    Marvel really complicated Cyke's optic blasts as the years go by. When he was first introduced, Scott's body absorbs solar energy to convert it to optic blasts, he was even able to absorb lightning to do the same. There was even a panel when the beam was able to hold three robbers and made them unable to move as if they were petrified. If Cyke's power came from another dimension, how come there were so many times that he rans out of optic blast?

    • @ahlpym
      @ahlpym 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cyclops' body generates a field that neutralizes his own beam. That's why he can block it with his hands and his eyelids. The energy of his brother Havoc's powers (and presumably Vulcan's powers) is similar enough that the field also neutralizes those attacks. I'm pretty sure the same applies for Cyclops attacking them.

    It's pretty simple, his power is the ability to open those portals to the punch dimension. The "solar" portion is not what generates the "punch," but what controls the *aperture* of that portal. By default, only a certain amount of energy flows through the portals, but if he strains himself he can widen that aperture, producing more powerful beams. If he does this too much though, it drains his solar energy reserves. It's basically like trying to hold a valve open that wants to close.

    • @jasonleejames_official
      @jasonleejames_official 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Tim Ogul it's still confusing because he also needs the glasses to keep them closed. When he's not wearing them they fire non- stop. The aperture is always open but it doing so tires him out because it wants to close?

    • @timogul
      @timogul 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Well, it doesn't tire him out physically, it just tires out his "super power reserves," And yes, it's a strain on his systems while active, but he doesn't have the _option_ of just turning it off. This is because he had brain damage as a child that broke the part of his brain meant to control his abilities, leaving them "always on". Think of it like someone with uncontrollable muscle spasms. It's painful, and it puts strain on their muscles that they would be better off not having, but they lack the ability to "just stop doing it."

    • @ahlpym
      @ahlpym 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      The visor doesn't close the apertures. It just harmlessly absorbs the beam (or redirects it back into Cyclops, who then absorbs it harmlessly), using the same energy field that allows Cyclops' own body to safely block the beam. That field is why he can block the beam with his hands and even his eyelids. The same field also harmlessly absorb the beams of his brother Havok, which is how their sibling immunity works..

    • @ahlpym

      Some of that probably comes from the fact that he can adjust the beam strength with his visor

    • @Kingmegadon
      @Kingmegadon 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Alex Larson That's part of it. The other part is considering how big the portals in his eyes really are. Because after AvX the power of the former Phoenix 5 powers were enhanced along with their physical fortitude. For Cyclops it expanded the portals in his eyes, which would've happen normally if continued to train and develop them. So now Cyclops could channel so much power that even his original visor could barely control it. It's also why that had to change his visor. It was now half visor/half reflector. That and he was infected mirco-sentinels so that made his powers even harder to control.

    • @ahlpym
      @ahlpym 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      +King Megadon
      Yeah, Cyclops has received several power-ups over the years, and it makes sense that different power levels could correspond to different portal sizes. Maybe he can even adjust the portal sizes by squinting. That would give him some limited control without any visor. That's just speculation, though.
      Side note: How did you manage to quote my name as "Alex Larson"? Autocorrect?

    • @russellharrell2747
      @russellharrell2747 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      The beams are blasting continuously at a set lower limit of power that is energetic enough to break bones. Cyclops can increase the force beyond this to an unknown upper limit, and he obviously uses his visor to control the beams to create an effective lower limit of force below the normally fixed level, including stopping the beams altogether. Cyclops has exhausted his ‘energy reserve’ of sunlight in the past when he was younger and before his power level was increased by Krakoa; the continuous blasting effect is not enough to deplete his reserves unless he is starved of all sunlight for a considerable Time or if he attempts to increase the beam’s output to his upper limit for an extended but unknown period of time.

  • @Natakupl
    @Natakupl 6 ปีที่แล้ว +45

    I don't get why punch dimension is silly? I thought it's kinda cool. Like just a dimension of red that pushes stuff away. Sounds easy to explain. And also it makes more sense for his eyes to be portals since he can close his eyes and close the portals. If it's just a constant stream it would blow through his eyelids.

    • @ahlpym
      @ahlpym 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Actually, closing his eyes doesn't close the portal. Instead, as a part of his mutation, his entire body is covered in a field that can harmlessly absorb the beam. That's why he can block it with his hands and even his eyelids. It's also how his visor works: Ruby quartz resonates with the field, giving it the same ability to block the beam.
      Finally, it's how his immunity to the powers of his brother Havok works. Their energy signatures (or something like that) are similar enough that the field can absorb Havok's beams as well. Havok has a similar field.

      Of course not, but you made it sound like the most implausible part of that story was that this other dimension didn't have any other stuff in it. I would think that eye-portals or the existence of "punch energy" were both much harder pills to swallow than the idea that some alternate dimension in a diverse multiverse is filled only with a certain type of energy.

It's would also make them somewhat similar to how Havok's powers work mechanically speaking. Personally, when I was a kid i always wanted to have his powers be similar to Blackbolt, in that the energies reinforced his body with increased strength and durability. It's would explain why he would get pushed back by his own blasts and why he survive battle trauma that most other people would have died from easily.

      My problem with the pushback question has always been that Scott's physical eyes aren't the thing doing the pushing. Sure the blast fires out of his eyes, but the portal thing already addresses that. The portals themselves are likely not a physical part of Scott's body and thus that would be the reason that he can both see and fire beams at the same time. So recoil wouldn't be going back into Scott's body but rather back into the portals that are already a fire hose of ceaseless kinetic force.

    Honestly, I like the Punch Dimension more than the solar power explanation. It gives Cyclops his own flavor beyond run-of-the-mill laser vision, and personally I feel it makes more sense. The idea that he can turn such a small about of sunlight into such powerful beams isn’t that realistic either.

    I like the punch dimension because it does explain how cyclops can generate so much power. I mean it's not like you can just shoot beams out of his eyes, he can't turn the power off and less he closes his eyes or wear special glasses. Plus I love in astonishing X-Men where he fills in entire panel red to take out some sentinels with his highest setting.

    I remember reading somewhere that Cyclops' "punch dimension" is actually the realm of Cyttorak. Though I've been unable to find a source on this, it does make sense. Cyttorak was basically this extradimensional god of massive power that would originally empower the Juggernaut, who was so overwhelmingly powerful that telepathic attacks are the only reliable way to beat him. Moreover, Doctor Strange occasionally invokes Cyttorak when casting the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak, wiry magical tethers that were basically unbreakable unless you had the power level of Worldbreaker Hulk or the Infinity Gauntlet. Powers we've seen in the MCU, and I'm amazed Marvel Studios didn't get sued by Fox over it.
    Honestly I think the whole idea of the Punch Dimension was to basically differentiate it from Cyclops having guns in his eyes. ...Even though guns kill through focused concussive force.

    Sorry my poor english (i'am brazilian):
    In my opinion, as a fan of the Cyclops ever since, I prefer the explanation that your body needs to absorb solar energy (to fuel) to keep the portals in your eyes (using the concept of compact internal dimension or pocket dimension) ) open, releasing the optical bursts. For those who have a problem in '' thinking about it '' (or do not know how to have fun with comic books), just accept the summary that Cyclops needs to metabolize solar energy to be able to fire its optic blasts.
    In fact, in the pseudo science of comic books, including Marvel, many mutants, with their "fantastic biology" (worthy of a bestiary of fantasy creatures from RPG worlds) play with parallel dimensions:
    - Gambit is all the time producing enough kinetic energy to overload objects and shake their molecules to the point of becoming unstable and explosive. But people who do not want to have to 'think hard' sum up their power in the following way: It can saturate an object of kinetic energy and turn it into an improvised grenade. But few wonder what the origin of this infinite kinetic energy is.
    - Night Crawler teleports from one place to another, through another dimension (Hell, Brimstone, Limbo, etc). This point of transition to every teleporter jump is mandatory, although it lasts a few thousandths of a second, to the point that Night Crawler does not remember to have gone through such a dimension. This explains how and why, when teleporting, Night Crawler leaves a trail of sulfur.
    - Maggik has a teleporting power with the same Night Crawler feature. So did Azazel, father of Night Crawler.
    - Havoc, brother of Cyclops, is a transition point between the multiverse: As shown in the comic book '' Mutant X '' and '' Exiles '', Alex Summer may, in a moment of stress, have his mind off of his own body and travel the multiverse. Only your mind can do this teleport and only to incarnate in a \ doppelganger counterpart in an alternate universe in which there is another Havoc \ Alex Summer.
    - Kitty Pryde also came to have part of his powers of intangibility explained as transferring his bodily particles to another dimension for an undetermined time. And in the most convenient way possible for her. That would explain why Kitty was '' intangible, '' but still able to speak, see, hear. survive and be seen.
    - Cloak & Dagger also have mutant powers that work through interaction with portals and compact dimensions (pocket dimensions).
    - Colossus, brother of Maggik, and another relative of Rasputin, has the ability to cause an explosion that allows to invoke an interchangeable metallic battle body (organic steel), coming from another parallel dimension. As your frail human body is sent to this parallel dimension, remaining protected from further damage. However, the mind is the same and both bodies (Piotr Rasputin's human body and Colossus battle body) share the same pains.
    But, many people think that Colossus is '' armored, '' as if '' his body was inside a flexible organic steel armor from nothing. '' This was somewhat reinforced by the misinterpretation in Colossus' adaptation of his version for the '' X-Men Animated Series' 'of the 1990s.
    And remembering: Interchangeable Battle Bodies is a very old concept, created with the character Shazam \ Captain Marvel! Many characters switch from human bodies to battle bodies after transformations rather than '' mutating '' as many people think. He-Man and Adam; She-ra and Adora; Mighty Young Samson (Hanna-Barbera); Shazam and Billy Batson; Black Adam; Thor and Donald Blake; Kamen Riders (only the top of the Toei TV series); Miracleman (Allan Moore explained this concept very well in this comic book); Darkhawk (Marvel); and many other characters are humans who use magic words, artifacts, magic, or have undergone cyborgs implants to invoke a special surrogate body that turns them into superheroes.
    Even Human Torch 2 (Fantastic Four) is a likely interchangeable battlefield user: It literally has a power to swap your human body for a plasma body! He does NOT breathe while in this form. The Human Torch is NOT '' just dressed in fire ''. He became a being of fire.
    And if we were to get out of the mutants and move on to other Marvel characters, we would have to talk about Hank Pym and the ant men: The Pym Particles comes from another universe or dimension, called the 'microverse'. To become diminutive, Ant-man sends particles of its own to this alternate dimension and compacts the empty space between its molecules. But to become giant, Hank Pym temporarily absorbs particles of this size to increase his body mass.
    Therefore, see NO reason to say that the powers of Cyclops are treated as weird or difficult to think about. ;)
    A big hug. It was a great video. ;)

    a lot of times is cos people who knows nothing about the comic books tend to be incapable of seeing how interesting and awesome his character truly is
    and the important icon that he will always be for the X-men
    there is a reason of why his father and son are badass
    Cyclops also has a lot of that in his blood

    The alternative dimension thing could work if done right. Say Havoc and Cyclops enter the punch dimension to find out how there powers. They discover it's actually called The Chaos realm or the Crimson Cosmos and it's inhabited by Cyttarok. Cyttarok is an interdimensional god who loves anarchy and he also empowered Jaugernaut .
    In the chaos realm the normal laws of physics and gravity don't apply. Cyclops and havoc can use solar radiation to open portals to the chaos realm and can harness the gravitational energy into kinetic concusssive blasts or waves. Harnessing the gravitational energy also gives them enhanced strength, speed, agility and stamina.
    In the Chaos realm Havoc and Cyclops become omega level mutants with the power to manipulate gravity, open portals in and out of the chaos realm and even fly.

    It was explored, a bit, in one of the earlier issues of the first X-Men: First Class run. Either #3 or #4, but through Doctor Strange, Scott and the X-Men learn more about how his powers work, which fits the explanation of "his eyes are portals to another dimension", and they even visit the dimension. I know those "First Class" runs are looked over, as they very much were aimed at all-ages, but there were some gems in them that made them worth reading that expanded on what we already know from those early days of the X-Men.

  • @bluewind7567

    The things that I propose is that Marvel should just say something like this that Cyclops can shoot his eye beams from multiple energy sources that he can also take the energy from the Sun take the energy from another dimension and take the energy from solar radiation which could clear up the fact that multiple times shown he was able to use his beams blow things up that wouldn't be natural or set things on fire and using the energy sources very for each beam if you were to use the energy from the other dimension it would just shoot concussive blasts list of pure energy for solar radiation it would allow him to shoot basically fire

    Why is The Punch Dimension an unacceptable explanation? We found out Nightcrawler teleports not from one point in space in this universe to another but some Brimstone dimension. So there's precedent. Perhaps most if not all mutants have some connection with one of many dimensions and that's one factor in how their powers manifest or generate energy. I'd be okay with that.

    Yeah a lot of questions, like for number one if Visa portals to a universe made of nothing but concussive force but the portals are only activated via solar energy, then each sun should be surrounded by nothing but thieves portals basically concussive blast. Secondly, she should have been instantly crushed to Oblivion the moment she went into that dimension since it is nothing but pure endless concussive Force, because by it being pure concussive force doesn't that mean it's basically a dimension you kind of can't move in because it's like being in a dimension made of nothing but concrete.
