Hello, I could recommend one more thing. Instead of compressing the orchestral Bus with the ext. Key (voice) and the SoftTube Tubetech, prefer the HOFA Dynamique EQ and compress the frequency you need to let the voice been in front . Then , the compression is not apply to the all signal but to the vocal frequency Range, which is better to keep low frequency and clarity if you need to compress strongly. (Sorry for english mistakes)
dude... astonished... never thought of using sidechain processing like this... powerful effect in this chorus with the vocal sidechaining! I'll try all of them! One more epic episode, David! Still amazes me how much i'm learning in your channel! Thanks, bro!
Another fantastic video David. Thanks. Please try to "level match" when using the compressor (the tube-tech was louder with the compressor engaged). It helps us to hear the effect more precisely.
Another variation on the "voice over music" compression technique, will be to route the music mix to its own return bus, and then, have the voice triggered compressor just trigger that bus,. Then, mix the vocal bus ( should include the vocal EFX) and the triggered music bus into the 2 mix bus,... In this way , the vocal will not work against itself......... Thanks for all you do, Mr. David....
Interesting technique. What's funny is that we often use the sidechain precisely because we don't want the bass to trigger the 2 bus compressor (multiband compression is often used in mastering for the same reason), yet here you are doing the exact opposite. Very interesting and thanks for sharing!
Fuckin sick dude, really like this, never thought this way about 2 bus compression, thanks, you've open my mind to experimenting more with compression on my own tracks!
You know that this can't be unseen right ? You can't take back the fact that you have shown us meer mortals a top secret pro trick like bass keyed 2 bus compression. THANK YOU !! You're awesome David.
***** Did some experiments and found that it changes dynamic relations between instruments in very interesting way, you can make song more "colorful" instead of being more flat like compressed radio mixes.
Damn man. Watcging your videos really opened my eyes. You really share great info on mixing. Most of the videos on youtube say something like "cut 4kHz on guitars to remove harshness" :D While you're showing us how 1 dB of gain reduction makes a huge difference to the sound if used correctly :D Yourt channel is probably the best and most honest on youtube as far as mixing goes.
hey! Thanks for the video! Wanna say that you are one of the few not typical in a good way tutorial makers on youtube! Your tips and tricks have made my day!
i was experimenting like this on a mix, but i send lots of elements to group and used as you did the group as the s/c trigger. I think a bit of k as well maybe snare ... wow please can you show more like this! How about multiband s/c on master. Thankyou for this video! Sounds great! As another person said it’s an epic difference. Maybe it should be set up at beginning and mix into it perhaps. Choices are sometimes just too many! I am definetely always gonna do this though! I recommend trying acustica-audio sand or pink for this
Awesome tip. I already have an idea for placing this first technique. Should work well with the MJUC as second compressor and a trumpet section sidechained :) Wow. The bass sidechained is a real game change.
Thank you so much. For an aspiring engineer and producer your channel and your wisdom are truly invaluable. Ill buy the shirt, like the page, and buy you a drink someday! keep it up!
Great video, awesome technique thanks so much. I think I inquired about this a while back. Nice to see the set up. I was applying it to a (Full Mix) track prior to the 2 buss.
i hate to admit this is groundbreaking info for me (yes.... another grey area sorted lol). i/we do very much appreciate the time you spend spreading the knowledge..
hi david ! well i had to leave a comment on this one this mixbuss tip is very interesting ! and also im curently working on that very same song hehe such a nice glue with the bass trigger ! bro thanks a lot
This Channel is blowing my mind with every Video i watch. Not exactly the same Genre im intending to mix, but still applyable nonetheless. These Vids are Great! Subscribed!
"it may be subtle"
EPIC DIFFERENCE
I’ve never met you, but you’re my mentor. You alone are responsible for so much of my growth as an engineer. Thank you, David 👊
🙏
I've never even think about this. Actually a difference isn't so subtle, it makes the whole song sounds brighter, more "commercial". Thanks !
Side chain the mixbus with the bass is an absolutely game changer on rock/modern metal tracks for me! Thank you so much 🤘
Holy jumping Cthulhu on a chop stick!!!
Best channel on mixing. Period!

You know every now and then I come back to these old videos, great stuff... thanks David
The difference is huge!! The little bit of dynamic movement gives it so much life!

Very good idea!
I watch your videos all the time, not because i dont know how to mix, but to help me get bettert..YOUR AMAZING!!
I am Amazed how powerful this technic is :D
It sounds so much better because it's louder. That's is a big part of it, though I do see the merit to the effect.
It does sound more Musical with this technique in fact, when you bypass the tube Tech the overall song sounds stiffer.
