I am a professional audio engineer in NYC. I have worked in and around the music industry my whole life. Guess what, I use plugins on my mix buss too! TONS of pro engineers do. I use my own form of top down mixing. I highly recommend everyone who is learning to try anything and everything you can think of! There are no rules in mixing. If it sounds good, it sounds good. :)
I honestly cannot thank you enough. I am not a professional by ANY means. However, the idea of running sounds through different consoles opened up a whole new world for me in terms of Bussing and Master Chain. I have never worked on real equipment and this may sound rudimentary but in short; thank you.
Keep in mind the the meters on the tape machine only tell half the story, the operating (flux) level will determine how hard the tape is being driven.. Another great one, Pete.. Thumbs up!
Noted! I will certainly do a video on my Drum Busses… However, my Drum Busses aren’t quite as set in stone as my 2Buss and change almost every mix. That being said, I can certainly show you what I do. I’m suuuper stoked to get back on the horse. I miss it. Drum Buss video for you in due time, my man! 🙌🏼)
@@MixBetterNowTV ohk I see noted, thanks my main man, it will be great to see how you approach your drum busses!! And looking forward to the your comeback on the channel and the new content!! 🙏🏼

Ive been watching your videos for a while and now I mix and master for local artist and im getting paid from what you taught me. Ill post a mix and master soon!
The volume difference between the submix buss on/off was too great to really tell what was happening. It may be good to put a simple transparent gain plugin at the end of the chain to match the volume level on vs. off. Temporarily, for the purposes of demo'ing the difference in sound.
I love this video man! Thank you so much. I just wish you had put a mixtool on there for like -5 dB to be able to A/B it without the loudness difference... I couldn't really compare them now. In any case, you got a new subscriber :D
Thom James Thanks bro! Yeah, always hard to level match exactly where it comes across in youtube after they compress it to death. Duly noted though, and Thx for the sub 🙌🏼🙌🏼😁
Mix down is done to make the song sound as good as possible. Mastering should not be used to fix anything that can be fixed in the mix. I agree with your philosophy Pete.
super cool video. So if I am understanding it correctly: you route all the tracks to the aux stereo mix bus (solo safe all tracks plus mix bus) and route that mix bus to the 1-2 channel master fader where you add no plug in processing correct? From what you have there no matter the output level do you bounce the song or do you open a stereo track and record the whole mix onto that track? (this is what people told me to do as final mix before bounce it for uploading) thanks in advance
Pete, awesome chain on the mix bus there. I'm going to try to copy a lot of that for my mixes and see what kind of results I can get. Quick question for you: I've heard you say in other videos that typically you like to do subtractive EQ before going into a compressor. That being the case, why did you choose to use the brainworx EQ that has the mid and side filtering after the compressor, instead of before? Isn't the filtering still considered subtractive EQ? Thanks!
Danny Mosco Hey Danny! Sorry for the delayed reply.. just saw this. I like to use subtractive EQ on the mixbus after my comp because I find the compressor to alter the tonality and frequency range (specifically on the 2bus). On other individual tracks it's not as apparent because it's usually only one instrument (or a group). More drastic on the mixbus. But it's just how I work. No right or wrong. I just find it to work for me. Plenty of people do it before the comp. I'm a pretty big fan of doing EQ and compression in stages on individual tracks and/or busses. A lot of the time I'll do a little subtractive EQ, then compress, then do a little additive EQ, then compress again. For me, the mix is a hundred little moves that add up to form one cohesive sound 😊 Hope that helps! 🤙
Love your videos! You said you use the Virtual Mix Buss on every channel? And at what point in the mix do you set this up? Last question :), why do you compress before subtractive EQ? Cheers!
Brandon Stoner Hey Brandon. I don't use the virtual mix buss on every channel. I use the virtual console collection. I have that all ready to go in my templates so it's pre set up for the mix. As for the EQ and comp: I EQ after compressing on the mix buss because compressing can change the frequency range of the audio. There's no rule to it. Either way is fine. I just like the results I get working this way on the 2buss 🤙😊
Wow I really do love that UA API-2500 sound - amazing the UAD plugin truly sounds so REAL; I definitely hear the chug and meat of the rhythm step forward in an organic way almost as if it really was being glued with Analog Compression on top (and without squashing the 1st hits or transients - even at a later attack time software sometimes still can cause those strange digital artifacts).. I own the Waves version and it's really pretty good and isn't that bad either for use, but really I was pretty impressed when you A-B'ed the bypassed API signal - I'm bumping the track through my own 2bus here, but still that drum hit and guitar and bass chug REALLY step forward really providing that sound ofa hit record.. Great work on the song & Video! Also, I'm sure you're aware of the Michael Brauer method of compression - why not setup several mixbus's that only select tracks get hit with since you're already separating your master fader track anyways? (I think M.B. typically uses 4 separate parallel compression bus tracks for lows, mids, high, and ambiance)..
Hey Pete! First of all: a HUGE thank you for your work and for ALL your videos! It helps me A LOT to understand how to properly mix music. You are also helping me to understand different concepts of mixing! Thank you for your time and energy you put in in these videos!! Now my question: That what you are doing on your Mixbuss is not mastering right? And another question: What about mixbuss-compression? Is it "okay" to compress the mix-session and compress in the mastering stage then again? Of course i would compress in both stages very lightly. I know - the only rule is, if it sounds good, it is good :D - but i dont want to mess up my dynamics, so thats why i ask for your opinion :)
Thanks, great videos. Subscribed. Are the metering inserts on the Mix Buss pre-fader so that it's metering what's going INTO the master channel strip versus out of it, or doesn't it make a difference?
Thanks for subscribing, E Tal! Glad you are enjoying the videos! The Mix Buss is a "master fader" in Pro Tools and all inserts on a master fader are POST FADER... So the more volume you push into the Mix Buss where the metering is, the louder the metering will read :-)

I will print my final mix to an audio track in the session (in the DAW) which absolutely goes through all of my Mix Bus effects. I work in a slightly different way to what some folks do. Some will use minimal processing on the 2Bus and then do a lot of the seasoning and sweeting during Mastering. Now, there’s no ‘Right way/wrong way’, but that sweetening happens sooner or later in the process. If you KNOW what you want and the sound you’re going for, you can (in my opinion) do it at various stages or whatever point feels good to you. Hope that helps! 👊🏼😛

Joel Waddell BUT, look at it this way: 1, API-2500 (in your rack) is around $2900 ish. Then all of the sudden it's not so bad 😉 The important stuff isn't so much what Plugins I'm exactly using so much as it's WHAT I'm doing in WHAT ORDER and WHY. So if you don't have a Pultec, use a comparable EQ in a similar fashion. Always the wizard, never the wand 🤙😉

Thats a waste of money the secrets out all this hardware sounds good cuz of curves and saturation and there are way more affordable even free plugs that do the same thing.
Black Friday the prices can be like 10%... idk about UAD... but other companies like waves have an API-2500 that will sell for like $29, e.g... I keep waiting every year for plugins to not drop in price like that anymore much like we saw boutique guitar pedals blow up in the previous several years before.. I'd say save up like 500 on black friday you can probably walk away with 10x the value if you're patient and go to all the dealers for pricing (waves, plugin boutique, plugin alliance, sound toys, softube, etc...)

I really like this guy!!, I like that he picked a LGBTQ song to demo for us, bravo my friend.
