Great little work! Cimarosa certainly had a talent for opera buffa! I remember reading the passage in Goethe's Italian Journey where he records the composer being carried through the streets on the shoulders of the population of Rome after a successful performance in the 1780s!

What a stunning interpretation by Novaro, Antonini and the sublime Il Giardino Armonico. I've listened to Il Maestro di Cappella on the Haydn 2032 CD for several years now and this is the first time I've seen a video of a live performance. It adds SO much to the performance seeing Novaro's interaction with the orchestra. Bravo! Bene! A wonderful revelation!

It is absolutely wrong that we hear so little of Cimarosa - and Paisiello, Soler and one or two others - when we get endless performances of Figaro for example to the point of saturation.
There is surely room for Il matrimonio segreto, or Nina, or Una cosa rara, which apart from anything else, would increase listeners’ appreciation of Mozart by creating a historical context, rather than the vacuum in which most people listen to his operas.
A thoroughly enjoyable performance of an interesting work, by a highly skilled writer of vocal music, and well worth a place in this series of recordings.

    • @elaineblackhurst1509

Thanks for reading my comment, but beware - there are two Spanish Solers.
      *Antonio Soler (1729-1783).*
Mainly known for his keyboard sonatas - and a Fandango - written in a similar style to Scarlatti.
      *Vincent Martin y Soler (1754-1806).*
Mainly known for his Italian operas which were performed in Vienna, Naples, London, St Petersburg, and elsewhere.
Whilst in Vienna from 1785, VM y Soler became very popular, and had a number of smash hits; Mozart quoted one of his popular tunes from his fine opera Una cosa rara in the banquet scene of Don Giovanni.
Both Solers are less well-known composers worth investigating.

      Sshooter444
Interesting idea, I think he probably would approve; even though Mozart had a very earthy, Austrian sense of humour - and this is a quintessential piece of Italian humour - I think he would ‘get’ it.
Mozart’s closest attempt to this is probably Der Schauspieldirektor (K485), presented at the Schonbrunn palace in Vienna 7 February 1786 as the German singspiel competition to Salieri’s Prima la musica, poi le parole representing Italian opera.
The two pieces were performed one after the other at either end of the orangery on the same evening.
Hardly surprisingly, this interesting encounter does not appear in Amadeus because the general consensus was that Salieri won and that obviously didn’t fit Peter Schaffer’s script.
Eine Musikalischer Spass (K522), normally translated as A Musical Joke, but perhaps better as Some Musical Fun, Mozart’s satire and parody of an incompetent composer, written in 1787 is another rather more gauche attempt at humour.
Both these works are a long way from the much more sophisticated Italian humour found in his great operas in that language.
Overall, I think you’re probably right, and notwithstanding the various calumnies spread by Amadeus, I think he would have approved of this Italian piece.
I think Mozart - and Haydn too where it is usually overstated - enjoyed humour, both bawdy and sophisticated, both Austrian and Italian.
Mozart would have recognised everything in this piece, and enjoyed it, and laughed along like everyone else.

(Cimarosa).
