We use to grow Charleston gray and Congo a while back. Now we plant Jubilee. Our favorite is a seedless watermelon that we pick up at the grocery store. We have gotten picky in our old age. LOL

I am in 9A. I direct sowed two Sugerbaby watermelons around March 1st. They are now about 6" high and on their 3rd set of leaves. Looking very green and healthy. No insect pressure either.

Hurricane Ian planted some watermelon seeds in one of my raised beds. I planted pumpkins that did terrible in that bed last year. The rouge watermelons started taking off in January. I harvested a huge one about a week too early. The others are almost ready to harvest. One is even growing on the walkway pavers! I only hose watered them daily - no fertilizer. Nature is so unpredictable! Old goat in the vegetables behind Sheila.

Watermelon was a crop I was initially intimidated growing because I blew all my flowers off with too much nitrogen the first year. Trial and error, now I know better. Thanks for the educational bits about timing the nutrients. My favorite watermelon is baby doll yellow. Also I see old goat behind the garlic and peppers!
I have never had any luck growing watermelon, so I don't really have a favorite. Seedless is on the top of my list, as far as ones that I have gotten from the store.
I plant only from seed based on soil temp 75 deg. So I plant late and they surpass seedlings started in a greenhouse. The melons can never get exposed to cold soil, this permanently stunts growth. Full sun, six feet apart. It may be overkill ,but i make sure that I cut the vine past the watermelon. One melon per vine. If I find two babies, I cut off the smaller one. I get 30lb crimson reds even though the seed packet says up to 20 lb. I use irrigation until the last month, then I cut the irrigation. Lots of foliar fertilization.
Washington state is a great watermelon crimson sweet. It grows better here. Also the black . I wanted to try the Congo this year but the seeds were all sold out at my hardware store. Another one I wanted to try was the giant jubilee. But sold out. Crimson sweet is our most popular. And that’s my favorite here . Thank you so much fer the information you guys are wonderful. Blacktail Mountain watermelon. I haven't been any good at growing watermelon in the past. I'm pretty sure I just didn't realize how much fertilizer they needed so after watching your how-to video I'm going to give this smaller sized melon a try. Thanks so much!
