    I grew potatoes last year for the first time. I used the Ruth Stout method, growing in the straw. It’s the lazy gardener’s way of growing potatoes and when you harvest them, they come out clean because they grow mostly on top of the soil. I’m looking forward to trying it again this year. I’m an urban homesteader so I try all kinds of growing methods.

      I didnt even get that far lol. My first two attempts were just at making my own slips... no luck... so this year I figured I'd buy them instead.

      @@halfbubbleoffplumb8480 Sweet potatoes grow from slips. They are in the morning glory family. Irish potatoes grow from an actual potato (or piece of a potato, depending on size), not slips.

    • @halfbubbleoffplumb8480
      @halfbubbleoffplumb8480 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DC-rd6oq thanks. I tried both each time. Sweet potatoes tried rooting in a glass held up with tooth picks, and also half deep in moist soil in a pot, no luck getting slips. Tried white potatoes 2x. Cut, planted eyes up in soil, few green leaves came up, flowers on one, let the top wilt n die off no potatoes. Next time cut, let scab over planted in ground nothing sprouted at all. This time, ordered red seed potatoes. They say 3rd times the charm!

    The garden photos from Tom today were so inspiring and lovely. Well done!
    I'm still dithering over which potatoes I want to grow here in north Texas. I've been making grow pouches of my empty 50-pound feed sacks for years now. Always have good luck with potatoes in those. I'm leaning towards the Red Norland and either Yukon gold or German Butterball. I've never grown the Butterballs but I keep hearing rave reviews about their tastiness. Probably going to add some Kennebec too, since we do love our fried potatoes. Guess I better hurry up and make up my mind before all the seed potatoes are gone!

    Last year was my first time growing potatoes. I used welded wire fencing to make hoops that were 18" high and 24" diameter. I lined them with weed block fabric. I used a compost blend for soil. I grew red potatoes and had a great harvest. I liked the method because I can stack the hoops for indeterminate potatoes. To harvest, I pull the wire and push the soil over.

    I planted the purple potatoes in 5 gallon buckets and we happy with my small harvest. It was my first time growing potatoes. They are beautiful. I also bought a bunch of russets from our local garden center. My question is what is the best way to store them? I put some in gunny sacks and hung them in my dark cool basement and wrapped some individually in newspaper in a cardboard box. They're all sprouting eyes like crazy. The garden center said some ppl can keep them almost until their nest harvest. That's not happening with mine lol. Any help would be appreciated. Thank u

    That's my garden in the photos. Eastaboga is pronounced East ah Bow gah. It's an old Indian name, Muscogee I believe, for "where the people reside". We're not far from Mt. Cheaha and Talladega Speedway. Those carrots are "container carrots" and I don't think I'll ever go back in ground! I can control that soil consistency, keep it nice and fluffy, and let those carrots grow big and straight. That's green beans in the pic with all of the mulch. That's a 5 panel long "bean tunnel" that the pole beans eventually cover. Nothing like picking beans standing straight up in the shade! I finally saw that dang Goat! Had to get the right camera angle......I believe Karrie must be responsible for hiding him! ;)

    I always plant Kennebec and Red Pontiac potatoes but am thinking about some Yukon Golds as well this year. Last year my Red Pontiac plants all of the sudden turned yellow and they started losing their leaves. I had 2 California Wonder peppers by them that did the same. When I say all of the sudden I mean within 2 days. I pulled the taters out and left the peppers, which eventually came out of it. Stunted but they lived. Not sure what happened. I bought some 15 gallon root pouches this year and will try potatoes in them as well. The old goat is hiding behind the lovely Mrs. Sheila behind the hearts. God Bless Yall

    I'm curious when you're likely to have peanuts back in stock.
    On the topic of the video, I have been planting potatoes a couple of weeks before average last frost and usually get a disappointing harvest. I'm considering planting earlier this year using row covers to protect the plants as much I can so they don't have to mature in the heat. Spring is really short here. Curiously the planting date on your chart for my location appears to be 4-6 weeks before the average last frost date, so I suppose my new planting plans are more compatible with your recommendation. I still expect with that schedule that the plants are almost certain to get some frost damage and perhaps even freeze to the ground a time or two.

    Hey, Greg question on using drip tape with taters obviously I can’t stop the rain but I don’t like to put any water overhead on plants. Now our usual drip tape, is it best to use zip tape on taters and if so, would it be best to lay the drip tape on top of the ground instead of below, where the tubers are and then, of course, after the first side dress, you would cover the dirt to heal the potatoes in cover the drip tape

    Oh! I saw old goat hiding well! Behind Mama Hoss peeking out from the bigger heart 😁 I need to do better with my potatoes. I end up with lots of small ones, and they are all sending sprouts. They are Yukon Gold.

    For so long I did not think that the old goat had a heart. Now I see him hiding behind two of them? Will be planting our potatoes in raised beds about the 15th of March. We are in Zone 7, New Mexico style!

    I have grown potatoes for years. Mostly Red Norland and Yukon Gold. A few German Butterballs. And have been successful with them. Here’s a question, I have tried to grow Russets several times, and they just don’t make. They only produce a bunch of tiny little ones about the size of marbles. I have tried different fertilizers, leaving them in longer, more compost and mulch. Nothing seems to make any difference. Any ideas about why this is? I would appreciate any information you would be willing to share. Thank you!! I am in Hillsborough North Carolina, zone 7.

      We have never grew that variety. Make sure they are getting plenty of water, fertilizer, and sun.
