500yd swim. You could do the math and figure out that 10 laps = 500yds, 1 lap = 50yds, 1 length = 25 yards. This is a 25 yard pool. One lap equals 50 yards. Some of you guys can’t do math worth a crap. This is the Severna Park community center pool where official swim meets are held.
Does the rest timer start when you're done with your swim or when the last candidate is done with theirs? Just wondering if the "winners" have longer to rest before push-ups. Thank you so much for the videos!
Thanks for all the great videos Stew. I’m taking the next year or so to train for AF SW and these are teaching me a lot. I notice that the swimmers use the same arm for top and bottom. Do they ever alternate or just stick to the same?
Thanks for your great videos I just got contracted for EOD was wanting to go SO but my eyesight wasn’t up to par hopefully after 3 years in EOD I can get PRK and get my CO to recommend me for SO
North.Creations hey that’s really good for first time my first time going idek how to do CSS and 14 min into it they told me to just get out cause everybody else was done lol then I did 30 pushups like 32 sit-ups 3 pull-ups and an 11:20 run now I am at a 10:50 swim 60 pushups sit ups 10 pull-ups and 9:27 run but before I ship out I really want to be in the 9 min range for the swim 80 pushups sit ups 15-20 pull-ups and like a 8:30 run cause if you can put all them numbers up the chances of you becoming a special operator goes way up plus in bootcamp you won’t be swimming all the time and working out all the time you will be learning how to be a sailor but best of luck to you man maybe I’ll see ya there
Nice. I definitely want to get under 10 minutes on my swim. I want my pushups and sit-ups to get to about 75. And 15 pull-ups. I’ve always been a runner, so once I’m in shape I’ll be able to get my mile and a half down to around 8:30
Been subscribed for a while but over these last two weeks I have been putting in a concerted effort to use the CSS at the outdoor pool where I am lifeguarding in the long breaks between swim programs. I had only toyed with the stroke up to this point, but I have found that I really feel like I am cruising while expending minimal effort vs. when I am trying to keep up with the swim club crowd doing front crawl. I know I won't be running anyone down doing the CSS, but it felt really good to learn and succeed performing a new motor skill. A question: Being a Canadian and dealing with meters, 500yds works out to just over 450m. So if I am in a pool that is 25m it would be 18 lengths as opposed to 20 lengths of a 25yd pool?
Good day, I am curious to know when at BUD/S conducting the swim tests, does a swimmer have to use fully the combat side stroke? Or can they utilize the breast or other strokes as long as they make the time?
How do you recommend progressing from being able to swim 100-150m CSS intervals to a longer distance? Should I lower my pace and swim further or keep increasing my interval distances bit by bit? My goal is to swim a sub-8 and right now I assume I could do about 12-13 minutes.
Do you know if my fractured ankle will prevent me from getting a seal contact I have retained hardware currently if I get it removed will I have a chance either way?
Yeah. I always liked side stroke. So when I had a spine surgery 10 years ago I taught myself CSS. Even as a lifelong swimmer who swam the 500 in high school, I tire swimming free but can swim CSS all day and then some. I'm neither fast nor efficient but get my 500s under 10min. If you just want to get from point a to b CSS is the way
I have been working on the CSS for about a week. I am new to swimming. Im swimming in uniform for the GAFB. I am only making it about 25m in a 50m pool in 30 seconds and Im out of breathe. I see yall try to go 1 yard a second. What time should I expect to be at per yard if I have my uniform on doing the CSS?
1 second = 1 yard ; 500 seconds = 500 yds ; 500yds/60sec = 8.33 minutes ; conclusion: if you already have the given information then you should be able to figure out the questions you are wondering.
Thomas West I have more than no room to talk about swimming technique or swimming gear, as I’m beginning, but why would you swim in a uniform if the PST doesn’t require you to? Unless of course you’re trying to over-achieve which isn’t bad but why would you train with a uniform if it’s not needed?
Thomas West I would estimate with drag underwater with a full uniform on id day you’d add on at least another 5 or so minutes. So 13.33 minute 500 yd css. But that’s if you have distinguished technique without getting tired. But these are just estimations so don’t take them seriously. Enjoy your swim!
Hey Josh, I was going for the German Armed Forces Proficiency Badge. Its a 100m swim in uniform in under 4 minutes. I used the CSS to complete the swim. I was able to complete it in 3 mins. Thanks Stew Smith. I earned the medal because of these videos.
i started swimming a month ago, what I did to get used to it was put both hand on top of the wall and kick my feet in a tight area right below the surface of the water. every three seconds raise your head for a breath. This will keep you floating. Do it for 10 minuets straight. Allow your heart rate to lower before swimming
@@ianfrizelle1109 I think I’m going to have to do this. I mean I’m trying to qualify for air rescue and my stamina doesn’t let me get the 500 in the time I’m finishing my 5th lap when everyone else is basically done with their 10 because I need to rest a little
that's what i was wondered, he only does 5-6 stokes but he can get across the pool, i'm still averaging 7-9 strokes, but i guess this video shows stroke count and speed can be independent of each other
Stew Smith I've got a question for you Sir. I was in the Army and I got pretty banged up, multiple knee surgeries (5), tore Up my right shoulder, fractured my neck and back in a track vehicle accident in California. Any way I'm trying to get back in some kinda shape, I've really let myself go and I know swimming is great and low impact. Is the CSS a good alternative to front crawl in order to help me get back in shape.
It is you goofball. I have a ton of videos and text at the description of the highlight video that this pool is 50 yards round-trip. That means one length is 25 yards. Or you could do the math and figure out hey they just swim the 500 it took him 10 laps to do it must be a 25 yard pool. And if you listen to the video I say this is a 25 yard pool.
Jake Hunter Sorry but I don't think any female will actually ever be on the teams in the near future. They could earn the contract but don't think they will make it thru. Plus it would ruin the chemistry on the guys. I wonder how stew stands on this

Stew thank you so much for all these very educative videos!
During PST, is the pool length also 25 yards?
These videos really help out!! Thank you sir!
Does the rest timer start when you're done with your swim or when the last candidate is done with theirs? Just wondering if the "winners" have longer to rest before push-ups. Thank you so much for the videos!
Rest timer starts at the end of the swim of the last swimmer.
Thanks for all the great videos Stew. I’m taking the next year or so to train for AF SW and these are teaching me a lot. I notice that the swimmers use the same arm for top and bottom. Do they ever alternate or just stick to the same?
Yes - you learn both sides. It may not matter much in a 500m swim but it will in a 4000m swim.
@@StewSmith182 copy that Sir, thanks for the quick reply! Looking forward to learning.

Jeremy Helms doing the same thing. Going diver for a few years, then switching to Air Rescue
North.Creations right on man you got contracted yet? If so when you ship out
I gotta take my pst on Wednesday. I’m doing about 12:21 swim, 52 pushups, 65 sit-ups, 10 pull-ups and a 10:00 run.

After you DEP in you take your first PST. Earn a contract then go to boot, prep, BUDS. You use side stroke/CSS.
What are the requirements for a 55 yr old sailor for swimming. Can you swim doing back strokes for any of the test ?
OMG are the pools ever going to reopen?
Well, I have some good news for you lol
is 8:30 to sub 8
achievable with no sports experience?
John Carter sure - might take longer.

Kickboard
I have a week to prepare. I swim about 12:25. Any way I could get it to low 11s?
How’d you do?
I’m curious as well
Do you know if my fractured ankle will prevent me from getting a seal contact I have retained hardware currently if I get it removed will I have a chance either way?
Michael Smith I do not know the details of that enlistment disqualification
If you do some research there are waivers for metal still being in the body.
Is swimming the combat swim method less taxing than regular freestyle?
Yes. CSS is a lot slower than the freestyle, but you can swim a lot longer.

You had better know it before BUDS. Though you will likely perfect these type of things at BUDS.

Are they all going for SO/SB contract?
Jack not yet. SO /EOD perhaps.
what was the average stroke count of the football player?
The football player did not do that well on this test, BUT has since figured out the stroke and is now on 5-6 strokes per 25yd length.
that's what i was wondered, he only does 5-6 stokes but he can get across the pool,
i'm still averaging 7-9 strokes, but i guess this video shows stroke count and speed can be independent of each other
Yes - we fixed it. He was over gliding and losing his momentum every stroke. Though he did it in relatively low stroke count it got to slow
Got it, either do
less strokes for more powerful kicks and pulls to keep momentum
or
more strokes for less powerful kicks and pulls to keep momentum

How big is the pool .. should be mentioned ..
not relevant when you are swimming a 500yd swim. You could do the math and figure out that 10 laps = 500yds, 1 lap = 50yds, 1 length = 25 yards

pretty sure BUDs is SEALs training. women aren’t allowed to be SEALs. this is for Navy Divers. the PST is the same though

Stew Smith I meant do you think females in general could be on the teams? Or do you think it will ruin the chemistry of the men
I do not know. I cannot predict if a man will make it through BUDS.
Well swimming has basically nothing to do with boats on heads. Land portage is probably what will keep any females from making it
