sunday if everything goes smoothly. Though that said, the only thing about the original series that really connects to Geminar is the fact that Kenchi, the main character from that series, is the younger brother to the main character in the original series. The other series falls very much more into the traditional Harem setting than Geminar does, which I'll go over in the video when I post it up! ~ Pokeprof
Yes, I did. If you watched the other videos I've done, you'd know I'd mention that myself and that I'm working on a video specifically for it too. :P ~ Pokeprof
In my defense, I had never seen or heard of it, and this was a mostly research video. Since this episode, I'm both a bit more careful about my research AND I try to watch more the series in question to give more information on it. I in fact did so with the sequel video to this episode and I'm planning to do so when I cover both GXP and War on Geminar in the future.~ Pokeprof
I can understand what you're talking about. It really sucks for them to make something new, and then never finish it up. Though we've gotta keep in mind, sometimes they don't have the option to continue even if they want to! ~ Pokeprof
universe is not a harem though . Washuu Mihoshi and Kiyone are absolutely neutral to Tenchi Sasami may feel something to him but he's more of an older brother to her Ryoko and Ayeka are the only ones who has feelings for him
To be fair, this is more going on the series as a whole. While yes, Ryoko and Ayeka are the one who actually harbor romantic feelings for him, the feel of the harem is still there because you've got multiple girls that will likely end up in embarrassing situations with Tenchi. ~ Pokeprof
@@CritiquingMinds Don’t think so. Fans even ship MihoKiyo and they both show no love interest towards Tenchi ( in Tokyo ruined them) same with Washuu her ego is too big to love do someone else except herself and Ryo Ohki doesn’t have a human form and has her own love interest Ken Ohki
@tetsuyatsurugi9250 I'm gonna say something that may seem upsetting. Only the Tenchi Muyo: Ryo Ohki OVA series is considered canonical. Universe and Tokyo are sadly just spin-offs. Therefore Kiyone doesn't exist in the mainline plot. Also both Mihoshi and Washu have had episodes where they show genuine romantic interest in Tenchi. For Mihoshi, it was her very first appearance. It's just that they don't pursue Tenchi as much as Ryoko and Ayeka. Ryoko and Ayeka actually become less relevant as the OVA series continues the plot. It's actually annoying how they do my favorite characters dirty just to add in more romantic interests.
I never admitted to Math being my strong point! XD In all seriousness, though, was a simple mistake on my point there. And I'm not sure about doing a Month focus on it, considering both the problems the Jojo Month has given me thus far as well as the fact that the Jojo Month has... kinda gone over like a lead balloon. I have talked about doing something with the Tenchi Series, however and there will definitely be another Fascinating Fiction episode for it in about a months time or so (I'm wanting to go through my normal rotation after a month of Jojo). ~ Pokeprof
I've been following all of the Tenchi Series EXCEPT the one Where Sasami becomes a majical girl. My guess is your not particularly fond of this Anime. It probably irks you judging by the tenor of your voice. I'm sorry you feel that way. We all like what we like. I wasnt going to send a text about it but, WHEN it comes to Fiction ALL of it is weird. I dunno where your from but this country has been charging forward towards ANYTHING Weird..Like Fiction..any fiction that depicts a type of lifestyle different yet not so much. Something like a song that just scratches a certain itch that has ALWAYS been there. I've been a Scify fan even before there was a Scify jonra that was widely popular in the 60's. I'm not trying to convince you about anything involved in the Tenchi Muyo anime, manga or movies amout it. It just works for me. I own many of the anime an manga. I purchased it quite awhile ago. My wife (also Japanese) is a fan too. She has more of it than I do. She tells me the differences between what is in our manga an anime an movies versus whats actually spoken of in Japanese. If its not a bother do more of this series. Your pick. If you choose not to thats fine. I do hope someday you will find it more enteraining than you do now. I guess some anime is like music. Some you just are attracted to it While others are like finger nails runing accros a Blackboard. Thanks for your take on it. Certainly gives me a different take on it. Life in Japan is obviously different than here in the States but like everywhere else on this 🌎 its changing too. Like those of us who grew up in a time where we had drills that our schools would have us do during a Nuclear attack, The very thought of it just pemeates the worst reality you can think of to live through an WORSE YET knowing its GOING to happen an there isnt a Damn thing you can do to stop it.. I still am freaked out by public sirens going off just to test the emergency broadcast system . The Japanese DID live through that. Yes I know you know that already.! But they like myself wanted an escape where some one japanese ( or anybody really) went beyond whats here in this universe. HAVING been ignorant to the fact he was not all from this world. Sure he was born here but his genepool included that of a different type of humanoid species. So many who love Scify are just thrilled of that posibility an the idea that earth itself is just some country backwater planet still filled with an inferior Humanoid species. Yeah quite a few buy that. Its like jumping of a board thats attached to a scaffolding Very high. When you jump off to the point of where you land into the water it IS a mental physical change that happens both inside an out. Not boring you am I? Its the same for me whenever I'm reading manga or seeing the anime. But its all in your head guy. If you have EVER been on plane an jumped out it for the first time (& yes i have being in the army Retired Ranger ) that exhilaration is what I felt when I first read an when I seen the anime for the first time.! I got a smaller sensation when I first seen Star Trek. What I'm getting at is, its a great series that I just love to see even if its just so-so to you or anyone else. Do have a good day wherever you are. Take care guy.
First off, Wow, big reply! I'll try my best to hit all the points responding to you about the video. "My guess is your not particularly fond of this Anime." Not true! I've actually had fun with it in the past, but I was going more for a 'wow, you wouldn't believe this stuff' tone for what I was talking about. Especially since, when making this video I hadn't seen some of the more recent stuff, I can't actually say anything to it's actual quality, but I still wanted to talk about it. That's one of the major reasons I flat out said I knew nothing of AI Tenchi Muyo. But yeah, think of this more of a 'me telling someone who knows nothing about Tenchi' sort of video, where I'm saying stuff like 'Can you believe the original OVA for this series has been going on for almost as long as I've been alive?' "If it's not a bother, do more of this series." Fascinating Fiction is a series in and of itself is something that is here for me to talk about all the different stuff I'm interested in. I will bounce between the different franchises I want to talk about, but that said, I AM working a follow up to the Tenchi Video as we speak.. Going to try my best to get it out by tomorrow, but we'll see. "I guess some anime is like music, some you're just attracted to while others are like finger nails on a blackboard." I find that's pretty much EVERYTHING in life, not just anime and music. It's a matter of personal taste for a lot of things. Something I might love is something else that might be a thing that you hate. The point is though is that we're able to talk about things without getting into fights about it! "What I'm getting at is, its a great series that I just love to see if it it's just so-so to you." No worries! Everyone is free to love something to their hearts content! Hell, one of my favorite movies of all time is the Super Mario Brothers movie. But there in lies the point for me. I LOVE that movie, but I'll also be the first to admit that it's not a good movie. As long as you're capable of admitting when something is bad even when you love it to death, that's all I really ask for!~ Pokeprof
So did I, until I rewatched it. While I still probably enjoy it the most out of the Tenchi's I've seen/rewatched, It didn't have anywhere near as much plot as I had originally thought. Even made a video on it about revisiting the series! ~ Pokeprof
@@CritiquingMinds I would say it starts picking up and having an actual plot around episode 13. Before that there isn’t much plot and really just some exposition.

Quite a bit! I've only really watched the first... two? bits of Tenchi Muyo Ryo-Oki, Tenchi Universe, and Tenchi in Tokyo. I honestly didn't know that the series was this big until I actually went and did the research for this episode! ~ Pokeprof
@@CritiquingMinds back in2014 if I remember correctly, I nearly cannot talk about Tenchi Anime on the internet because light novel the first 3 book does not exist in English only about 5-6kb webpage by some chap write overview of 3book in japan-lish on nefty server in japan, we come so-far from that point.. and yes, with google you can find the 3book both official (buy it on google book) and un-official version with a lot of color in it just for fun to read on ..(that web board).. and gxp novel on ..(another web board).. but you don't need to do that in 1days or 1month you can read it anytime you want... and enjoy the show.

To be fair, I never saw it. In the case of the Tenchi videos, I've only watched the original series, Tenchi TV, and Tenchi in Tokyo, with I think at least one of the movies as well. I honestly never even knew about half the other series until I started doing research for the video itself! ~ Pokeprof
2 actually Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventure is also part of the franchise. Although it is not as obvious on the account the name doesn't include Tenchi Muyo.
Mecha one? I don't recall a Mecha one, at least apart of the series I'm familiar with. Might be one of the ones that came a little later for me! ~ Pokeprof
Ah, then yeah, I never saw it. Though a lot of people are suggesting I check it out and even do an episode on it. Trying to figure out if I should watch it or watch GXP first, considering it comes after it. ~ Pokeprof
@@CritiquingMinds Its great except the ending is totally rushed. Although what anime series or movie doesnt bum rush the ending. I think you should watch GXP first, it has a better continuity to Universe, plus towards the there will be a nice surprise. Then watch War on Geminar
Think people would be interested in my thoughts on GXP as well? I feel like I should do a video on that if I'm also going to do one with War on Geminar! ~ Pokeprof
I have watched this to see the thoughts of the author about how moral it is that the MC having sex with all the girls at the same time including mother and daughter mixed up, but didn't see any mention of it. Anyway, this anime is disgusting because of it.
Harem Animes have been a staple of the genre for ages, so having the main character eventually have relationships with a bunch of a woman is actually pretty part for the course. While the Mom and Daughter bit is a bit less used, it's also not exactly uncommon. And honestly, Tenchi is probably the LEAST bad one out of the bunch when it comes to characters shacking up with each other. ~ Pokeprof
@@CritiquingMinds Not sure! There are many harem anime out there, yes, but none of them include g*ngb*ng :) They were just kidding around, flirting, etc., but the lines were only crossed in h*ntai, not in anime. It’s just such a disappointment for this kind of classic and nostalgic anime to unnecessarily do that. At least he could have done it with one girl at a time, not all of them together. Imagine kids figure out they are made in a group sex.
Eh, from what I recall, I actually don't think the original Tenchi series is the best, but it's been a long time since i've seen it. Universe i enjoyed but GXP.... well... I did have a 20 minute video ranting about it! ~ Pokeprof
Eh, I wouldn't call it crap unless we're talking about Tenchi GXP, but it's definitely up there in the more confusing anime series if you're trying to understand every bit of it. Curious, though, what kind of Anime would be the one you'd like? ~ Pokeprof
tenchi muyo is only known to few man of cultures. anime fans nowadays don't even know the tenchi muyo series
I wouldn't necessarily say that! I just think it's a slightly older series that not many people are really aware of these days because of just how much anime there is around! ~ Pokeprof
Right you are my friend😎😎
I know this from the spin off(isekai no seikishi monogatari), I thought it's part of the series lol
It is actually! It's one of the spin-off series I was talking about, in which the main character is actually Tenchi's brother! ~ Pokeprof
I know
I love Tenchi Universe and I'm surprised to see it talked about on here.
I'm pretty open to talk about any series that I've at least got a little experience in! I actually promised a friend of mine that I'd talk about Tenchi at least once and I wanted to go on about just how big it is! I'll probably come back to it again in the future. - Pokeprof
Wait are you serious? I would be more surprised to see it discussed on TikTok.
Critiquing Minds: Tenchi Muyo is a complicated franchise.
FATE Franchise: Am I a joke to you?
Trust me, I know of the Fate Franchise... and I'm actually considering talking about it on the channel. It's not made it on here just yet BECAUSE I know how crazy it can get and if I do this, I'd want to do JUSTICE to it. But let's be honest, just because Fate's big and crazy doesn't mean Tenchi isn't up there as well :P ~ Pokeprof
People: Fate is complicated
Me: Multiverse
Tenchi Muyo Ryo-Ohki happens to be the name of the OVA series. You have gotten Tenchi Muyo War on Geminar. Its MC is Tenchi's half brother Kenshi. I was hoping for a sequel of Ryo-Ohki which focuses on the adventures of one of Tenchi's sons.
I don't think they're going to be any sequel's to Ryo-Ohki anytime soon, if only because the series itself isn't over and is still going on to this day! ~ Pokeprof
Hold up kenshi is what!?
Don't get me started on how the series ends. If it has a season 2 then it's good but since it doesn't i want a lot of questions answered
well Tenchi ends up having Daughters not sons in the Ryo-Ohki series, but still would be interesting if that happens. they could do a sequel with Seina Yamada, of the GXP series.
@@johnlerch7699 its confirmed he has at least two sons.
This is one of the few franchisees that, despite taking place in a large amount of places and worlds, stayed true to the core of the MC identity.
~ Pokeprof
GXP as an anime is partial cannon the GXP books are full cannon
*starts laughing*
I understand the Kingdom Hearts Universe fine.
~ Pokeprof

Mmm, sounds about right!
~ Pokeprof
I felt the quality dropped after episode 3 😅 then the rest was meh I was forcing myself to finish it at that point.
First off Ryo-Ohki is a spaceship / cat animal so it does appear in the first episode then it dies in the second episode and then it is reborn in the third episode that is how cool and awesome Ryo-Ohki is
Oh, did I say something to indicate she didn't? ~ Pokeprof
Feels like he skip most of the story and how these are link. Like ryoko was made using dna of wushu why she is like mother.
Many think that DBZ or some other anime have best power house . Just see this anime they destroyed dimensions by just touching each others
~ Pokeprof
the OVA and universe is an interesting story of co-creators with varying views on where to take the series. the two creators did the first OVA, then split up. one did OVA 2, the other did tenchi muyo tv (universe). it actually reminds me alot of the story behind red dwarf, and the mild feud between the two creators, it finally came to a head in the book series that initially retells the story of the show, but after co-writing the first two books, they split up, both of them writing book 3 on their own. so it became a 3 part book series with two completely different final chapters. lol
while it doesn't surprise me that the OVA is still going, it does surprise me how long it is taking. prior to the release of OVA 3 the OVA creator said 3 would be the end of the first chapter of the tenchi story. saying he planned for, i can't remember if it was three, or 9 chapters. i do know it meant alot more OVAs.
and yeah, Tokyo gets alot of flack, but I did end up enjoying it. and in all honesty, as its presented, Sakuya was actually best match in that show. tho part of that was the rest of the characters being rather one dimensional.
~ Pokeprof
There is a lot that connects gxp and ryo ohki. Little hints in both animes reveal larger details which makes the shows even more fascinating.
True, and I know that Seina from GXP even makes an appearance here and there. It's just too bad that GXP didn't work for me. I honestly thought it was poorly done. ~ Pokeprof

~ Pokeprof
What order should we start watching this anime ??
Well, it depends. If you're wanting to watch the original OVA series, then you'll want to stick to things that are labeled as the OVA, with Tenchi GXP being about partway into that. Not a huge fan of GXP though.
Otherwise, most of the other series require you to know very little. Tenchi Universe is it's own reality, and while Tenchi In Tokyo expects you to know the basics of Tenchi (Like who Ryoko, Washu, and Ayeka are), it's all on it's own too. Depends on what your mood is! ~ Pokeprof
Seina Yamada from gxp is tenchi's cousin. So blood relatives that grew up in the same place looking and acting the same makes a lot of sense.
Oh, I don't disagree! I just never saw GXP and not only that, it's also the fact that Seina's design as a character is so close to Tenchi that it was hard to tell them apart just by looking at them for a moment! ~ Pokeprof
@@CritiquingMinds He actually looks more like Kazuki from Dual: Parallel Adventure. Which is intentional.
I normally don't do this, but because it's something that I constantly get mentioned in the comments, I'm putting this here to try and pull back a bit on that! Yes, I forgot to mention War on Geminar when I did this original video. It was honestly a simple mistake at the time and I've mentioned it in the future Tenchi Videos! its 2023 The 6th OVA has dropped.

~ Pokeprof
@@CritiquingMinds Thank you so much! Exactly what I've been trying to figure out.

to be fair the Tenchi Muyo OVA's, Dual: a parallel saga, Photon: the idiot adventures, Spaceship Agga Ruter, Paradise Wars, and Tenchi Muyo: War on Geminar are considered to be directly cannon per the author. the Tenchi Muyo GXP anime is considered partial cannon as the the Author didn't directly write GXP, however he did like the story told and rewrote it to more of his liking. the Tenchi Muyo movies, Tenchi Universe, Tenchi in Tokyo, Ai Tenchi Muyo, and Pretty Sammy are all considered non cannon.

~ Pokeprof
@@CritiquingMinds thanks

What is teachi war on geminar

~ Pokeprof
Yea do it. I would like to see that
Do what? :P ~ Pokeprof
Tenchi isn’t bad if your into harem comedy and don’t mind older anime trust you’ll enjoy
Seriously, the lore goes on for _generations._

"...while it [Universe] has still has its harem anime trappings of our main character ending up on the receiving end of the affections of seven different gals..."
This statement is flat out wrong.
~ Pokeprof
@@CritiquingMinds
"the anime itself is still a show where a single guy is surrounded with several single women. That's a harem anime, no matter what you say"
Sorry, but that's just not how it is.
That's not something to rake someone over the coals for."
Saying that there are seven girls in Universe instead of six is not just a flub.
~ Pokeprof
you forgot Ryo-ohki... the ship she gets a human form.
It’s actually like the morty without the Rick lol
(Trust me, you won't enjoy Highschool DxD)
And btw, Flanderized Mihoshi can die in a ditch because my god, i don't remember her THIS bad.
~ Pokeprof
You missed tenchi muyo war on geminar
Yes, I did. If you watched the other videos I've done, you'd know I'd mention that myself and that I'm working on a video specifically for it too. :P ~ Pokeprof
Surprised he didn’t recover tenchi multi war on geminar
In my defense, I had never seen or heard of it, and this was a mostly research video. Since this episode, I'm both a bit more careful about my research AND I try to watch more the series in question to give more information on it. I in fact did so with the sequel video to this episode and I'm planning to do so when I cover both GXP and War on Geminar in the future.~ Pokeprof
I just don't like the fact that they make like a hole new anime and don't finish it (war on we all know what)
I can understand what you're talking about. It really sucks for them to make something new, and then never finish it up. Though we've gotta keep in mind, sometimes they don't have the option to continue even if they want to! ~ Pokeprof
universe is not a harem though . Washuu Mihoshi and Kiyone are absolutely neutral to Tenchi Sasami may feel something to him but he's more of an older brother to her
Ryoko and Ayeka are the only ones who has feelings for him
To be fair, this is more going on the series as a whole.
You should do a month focus on it :D. lol 20 years? dude the original came out in 1992, thats 30 years worth of telling which is more impressive.
I never admitted to Math being my strong point! XD
In all seriousness, though, was a simple mistake on my point there.
But yeah, think of this more of a 'me telling someone who knows nothing about Tenchi' sort of video, where I'm saying stuff like 'Can you believe the original OVA for this series has been going on for almost as long as I've been alive?'
"If it's not a bother, do more of this series." Fascinating Fiction is a series in and of itself is something that is here for me to talk about all the different stuff I'm interested in.
I always liked universe the best, I thought it was the best telling of the story.
So did I, until I rewatched it. While I still probably enjoy it the most out of the Tenchi's I've seen/rewatched, It didn't have anywhere near as much plot as I had originally thought. Even made a video on it about revisiting the series!
