I should clarify, I know that The Last of Us already has multiplayer modes and that they're quite popular. I'm trying to say that once you take that and blow it up into an entire live service experience with all the inevitable passes and skins and everything it kind of cheapens the IP in my eyes. It just seems very ill-suited to a series with these very serious themes.
It’s kind of hilarious. I don’t particularly like Nintendo, but at least they release competent games and stay consistent. Sony and Microsoft are repeatedly shooting themselves in the foot over and over, and Nintendo just wins by acting normal. They aren’t even trying to compete, cause why should they? Their competition is a complete joke right now, and they didn’t have to lift a finger. They have a free win with switch 2 as long as they don’t get greedy.
I like that Nintendo will just... release smaller games, that aren't expected to do super well and might be experimental. And they have so many recognizable IPs. They will always have games that interest someone.
@@IffondrelComing back to gaming from the early 2000s even those games by Nintendo are huge in scope. I bought 12 games for the Switch in my newfound enthusiasm and it will take me at least 2 years to finish them all. They have so many game modes, so many worlds. Pikmin 4 is huge for example, so are Metroid Dread and Mario + Rabbids. Games like Skyrim or Xenoblade Chronicles terrify me, It would take me a year to finish even one of those.
@BleakVision I mean it's worth in the end, I picked up Xenoblade Chronicles 3 in 2022, didn't play it till 2023 and I played like very widely throughout the year, I only got to the end of chapter 4 at the end of the year and took a break from it and continued in September 2024 played chapter 5 for a few hours each week up until reaching the end of the chapter 5 where I got REALLY hooked and played everyday and beat it last month and I want to try to 100%, but that's gonna take like another 100 hours lol
These are the same games that Sony said, and I quote "there'll be no sequels or updates to 'major existing franchise titles' on the PS5 before March 2025". So the cancelled Spiderman, horizon and god of war means that their fans will have to wait even longer for more games. The handling is so laughably poor that it makes the Metroid prime 4 development seem stable.
This clearly shoe that Sony has no clue on how to develop & nature a GaaS game. Unlike SP games, gamer only play 1-2GaaS at the same time. So the "Sony 12 " would compete with established games like CoD, Overwatch, but also compete with each other.
The most infuriating part about it is that the millionaires who lead these companies make decisions that fail but it’s other people that lose their jobs as a result.
If you read any history book about the soviet union, you'll see this kind of power dynamic is what ultimately led to its collapse. Just change the millionaires for politicians, and videogames for public policies. 😂
@@EarnestGamer You can’t seriously be equating the fall of the USSR to sony cancelling live-service games. Tell me you know nothing about Russian history without telling me you know nothing about Russian history lmao
The problem is that they’re putting corporate-minded people in leadership roles overseeing creative endeavors. Those do not and never will gel. Corporate dummies only look back to chase trends. Creatives look forward. If they spend all their time trying to replicate someone else’s success, they’ve already failed.
A reason why there should be a level of separation between the publishing/business end of gaming and the studios that make games. Business minded people should be looking at if a concept sent in will bring in profit, but not specifically try to dictate how it will do so.
If only people in power actually respected the people getting paid less than them, they could work WITH developers instead of practically against them…
This kind of thing is ruining the film industry is well. Writers often bear the brunt of the blame but more often than not shitty decisions come from corporate intervention, underfunding and s mandating X amount of action scenes and shit like shoving in a romance or love triangle to a story that doesn't need it. And then a movie isn't received well they won't admit they sabotaged it and instead want to blame some measurable metric like "oh i guess the public just doesn't like this genre right now" or some other bullshit.
@@rubbish_kat It 100% is ruining film too. That's why we keep seeing massive AAA movies and games flop while smaller, more personal projects are thriving.
@jacobmonks3722 .... that is what woke culture done to gaming. Woker think their :mESsAGE" is more important than making money. If companies really chase money, they would have listen to their customer.
@glennhkboy Uhhh no it's got literally nothing to do with women and minorities in gaming. It's got to do with big corporations latching on to trends due to a few high profile outliers.
The thing about Nintendo is that they’re cash flush, from the litany of successful consoles and best selling games. On top of that, they aren’t chasing “performance,” per se, they are chasing the experience and quality for the user, their customer base, not chasing raw power and metrics. It’s like the possibly misattributed Miyamoto quote: "A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad,” they want to refine and optimize to the best of their ability, because they know their product will sell copies, so why bungle it to meet some yearly release schedule. They drop their main IP titles to great acclaim, and pepper in new and interesting titles in between, and also have a pretty wild eShop to pass the time (there are innumerable awful “games,” but Nintendo is just the distributor, not the publisher, so it’s a mixed bag, blame Big N as much as they deserve for facilitating). Ultimately they know their bread and butter, and deliver on those IPs, which only gives them more cred to continue on their trajectory, because it’s working. To caveat all that, I think their pricing model for remaster/remade games is outrageous; charging new AAA prices for 10,15,20 year old games because it’s on the newest, soon to be superseded console is ridiculous. BUT, people pay the prices and but the games, so who am I to question their practices if they’re working.
They swept aside this pretender and that one. I sure hope so, it's too early to be gloating, now we must hype and promote the NS2 like crazy and also Nintendo must do their part and deliver the bangers!
Which is unfortunate. All monopolies are bad and without Sony, the games that gave that PlayStation feel are relegated to PC only as far as I can tell.
It’s just a game console, my guy … it doesn’t matter if they “win” the console wars. Whoever handles their business best, at any one moment, is winning. If Nintendo “loses”, it will be their own fault, but right now, they’re on top and they earned it.
Giving people the option of 12 live services is like giving them the option of 12 similar subscription services or 12 all you can eat buffets The whole “idea” is that you create a captive audience, you give them a game that’s engaging enough that they don’t want to play any other games, not go “play this game, no this game, no this game” or expect them to play ALL 12 of them EVERY SINGLE DAY
Listen to this: The Wii U, which lasted only four years and has had many of it's games ported to other consoles due to how badly it sold, STILL HAS MORE EXCLUSIVES (35) THAN THE PS5 (32). (Source: Wikipedia's list of exclusive games)
People are hard on the Wii U, but I had my fun with it. I never even bothered with a PS5 and I'll probably never own one. The console may as well not exist.
Bluepoint being forced to make a GoW live service stings the most for me. A lot of people thought for a long time that they would be working on another remaster/remake like Demon's Souls. Potentially even a Bloodborne remaster given that it's 10th anniversary is in a few months and Sony's seeming reluctance to give the game a PS5 upgrade of any kind. But no, just more talent wasted on live service slop
I mean we already knew this. For like a while. Several years ago they said they were focusing on live service stuff and now they’re facing the consequences. This isn’t surprising at all
I would have though Sony would have at least had enough sense to not but thier best single-player studios on live service games, but apparently they're too stupid to do that.
It's weird because it felt like they already smelled blood in the water when they cancelled the live service last of us and spider man games. I guess concord really scared them.
Back in the PS3/Xbox 360 era many single player games also had a multiplayer portion built in. It was great and probably doubled the chances of a game to succeed. Like in the case of Lost Planet. The single player part did OK but it was the multiplayer that made it popular. Too bad that strategy seems all but forgotten today. Especially by Sony.
Just imagine 50 Kratoses walking around the same map at the same time, half of them are wearing Chinese NewYears skins. Just like the lore and the basic principles of story telling intended.
I hope Astro bot taught them something. Single player platforming games used to be bring in so many people for them. So many games that don’t require micro transactions were so popular because we just want to play them and enjoy them. That game won game of the year for a reason. They should have learned something from that. But, big executives, they only know how to chase money, and can’t see the bigger picture most of the time.
And Astrobot is certainly no better than Kirby and the Forgotten Land. And that got more realistic scores around 85/100. Astrobot doesn't even have a face. Those mascots usually don't go very far. Who still cars about Wall-e
@@BleakVision Wall-E only got one movie and maybe some shorts stuff. It’s hard to compare, because you don’t need a bunch of story every time to keep capitalizing off Astrobot.

Hey yall voting with our wallets worked in Concord's case. Wouldn't it be crazy if we just like.... ignored the other four projects when they release too?

The big corporation discontent is funny. You lefties think you’re so cool with the worldly, anti-capitalist attitude, but you miss the bigger picture all the time
in 10 months they may have done this noticeably, but they’ve been liquidating their IP and quality in their gaming sector since the ps3 lmao. as a giant corporation with gaming just being a part of it, they’re unable to make long-sighted decisions about quality and legacy, so they just are forced to maximize shareholder value as much as possible in the short term lmao

@@MisterZebra42There was some other game company whose tagline was "For the plsyers", but their name escape me right now. They would be doing pretty well roght now
I think the core of Nintendo's ideology has saved it from becoming foolish. They don't see themselves as a video game company, they see themselves as a toy company. What do you do with toys? You play with them. They've always kept play as the heart of the company, and that's why they last so well.
Nintendo isn't necessarily a fantastic company, but it's amazing how they manage to stay on top by doing the bare minimum of not fucking up their games and keeping politics and bad industry practices out of them. If Mario Kart was owned by Sony or Microsoft, you'd have fucking $20 battle passes to unlock kart parts and ridiculous looking outfits for the characters. If only they would chill the fuck out about emulation and actually release old games.
Neither Nintendo nor Sony/Xbox consider the other their competition, since they've basically chasing after completely different markets and consumers since the Wii.
9:45 Another negative aspect of cancellations -- morale. Like it or not, employees/artists/etc are gonna feel a major drop in morale when you tell them that all of their work has been scrapped and they essentially wasted their time.

you put 12 into production, already full well knowing most will be cancelled, because youre only looking for one or two to hit. sony already knew they were gonna cancel many of these live service games when they announced them. they just didnt know which
I like the comparison of 12 all you can eat buffets because it allows you to pick your flavor of buffet/live service game. You have your more generic shooter live action game that's like your bog standard buffet. You have your (cancelled) spider-man live service which is like a pizza buffet (spider-man is in new York and new York is big for pizza). You have your Indian buffet which would be your... I dunno which game to equate an Indian buffet to
No no, heres the mind blowing part: Bluepoint Games were clearly utterly brilliant technical artists and game designers and used that tech experience to do the best remakes the world has seen, and SONY HAS THE GALL TO HAVE THEM MAKE A LIVE SERVICE CASH GRAB? Fans have been speculating for years that Bluepoint's big unannounced game was a remake of Bloodborne, so much excitement building, and then they nonchalantly reveal that Bluepoint was working on a LIVE SERVICE MULTIPLAYER GOW? Whoever greenlit this must commit seppuku
Dude, Xbox f'd up so hard, but Sony is just as stupid this generation, like what the hell? I'm so glad I mostly only care for Nintendo these days, because my goodness, what a circus this is with Sony and Microsoft.
Xbox has been doing great. Nintendo and Xbox have double digit profit margins and are successful in their markets. Playstation has been in single profit margins for awhile and underperformed on almost every big release.
@@Kudos2_MeXbox has not been “doing great”. They shut down so many studios, they are laying people off in the thousands, and gamepass prices keep going up. Game pass became profitable LAST YEAR after they raised the price. It was nothing but losses before then. Non of their games are doing exceptionally well in the sales department due to gamepass. Indiana jones was a good game but I didn’t buy it. I played it on gamepass.
@Kudos2_Me No, Xbox has not been doing great. They're in distant third in terms of consoles sold, with gamepass conditioning the people who are on Xbox to not buy games, and their use of contractor's destroying their ability to make games.
The core casualty is what wasn't made instead. Just like with Blizzard's infamous Titan project which had years upon years of their best developers time only to be canceled, these massive make all the money games have consumed studios and crippled up to a decade of potential. Just so Sony could chase the money that they statistically would never make because these games are so all consuming of people's time. It was a pipe dream from the start and it took them concord to realize things were doomed.
And also the reason why the ps5 has so few games now. Like seriously a lot of those studios could have been making single player games that could have boosted the console.
Yeah. You could feel it. I just assumed they were putting too much into each game, because cutting edge graphics and that ballooning problem. Instead they had their best devs trying to engineer a golden goose. And none of them worked out.
@@gobbagoo That comes down to the nuances of design. Overwatch was born from the ideas of Titan. We don't know how much of that actual assets, coding, and so on participated in Overwatch. Titan leapt into large scale development before it had a sound idea of what it would be. And from what I hear about it they never nailed that down, leading to the cancellation. In the mean time devs were making assets, remaking assets, and just generally spinning wheels. Everything that lead to overwatch could have been riddled out by the per-development team that conceptualize the game. Without all of the untold amount of labor lost to the wind. Or maybe without that tremendous waste things wouldn't have ever congealed into overwatch. We'll probably never know. I know which direction I lean in. Most games that spin wheels blind for years end up going to crap. With a success like overwatch in hand I can understand being weary of axing titan, but its an outlier. What we can't have in hand are all of the games that might have been made if Blizzard didn't immediately race to try and make the next wow sized game and just took is steady. And blizzard did cancel a lot to focus on wow, a lot that might have been continued post wotlk or something in place of a big project like Titan. To sum up, artists will make stuff if they have the opportunity. Venting all of that opportunity into an uncertain project waiting for a miracle is wasteful.
I know we already knew this, I know this goes without saying, but my goodness. This really does show how completely these executives are out of touch. “Live service = money, so more live service = MORE money!” It is baffling how little they understand. They don’t even have the smallest iota of a conception of how fatigued people are of live service, and, as Arlo points out, there’s only so much time in the day, we literally only have so much time we can spend on even one, and they expect people to do twelve??? It really is sad the work that these devs are being forced to make only to be scrapped because it was an inherently flawed premise from the start.
A little while ago I got into three different idle games. Not even live multiplayer games, just free idle games. In like a week I got tired of them and only check on one fairly regularly now (it’s more of an mmorpg than a clicker anyways so there’s actual stuff to do) I can’t imagine trying to balance three shooter or other multiplayer games. It must be exhausting checking them all out for daily rewards and challenges or trying to collect the coolest skins, let alone just wanting to play them all for fun gameplay
God, im a huge playstation fan and this just pisses me off. Theyre literally known for their single player games. Astro bot, spider man and god of war are all considered peak by most people. I blame that idiotic former CEO for telling the company "we need more live service games" before he retired.
I'm just glad the Shadow of the Colossus guys are back at work making another banger single-player game. I would almost buy a Playstation just for that game.
This is like seeing how much money Saudi Arabia makes on oil, then sending a dozen teams out into the Sahara without a map and telling them to start drilling.
Sony really pulling the 'Just one more lane' for live service games. "JUST ONE MORE, ONE MORE LIVE SERVICE GAME, I SWEAR WE'LL WIN THE NEXT GAME AWARDS, PLEASE!"
I can only assume the angle they wanted to take was "if we make a bunch of them, we can cater to everyone on our platform!" After all, a fan of shooters wouldn't be all that interested in a fantasy RPG. Either that or they would all function on a "play to complete your dailys" system so you play about 30-45 minutes of each game to tick off the list. Man I hate how many games have just become a job in that regard.
Sony being so horrifically dumb thinking we wanted live service games for GOD OF WAR??? SPIDERMAN??? HORIZON?? It's almost like single player games aren't meant to be played constantly every single day for the rest of your life and that doing that would trivialize the gameplay loop, ruining your future with that game. That's why hero shooters were so successful. Cause the gameplay was built for that format. Sonys leadership is genuinely dumb. Or they're not dumb, they just don't actually care about the products because their entire goal is to make infinite money.
Uhhh about the spider man one We aren’t sure if that one was even live service just multiplayer And when the leaks came out months ago Plenty of people said they 100% would have liked that. Including me it was based off Spiderverse too. That sounds sick. I’m not really a fan of the other titles so I don’t know if there was any way to make those work but a Spiderverse game from insomniac would 100% have sold like gamgbusters
@RaiginAnimator Theres no way it WOULDNT have been live service. I love Spiderverse stuff, but its clear Sony was desperate to try and capitalize on the movies so they just added it on their ridiculous Live service slate. Id rather Insomniac focus on Spider-Man 3 and Wolverine. Multiplayer games are all just live service now. You dont make a multiplayer game at this point without it being live service.
Live service Spider-Man isn’t the worst idea (a Spider-Verse story is a great setup for that), but how many superhero live services have ever succeeded? Throughout … all of time? I can’t even name one.
@@thatdanjamesguy.330A fundamental problem is that superhero games are chiefly sold on power fantasy, and it's hard to sell that when everyone else is just as powerful as you. It's the line from The Incredibles: When everyone's super, no one will be.

@@FrostclawTheGatomon They really should. The work culture there having its own problems not withstanding, the overall Japanese culture encourages respectful communication. So developers and fans can come to a general consensus on how to improve a franchise. Since it fits as an example, what’s a shame about the end of arcade culture in the US is that in Japan it’s actually a benefit to test games before they’re ported over to console or PC. They get that right as a foundation first, and then they focus on marketing and retailers on a larger scale. Unfortunately in the west it’s all about chasing after investor funds first, and doing anything to bend over backwards to receive that money before the end of each quarterly cycle.

They are often arrogant, believing themselves to be visionaries, ignoring the advice of specialized people, and giving orders of nonsensical things, in order to achieve the next big thing.
To be fair not all of them are like, but the ones that are definetly stick out and sadly it's more than a few. Sony's execs definetly fit the mold even before this whole live service craze.

They might be in a WORSE position than they were with the PS3. At least halfway through that generation the PS3 had games worth playing, but almost 5 years into the PS5 and there's next to NOTHING.
PS3 had a slow start but after like 2 years it started getting momentum releasing bangers after bangers and went on to become one of the best consoles ever by the end. Live Service work by a version of "Highlander Rules". Basically, their can ONLY be 5 or 6! Overwatch is currently dying and being replaced by Marvel Rivals. PUBG was replaced by Fortnite. What was Sony going to do with 12?!?!?! Replace the entire Live-Service industry?
Honestly I think that was their plan. Try to grab the market in its entirety for their platform and essentially monopolise it in a way. But concord was such a historical failure that it genuinely terrified them. If that happened to 12 more of their projects, I think that would destroy Sony and they would have to drop out the videogame market.
@@Arcsin27 it likely won't get shut down (at least not soon) but the player counts are dropping significantly. If Rivals is able to keep the crowd and Overwatch is still unable to do anything to bring the masses back, it won't look good for them.

I have never regretted buying a system more than my ps5, I have only played maybe 3 actual ps5 games and it mostly plays ps4 game in my house. Why would people get a ps6 if the ps5 library was such a disappointment.
Sony's situation makes it harder and harder to see the Horizon, Helldivers, and Until Dawn movies as less of an expansion and more of a desperate move. Not to mention Sony Pictures isn't doing as well either.
A Helldivers movie would be awesome if it wasn't for the fact that it would probably be a sloppily made cash grab to capitalize on the game's popularity rather than something made for the love of the source material and the fans like the Sonic movies or the Mario movie.
ok, I can see Until Dawn as a Slasher Horror movie, a la Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th, but Helldivers? That's damn close to making a parody of a parody, i just can't find interest in that.
As someone who has less than 0% interest in live service games, I'm not sad to see these games go. However, I wish they'd have canceled them sooner so the developers could move onto new projects quicker. I feel bad for all those developers who put years of work into a game that will never see the light of day. All of that work was wasted because of Sony.
The console industry will either go back to one time purchase full games or die. The people prone to gambling and addiction are already captured by mobile, MMOs and loop shooters on PC.
As a former destiny addict, and hearthstone player, it’s strange to see both the live service games I followed for 10 years both crash and burn in the same year. I think unless you have a major revamp it’s natural that players will get bored over time. Destiny also had a major onboarding issue, it was the hardest game to recommend to your friends. I think Bungie will be folded into Sony as a support studio and I’ll be sad when it happens but yeah I don’t see Marathon catching on like they hope.
The new StarCraft miniset is awesome though! It's the most fun I've had in Hearthstone all year. Otherwise yeah, the meta has been especially stale recently. Looking forward to the rotation
It's undeniably idiotic how Sony just keeps pushing for games people do not care to play, they keep wasting money to produce the games, they fail and then they lay off a lot of people. I get it, full price games are not as easy to get behind since inflation is wild and salaries do not match, less and less people can just spend their extra money on games, but this is not a solution, make smaller games that can have seasonal events or expansions, not bigger games meant to milk players out of their every cent.
Expansions were a good system. I remember paying close to full price for Command and Conquer and Age of Empires expansions. They could reuse the engines and keep the money flowing while the sequel was being developed. Then you could release a full version including all expansions and a lot of people would go for them. Sometimes I think they should go back to D-list actors in front of green screens and FMVs, seems like those were faster and cheaper to make than all the Motion and face capture nonsense🤣🤣😂
I am biased as I'm a switch gamer - but Nintendo is the only company making exciting decisions imo. Focus on lower cost games with fun gameplay - and build from there. It seems so simple lol
You'd think so, but Playstation and Xbox have focused so hard on selling themselves on photorealistic graphics that they've forgotten how to do anything else. And wow, what do you know... only having like two games because they take an age to develop, with mediocre gameplay, and graphics that are technically impressive but not appealing to the eye, isn't a recipe for success. And let's not forget how stupidly expensive developing these types of games is.
If only they didn't act more like a Lawfirm than a game developer, cause that Palworld Patent Lawsuit has really soured me on them, otherwise you're right.
Nintendo has always made long-term decisions. A lot of moves seem nonsensical, and a lot of moves seem prescient... but they're perfectly consistent, believe it or not. Their decisions are equally as stupid and equally as good, just everything is taken on a significantly longer time scale with the primary focus being market sustainability- They're currently on the open-world game trend with all first party titles... about a decade after it stopped being the major "trend". They might make bad decisions on games or bad decisions on trends or anything else, but that's disguised by the time frame. The fundamental difference is that they always move to preserve their market. They make sure that they have players for their games, and games for their players. Never _once_ have they fucked up that calculus, unlike Sony who didn't understand that there aren't enough players in the world to support the games they were making. With that framework in mind, their litigiousness makes sense. _All_ their decisions make sense. Hell, the palworld thing is so consistent with that core decision-making framework that it's hard to argue that it's out of pocket; it's exactly what they've always done, even if it's frustrating or unfair.
@@sylvrwolfloley dont forget nintendo were the first one to push touch screens and analog sticks people thought they were stupid back in the ds and n64 days but look at where we are now

Live service is the literal worst thing that ever happened to video games. I refuse to support any of them, ever. I want to pay for a game once and that's it.
Exactly. At this point, I hate micro transactions and live service more than I could ever be excited about a game. For me, it’s an instant disqualification and my life is better for it.
Modern Sony is so utterly disconnected from reality that it's appalling. The COO saying that they "don't have enough first party IPs" and continuing to rerelease their newest franchises should be enough of a sign that they're just plain stupid
Relentless greed does weird things to people, including blinding them to problems that are evident (there are only so much money and players to sustain a limited number of live-service games) for everyone else, EXCEPT the buffoons taking the those terrible decisions.
There is greedy and then there is stupid and not really knowing what you are doing. Shareholders don’t pay massive salaries for supposedly professional experts to make expedient decisions. Very embarrassing, reality I think is that these companies are too big.
There's throwing everything at the wall to see what sticks, and then there's throwing twelve slight variations of the same thing at a wall made of teflon
I think anyone would rather a pikmin doing a silly little dance in the bottom corner of the screen at all times than whatever the hell is going on with the average Sony game.
Sony could not have given their studios any oversight at all, or put a self-absorbed "what I like will the most money" guy in charge, and either would have been hugely more successful than this live service push. Playstation really made the worst descions possible.
They ruin their whole generation trying to do somethif no one wanted to to play and no dev wanted to develop (except for Helldivers 2, which isn't really one of their games)
I play Fortnite and Marvel Rivals, and keeping up with just those two is already too much. Sony literally doesnt understand that people have schedules with limited time each day.

There are only ever like 10 live service games able to support themselves at any given time and 4 of those will always be League of Legends, Fortnite, Rocket League, and Genshin Impact
This is the first time in my adult life that I don’t have a current gen PlayStation or Xbox. I have owned the PS5 and XSX but I realized that both companies are flopping in their own ways. PS5 doesn’t have any games, and Xbox is going third party and removing any reason to own their console. I sold them both and built a PC. I have access to both of their libraries, no PS Plus fee and my graphics are better. I play with an Xbox controller instead of mouse and keyboard. I will not go back to anything other than a switch 2
@@Matanumi And Nintendo with a better-than-PS4 level system that comes with a mouse included is going to start eating and chipping away at PC too. Because when you get right down to it, a keyboard sucks for gaming compared to a joystick+buttons on your left hand. WASD is terrible compared to a real analog stick.

What PS3 era creativity? Three uncharteds and the most overrated game of all time? More ratchet and clank? Killing all their old fun franchises from the PS1 and PS2 and becoming soulless and bland?

@@THEONETRUEOVERLORD perhaps, but PlayStation is Sony’s main moneymaker. They still NEED PlayStation to succeed. If PlayStation fails, Sony is in trouble.
@@dpackerman4203This. Xbox can cease to exist because Microsoft doesn’t need Xbox, but PlayStation’s current gaming cancellations/lack of games that are making money is gonna tank Sony as a company
This isn't the Sony any of us do deserve. This isn't the Sony who made the PS1 or 2, or 3 with its weirdest, or the super successful PS4. The PS4 was successful because of the range of games, not because it was a good console. The ps5 is laughably mediocre in comparison to the PS4. On the other hand, WB hasn't learnt. So at least don't have course corrected.
Playstation has ALWAYS just copied Nintendo and jumped on whatever happen to be trendy at the time. Except now with dev costs so high, missing just one trend without a breakout hit means their whole system crumbles. They never sold enough PS5s to justify the budgets for PS5 level gaming. So all those games had to move to PC just to make their money back. And it's the classic Nintendo failure cycle we remember from the 2000s: Exclusives don't entice people to buy the console, install base then doesn't justify exclusives, which means fewer people buy the console, etc.
It's been a quiet generation because of their insane push for live-service. Where are the exclusives? Not here because they SPRINTED for live-service instead of thinking carefully beforehand if that was a good idea. At least I'm looking forward for console exclusives like Ghost of Yotei, Wolverine, Intergalactic, Santa Monica's game, Media Molecule's game... even if most of these are releasing WAY later. But we could of had so much by now if they didn't focus on their live-service plan (but that's just speculation.)
Now would be a great time for Sony to start telling their studios to work on smaller scoped and budgeted titles to actually get games out before the next console.
That's the hope hell I'd even encourage developers to rework assets from these live service games into normal single player games before they destroy any of them,
The weirdest generation, not because the consoles were bad, had weird gimmicks, or even were too expensive (though that's debatable), but because these companies bought so many developers and yet have nothing to show for it but their incompetence as game studios. We drag Nintendo for dragging out the Switch's lifespan, but it seems that might have been the play if it means we get ACTUAL games on and throughout the next console's release.
Um I definetly did'nt drag them I thought them not rushing to the next console was the smartest thing they've done. They let the Switch play out while taking their time to make sure they get the next one right and because of that their now in a very good position that the other two are'nt because they made the stupid decision to release their new systems during a global pandemic and it's still biting them in the ass.
it is so frustrating that we could have had another great remaster/remake from Bluepoint or even a new IP from them and they were slaving away at the live service mine all this time. Same with bend Studio too. They cold have greenlit Days Gone 2 and tried to grow that IP. Instead, we now probably have to wait until either the tail end of ps5 or the start of ps6 for their games to show up
@@Burden_one I have not yet played the game but from what i remember, Days Gone initially was not as good it was after it got ported to PC and got loads of updates. A lot of people probably played the launch version and found it only OK.
I don’t think that Sony realized how high risk live service games are to develop. They just saw companies making a lot of money from them and didn’t realize how much of a risk of failure there is.
I don't think there's enough gamer free time in the world to support 12 more live service games. Games like this take up so much time that you generally can't sell more than one to the same person, so there is a very limited amount of these games that can be successful.
Off-topic: The gameplay footage used in the first half makes me remember how much I hate free to play shooter games like Destiny, Warframe, and the First Descendant. They all feel so fake to play, and the effects feel so gross because it’s like they’re trying to jingle keys in front of you with pretty bullets.
It’s just the sheer amount of time they feel like you have to have. It’s not possible to play that many live service games and you know well some people will switch and pivot to a new one. They enjoy better than the past one. There’s only so many people who play video games who are even into life service games in the first place. And the more that come out the more you’re just eating each other’s lunch one by one by one until you spread out the live service players so much that you don’t have enough of an audience to keep almost any of these games afloat. And 12 is astronomically an insane number of live service games for one company to have being made All at the same time that is just absolutely crazy to me.
Jim Ryan and Herman Hulst are as bad as Don Matrick and Phil Spencer have been. We're about to see Nintendo dog walk their competitors by doing nothing
@ It is definetly refreshing to see Nintendo so ontop right now after decades of being pushed down by Sony and Microsoft as well as from "hardcore" fans. And I hope they deliver the shake up that the game industry needs right now.
@@Cloud-dt6xb Just having a portable system, that also plugs into a TV, that is more powerful than a PS4, and includes built-in mouse support, with Call of Duty, and cheaper than $500.... They basically can't possibly lose now.

I spent the first half of the video trying to figure out what the game in the footage was. I have no idea. Nothing about it was distinctive enough to suggest what game it might be.

"Nintendo Switch has games"
Suddenly I'm realizing why this is a selling point.
>Buy company

Why aren't there any profits?
Btw, this wasn't JUST "12 Live Service games" that Sony wanted to make. This was "12 Live service games" that Sony also wanted to RELEASE BY 2026.

It's almost like corporations are just bad for creativity in general unless they have strong reasons not to just chase money.

@glennhkboy Uhhh no it's got literally nothing to do with women and minorities in gaming. It's got to do with big corporations latching on to trends due to a few high profile outliers.
Nintendo won the console war by not participating and doing their own thing. Luigi really wins by doing nothing.
They say they aren't a game company, their a toy company. By keeping their focus on the joy of play, they're winning.
Microsoft is playing the long game.

The Xi Jinping maneuver
After all these years Nintendo actually won the console wars, and they essentially did it with Xbox 360 level hardware. Absolute legends.
The console war ended the moment Sony and Microsoft published at least one game on the Switch.

@@Kudos2_Me Microsoft also has other divisions that are turning a profit. Everything at Sony sans the Playstation are losing money.
Sony would be cooked if it weren't for MS somehow doing an even worse job.
Giving people the option of 12 live services is like giving them the option of 12 similar subscription services or 12 all you can eat buffets
Idk if titans the right comparison since it eventually became overwatch which started as a massive success for like 2 years
@@gobbagoo
That comes down to the nuances of design.
It's insane to me that all these companies went crazy with live service titles and drew no connections to the MMO market.

-Phrases always said before disaster.
Who are all these companies? It’s only Sony 😂
Funny part is that half of them are shooter so basically they have at least 6 fishing rod chasing after one fish.
A little while ago I got into three different idle games. Not even live multiplayer games, just free idle games. In like a week I got tired of them and only check on one fairly regularly now (it’s more of an mmorpg than a clicker anyways so there’s actual stuff to do)
I can’t imagine trying to balance three shooter or other multiplayer games. It must be exhausting checking them all out for daily rewards and challenges or trying to collect the coolest skins, let alone just wanting to play them all for fun gameplay
Not to mention how expensive it would be to play that many if they all have DLCs like Destiny, season passes, or both

"JUST ONE MORE, ONE MORE LIVE SERVICE GAME, I SWEAR WE'LL WIN THE NEXT GAME AWARDS, PLEASE!"
Sony is trying to "Nah, I'd win" their way into that Fortnite money.
"twelve different live service games" ...Do they just think I have 12x the amount of free time or something? What even?????
Uhhh about the spider man one
We aren’t sure if that one was even live service just multiplayer

PS3 had a slow start but after like 2 years it started getting momentum releasing bangers after bangers and went on to become one of the best consoles ever by the end.

I have never regretted buying a system more than my ps5, I have only played maybe 3 actual ps5 games and it mostly plays ps4 game in my house. Why would people get a ps6 if the ps5 library was such a disappointment.
I think I've played my PS3 more than the PS5 in the last 8 months. Sony gotta do something quick or else they're ending up like Sega.

Arlo title situation is INSANE 🤯
As someone who has less than 0% interest in live service games, I'm not sad to see these games go. However, I wish they'd have canceled them sooner so the developers could move onto new projects quicker. I feel bad for all those developers who put years of work into a game that will never see the light of day. All of that work was wasted because of Sony.
The console industry will either go back to one time purchase full games or die. The people prone to gambling and addiction are already captured by mobile, MMOs and loop shooters on PC.
Part of why Nintendo is winning is because their game budgets aren’t astronomical
As a big PlayStation fan, let me say that this generation has been very disappointing and this news is just more salt to the wounds

@ 100% agree.
Their decisions are equally as stupid and equally as good, just everything is taken on a significantly longer time scale with the primary focus being market sustainability-
They're currently on the open-world game trend with all first party titles... about a decade after it stopped being the major "trend".

The PS3 and PS4 were the beginning of this, what are you talking about? This sony didn’t appear out of thin air.
The PS3 foretold this
Playstation has ALWAYS just copied Nintendo and jumped on whatever happen to be trendy at the time.
So I guess the world will never be ready for Live Service Ice Climbers
It's too late for this gen. Even AA Nintendo- scoped games take 3-5 years now.

Across the board, this console generation has been an abject failure in terms of games. The only saving grace for me has been Nintendo.
Great games are obviously there, they’re just third party.
it is so frustrating that we could have had another great remaster/remake from Bluepoint or even a new IP from them and they were slaving away at the live service mine all this time. Same with bend Studio too. They cold have greenlit Days Gone 2 and tried to grow that IP. Instead, we now probably have to wait until either the tail end of ps5 or the start of ps6 for their games to show up
It's a shame because everyone I know who gave Days Gone a chance loved it. I have no idea why it got such mid reviews, it was a great first entry.

I don’t think that Sony realized how high risk live service games are to develop. They just saw companies making a lot of money from them and didn’t realize how much of a risk of failure there is.
Every PS generation has had it's own charm... until now. The PS5 is just a soulless desert of nothing.
Oh they've been doing that for 4 years now just with the orignal switch. So if both of them keep this up Nintendo's going to utterly humiliate them.
@Cloud-dt6xb For sure, but its going to be a whole new level with a system that should be able to play all but the most demanding of AAA titles
@ Not only that their priorites are where they need to be putting all their effort into making good fun games that people can get invested in. I can't wait to see how their developers take advantage of their new power especially monolithsoft
I spent the first half of the video trying to figure out what the game in the footage was. I have no idea. Nothing about it was distinctive enough to suggest what game it might be.
Destiny 2, the footage is linked in the description
