Namco really did a great job in taking the series into a bit of a different direction with this game in terms of the gameplay. Sure, the time limit can be a bit annoying at times, but it does make the game increasingly more challenging, unlike the first 2 games which were easy as hell! Not keeping it as a pure 2D side-scroller also made the gameplay more action-packed and exciting. The ability to mutate was also pure badass!
This game was uber crazy back in the back in the... : ) My top games back then were this one, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Haunting, Starring Polterguy, and just for the heck of it... ROYAL RUMBLE! Thanks for the memories.
Can't help but think we could see Rick kicking the snot out of Jason after all this crap he went through, now that's the way to use the hockey mask. *thumbs up*
Omg ive been looking for this game for so long. I remember playing this game when i was 4 years old! Been trying to find it and now theyre making a remake so thats how i found out. This game use to scare me so bad, i watched my older brothers play. Man, its so violent...why didnt my parents say anything??? Oh well, at least i turned out fine... i think lmao
1:13 I just noticed the first room is separated with a white line, which means you cannot re-enter the previous room once you pass it. I don't see why the game wouldn't allow you to go back to the first room. All the other stages let you go back to the first room but for whatever reason not this one.
Holy fuck, I played this as a child and it scared the shit out of me. I love this game, and I'm thinking of buying a Sega Genesis and play through this game once and for all.
I was convinced as a kid that body in the boss room was Jennifer. Reasons to support that theory? 1. First play through I let the timer run out cause I was busy exploring. So Jen was "destroyed". 2. The body on the floor has feminine looking slender legs. 3. There's a FACE laying on the FLOOR with dark hair similar to Jennifer's in the cut scenes. I lost the first time I tried to beat this boss because I was too busy going {:O
...not to mention the Evil One himself at the end of Level 5. That big ghost head popping out of his chest used to nail me all the time. o.O But Level 6's final battle with the Mask was cake...kind of a letdown after Rick and the Evil One just got done belting each other all over the place, wouldn't you say?
You know, the boss room actually makes more sense if you let time run out. That's what happened to me my first play through and turns out the monster is eating Jennifer... :(
iam looking forward to trying out the new version, but this version imo looks so much more appealing, cartooney and colourful, the new version on xbla looks like every other game
That being said, despite their "repetitiveness" the real draw often is the challenge itself. Before the advent of "achievements" us old gamers would make shit up like 'Okay beat it WITHOUT losing a life/taking a hit more than x number of times". Such games would seem impossible (Splatterhouse 3, most likely impossible) to actually accomplish but the allure of being able to do them is there. Will say though Bayonetta I feel truly finalizes what splatterhouse and other similar games have created
I use to defeat bosses in this game by using his special move while he's in a transformed state. Just in case some people don't know how to execute it, it's BACK, FORWARD, BACK + ATTACK BUTTON. Other than that, at least this game was not crappy unlike other game sequels.
I would too if they not only took over my damn mansion but kidnapped my wife and kid as well for whatever reason kept them alive with enough time for me to rescue them. Then again considering Rick's and Jennifer's history I'd say they're pretty used to the damned undead shenanigans by now...
the game is great my friend recently bought it if you ever played the turbo grafix version that one is definitely harder, but none the less still a great game way better if you get it for an actual console. roms and emulators take out the nostalgia in my opinion.
I officially suck at this game. I played it the first time today on easy and the timer keeps running out on the first stage. The damn boss just won't stay still!
I got this game on labtop its a pain in the neck to play and I'm lieing about having this game on my PC If u want to download this game on ur computer I could give you name of the website
Interestingly the modern equivalent to this style of gameplay (side scrolling beatem-up) arguably could be either DMC or Batman Arkham Asylum/City. Consider how many generic goons/demons you face throughout each respective game before reaching the boss/plot turning point? Aside from a few gameplay mechanics and gimmicks Splatterhouse 3 and the recent games are pretty darn similar in this regard.
@LeonLeMelancholic Is that even possible! I remember this game being like the hardest thing ever, time wise. I recently busted my sega back out, thinking, mwua ha ha, with my adult hand eye coordination and years of gaming under my belt now, ill kick this games ass no sweat! well guess what, it was still way too hard lol. funny how I am better at other game types than my favorite genre, side scrolling beat em ups.

its awesome the sound and the way rick hits his enemies. it shows how much violent he s being to save his family!
This is the best horror game.

This was my favorite game when I was little. Wish I went back to the past.
Damn, graphics are pretty awesome for the Genesis. Best part of the Splatterhouse :)
I had Splatterhouse 2 and 3 and I tell ya this is prolly the most graphic game I seen on a 16 bit system!!!
all things considered, i am glad my parents let me play this game at an extremely young age
wow..
i remember playing this game, bring back memories..
Omg ive been looking for this game for so long. I remember playing this game when i was 4 years old!

I don't know what you guys are talking about, this game STILL freaks me out !!!!! :D
i always loled the monster hand showing you the way
When I think "Splatterhouse", this is the version that comes to mind

I loved this game. You walked around like stone cold beating the fuck out of demons and when the song kicked in you could take on the devils army!
Holy fuck, I played this as a child and it scared the shit out of me. I love this game, and I'm thinking of buying a Sega Genesis and play through this game once and for all.
I agree with hippiexchild, combos against monsters faces equals superb mayhem.
God, those monsters look awesome.
Wow... that map sure doesn't get old fast :)
the memories.. :(
This game used to scare the hell out of me :D
but then again I was only 4..
nothing better than the old days!
This game freaked me out majorly when I was kid.
It's fun to watch these monsters get rick'rolled.
Music is so badass when you get into a fight.
Dude I Love This Game So Scary When I Was A Kid!
wow...I remember when I played this game back in 2001 it used to scare me...that creepy music...ahh the years...
@ 5:11
Jennifer begin to smell of rot... of the GRAVE!
Jennifer: *takes a sniff of her arms- does the metal gear exclamation*
nice game.
In childhood i liked to play in this game.
That mask is pretty informative for something from the netherworld.
Jennifer has become encased in a tomb. of course, it's bread rather than crystals this time, but...
Well, time for Splatterhouse 2 2, rick.
The opening is right, it is best not to wonder aimlessly.
I wander when this will show up on the Wii VC
That scared me so bad. I was kinda waiting for Mindless Beast Jen to show up as a boss though...
yeah me too when i was little i couldnt even hear the music without being scared lol
This would be a nice opening scene for the Splatterhouse movie. :P
Seeing this boss on the cover art of the game made me think he/it was some sort of large demon dog, and I always associated it as a demon dog.
holy crap i remember this being like the first game i ever played. i was like, 5.
I was convinced as a kid that body in the boss room was Jennifer. Reasons to support that theory?

I can't believe i played this when i was 8
it's so sick x_x
man that boss was awesome.
i used to play this game when i was 8 hahahaha. good times. i used to think i was a badass when i would turn into the big guy
There definitely should be a "Symphony-of-the-night"-like Splatterhouse game
this game is pretty damn cool. it'd be cool if they remade this too
hes got better moves this time. nice :P
this is a excellent game, really gore.
You know, the boss room actually makes more sense if you let time run out. That's what happened to me my first play through and turns out the monster is eating Jennifer... :(
You'd think after the last 2 games that Rick and Jennifer would stay away from Mansions
@DolphHauldhagen
how is it? Do you like it? I haven't played any of these games yet but I think i'm getting into this for the lore of it all.
iam looking forward to trying out the new version, but this version imo looks so much more appealing, cartooney and colourful, the new version on xbla looks like every other game

The power up is tight.
So we here from Jeffy's stream right ?
a combination of Doom and splatter house would have made an extremely awesome game
foward, back, foward (or back fowar back, I forget) and attack while in super form to do a super attack that OHKO's most enemies
HEY, I remember this game!!!!
this game scared the shit outa me when i was a kid.
I know, I've always thought I was Jason when I played this game as kid.. (Man what was I doing playing a game like this when I was 6?! 0_o?)
I use to defeat bosses in this game by using his special move while he's in a transformed state. Just in case some people don't know how to execute it, it's BACK, FORWARD, BACK + ATTACK BUTTON. Other than that, at least this game was not crappy unlike other game sequels.
Say, can someone post the death endings? Meaning the scenes that lead up to the one where you run out of time and you failed in saving the person?
@OeilDeSang Yeah, I know! He loves to circle you just out of reach.
I mean, where can I find the pic of Jennifer becoming a mindless monster?
I would too if they not only took over my damn mansion but kidnapped my wife and kid as well for whatever reason kept them alive with enough time for me to rescue them. Then again considering Rick's and Jennifer's history I'd say they're pretty used to the damned undead shenanigans by now...
this game use to scare the crap out of me when i was 8 or 7
the game is great my friend recently bought it if you ever played the turbo grafix version that one is definitely harder, but none the less still a great game way better if you get it for an actual console. roms and emulators take out the nostalgia in my opinion.
There is for Splatterhouse 2 but I am not sure if there is one for this game.
Buying the remake when it first comes out!!
I heard there bringing this game back on 360 and PS3 I hope they make this game right!!!
you're welcome. A lot of folks don't realize that either.
he must love whats her face to go through this crap a third time
@RJT0123456789 did u play Doom 95 ? and Doom 2 ... that gave me nightmares when I was 7 y.o
Y pensar qe este juego me trae tan lindos recuerdos de mi infancia :)
I officially suck at this game. I played it the first time today on easy and the timer keeps running out on the first stage. The damn boss just won't stay still!
1:50, Putting chuck norris to shame
At the intro it says "if you wonder aimlessly," when it should have said "if you wander aimlessly". LULZ.
I got this game on labtop its a pain in the neck to play and I'm lieing about having this game on my PC If u want to download this game on ur computer I could give you name of the website
can you make on when you can skip stage 2?
What's the fourth one? I forget, it's been a while...
Where did you see the fourth pic?
Interestingly the modern equivalent to this style of gameplay (side scrolling beatem-up) arguably could be either DMC or Batman Arkham Asylum/City. Consider how many generic goons/demons you face throughout each respective game before reaching the boss/plot turning point?
Aside from a few gameplay mechanics and gimmicks Splatterhouse 3 and the recent games are pretty darn similar in this regard.
@OeilDeSang I just hate how he runs around so damn much, and with the timer ticking down its not like it makes it anymore fun.
this this just go from Survival Horror to Final Fight?
how do you do spin kick
@Animestar55 me to! its like manhunt but with monsters!
where is the spinning kick?
this game scared the shit out of me when I was like 6 HAHAAH
Well of course she smells of rot, there are bodies everywhere. haha
ahh...yes it does..guess I just needed to hear it in the right context...
played it when was a little boy... it was so scary.
awesome graphics!!!futuristic better than CRYSIS2!!!
in that game i had fear of a vampire girl lol
@LeonLeMelancholic Is that even possible! I remember this game being like the hardest thing ever, time wise. I used to play this game
What if the game was hacked? Then the green stuff can be changed to red.
The green stuff is not the blood. Its some kind of infection.
5:53, What the hell was that? The bitch slap from hell? LULZ.
@AmricanGir It's not like Splatterhouse III is the only game in which that happens. ;)
LULZ! I never realized that. :)
Back then! Cowers in hiding? Come on foo.
It's ok, a lotta folks didn't realize that either. :0
