though in regards to toddlers I agree they don't seem to understand conversations, yet, obviously, they do eventually, but not in the first 1 to 2 years

My pet peeve (among the thousands) is people who don't train their dogs, and when said sh*t machines come pelting up to me, start pretending their dog has any respect or interest in the owner, by yelling the dog's name over and over, again pretending to be sorry that their little treasure won't behave...You have failed to make the dog understand you are its master, because you view them as a toy and not a responsibility...That makes you an as*hole. P.S. Greg's amazing and has entertained me for about 15 years.
Funny thing is I do that to my cat. I know she probably doesn't understand me but it's make belief half the time i think. Although sometimes she responds as if she has understood what i said. I dont think she had but i would think so if I didnt know any better.
A few times she's eaten a whole bowl of food and then goes onto eat our other cats portion until I call her out on it and firmly say no not loudly but in a normal volume. Cos otherwise she'd eat all the food and my other older cat would have nothing to eat. She doesn't ignore me and continue. She looks up at me and sees my stern face and then leaves to go outside in a strop. XD it's actually quite funny.
Of course don’t believe a THING GREG Davies is say8ng!!! He’s a gud comedian, but NO wonder he hasn’t got children or partner????? Wise up Greg!! A sentient being is anything which has feelings - we all know dogs and cats have ‘feelings’. An animal ‘suffers’ from not being able to ‘express itself’, but they DO understand more than OUR suppressed instincts!
Especially the looks on our faces, as you will always see them looking at our facial expressions so BE LOVING!! Cats especially know their names (as in the musical ...) and dogs are at LEAST as intelligent as a five year old - would anyone abuse a five year old child?? I love Greg’s jokes, but he should promote KINDNESS to the vulnerable in society 🙃😕

My mum talks to our cat like that! And that's even more hopeless because even if they did understand, cat's are such pricks they'd probably do the opposite of what you were asking!
i wouldn't say that about them, they're just stubborn, got minds of their own. dogs aren't any stupider or smarter than cats, they're just more willing to do stuff cause they like being active

@Mike Lloyd Couldn't agree more. All the bashing of her, the Kardashians, Stacey Solomon etc to me just seems like thinly veiled misogyny. Like you say, they're clearly intelligent people to be able to make such a fortune with no real talent. Boggles my mind how people fail to understand that.
I barely know who that is, only thanks to Q.I. I'm aware of her existence, but I'm still certain that if you talk to her, she knows what you're saying, dogs don't, or at the very least it can't always exactly be proven they can
with kids it makes sense, even if they dont understand everything, they learn the language faster, if you dont dumb everything down to baby talk.

Owners who treat their dogs as humans really annoy me. The reason is because this is often times to the detriment to human relationships. These owners can be completely out of touch with reality.
Love Greg but disagree about the dogs - anyone with more than one dog knows they do have a concept of ownership when it comes to their toys etc.
Or their food. I have a friend who has an Akita which is a Japanese breed of dog as well as two cats, and when feeding the Akita she'd have to make sure the cats weren't in the same room because she knew if they attempted to eat from his bowl it would rip them apart. Dogs have a concept of ownership, and if they didn't they wouldn't obey their masters when they give them instructions.
I'd say pet owners who refer to themselves as mum and dad and their pets as children is the most cringe, sad thing I've ever heard

No, Greg was spot on (I know quite a bit about dogs).
Dogs aren't intelligent enough to understand when someone is having a full one sided conversation with them though. He is right. As for toddlers I sort of get what you mean but the same concept still applies.
A dog will react to body language and tone. Also a child learns from being talked to but it probably won't understand the words you are saying for a while let alone abstract concepts such as sexuality or economics.
On balance I would say my dog does not understand the concept of Economics making you right....
There are dogs with an understanding of 1000 or more words. My border collie knows what 'grass' is, what 'toy' is, knows the difference between that and 'squeaky toy' - trust me, they're pretty smart!
And he puts his toys away, too. Most kids don't!

I'll agree dogs can be smart, and can understand some things, I'm just not sure they understand as much as people might think, and it takes months if not years of training, i believe. have they tried the mirror experiment on them? i know they've done it on elephants and dolphins and they both seem intelligent and possibly sentient

There is no debate over whether dogs are sentient. And sentience and self awareness are two very different things. It is also clear that concepts like ownership are not exclusively human (though clearly the more complex legal forms of ownership are).

I loved Greg til now......😭 - a sentient being is one who has feelings - and dogs not only have feelings, they r the essence of love. Further, they not only have a vocabulary of 20 words or more, they actually don’t need u to speak if u r thinking straight into their eyes - Shame Greg, Shame!!
