  • The Jewish experience under Islam defines the Middle Ages. As a tolerated minority, Jews were generally more successful and comfortable than under Christendom. The Islamic Empire enabled Jewish trade, religious uniformity (and schism), and cultural and intellectual exchange. How far Jewish-Muslim relations were then from where they are now!
For more on this subject, viewers are encouraged to explore the IISHJ's 2007 Colloquium "Jews and the Muslim World: Solving the Puzzle" at iishj.org/coll..., including links to video presentations from the conference on that page.
Rabbi Adam Chalom, Dean for North America of the International Institute for Secular Humanistic Judaism, continues his exploration of Jewish history based on the IISHJ Adult Education Curriculum, "An Introduction to Jewish History."

The "extra" taxes non muslims paid in a muslim country was not extra in a sense the ruler took money from muslims too "Zakat" paid as a compulsory religious duty. This money was spent in service for all citizens.

The punishment for not paying the jizya was death. pay us or we will kill you. Also the gizio was used to pay for military engagements to expand the Muslim empires. Plus the gizio was used for Muslim overlords to fund their lavish lifestyles. And you are right that the Jizya used for the benefit of all. So it really depends on what point of view you look at it from. On one hand those who claim it was a form of extortion are right. On the other hand those who claim it was a tax used to fund the services for the benefit of all are right. On the other hand those who claim it was used to fund Muslim imperialism and colonialism are right. On the other hand those who claim it was used to fund the lavish lifestyles of the Muslim overlords of the Jews are right. So both of the defenders and the detractors of the Jizya are right.
